At6.15,lastSaturdayafternoon,July27, Rev.FatherDenisGrogan,C.Ss.R.,passed awayatSt.John'sHospital,Subiaco.Just afortnightbeforehehadbeenstruckdown withaheartattackwhileactingaschaplain attheHomeoftheGoodShepherd,Leederville.

Fortunately,MonsignorJ. Hennessy of Grafton, N.S.W.,wasathandatthe timeandadministeredthe LastSacraments.Doctor Wheelerwassummoned andorderedFatherGrogan immediatelytohospital.He wastakentoSt.John'sand committedtothecareof theSisters.

Hehadnosoonerrecoveredfromtheattack thanheexpressedhisde- siretoreturntothemonastery.Butatthebeginningoflastweekhegave uptalkingabouthisreturn, nodoubtrealisingthathis strengthwasfailing.

BeforeadensecongregationsixyoungWestAustraliansreceivedthesacramentof HolyOrderatthehandsoftheAuxiliaryBishop,theMostRev.J.J.Rafferty,atSt. Mary'sCathedralonSaturdaylast.ThoseordainedtothepriesthoodweretheRev.P. McCrann,theRev.J.Chauncy,theRev.P.Ahern,theRev.T.Tomich,theRev.W. FlanaganandtheRev.P.Hickey.TheRev.BryanMcBridewasordainedsub-deaconfor theAbbeyNulliusofNewNorcia.Thenewly-ordained

At5p.m.ontheSaturday,hesaidtotheSister: "Iamfacingaroughnight andIhopeIdietonight." HewishedtodieonSatur- day-OurLady'sdayand shegrantedtohimthislast wish.Alittleafter6p.m. hebegantogrowworse.He then thesaidtoSister:"Ring beMonastery.Theywill havingOurLady's Novenashortlyandask themtoprayforme."

Whenhehadsaidthis thechaplain,FatherMcGrath,cameintotheroom. AfewminutesafterFather gm-ethreeshortgasps- therewasnostruggle,his soulhadgonetoGod. FatherCrowe,rectorofthe monasteryhurriedlysummonedfromtheConfessional,arrivedintimeto joinintheconcluding prayers.

HewassenttothePhilip- pinesandlabouredthere withindefatigablezealfor 25years.Hewaslaterap-pointedrectorinDublin,Eire.Thenfrom1932-5, hewasrectorinPerthand itwasduringhistermof officethatthefinewallfacingAlfonso-streetwas built.

Laterhewasentrusted withtheresponsibleoffice ofMasterofNoviceswhich heheldforsixyears.For

FatherGroganwasa dynamiccharacter.Being endowedwithtremendous zealandenthusiasm,he simplyrevelledinwork. Afterhisrecentarrivalin theWesthemadeitquite clearthathedidnotwish tobeconsideredason"the retiredlist." Hehadamostkindly heartandwaseverready togiveassistancetoanywhoneededhishelp.Above all,hewasamandevoted toprayerandtotheRedemptoristrule.

Eveninhisoldagehe wouldnottakethesmallest exception.Inbrief,hewas atruesonofSt.Alphonsus, withhisburninglovefor God,hiszealforsoulsand unwaveringfidelitytohis priestlyduties.

Itwastruethatwewere livinginatechnological age,butweseemedtobe proceedingontheassumptionthatalloursecondary studentsweregoingtobe engineersorphysicists.

Anotherseriousobjection wasthatthetechnicalexpertswouldfinishtheir educationwithverylittle buttheirtechnicalknowledge.

Itwastruethatattempts werebeingmadeinsome schoolstoprovidelessonesidedcourses,butneither teachersnorparentshadraisedtheirvoicessufficientlyagainstthedictation ofuniversityscientists. Coursesweregearedtoo muchtouniversityrequirements.

Afactormilitatingagainst developmentofthepowerof judgmentwasthemass productionmethodsforced onschoolsbythegrowthof classesandtheshortageof teachers.

Thethirdessentialfora fulllife-asuitableoccupation-tendedtobeleft whollytotheparents,but itwasrightlyamatterfor consultationbetweenthe homeandtheschool.

Thefinalresponsibility restedwiththeparents,but theschoolshouldoffer guidance.

Lastly,thedevelopment ofactiveintellectuallife seemedtobereceivingmore encouragementthanformerly.

Thatwasawelcomesign, becausemodernlivingprovidedthemajorityofpeople withmoreleisuretime. Thathadtobeusedtothe bestadvantage.

Concludinghisaddress, Mr.Mahoneymadereferencetothedisturbingnumberofmatriculantswho failedtomakegoodthe promiseoftheirschooldays.

Itseemedtoomanyhad beenspoon-fedatschool insteadofbeingtaughtselfreliance.Arigidexternal disciplinecouldcoverupinternalweaknesses.

Consequentlymanystudentswhentossedoutinto theworldfloppedrather badly.Itcouldwellbe thatsomewhowenttothe universityhadactuallyreachedthelimitoftheir potentialwhentheypassedtheLeavingexamination.

In1858,OurLadyappearedtoBernadette SoubirousastheImmaculateCorception.Since thattime,LourdeshasbeenoneofthechiefpilgrimageplacesoftheChurch.Everyyear,more andmorepeoplecomefromallovertheworld.

Nextyearwillbethecentennialyearofthe sanctuary,andlocalauthoritiesarestrivingto accommodatethemanymillionsofpilgrimswho areexpectedtovisittheshrine.

Alocalcommittee,headedbythemayorof Lourdes,AntoineBeguere,hasbeensetup.By meansofcontributionsfromthepeopleof Lourdesandvariousothersources,manynecessaryimprovementshavebeenmade.

Roadsleadingintoandoutofthetownhave beenimproved,andstreetswithinthecity,some ofthemverynarrow,havebeenimproved.
