InthecyclonewhichdevastatedareasoftheNorth-WestonFeb.14,themissionconductedamongtheaboriginesatBeagleBaybytheSocietyoftheCatholicApostolatesufferedseveredamage.Alargesectionofthemarriedquarters,churchandgardens weredamagedordestroyed.Thelossisestimatedatbetween£10,000-£15,000.The Rev.JohnMcGuire,S.C.A.,heregivesafirst-handdescriptionofaterrifyingexperience. thethreestores.Thethird onewastotallydemolished.
Thegirls'dininghallwas levelledto extensivethegroundand damagetothe verandahs,chapel,kitchen andrefectoryoftheconventwassuffered.Other buildingsdamagedwere the guest-house,Brothers'quarters, thebakeryand cartshed.
Ourfamedmother-ofpearshellchurchwassaved fromseveredamage,bythe windschangingdirection, thoughsomedamagewas wroughtonitssmallspires.
Allfivewindmillsatthe missionweredestroyed- laterweweretolearnthat anotherteninthebush werewrecked.Theenti$e bananaplantationwas wipedout,plushavoctoa numberofcoconuttrees, andthebuildingwheremilletbroomsaremadewas torndown.

Itcontinuedtorain throughoutWednesday,and duringthatnightitrained intorrents,andastrong windsprangupandby morningitwasdifficultto walkuptothechurch.However,Ididnotthinkthings wereamissandIstarted Mass.
Shortlyafterstarting,the candlesblewoutandassoon asBrotherwouldre-light them,theywouldbeout again.JustaftertheConsecration,dirtandduststartedtofallonthealtar.Ihad tokeepmyfingeronthe SacredHosttopreventIt frombeingblownawayand Iusedtocontinuallyblow thedirtoffIt.

Soonthealtarwasas dirtyasacountrylane,and Ihadtolevethetoponthe ciboriumasIgavetheabsolutionbeforedistributing HolyCommunion.Earlier myaltarboysdisappeared. Ilearnedafterwardsthat theyweretryingtoholdthe sidedoorsclosed.Between theceilingandthewallsof thesanctuary,therewasa twoinchgap;thisiswhat litteredthealtar.
Ihurriedoutsideandhad totakecoverbehindthe wingofthechurch,ashuge sheetsofironwerebeing tossedaboutlikepaper bags.Whilststandingthere IsawtheBrotherswaving metogetaway-thesmall churchtowerwasrocking toandfro,havingbecome crackedatthebase.Had itfallenIwouldhavebeen crushedtodeath.
Justthen,twoyoungmarriedmencameandasked
forthekeysforthehall, tellingmeallthehomewere downorbadlydamagedin themarriedquarters,and theywantedtoputtheold womenandthechildrenin thehall,theonlybuilding stillundamaged. Allthetimesheetiron waspassingbyus,thena tankfromabuildinga quarterofamileawayrolledpast;ithadobviouslybeenliftedovertreesand buildingstwentyfeetin height.
Itriedagaintogettothe dormitorieswheretheboys were,butitwasimpossible tododgetheiron,asit twistedinalldirectionsas itcametowardsme.Ihad tobecontenttomakef2fr themonasteryandwatch theboysastheyranfrom buildingtobuildingwith flyingtimberandsheetiron allaroundandoverthem.

Theypokedtheirheads roundcorners,andpulled themback,asmoreiron flashedby.Theglassofthe barometerwasdownto27 degrees,andastheintensity ofthewindincreased,one couldseetheneedlewavering.Bythistimethebuildingsattheeasternextreme ofthemissionwerestripped oftheirroofs.
Byrunningfromone buildingtoanother,the Brothersreachedthedifferentstoresandtriedto savethegoodsfromthe rain.Imadeforthedormitoriesandmetthebigger boyscarryingtheyounger onesacrossthemission squaretothechurch.Itwas amiraclethatnotoneof themwascutdownbythe flyingdebris.
Aswebattledtosavethe perishablegoodsandclothingfromthestore,the beamswerestillbeingrippedofffromaboveour heads;thensuddenlythe windchangedfromtheeast tothenorthandsoonmore sheetironwasbeinghurled acrossthemission.
Meanwhile,asBrother Frankwasleavingthenor-
therndoorof'thechurch, hefoundtwoSistersofSt. JohnofGodontheground withironflyingovertheir heads.
Althoughamanof68,he pickedthemupandsupportingoneoneacharm,he struggledagainstcyclonic windsfinallyreachingthe conventinsafety.TheSisterssaytheyowetheirlives tohim.
Atnineo'clockitwasall over.Theboysranover tomeandviewwitheach ithertotellwhatwasdestroyed.Onesaid:"Three windmillsaregone";anothersaid:"No!morebetter fivearegone."(Blessedyouth-thefiresofwondermentandadventureburn asbrightlyinthemasin boysthroughoutthewhole world).
ItoldonelittlefellowI wouldhavetosellhimto getmoney;ifsomepeople knewhimtheywouldpaya millionpounds.Hestarted toeasy.Iliketothinkit wasbecausehereckonsthe pricewastoolow.(Itwas too!)
AsIwentovertothe marriedquarters,myeyes filledandIcouldnotspeak tothepeoplecrowdingin thehall.Everyhomewas downordamaged,including tennewhomeswebuiltlast year.Twoofthesehad neverbeensleptin.Itlookedasthoughsomegianthad passedthrough.
Laterweheardstoriesof sheerheroism,astheyoung menrushedaboutatthe heightofthecyclone,drag- gingyoungandoldpeople fromwreckages,defyingthe flyingironsheetsblownoff thehousesastheycarried thesepeopletosafety, someofthemblind.
TheBrothersreported ourlossesatthemission centreitself.Alldormitories thevariousshopsinwhich tradesaretaught(suchas thecarpentery,blacksmith andmotorrepairshops) weredamaged,plustwoof

CrestwelltheButler, wasablyportrayedby Mr.KenBrougham,an actorofgoodreputation, deservedlyso.Thisper- formancedidnotmarhis reputation,butalsodid notenhanceitunduly.He istobecommendedfor hisportrayal,ashe 'iviouslyintendedto createthepictureofan
EnglishButler,thatmys- teriousmanofvague powers.
Inameasurehesucceeded,andcertainlyhe didnotmarthepictureof ana"istocratichousehold. However,heshouldbe criticised,notforhisinabilitytoremembercertainawkwardlinesand stillremainincharacter, butratherfortheinept mannerinwhichhetried toremedyhiserrors.
PaulChidlowasthe nephewplayedtolerably well,butseemedsomewhatoutofplaceinthe setting,Heremindedus ratheroftheToucan bird,"watchingallthat transpiredwithbright, beadyeyesandalookof birdlikewisdomonits face."
Incertainportionsof theplaywewouldnot havebeentheleastbit surprisedifhehadinclinedhisheadtoone sideandscreeched"pretty polly,prettypolly!"
Heistobelaudedfor hisintentionofneverbeing"deadonhisfeet" whileonstage,acontrast tooneortwoothermembersofthecast,butthis intention,combinedwith amarkedlackoftechnique,ledhimtocontinuallyflutterhiseye- lids,grimacewithamused mouesandgenerallytwist hisfaceintovarious peculiarshapesinanendeavourtoremainwith the"plotcontinuity" throughout.Apartfrom thesetechnicalerrors,we felthisperformancewas relativelyrelaxedandwe lookforwardtoseeing himinmorecomedy.
WilliamRawlinsonsurpassedhimselfwithhis portrayalofthesonand andheir.Hiswasthe finestperformanceofan animated,stuffedandup- endedsofa"onthe march,"thatIhaveever witnessed.Apity,ashe hasthelooksandthe voiceofanactor.
ThedualperformancesofMissDixieGeddesand Mr.GerryAtkinson,the twoAmericanfilmstars, wereamazingontheone handandadeqilateonthe other.
MissGeddes'performancewasamazing,asshe gaveusthedistinctimpressionofDixieGeddes playingMarilynMonroe playingAntigoneinburlesque.Hadshedivined theintentionoftheplaywrightregardingthe characterofherrole,her performancemighthave beenHervastlydifferent.Americanaccent was flavouredadequate,butwas bythestrange- nessofhercharacter.Had sheplayedwiththeairinessandsparklewebelieveCowardintended, theshowmightwellhave risentomuchgreater heights.
We convincedarenevertheless, thatonesectionofthetheatreenjoy- edherperformancetothe full,asshespentlarge portionsofhertimeaddressingherspeecheswith greatardourtosome twinspotsplacedjustbelowthelevelofthedress circle.
Mr.Atkinsonreminded usofaslightlytipsy garagemechanicfrom SanDiegowithhisper-formance.Nevertheless,it wasadequate.
GeorgeBurnsand GertrudeMillerasAdmiralHaving,andhis Lady,gavepleasingper-formances.Inwhatlittle
thatLadyHaylingsaid, wefeltthatshewasdefinitelyincharacter,and wewouldhavelikedto haveheardmore.Mr. BurnslookedlikeanAdmiral,butlackedtheirascibilityandauthority thatwentwithhischaracter.
Production:Setand Decor:Thiswasgood, butratherunimaginative,especiallyinthechoice ofcolours.Itreminded ustoomuchofthesame old withdrawing-roomset thesameoldpro- perties.

Aspromisedtoour readerslastissue,we havepleasureinincludingourcriticismofthe firstofthetwoplays presentedbyMissRachel Percy,underthepatronageofMissColleenClifford.
Direction:Althoughnot ofastartlingcalibre,the directionwasreasonably sound.Muchofourcriticismistemperedbythe knowledgethatMiss Percyproducedandactedinthisplayandinthe same andeveningproduced wrotethesecond play,"IncidentatStonewell."
