InterludeatStonewell:TheatreGuild,underthe directionofMissColleenClifford.Producer: MissRachelPercy.

Itisnotoftenthatsomeoneoutsideofan "Olivier"iscapableofproducingandactingin theoneplay;itisevenmoreraretofindthat thissamepersonisalsotheplaywright.But whenonediscoversthatayounglady,living locally,hasinthecourseofoneeveningproducedtwoplays,actedinone,andwrittenthe other,thenwethinkitalaudableachievement. Itwassurprisinglyconsiderable.

Thefirstplayofthe eveningwasaone-acter bySachaGuitry.with MissPercyinaleading role-aswellasbeing responsiblefortheproduction.

Owingtopriorcommitments, wewereunabletoreviewthisplay. However.inthelightof thehighstandardofproductionofthesecond playandthefavourable commentsoverheardfrom thosewhosawthefirst. weareobligedtoreturn tothetheatretomorrow nightforacritique.

ThePlay:"Incidentat Stonewell," is Miss Percy'sfirstattemptat playwrighting,sinceshe reachedamatureage.On variousoccasionsshehas writtenscriptsforthe YouthEducationDept.of theA.B.C..andisquite wellknownforherfeaturedtalksontheradio.

Itisnonetheless,afar cryfromwritingtalksandscriptstocreatinga vehiclesuitableforactors andembodyingthatveryessentialingredienttheatre.Itisquiteob- viousthatshehasakeenlydevelopedsenseof theatre,whichcombined withanobviousflairfor naturaldialogue,shouldstandheringoodstead forfutureproductions.

Viewingherliterary prowessdispassionately- andundernottoosearchingascrutiny,forthe moment-afaircomment mightbe,thatitistobe hopedthatshewillper- severewithherattempts.

Itmaybesafelyreckonedthatasherfacultiesofperceptionof humannatureanditsfallibilities,matureconjointlywithhertechnical abilitytowritethespoken word,thefinesseso necessarytoavoidmediocrity,willbecomemore apparentinherwork.

Sheistobecommendedfortheideaunderly- ingherplotandscript- thatof humanportrayingvery charactersina complexsituation, and

theirrespectiveemotional reactions.Aboveall,her intentiontocreatestark realismwithagoodadmixtureoftheatrical senseandtiming,islaudable.

Wefeel, however, that althoughherproduction wasdesignedforacast ofthree(usingonlyone set),thisveryfactobliges hertohaveconstructed herdialogueofvery strongmateriallestthe audiencegrowboredwith theactorsandthetheme oftheplay.

Regardingtheconstructionoftheplotitself,it has,becauseofitslimitations,definiteingrainedweaknesseswhichdonot assistthepassageofdialoguewhereonlytwo peopleareconcerned.

Foronething,inorder toestablishthelocaleand situationofthecharacters involved,andatthesame timecreatefluidity,it wasinescapablethat muchofthedialogueand plot,intheearlierparts oftheplay,shouldhave beenpallid.consistingof whatisknownas"pass thesugar"dialogue.

Fortunatelyheractors werecapableofrising abovethisdefect, which stemmednotfromMiss Percy'sinabilitytowrite compellingspeech, but rather causedfromnecessity bythelimitsimposedbyherplot.

Thisisafaultbywhich even writershighlyexperienced aretrapped, asit ispracticallyimpossible tosustainduologuewith-outtheaidofhighly peculiarandcomplex situations.

Neverthelessitmust besaidthatoncethe playwrighthadovercome her"preliminarybusiness,"theplaybeganto moveforward.andassumecolourandinterest Dialogue:

MissPercydisplayed araretalentwiththe handlingofthedialogue inthemoreemotinal partsoftheplay.Truthfullyspeaking, herdialoguethroughoutwas natural showedandlogical, and thatshehada greatawrenessofher characters'psychologicalmake-up. Takeninseparatecon-text,herinitialdialoguewasclever,andjustas itwouldbeinreallife, butbecauseofherplot construction, itcouldnot obviouslycontainenough senseoftheatretosustain anyinterestofahigh order.

Plansnowopenat

However, onefeltat times that certain speechesin particularlytheplay, thoseofthe girl, smackedlightlyof cliches withandhackneyism asomewhatmarked Americaninfluence.

This, wearesure,is notaninnateflawinher writing, butsprang ratherfromherchoice ofcharacters, thetheme oftheplayandperhaps acertainamountofinexperience. shouldTimeandpractice eliminatethe roughercoatingofher dialogueandleavethat mostvaluableinnercasing-thenormaland naturalwayinwhichher charactersspeak. Characterisation:

Thefacetofwritingis soindeliblyapartofdialogueitself.thatverylittleremainstobesaid regardingit.Webelieve thattheplaywrightknew whathercharacters wouldfeel, andalsoin whatwaytheywould react, butininterpreting thoseemotionsinto spokenlines, wefeelshe lostasmallportionofthe truedepthandqualityof whatsheintendedtoconvey.

Beingherfirstperformedplay,thispointisnot ofgreatimportance,as oncemorewefeelthat practicewillmakeperfect.However,shemight dowelltobewareofallowingherdialogueto vergeonthesideof melodrama,unlessshe intendscreatingmelodrama.

Ifhercasthadbeenof lessercalibrethisweaknessmighthavebeen moreapparent.

Onefinalpoint,which allwritersshouldbear heavilyinmind,isthis: Humourisatitsgreatest potency-inthepithof drama-andmoreso tragedy.Whatinnocentlyseemstobealineof greatemotionandpathos, whentransmutedbythe voicemaywell"slaythe audiencein.theirseats."

Onoccasionthistype oflineiswellnighunavoidable:whenthis occurs, theresponsibility fallsontheshouldersof theactor, whomustkeep watchfulvigilancethat hedoesnotunintentionallybecomeadroll comedian.

Direction: Althoughtheproducer was, forthegreaterpart, inpossessionof"vessels" capableoffaithfullyreproducingherideas, one coulddetectthefinehand ofdirectioninmany partsoftheshow.

TherealtestofMiss Percy'squalitiesasadirectorwillbemoreapparentwhenshedirects aplayotherthanher own.Thiswehopeto indicatewhenwereview "VillaForSale"next week.

Consideringthedifficultiesunderwhichshe worked, herrelativeinexperienceasadirector, andthefactthatitwas herOWNplay-more oftenthannotadisadvantagefromacreationaldirectingpointof view-wefeelthather productiontechniquewas ofgoodstandard.

Inplaces.itwasobviousthatdirectionwas somewhatslack,butit wasnotpainfullynoticeable,andshouldbetemperedwiththerealisation oftheobstaclesthatbesetherpath.

Acting: Overall,thiswasof sitrprisilyiagoodstandard.

JohnGoldsmithgavea brilliantperformanceas thestationhand,beingin allrespectsafaithfulreproductionofthecharacterashewasenvisaged bytheauthoress.His accentwasnatural,withoutbeingoftooheavya quality,whichcouldhave marredhisperformance.

Hismovementssmackedoftheveryquintessenceofthebashful countryboy, anditwas clearlyapparentthathe waslivinghispart. He andthedirectorareto becommendedforavoidingoneerrorintowhich theymightwellhave easilyfallen-thatof makinghimacomic figure.

MissValBowen.who playedthegirlinthe piece,seemedillatease andacutelystageconsciousduringtheearlier partofherportrayal.

Oneenvisagesthis youngactressinpartsof merryhumourandsatire orequally emotionalwellinheavy parts-this lattercommentbeing occasionedwhenshe "emoted"themoremovinglinesofherpart.

Shemightbeware.In thefuture,ofthedanger ofoverplayingarole. Thiswillbelargelya matterforfuturedirectors-asshepossessesgreatwellsofemotion,butwithoutfinedirection -theymaywelloverflow.
