Theoccasionwasthe celebrationofBritishCommonwealthYouthSutiday. SeventeenhundredCatholicyouthtook displayandgavepublicexpressiontotheiridealsof commoncitizenship.

HisExcellencytheGovernor,SirCharlesGairdner, readmessagestoandfrom HerMajestytheQueenand tookthesaluteduringthe marchpast.

Thethemeofthedaywas "ComingtotheCrossroads" andtheyoungpeople,as futurecitizens,wereurged tolearnfromthemistakes whichhadledtothefallof empiresinthepast,andto buildstronglyforthefuture sothatallmightlivein peaceandfreefromfear.

FromtheEsplanadethe Catholicyouthmarchedvia Barrack-streetandMurraystreettoSt.Mary'sCathedral.Heretheprayersof theYouthMovementswere recitedbyRev.J.Depiazzi (DiocesanDirector of CatholicAction)andanappropriatesermonwaspresentedbyRev.J.O'Brien.

FatherO'Briensaidthat theyoungpeoplehadbeen toldthattheyhadcometo thecrossroads.Alongwith allyoungAustraliansthey shouldacceptthechallenge andplaytheirpartascitizens.

Theyowedloyaltytothe Queenhesaid,becauseshe wastheultimatesubjectof temporalauthoritywhich camefromGod.Itwasthe dutyofallCatholicstobe patrioticcitizensoftheland whichsustainedthem.

Decadebydecadethe RosarywasofferedtoMary HelpofChristians,PatronessofAustralia,forvocationstothepriesthoodand religiouslifeamongstAustralianboysandgirls,for Australian missionaries working'inAsia,forthe conversionofAustralia,for allpriests,religiousand CatholicactionistsinAustraliaandfortheBishops oftheAustralianChurch.

About700peoplefrom parishesofthesouthern suburbstookpartinthe procession.TheRt.Rev. Mgr.E.SullivangaveBenedictionfromthealtar intheschoolgroundsand againattheHighAltar whentheprocessionreturnedtothechurch.

Atnotimeinhistory,assuredlyatnotimeinAustralianhistory,hastherebeenmoreurgentnecessity tolooktoMary,theHelpofChristians,astheinvinciblebulwarkagainsttherisinghordesof heathenism.Whateverpaganismaroseinthepeat duringtheChristianera,itwasatleastisolatedand knownforwhatitwas.Thenewpaganism,which inrealityisveryold,ismoresubtleandinvidious. Itisclothedtodayintheacademicrobesofscience, intheplausiblepleasofeconomicpolity,evenhasit beenincorporatedintheStatuteBooksofnations whichChristiansheretoforehavebeenrequiredto obeysincetemporalrulersderivetheirauthority fromGod.Soveiledisthepaganismoftoday,so transformedalmostintoanangeloflight,thatithas penetratedtoeverystratumofsociety,toalarge extentunnoticedandunidentifiedevenbyChristians.

Itisinthenatureoferrorandeviltoinhabit placeswherethereisdarkness,andtheretopropagateitself.Thepowerofevilisgreatlydiminished, ifnotdestroyed,bythesheddingoflightintodark abodes.Somuchistruealsoofthewidespread paganismoftoday.Wherevertherehasbeenignoranceorconfusionofthought,therehasevil flourished.Now,outsidetheChurch,themindsof menarewadingforthemostpartinamorassof uncertaintyanddoubt.Henceevilunderresonant euphemismshasimposeditselfsolargelyonthe worldwhichdoesnotcaretoknowtheideaas distinctfromitstitle.CatholicsmightrenderClod andhumanityagreatserviceweretheytoindicate thisprincipleofantithesisbywhichpaganismlabels anideabyatermdirectlycontrarytothenatureof thatidea.Hencetherootideabehindtheterm "birth-control"islessbirthandnocontrol:"sterilisationoftheunfit"amountsinpracticetomutilationofthepoor;"freelove"signifiesthetriumphof lustwhichofitsnatureisthemostdegradedbondage.

Withgoodreason,then,shallAustraliacallupon Mary,theHelpofChristians,nowasinthepast. ParticularlywillOurLadyextendtousherpatronageandprotectionasthebulkofmodernheresies aredirectedagainstthehome,themother,andthe child,whicharepreciselythosethingswhichthe MotherofGodsymbolisesintheirpurestessence. Unhappily,outsidetheChurch,manypersistin regardingtheseevils,thatattackthebasisofthe Christianfamily,merelyfromaneconomicorsocial view-point.Theyaresomuchmore.Ontheirdecisivedefeathangnotaloneeconomicorsocialissues, butChristianmoralityitself,andChristiancivilisation.TheCatholicChurchdidmanyatimesave Europefromlapsesfromfaithormoralsand,asat Lepanto,fromphysicaldestructionorslavery.She alone,bythefavourofMary,HelpofChristians,can bringtheworldsafelythroughtheterriblecrisisthat itfaces.

Thefinancingofbuildings wasnorealobstacle.Inthe ArchdioceseofMelbourne thesituationwasbeing tackled.Hereitcouldbe metbyfundingparochial loansoutonlongerterms ofrepaymentandinstitutingafundtowhichall Catholicwage-earnerscould beaskedtocontribute.

Regularcontributionson quiteamodestscalecould provideatotalannualsum forschoolbuildingsandextensionsofover£50,000. Whatparishestookoutof suchafundtheycouldreplaceoverperiodsofyears astheygrewinstrength. Thefundwouldthuseventuallybecomeself-supporting.

Thematterofteachers presentedagreaterdifficulty.Eithermorevocations toteachingorderswererequiredorsecularteachers mustbeprovided.Thecost ofthelatterwasgreatand mightonlybesupported withtheaidofFederalsubsidy.

Federalsubsidywasa rationalsolutiontothe problemwhichfacedFederalGovernmentofobtaininggreatlyincreasednumbersofscientificandprofessionalpersonnelfrom secondaryschoolstomeet thegrowingtechnicological demandsofthegrowing populationofAustralia.

Whentheystoppedthe Bishopandstatedtheirbusiness,hemadeadealwith them.If,throwingthenailintotheair,itfellbackto theground,hewouldgiveitbacktoRome.

Thebargainwasaccepted. Thenailwastossedinto theairandremainedsuspendedthere.OnhisreturntoMilan,St.Ambrose decreedthat,ingratitude forthisdivinefavour,the nailshouldremainperpet-uallysuspendedinair-in theceilingoftheMilan cathedral,whereitiskept tothisday.

Thistotalrepresentsan increaseof25percentover thenumberreceivingsuch instructionin1953.

Whenpublicschoolswere re-openedinthePhilippines afterliberationfromthe Japaneseoccupationatthe endofWorldWarII,the lawstatedthatreligiousinstructionshouldbemade availabletoallpublic schoolpupilswhoseparents desiredit.

Thislawwasnotalways implemented,however, sincelocalpublicschool authoritieswereoftenantagonistictowardthe Church.

In1953,threetopofficials intheFilipinoDepartment ofEducationwereinvestigatedforallegedobstructionofreligiousteachingin theschools.

Sincethattimethenumberofpublicschoolstudents inreligionclasseshasrisen from483,911to1,114,685, thegreatmajorityofwhotn areCatholics.

Amanofbrilliantandcreativemind,Father TenisonWoodswasnotonlyoneofAustralia'sgreat frontiermissionaries,butalsoadistinguishedexplorer andscientist,whopioneeredamongotherworksthe geologicalstudyofNorthernAustralia.Hewaspastor ofafar-flungSouthAustralianparish,centredat Penola,andhadbeenponderingtheproblemofChristianeducationforthechildrenofthebush,whenhe metMaryMcKillop.

HepersuadedhertostartaschoolatPenola,andin 1865,whentwenty-threeyearsofage,sheandher twoyoungersistersbeganteachingthebushchildren thereinanabandonedstable.Thefollowingyear, whenFatherWoodswasappointedDirectorofCatholicEducationinSouthAustralia,MaryandhercompanionsmovedtoAdelaide,and,underhisguidance, expandedtheworkwhichwastobecomeapermanentCatholiccontributiontothereligiousdevelopmentofthecolonies.

MostotherreligiousordersinAustraliaweretransplantedfromold-worldfoundationsbyimmigrant nuns.Theynaturallybroughtwiththemrulesand customs,whichweretraditionlilinEurope,especially theenclosureofnunsbehindconventwalls.But MaryMcKillopandherSisterschosetovisitthepoor intheirhomes;theywentoutintothestreetsand lanestogatherinthefallenandhomeless;theyset upschoolsinlittlebushsettlements,wheretherewas neitherchurchnorpriestnorconvent.
