Acting:Thethree "Angels"inthepiece, Messrs.JamesBailey, FrankBaden-Powelland MichaelCole,aretobe laudedfortherefreshing andentirelynaturalmannerinwhichtheyperformedbothasindividualsandasateam.

Thisisthemorecommendable,consideredin thelightoftheirfrequent varyingappearancesin rolesatthePlayhouse(they,together withRonGraham,formingthenucleusoftheprofessionalcompany)for theycouldwellhavebeen forgiveniftheyhadappearedtobethesameold actorsplayingdifferent roles.

This,toourmind,in thisinstancewasdefinitelynotso:tothecontrary,theymightwellhave beentheactual"convictangels"inperson.

BaileyEnjoyed

Itwas.asusual,atonic towatchJimmyBaileyat work.Wetoo,enjoyed andrelishedwithhimall thesubtletiesandhigh- lightsofhispart,which onceagainha.displayedforourenjoymentHis characterisationblended inharmonywithhisfel-low'angels,"andatthe sametimestayedmost distinctive.

FrankBaden-Powellas thesecond"angel,"was inmanywaysthereal staroftheshow.Wewere agreeablysurprisedto findhimplayingarole whichdidnotnecessitate hisblusteringaround stageinaraucous,gra- vellyvoice.Heutilised hischancestothefulladvantagebutplayeda nicely-tonedsecondfiddle toJimmyBailey.

Heistobecommended forthesincerityhe broughttohispart,andfortheadmirablerestraintheshowedinthe handlingofhischaracterisation.Histimingand deliveryofhisearsplit-tingwhistlewasatreat towitness.

WinningPortrayal

Ofalltheactorsinthe show,hewasthemost successfulinrevealing thedeeperqualitiesofthe nlayandalsoitsoccasionalmomentsofreality andpathos.

Thisyoungmanhasan obviousforteforlight comedy,butisnot,unfortunately,affordedthe chancetoplayitasoften ashemight.

Contrarytohisusual performances,heshowed noneofthestultification ofmovementandwooden passivity,thatisoften justlyattributedtohim.

Quitetothecontrary, hismovementswereentirelyrelaxedandfluid andhischaracterisation wasnotonlycompletely natural,butalsodelight- ful.Heprovidedanexcellentfoiltotheother twoconvicts,andatthe sametimeforgedasuchiscessfulpersonallinkwith audience.

PooleJohnsondisplay- edoncemore,hisvery formidabletalentsas Perth'sspecialisedcha-racteractor.Hedithered andflounderedaround stageinamostheartwarmingmanner.Occasionallyhis"patinaof technique"slippedslight- ly,butneversufficientlytomarhisperformance.

InIndia,whereIonce livedforafewyears,the LittleSisterstoldusthe storyofhowonceSt.Joseph foundthemahorse.Itwas inCalcutta,oncetheold capitalofIndia,inBengal. Theregharrieswereused, andtheLittleSistershada bigshabbyoldonethattook themontheirbeggingexcursions,whichsuppliedthe dailyfoodforthemanyold peopletheyfedandhoused.

Inthecourseofhisannual reportthegeneralsecretary congratulated Monsignor Collinsonthehonourconferredonhimduringthe pastyearwhenhewas elevatedtothedistinction ofaDomesticrelate.

TheDayofRosariesconductedbythesocietyduringthepastyearhadbeen outstandingly successful, Mr.Foleysaid.Lastyear thesixenclosedretreats hadbeenmadeby240 members.Thesocietywas greatlyindebtedtotheretreatmaster(FatherMorrison)andtothepriestsof theRedemptoristMonastery forthespiritualtreatwith whichtheywereprovided attheseretreats.

ThenewBunburyDiocese hadbeenrepresentedby membersfromthreeofits branchesattheseretreats, whilstfourcountrybranches inthePerthUnionsent memberstotheretreat. Changeshadbeeneffected intheorganisationofthe sixretreatstobeconducted duringtheensuingyear.

SpeakingoftheBursary FundMr.Foleysaidthat whenthereportwascompiled(attheendofFebruary)25brancheshad contributed£156/5/8.The rallyattheCathedralhad realised£60/19/8andthis,plusthe£271161-interest receivedoninvestedmoney, ensuredthesuccessofthe fundthisyear.

Returnssuppliedby branchesindicatedthatthe seniormembershipofthe societyincreasedfrom3,008 to3.139duringthepastyear, againof131whilstthe juniorranksgrewfrom822 to895,againof73.

Sincethelastconvention newbrancheshadbeen formedatDoubleview, SwanbourneandKewdale. Againof204member duringtheyearwaspleasing,butbranchesmightreexaminetheirrecordsto ascertainthesuccesswhich hadattendedtheirefforts topersuadementojoin theranksofthesociety.

beencontinuedthroughouttheyear,whilstspecial visitstomeetbranchexecutiveswereinauguratedand itwashopedtocontinue themintheensuingyear.

InconclusionMr.Foley paidtributetothezealand enthusiasmofthespiritualdirector(FatherAhern)andspokeofthenumerouscalls madeonhistimeintheinterestsofthesociety. Thankswasdueto"The Record"forthepublicityit hadsogenerouslyafforded thesociety.

Thefinancialstatement, presentedbythetreasurer (Mr.W.J.Roberts),dis- closedthattheaccountsof thesocietywereinasatisfactorycondition.

The thesecretaryannounced datesoftheretreatsfor theensuingyearasJune1516and22-23,July20-21 and27-28andAugust1718and24-25.

TheFarmers'Unionhas thefullsupportoffarming people,includingMrs.Currie-Jones,whobelievethat WestAustralia'sfutureis boundupforalongtimeto comeinitsprimaryproducts,andthatthereisno moregenerousrepayerof hardworkthanthesoil.

Miraculously,oneofthe Sistersstruggledashoreand rushedforhelpforhermore timidcompanionwhoselife wasbythistimeindanger.

Priest,doctorandpolice, aswellasotherrescuers soonarrived,butallefforts failedtorestorelifetothe recoveredbodyandSister's mortalremainswerelaid nrestintheBroomecemeteryonthefollowingday.

SisterM.Remedioswasa nativeofCarlow,Ireland, andwhenonthecompletion ofhernovitiatesheleftthe MotherHouseatWexford tojointheSistersofSt. JohnofGodatSubiaco, W.A.,herSuperiorsknewthattheyweresendingto AustraliaoneofIreland's noblestdaughters.

ForsixyearsSister labouredinthewardsof thehospitalsofSt.Johnof GodatSubiacoandGeraldtonwheresheendeared herselfaliketonursing Sistersandpatients.

LastyearSistervolunteeredtohelpwiththe ever-increasingworkofthe missionarybranchofthe OrderintheNorth-Westof lustraliaandtookupduty attheLeprosarium,Derby.

humansurmises,thegreatest possiblesacrificeandnobodywassurprised,for SisterwasamodelReligious withzealforsoulsandthe greatergloryofGodthe focusofallheractions.,

Whatanassettoany community,andwhatscope forherzeal-thepoor,the sick,thelepersthepagans, thechildren-allofwhom aresomuchinneedofthe careofGod'sfaithfulservantsofcharitybiddenby Him"TradetillIcome."

Alltheseearthlyworks palebeforethesupreme sacrificewhichGoddemandedofthisheroicsoul.
