SteadyprogresswasmadeatRapidCreek.Father StreleinhisreporttotheGovernmentauthorities mentionsthattheaborigineshadassistedinclearing theland,intree-planting,fencinganddamconstruction(thecreekwasdammedbackforover300yards). Aschoolwasopenedforthechildrenbetween6and 10yearsandthegeneralhealthofthenativesimproved.However,asFatherStrelepointsout,their innateloveofawanderinglifewasprovinganobstacletodevelopment,
BytheRev.F.FLYNN,M.S.C.OnAugust24,1884,abouttwoyearsafterthe openingofthemission,thefirstsolemnbaptismswere performed,whenFatherStrelebaptisedfourteenof theschoolchildren.Priortothistheonlynativesto receivethesacramentswerethoseindangerofdeath.
AfewyearslaterFatherMcKillopsaysinhis report:"Itishardtostruggleagainsttheevilinfluence ofthewhiteman'spresence.Teachingaswemust therestraintsofChristianity,thefightisanuphillone againstlust,drinkandopium.Iseelittlehopeof successforourworkat'RapidCreek,unlesssome littlepressureisputonthenativesbythecivil authorities,andImeanparticularlymeasuresto securethepresenceofthechildrenatthemissionfor regularperiods.Ifthiscouldbedonetheloafing whichnowdisgracesthestreetsofPalmerstonwould, Ibelieve,ingreatmeasurebecurtailed."
So,afterthreeyears(in1885),inspiteofthegood workbeingdone,itwasthoughtdesirabletoestablish astationfurtherinlandmoreremovedfromcontact withotherraces.
Dr.Cockburn,theMinisterfortheNorthernTerritoryintheSouthAustralian placed 100,000acresatthemissionaries'disposalonthe south-westsideoftheDalyRiver.
In1886thefirstsiteforastationwasselectedat OldUniya,whichisonlyabouthalf-a-miledownthe riverandontheoppositebanktothepositionoccupied bySt.FrancisXavierMissiontoday.
Afewyearsafterthisstation-HolyRosaryStation --wasestablished,asecondsettlement-SacredHeart Station-wasopenedup(1889),onthesamegrantof land,butsome20milesawayfromtherivertothe southatHermitHillonthebanksoftheSerpentine Lagoon.Thenativenameforthislocalityis"Komorkye.'Itwashopedbypenetratingmoredeeply intotheinteriortomakeclosercontactwiththe natives.
Muchdevelopmentalworkwasdoneonboth stations,butthesoilatneitherplacewassuitablefor extensivecultivation.Asitetwelvemilesdownthe riverontheoppositeside,wherethesoilwasmore fertile,heldoutbetterhopesforamissionheadquarters.
In1891,whenthenumberofmissionarieshas increasedtofivepriestsandsevenbrothers,agrant of.landwasobtainedonthenorthbankoftheriver closetothespotknownastheCopperLanding.To thispointshipscameuptherivertoloadcopper fromtheMt.Haywoodmineaboutsevenmilesaway. Thisgrantincludedthefertilearea(knownasNew Uniya),thatwehavespokenabout,andthestation wasplacedunderthepatronageofSt.Joseph.As thisfoundationwentaheadbyleapsandbounds,the earliertwostationswerecloseddown.
Whilewewereonthesouthsideoftheriver,Father LearyandIvisitedboththeseabandonedcentres.Old UniyaissituatedonapropertynowownedbyMr. JoeParry.Herewefoundruinsofstonedwellings. Thoughmuchofthestone,JoeParrytoldus,was removedtoconstructthecausewayacrosstheriver atthespotknownas"TheCrossing."
WhenwearrivedatHermitHillbesideruinsof buildingsandstockyards,wesawevidenceofan extensivecanalsystemofirrigation,onceusedfor cultivationtoprovidefoodformissionariesandnatives alike.
Itisindeeddifficulttoimaginehowthemissionaries managedtoexistbeforetheywereabletogettheir gardensestablished,becauseincomparisonwith modern-daystandardstheGovernmentgrantwasvery
meagre.Wereadthattheusualannualsubsidywas fiftypoundsandtwentyblankets.
ItistrueFatherStrele,thefounderofthemission wentonabeggingtripofsomemonthstotheUnited Statesandthroughhisfatherland,Austria,totry andaugmentmissionfunds.This,however,provided onlypassingrelief.
SomemonthsagowhenvisitingSt.Aloysius,Sevenhill,IprayedatthetombofFatherStreleinavault beneaththechurch.HehadcometoSevenhillin 1867,wasnovicemasterin1868andsuperiorin1880, beforesailingforDarwinonSeptember3,1882.
AtthistimeBishopSalvadoofNewNorciawas stilltheBishopofthedioceseofVictoria-Palmerston, althoughhehadneverhadanopportunityofvisiting thelocalitysincehisappointmentonAugust15,1849. ItwasfromhimthatFatherStrelehadtorequest facultiesbeforesettingout.LateronBishopSalvado resignedfromthisSeeandFatherStrelewasap- pointedAdministratorApostoliconAugust1,1888. HereturnedtoSevenhillin1892anddiedtherein 1897.
Tocomebacktoourstoryofthemissionfounded atNewUniya-duringthenextfiveyearstheyearly reportsfurnishedbythemissiontell,ofsteadydevelopment.Inviewoftherecentexperimentsin ricegrowingintheNorthernTerritoryitisinteresting toreadthatthemission'sricecropsgrewwithincreasingabundance.Alsotobaccowassuccessfully grownandproducedanexcellentleaf.
In1897forexample,overhalfatonwasmanufactured-morethanenoughtocopewithalllocal needs.By1898thegoatherdhadincreasedto2,000 withanaverageoftenkillersperweek.Pigs,cattle andhorseswerealsoincreasing.Varietiesofproduce successfullygrownincludedmaize,yams,African corn, bananas,sweetpotatoes,citrousfruits,pawpaws, pineapples,coconutsandmangos.
Waterwasbroughtupfromtheriverforirrigation duringthedryseasonbyasteampump,whichfunctionedefficiently.Gangandcircularsawswerein operationandgavegoodservice.

AsmallcatechismandpartsoftheNewTestament wereprintedinthenativetongue.Themissionaries wereabletoprintthesebooksthemselvesastheyhad theirownprintingpressonthestation.
FatherConrathwritesinoneofhisreports:"We areonanislandasisusualduringtheheightofthe wetseasonandnearlyallthesurroundingcountryis underwater."
In1898,andmoreespeciallyin1899,thesizeof thisisland.wasrducedalmosttozeroastheencircling waterssteadilyrose.Atonestage,inMarch,1899, themissionarieswereforcedtoevacuatetheirliving quartersaltogetherandseekshelterinthegoatpens situatedonthehighestpointofthesettlement.
Thewaters,ofcourse,soonsubsidedandthemissionarieswastednotimeinmakinggoodthedamage.
Itwastowardstheendoftheyearthattheauthoritiesinthesouthreachedthedecisionthatthework wouldhavetobeinterruptedandthatthemissionaries wouldberequiredtolabourelsewhere.
Thuswastoendagrimbutexcitingchapterin historyofmissionaryworkamongthenativesofthe NorthernTerritory.
4 Mr.W.Byrne,theownerofTipperarycattle station,anadjoiningproperty,purchasedmostofthe stock(some200headofcattle,50horsesand2,000 goats)andmuchoftheequipmentandbuildings.A tinminecompany,however,boughtcertainbuildings andbeguntodismantle'themevenbeforethemissionariesleft.
By1902.allwasfinalisedandthelastofthemissionarypriestssailedfromDarwin.
FatherLearyandIvisitedUniyaonthe"Lower Daly"afterreturningfromHermitHillandcrossing backtothenorthsideoftheriver.Practicallythe onlyevidenceofSt.Joseph'smissionstationnoware sixmassivemangotrees,thathavebeenabletowithstandthealternateattacksoffloodsandbushfires.
Wealsosawtheremainsofextensiveleveebanks erectedtoholdinchecktheonwardrelentlessflow ofthefloodwaters.
Elderlynativestoldustheycouldrememberthe dayswhenthereweremanycoconutpalmsinthe area,butwecouldfindnotraceofthesenow.Onmy firstvisittothisspotduringthewar(about1943)I rememberpickingupapartbelongingtotheold missionprintingpress,onwhichmarksofidentificationwereclearlyvisible.

Oneafternoon,whenIcalledinto"HumptyDoe," themanagertoldmeofaveryolddeafnativenamed Charlie,whohadcometothehomesteadashorttime previouslyfromoneoftheremoteout-stations.He wassureIwouldbeinterestedtoseeCharlieforhe treasuredashismostpreciousandsacredpossession asetofoldandmuch-usedRosarybeads.
CharliewasoriginallyoftheMulloch-Mullochtribe fromtheDalyRiver,wherehelivedduringtheold missiondays.CharlielefttheDalymanyyearsago anditisfairlycertainbecauseoftheremotenessof hissubsequenthauntsthathehadnofurthercontact withanypriestormissionrepresentativeofanykind duringtheinterveningyears.
Intheblacks'camp,IfoundCharliesittingoutside hiswhurley.ItookmyRosarybeadsfrommypocket. ImmediatelyCharliedivedintothefoldsofhisloinclothandproducedhistreasuredsetofbeads.
AsIsuccessivelytouchedthedifferentbeads, Charliepromptlyrecitedtheappropriateprayers-the Creed,the"OurFather"andthe"HailMarys."We finishedtheRosary,thoughhisextremedeafnessmade thingsalittlecomplicatedattimes.

Sincetheabovelineswerewrittenrecordfloods haveagaininundatedthousandsofacresalongthe swollenDalyRiver.Muddyfloodwatersengulfedpart ofthemissionareaandsomebuildingsweresubmerged.However,becauseoftheirconstructionand location,littleindicationnowremainsofthemenacing floodwatersthatonceswirledaroundthesebuildings. Themostseriouslosswastheherdofgoats,thatwere sweptawayinthetorrent.
