J.R.J.,Gosford:IamnotaCatholic,buthavemet inmyreadingsomethingthatinterestsmevery much,namely,thattheMonksofPrinknash,inEng- land,wereestablishedasanAnglicanCommunityin 1896,butbecameCatholicsonCaldeyIslandin1913, andlaterwereaffiliatedwiththeBenedictineOrder. Couldyougivemesomefullerinformation,andtheir reasonsforthechange?
R.:Bookshavebeenwrittenonthissubject;but,althoughItried,Iwasunable toobtainoneforyouin Sydney.Icannotdomore herethangiveyouabrief outlineofthefacts.
AnAnglicannamedBenjaminCarlylegottheidea, about1893,ofestablishing aReligiousOrderinthe ChurchofEnglandbased upontheBenedictineRule. HevisitedvariousCatholicBenedictinemonasteries tostudytheirwayoflife, andin1896,withtheapprovalofArchbishopBenson,ofCanterbury,founded anAnglicanCommunity.
However, themembers followedCatholicBenedictinessoclosely, wearingthe samestyleofdress, and celebratingtheCommunion ServiceinLatinaswellas chantingtheDivineOffice inLatin, thatBishopGore, ofOxford, toldthemthe ChurchofEnglandcould notauthorisesuchpractices; andthatiftheywanted Anglicanrecognition, they mustgetbacktousingthe EnglishBookofCommon Prayer.
AbbotCarlyleexplained thepositiontothewhole Community, andsaideach individualmembermust voteeithertocontinuepre- sent Catholicpractices, joiningthe ChurchandseekingtheauthorisationofRome; ortocomplywithBishop Gore'sdemandsinorderto remainintheAnglican Church.
Outof33members,22decidedtobecomeCatholics; threeleftCaldeytojoin otherAnglicancommunities onless decidedRomanlines;eight togiveupmonastic lifealtogether, andremain Anglicanseitherasordinary clergymenoraslaymen.
The22continuedtheir communitylifeonCaldey IslandasCatholics, were laterrecognisedasaffiliated withtheBenedictineOrder, andeventuallymovedfrom CaldeyIslandtoPrinknash, Gloucestershire, wheretheir communitystillflourishes asaregularBenedictineestablshment.
Atthetimeofthechange,
in1913,LordHalifax,leaderoftheAnglo-Catholics, blamedBishopGore,ofOxford, fordrivingtheCaldey Communityoutofthe ChurchofEnglandbyhis over-exactingdemands;but itisverydifficulttoseehow elseBishopGorecouldhave actedunderthecircumstances.
TheCaldeyAnglican monksarguedthatthe ChurchofEnglandclaims tobeCatholic, thatthe BenedictineRuletheywere followinghadhadCatholic authorityforover1,000 years, andthattheywere entitledtofollowit.
ButBishopGorewould not, andcouldnotadmit thevalidityofsuchanargument.Fortheauthorityin religiousmattersacknowledgedinEnglandinprereformationCatholictimes wasnolongeradmittedby theAnglicanChurch, and hadnotatanytimebeen admittedsincetheElizabethanrepudiationofthe Papalsupremacyatthetime oftheProtestantreformation.
Q.:Havetherebeenany similarmovementstothat ofCaldeyinthepastfew decades?
R.:In1913,atthesame timeastheCaldeyMonks submittedtoRome,an AnglicanCommunityof30 BenedictineNuns,which hadbeenfoundedatMalting,inKent,alsojoined theCatholicChurchasa body.
Sincethen,twoAnglican religiouscommunitiesof meninEngland,andthree inAmerica,havejoinedthe CatholicChurch.
