BAYSWATERCHURCHEXCEEDS MOSTSANGUINEHOPES

Bayswater'snewChurchofSt.Columbaexceededhismost sanguinehopesandexpectations,saidHisGracetheArchbishop aftersolemnlyblessingthenewshrineonSundaylast.

"Isawtheplansofthis churchwhenthebuildingwas firstcontemplatedandIwas verypleasedwiththem.I sawthebuildinginthecourse oferectionandwaspleased withtheprogressofthework. butthecompletedbuilding whichIhaveseentodayhas exceededmymostsanguine honesandexpectations."said HisGrace.

HisGraceremarkedthat thenewchurchwasdignified inconstructionanddevotional.Itwassufficientlycommodioustocaterfortheneeds oftheparishanditwasembellishedandequippedina dignifiedandliturgicalmannerWhenthegroundswere improved,asheunderstood theyweretobeimproved,the newchurchwouldappearstill morebeautiful.

HisGraceextendedcongratulationstothearchitect, Mr.A.0.O'Hara,andtothe builders,T.S.PlunkettPty. Ltd.

Hesaidthattheoldchurch haddoneserviceformore than50yearsanditspassing wouldbegrievedbymany,but forsomeyearsitwasevident thatithadbecometoosmall tofilltheneedsofthegrowingpopulation.Theoriginal intentionwastoextendthe oldchurch,butinquiriesrevealedthatsuchaproposal wasneithereconomicalnor practical.

FatherRussell(theparish priest)wascalleduponto makeabigdecision,buthe andthoseassociatedwith himhadcourageouslydeterminedtobuildanewchurch andallwouldagreewiththe wisdomoftheirdecision.

Todaytheyrealisedtheir longcherishedambitionand alljoinedwiththeminthe joytheysonaturallyfeltin theiraccomplishment.

FatherRussell'squietbut firmleadershiphadbeenan inspirationtohispeopleand theparishionershadrespond-edtosuchleadership,cooperatingwithhimandmakingsacrificesfortheaccomplishmentoftheprojectshe pr000sed.

He(theArchbishop)learnt with'pleasurethatduringthe pasttwelvemonthsthepeoplehadcontributedmorethan £1000towardstheCostofthis newchurch.Hecongratulatedthemoneandallon theirachievement.

Thepeoplewereasmucha partofthethischurchas werethewallspartofthis building.Justasthestone andbricksinthisstructure borethestressesandstrain ofthisbuildingsowerethe peoplethelivingstonesinthe spiritualedflceofthechurch. eachbearinghisandher shareoftheburdensandresponsibilitiesentailedinmembershipofthechurch,burdens associatedwiththegrowth ofthechurchandtheconversionoffellowAustralians

Afterdealingwiththesymbolismofheavenandearth representedbythesanctuary andthenaiveFatherChallis remarkedthatthe'crucifix abovethealtarasthefocal pointofthechurchremindingthemthatthroughthe sacrificialdeathofChriston thecrosstheycouldpass fromearthtoheaven. Hesaidthatmanywereregretfulthattheoldchurch hadpassedoutofuse,forit hadbeensolongtheir spiritualhome.Forhisown parthehadmadehisfirst Confession,receivedhisfirst HoleCommunionandbeen Confirmedinthisoldchurch. Hewouldeverrecallthatit wasthechurchinwhichhe offeredhisfirstMass. Ithadbeenthesceneofso muchwhichhadgonetomake uptheirspirituallivesthat theyregretteditspassingout ofuse,buttheymightbe Proudoftheachievement whichthisnewchurchrepresented. Itmaywellservethe sniritualneedsofthepeople

ofBayswaterforseveralcen-turiesandduringallthose longyearsitwouldbeliving witnessofthepresenceand teachingofChristintheir midst.Generationsyetto conicwouldrecogniseitas thelivingsymbolofthetrue churchfoundedbyChrist himself.

Inmovingintothisnew churchtheymightatfirst missthedevotiOnalatmospheretheyassociatedwiththeoldbuilding,butasthey becomeaccustomedtoitthis senseoflosswoulddisappear Whatgaveachurchthisatmospherewasnotitsarchitecturalfeaturesortheemblishmentswithwhichitwas equipped.butfrequentvisitationbythepeople,thecon stantandregularreceptionof thesacramentswithinits wallsandattendanceatthe SacrificeoftheMass. Theclosertheylivedtothis churchandunderstoodits symbolism,themorethey wouldbecomeattachedtoit. ThischurchwasthelinkbetweenthemandJesusChrist andasthatlinkgrewstrongerandstronger,andasthe newnessfadedfromthis structuresowoulditbecome notonlyafamiliarpartof thelandscapebutafamiliar andintimatepartoftheir dailylives. LastmonththePrioryChapeloftheDominicanSistersatDongarawasonceagainthe sceneofjoyfulcelebrations,whenSister MaryPeterattainedthegoldenjubileeof herreligiousprofessionandSisterMarySt. Annecelebratedhersilverjubilee.

"Icongratulateyou,Fathes. Russell,onthewonderful workyouhavedoneandare doinginthisparish,and knowingthespiritofgenerostyandpreparednessto makesacrificesoevident amongstyourpeopleyouhave noreasontobeperturbedregardingthedebtincurredin theerectionofthisbuilding," theArchbishopconcluded.

InthecourseofaneloquentsermonFatherChallis explainedlucidlysomeofthe symbolismofthechurch.As theyenteredbythefront door,hesaidtheysawfirst thebaptisimalfonttoremindthemthatthesacramentof baptismwasthedoortoa spirituallife.

Astheymovedintothe churchtheyquicklybecame awareofthegreatdivision betweenthesanctuaryandnaive.Theformerwasreservedforthebishopsand clergyandthenaivewasreservedfortheuseofthe people,conformingwiththe orderlaiddownbyGodfor HisChurch.

Itremindedthemthatin conformitywithsuchorder thepriestwassetasidefrom thepeople,consecratedtothe serviceofGod.Justasthe sanctuaryandthenaivewere necessarytomakeupa churchinthematerialsense, sodidthepriestandthepeoplemakeupthechurchof Christ.

ApplecrossSchoolTo OpenExtensions

WiththeinaugurationbyHisGracethe ArchbishopofasecondextensiononSunday next,theparishofApplecrosswillhave ampleeducationalfacilities.

Withtheinaugurationby HisGracetheArchbishopof asecondextensiononSundaynext,theparishofAppiecrosswillhaveample educationalfacilities. Erectedcanonicallyasa parishin1952,thefirstparish priest,theRev.A.Lynch openedtheschoolChurch ofSt.Benedictthefollowing year.

Twoyearslaterhefound itnecessarytoextendthe building.Achapel,classroomandmusicroomwere added. Asthedistrictcontinued toexpand,thecurrentextensionsbecamenecessary.

Twonewclassrooms,built inbrickandtilebythedevotedself-helpcontributed byadevotedbandoflaymen,

wereconstructedforacost of£2000. St.Benedict'sschool,conductedbytheSistersofOur LadyoftheMissions,now providesformorethan200 children.

Thetwonunsenteredthe ConventofMercy,Adelaide, in1894.

SisterIgnatiusClarewas oneofthefoundationmembersoftheSistersofMercy inCoolgardie,wheresheremainedfor42years,returnedtoSouthAustraliaits1939.

SisterMadeleinealsowent toCoolgardiein1904butreturnedtwoyearslaterto teachinAdelaide.

WhileSisterM.Peter, whosehealthandstrength hadbeenworndowninthe serviceofGodandsoulson themissionswaswaitingfor therewardofherlabours,she continuedtosavesoulsbyher lifeofprayerandpatience inherapostolateofsickness. HeprayedthatGodwould showerHisblessingsonboth jubilarians,andthattheirexamplewouldinspiremany otherstofollowintheirfootstepsandcontinuetocarry themessageoftheGospelto theoutbackpartsofthediocese. JosefThesereportsquoteDr MacekofthePrague AcademyofScienceassay- ingthatmembersoftheassociationare"justlyproud" ofbeingcalledatheists.

Oneoftheproposedfilms, reportsstate,purportsto showhowChristianitydevelopedoutoffolksuperstitionsandpractices,thus denyingitsdivineorigin.

Twootherfilmswillshow thepositiveroletheChurch hasplayedinthehistoryof Westerncultureandthen showwhattheRedsclaimis itsroleinthe"degeneration" oftheworld. Theseatheisticactivities areinkeepingwiththepro- SovietpoliciesoftheRed Governmenthere.Sincethe relaxationofanti-Church propagandainPolandand thedisasteroftheHungarianuprisingtheRussianshave strengthenedtheirholdon Czechoslovakia,returningto theoldStalinistlineand attackingtheChurchatevery opportunity.

ToleranceBasedonMoralPrinciple NotOpportunism

Lausanne,Switzerland,Feb.4:ThetoleranceoftheCatholic Churchtowardsotherchurchesandreligionsisnotbasedonop- portunismbutuponamoralprinciple,makingitobligatoryfor hertopractisetoleranceofotherswithinthelimitsofpublicorder.

Thiswasthestatementoftheuncompromisingattitudeattitudewhichisattheroot BishopFrancoisCharriereoftheChurchonmattersofoftrueunderstandingand ofLausanne,Genevaanddoctrine,sinceitisthisverytoleranceindailylife." WhenFascism,overturnedbymilitarydefeat, suddenlycrumbledandademocraticgovernment hadtobeorganisedafter20veorsofpoliticaland moralmiseducation,thefactthatasubstantialand intelligentreligiousfeelingwasstilloliveinmany ItalianskepttherealmenaceofCommunismfrom makiligmoreprogressthanitdidinthepost-war Vacuum.Thiswasmodepossiblebytheyearsin whichCatholicshadpreparedthemselves,ifsometimesonlytheoretically,fortheirnewduties.While otherdemocraticpartiesinItalywerefoundedon unclearandthereforeunstablephilosophies,Catholicstakingpartinpubliclifeofferedafoundation ofessentialprinciplesforthereconstructionofthe nationafterthewar.Thisdoesnotmeanthatthis reconstructionwasaccomplishedinanidealmanner.ThepreparationofCatholicswhoentered publiclifewasforthemostporttheoretical.They lackedpracticalexperience.Buttheirworkheld backtheCommunistthreatandgaveItalytimeto achievemoral,economic,socialandpoliticalprogress,thusmakingstabledemocraticgovernment possible.

Buttheunnaturalstructureofseculareducationisbeginningtoshowpronouncedsymptoms ofmoralcrisisinducedbymonstrousinternal strains.Itisbecomingindisputablethattheideal ofgoodcitizenshipisnotasufficientmotivefor goodbehaviourandthatcivicsisnotreallyasatisfactorysubstituteforreligion.Hencesomekind ofreligiousknowledgeisnowbeingintroducedby thebackdoorintheshapeofScriptureclassesfor StateHighSchools.Suchaprojectmustnecessarilyinvolveitssponsorsinallkindsofdifficulties. Foronethingitwillbenecessaryintreatingthe NewTestamenttopresentsomekindofnon-doctrinalChristianity.Forthispurposeitwillbe essentialtoby-passthecentralquestionofthe NewTestament:"WhatthinkyeofChrist?Whose SonisHe?"Itwillscarcelybepossibletoassert theDivinityofChristasitwillbetodenyit. Hencesomekindofabsurdhumanismwilldevelop, unpalatablealiketoChristianandinfidelpupils andteachers.

Itwillplaceaparticularlyheavyburdenonthe shouldersofCatholicteachersbecausetheomissionofcentraltruthsfromtheChristianrevelationvitiateitsentirecontent.IfChristisGod everythingelseinthecorpusofdoctrinefollows automaticallybecauseGodcannoterr.Whatthe secularistsfailtorecogniseisthatapurely humanisticapproachtoChristrepresentsthe takingofareligiousside-thatofdenialofheresy.

SlaughterInJapanTakes Over2,000,000Lives

Itisnotpossibletobeneutralonapointwhich concernsnotonlyreligiousconsiderationsbutone aboutwhichthewholeofhistoryrevolves.Nor indeedisitpossiblefortheindividualteacherto divesthimselfofhisparticularphilosophyoflife. TheversionofthelifeandsignificanceofChrist taughttotheHighSchoolstudentsmustnecessarilybecolouredbythepersonalviewsofthe teacherandconveyedinathousandsubtle,perhapsunconsciousways.

Itisnotaneasymattertodecidewhetheran insufficientknowledgeofChrististobepreferred abovenoknowledge.Butitisquiteclearthatignoranceispreferabletofalseknowledge.One wonderswhytheprocedurefololwedintheprimaryschoolsisnotobservedinthiscase,i.e.,the provisionofperiodsforreligiousinstructionwhen thedelegatesofparticulardenominationsinstruct theirownfollowers.Thisisanimportantmatter forCatholicssincecreditrestrictionshavenot enabledecclesiasticalauthoritiestokeepuptothe demandforschoolsandthedearthofvocations precludesthestaffingofthem.Inevitablymore CatholicchildrenareattendingStateschoolsand someregularisedprocedurehastobeadoptedto keepthemintouchwiththeFaith.TheScripture classeswillbeoflittleornohelpintheirregard. Whattheymaymeantonon-Catholicandpagan childrenremainstobeseen.Buttheinteresting thingisthatthesecularistconscienceisuneasy.

Thereisanothermatterinwhichsecularismhas failedyouth.Itisinthematterofreformschools fordelinquentyouths.Forlongyearsthereligious denominationshaveprovidedsuchfacilitiesaccordingtotheirmeansandwithlittlehelpexcept criticismfromGovernmentalagencies.Apparently indissatisfactionwiththereformprocessthe Governmentsetupitsowninstitution,whichwas presumablytobeamodelofwhatcouldbedone withadequatefinanceandtrainedstaff.Todate theexperimenthasprovedafiasco.Onerefersto theStonevilleReformatorytheexistenceofwhich ourmorningcontemporarytreatsasatop-drawer secret("aninstitutionintheDarlingRanges") butwhichoureveningcontemporary(asubsidiary)openlynames.Whateverthetruthof thematter,theStateisnotlikelytohavemuch successinthereformingofmoralswithouttheaids whichreligiousdisciplinealonecanprovide.Itis nothavingmuchluckwithnormalchildren;one wonderswhenceitssuddencompetencewithdifficultcasesarises!

THEFIRSTMISSIONSTATIONinNorthAustraliawasestablishedjustover100 yearsagoatPortEssingtonbyFatherAngeloConfalonieri,who,althoughhe couldnotswim,survivedashipwrecktobeginhisworkofconvertingthenatives, ThisaccountofeventsleadinguptoFatherConfalonieri'sarrivalintheNorth,hisexplorations,mapdrawings,andconversion oftheaborigineswaswrittenbyMr.E.M.Christie,editorofthe"VictorianHistoricalMagazine"andformerlyaGovernment officialatDarwin.

ONJanuary7,1846,Dr.Brady(afterwardsthefirstCatholicBishopof Perth,WesternAustralia)arrivedat FremantlepershipElizabeth,accompaniedby sevenpriests,asubdeaconwhowasanEnglish Benedictine,aFrenchnovice,oneItalian,eight catechists,andsevenIrishSistersofMercy.These peoplehadleftLondonasmissionariesforthe purposeofconvertingtheaboriginesofWestern Australia.

OneofthepriestswasAngeloConfalonieri,and andanotherwasRudosindoSalvadowho,with GiuseppeSerra,foundedtheMissionofNewNorciainWesternAustralia.

Soonafterlanding,Dr.Bradyheldacouncil forthepurposeofdevisingplansfortheconversionoftheaborigines,anditwasdecidedtofollow themintothebush.Threecompanieswereformed:1,theMissionoftheNorth(PortEssington); 2,theMissionoftheSouth(KingGeorge's Sound);3,theCentralMission(laterNewNorcia).

ThemembersoftheSouthernMissionleftPerth onFebruary6,1846,andwentonfoottoAlbany, relyingonthekindnessofthesettlersforfood. Supplieswereprecarious;andwiththehealthof thepartygivingway,theworkoftheSouthern Missionwasabandoned,andthememberstransferredtoMauritius.RodesindoSalvadoandthe otherSpanishpriest,GuiseppeSerra,joinedthe CentralMission,andlaterestablishedNewNorcia.

OnMarch1,1846,anopportunityoccurredfor thosemembersrepresentingtheMissiontothe NorthtoembarkatFremantleforSydney.The companycomprisedDonAngeloConfalonieriand twoIrishcatechists,JamesFaganandNicholas Hogan.OnarrivingatSydneythepartyfoundthat theirfinanceswereexhausted,theonlyprovision madeforfundstocarrythemtoPortEssington being"oneortwocasesofbookstobesoldin Sydney."

AgainstBishopBrady'sexpectations,thesaleof thesedidnotcomeabout,sothathewas"constrainedtogivetoFatherConfalonierioneofhis billsfor£100,which,however,couldnotbecashed tilltheVenerableFatherMcEncroeofSydneyendorsedit.Fromthatdaytillhisdeath,FatherMcEncroeremained£100thepoorerforhischarity."

FromSydney,FatherConfalonieriandhistwo companionssetsailforPortEssingtononApril8. Unfortunately,thevessel,wheninTorresStraits, ormorepreciselyinEndeavourStrait,waswrecked andCaptainMackenzieandDonAngeloConfalonierialoneescapedasthoughbyamiracle. ThetwoIrishcatechists,thecrewandtherestof thepassengersperished.

FatherConfalonierigivesthefollowingparticularsofthewreck:"Ihadjustpartedwithmydear companions,JamesFaganandNicholasHogan, whenwestruckonareefaboutTorresStraits.In afewmomentsallhandsweredrowned,orperhapskilledbythefallingofmastsandothertimber.Messrs.FaganandHoganweregoodswimmers,yettheyandallonboardperished,except thecaptainandmyselfwhocouldnotswimbut who,throughthegoodnessofGod,escaped.

Todayithas2482monasterieswith26,151friars,15,242 ofthempriests.Amongits presentmembersarethe LatinPatriarchofJerusalem,13 archbishops,65 bishopsand15vicarsapostolic.

BISHOPBRADY-FirstBishopofPerth. providentlylaidholdof.-rtecaptainhelpedmeas muchashecould,forIwasbothwoundedandex hausted.Wemassagedtogettosomerocks,.and nextdaywewerepickedupbyabarque,theEnchantress(CaptainYul),andbroughttoPort Essington,wherethecommandant(CaptainMcArthur)andpeopleshoweduseverycareintheir power."Hearrivedalmostnakedandoweditto thehumanenessofthecommandant,aProtestant, forbeingprovidedwitheverythingheneeded,and hisgratitudetohisbenefactors.

FatherConfalonierihadlittletodoinVictoria, thecapitalofthesettlementatPortEssington.He livedwhollyaloneandestablishedhimselfnearthe entranceoftheharbour,ataplacecalledBlack Rock,ontheoppositesidetoVictoria,andsome 14milesdistant.Hishousewasbuiltwiththehelp oftheaborigines,andhisministrationswere mostlyconfinedtothenatives,towhomhetaught theprayersoftheChurch.

Aboutmid-yearof1846hesetouttoexplore CoburgPeninsula,andtomeetallthetribes,of whichherecordsseven,andtomapoutthecountry.Besidesthemapwhichhemade,heprepared asmallvocabularyofthenativedialectsoftribes onthePeninsula;amanuscriptprayerbook,with ashortcatechismofChristianDoctrine,withthe Lord'sPrayer,HailMaryandCreed,theTenCommandments,andashorthistoryofthePassionof OurRedeemer.allinthedialectofthePortEssingtontribe.

InJune1848,oneofthegarrisonfromthesettlementhappenedtocallatFatherConfalonieri's house,anddiscoveredthathewasillwithfever. CaptainMcArthurinalettertoArchbishopPoldingsays:"Wemissedhimforafewdaysand whenwewenttohishutonVictoriaRiver(?) wefoundhimdyingoffever.Hewasbroughtto thesettlementbutwastoofargonetorecover. Weburiedhimwithallhonours.Theentiresettlementattendedhisfuneral."

ChurchinAustralia,saysConfalonieridiedatMelvilleIsland,butthisisnotcorrect.

FatherConfalonieri"wasaTyrolesestudentfrom thePropagandaCollegeatRome.Thereisalife ofFatherConfalonieripublishedinItalian.His papers,vestmentsandchaliceweresentbythe commandantofPortEssingtonsettlementtoArchbishopPolding.Themap,papersandtranslations wereafterwardsforwardedtoPropagandaCollege tobekeptinthearchivesofthatestablishment.

AcopyofthemapwaspresentedtotheRoyal GeographicalSociety(SouthAustralianBranch) bythelateBishopReynoldsinJanuary,1888,but noparticularsrelatingtoitwerethenavailable. SubsequentlytheBishopsuppliedthedetailsas outlinedinthispaper.

Althoughsearchhasbeenmadeamongtheruins ofthesettlementofVictoriaatPortEssingtonby BishopGselloftheNorthernTerritory,thewhereaboutsofFatherConfalonieri'sgravehasnotbeen satisfactorilylocated.

AfewdaysafterFatherConfalonieri'sdeath,a casearrivedatVictoriaaddressedtohimand marked"PosaPiano."Thegarrisonhadvisionsof music,imaginingthecasetocontainsomeinstrumentforuseinhisservices,butthecontentsturnedouttobevestmentsandaltarfurniture,and theinscriptionmerelystoodfortheequivalentof our"HandlewithCare."

BothRudesindoSalvadoandDomSerra,the foundersofthemissionsettlementofNewNorcia inWesternAustralia,wereelectedasBishopsof PortVictoria,NorthAustralia.BishopSerrawas consecratedin1848,andBishopSalvadoin1849. ThelatterwasappointedAbbotofNewNorciain 1867.ThereisnoevidenceofeitherBishopever havingvisitedPortEssington.

Thattherearepersonalresponsibilitiesattachingtoimmigrationisreadilydemonstrated.Itis sufficientsimplytostatetheelementarytruththat man,madetoGod'simageandlikenesshasaright tosharethegoodsofaworldcreatedbyGodfor man'suseandbenefit.Tothisdictumofthe naturallawmaybejoinedthatorderwhichinsiststhatabsolutesovereigntymaynotbeexercisedbyanynation.Itfollowsthatmenshallbe freetomovefromplacetoplacefortherightenjoymentofthisearth'sgoodsandsimilarlythat manshallnotbeforcedfromhishomeanddeprivedunlawfullyofhisgoods.

Inthesemoderntimes,mostmenwhobecome emigrantsdosofromanecessityputuponthem unlawfully.Certainperiodsofhistoryarereferred tobydifferentnames-the"GoldenAge"-the "AgeofLearning."Thispresentageissurelytobe calledthe"AgeoftheRefugee."Neverhasthere beenwitnessedsuchenforcedexpulsionsof peoples,suchrankinjustices,suchenslavement andtorturingsofmenasinthisageofso-called enlightenmentandscientificprogress.

Likepilgrimsofthenightthousandsupon thousandsofhumanbeingshavesoughtandare seekingarestingplace,whichtoooftenandwith toomanyisdeniedthem.Itistheircausethatthe presentHolyFatherpleadswhenHedeclares: "freeaccesstotheearth'sbounty,whichiseverywhereadequatetosupportmultitudesofhuman beings,shouldnotbedeniedtoneedyandworthy personsbornelsewhere,"andwho,becauseofre-

Trulyarethereresponsibilitiesgreatandpersonalalliedtoimmigration.Inconscienceandin charity,noonemayturnasidefromobligationsso clearlypresentandofsuchmomenttomillionsof fellowhumanbeings.Intheacceptanceofthese responsibilitiesandtheirfulfilmentthereis,as rarelybefore,atranslationintoactionofSt.Paul's exhortation:"Bearoneanother'sburdensandyou willfulfilthelawofChrist."Inthis,actualityis giventothewordsofChristHimself'Iwasa strangerandyouletMeIn."

Apracticalformwhichmaybeaccordedthese responsibilitiesisthetwofoldoneofPrayerand Action.

Prayer,astheHolyFatherHimselfproposes,"to MaryHelpofChristians,thatShewillbealoving Mothertoallwhomfatehasforcedtoliveapart fromtheirnativelands."

Action,-Welcomeguidance,supportformany "whoseplight,"againinthewordsoftheHoly Father,"isastarkchallengetoChristiancompassion."

PrayerandActionwillfosteranapostolatefor theimmigrant;willstimulateandencouragegenerousheartedAustraliansinfindingaccommodationandworkforneedypeoplewhoaskbutthe chancetostartanewhome,toknowsecurityand freedom,togivetheirchildrenafuture.

Prayeragain,andActionwillurgeCatholicsto giveallpossiblesupporttotheofficiallyconstituted FederalandDiocesanCommitteesdevotingmuch timeandexpendingmuchmoneyinmigration work.

HowproductivehasthecommunistsystemprovedtobeinPoland?

In1955,Poland'scoalminesdidindeedproduce 20,500,000moretonsofcoalthanin1949,whenan ambitioussix-yearplanwasannounced.But15.5 percentoftheminers'workinghoursduring1955 wasovertime.

Soldiersandprisonershadbeenaddedtothe ranksoftheminers.Machinerywasallowedto deteriorate.And,wheretheaveragecoalminer produced1,328kilogramsofcoalperdayin1949, heminedonly1,163kilogramsperdayin1955.

Communistcooperativefarmsoccupied8.6per centofthearablelandandstatefarms12.6per centduring1955.Butthecooperatives,producing only7.7percentofthetotalagriculturalyield,and statefarmsproducingbut8.4percent,provided togetheronly16percentofallproduce.

Theaveragevalueoftheyieldfromprivatelyownedfarmsin1955was621.1zlotysperhectare (whichequals2.47acres).Cooperativefarmproducewasvaluesatbut517.3zlotysperhectareand thestatefarmsat393.7zlotys.

ALTHOUGHourmodern schoolsareremarkable, therearesomephases oftheirworkthatcouldbeimproved. Wedonotperformwell,forinstance, inourteachingorlearningofforeign languages.Thereareexceptionsto thisrule,buttheyarenotnumerous.

WEMUSTLEARN

ItisraretomeetanAustralian, eventhoughhebeacollegeprofessororanecclesiastic,whocancarry onaneasyconversationinsome well-formedancientlanguagesuchas LatinorclassicalCreek.Yetthere aresuchmenonearth.Latinisoften usedforconversationinRomeand particularlyaroundtheVatican.

Whynothere?Thereasonisthat weusefutilemethodsinourstudyof thislanguage.Aboygoesintohigh schoolandimmediatelytakesupa textbookthatgiveshimaprimitive ideaofthegrammarandvocabulary, butforthemostpartthewordshe learnsareworthlessinexpressing theideasofevery-daylife.

Irememberthatmyhighschool courseinLatinconsistedofabook thatintroducedmetothedeclensions,theconjugations,andavocabularyofabout600wordsdevoted mostly'toancientmilitarylife;Iwas abletouseLatinthatyearinfollowingtheOrdinaryofSundayMass, butcertainlymyknowledgegaveme nofluencyinthelanguage.

Inthesecondyear,Istudied Caesar'sGallicWars.Icanimagine nothingmoreunsuitedtoinspirea childortogivehimausefulknowledgeofLatin.

Inthethirdyear,wewentthrough Cicero'sOrations.Theyaremagnificentintheirrhetoric,butstillwe hadtofollowthembylookingupalmosteverywordinthevocabulary furnishedattheendofthebook.

Inthefourthyear,westudiedVergil'sAeneid.Althoughthisworkis consideredthebestpoetryinthe Latinlanguage,iswritteninheroic hexameter,andhasbeencalledthe stateliestmeasureevermouldedby thelipsofman,itiscompletelyunappreciatedbysomehighschool students,whoareforcedtowade throughitbylookingupalmost everywordinthevocabularyatthe backofthetextbook.

Manyschoolsnowusereadersfor thestudyofLatin,notthecomplete textoftheclassics;but,though somestudentsgetagraspofthe language,expertsinitarenotatall numerous.

IsupposeIgotafaircoursein Latin,forIalwaysmadedecent marksand,when,afteraconsiderabletimespentinjournalisticwork andtrainingandalengthycritical studycourseofEnglishclassics,I decidedtostudyforthepriesthood, Iwasabletogetwhatwasnecessary outofmyLatintext-booksandlater outoftheliturgicalworksofthe Church.Ialsotookaspecialcourse inwritingLatin.

ButIhavenotmetmorethan fourorfiverealLatinscholars amongAustraliansinmylonglife. ThemodernwaysofteachingLatin arenoteffective.Ayoungsterhas littlechancetolearnitwell.We needanentirelynewapproach.

INLATIN?

TheodoreMaynardintheartof makinghistoryentertaining.Ibelieveintheclassicsallright,but theyoughttobereadinhighschool byaboyorgirlwhohasaworking knowledgeofthelanguagetobegin with.

ThenuancesofVergilwereentirelylostonmewhenIwastryingto strugglethroughhisthoughtswith theaidofashabbylittlevocabulary inthebackofthebook.Inmyhigh schooldays,Iwasgivenalmostno traininginwritingLatin;yetthe wayIreallylearnedEnglishwasby writing,writing,writingit,andreadingreading,reading,readingits masters.

Weareallashamedofourignoranceoflanguagesinthiscountry. Yetthereisawayout.

METHODHASBEENFOUND FORPRACTICALLESSONS

AmannamedBerlitzinventeda methodofteachingmodernlanguagesthatissimplebutthatreally works.Yearsago,whenIwasinill healthandwasorderedbydoctors eithertospendmonthsinbedorto getoutofthecountryandaway frommostofmyeditorialworkfor atleastthreemonths.Itookmy priestbrotherwithmeandwewent toRome.

Wevisitedsomeotherportionsof Europe,suchasLondon,Paris,and SouthernItaly,butwegavemostof ourtimetoRome.IdeterminedI wouldreallyknowthatheartofall moderncultureandoftruereligion, andIconsiderthosethreemonths oneofthemostprofitableperiodsof mylife.

1wasoftenattheVaticanandSt. Peter's,andIsawallthefamous shrinesofRome.Cardinalsand others,whentheyfoundthatIwas aneditor,tookmarvellouscareof gettingmeintoplacesandoccasions thattheaveragetouristfindsdifficultofaccess.IhavebeeninRome severaltimessince,butthosethree monthswereeye-openers.MyappreciationofwhattheChurchhas doneforculture,letalonemen's salvation,toweredsohighattheend ofthatfirstlongvisitthatIhave feltachangeforthebetterinmy thinkingeversince.

Butonethingthatseemedtedious atfirstgraduallyopenednewmentalavenuestome.

IstartedtostudyItalianand SpanishbytheBerlitzmethod,and thoughIhadonlyabouta12-weeks' course,andthoughitwasbefuddling tokeeptwosuchcloselyalliedlanguagesseparatedwhentheywere studiedatthesametime,Ihave beenableeversincetomakeafair stabatreadingeitherone.

NOTASINGLEWORD OFENGLISHUSED

TheBerlitzmethodisunique.Not asinglewordofEnglishwasspoken inourlessons.Itcouldnotbe,for theSpanishteacher,aswellasthe Italianteacher,knewnothingabout English.Weheardandreadonlythe languagewewerestudying.

Ourreallyfineliteratureisfar ahead,inEnglish,ofanythingthat manyoftheancientCreeksor Romansproduced.Vergilwasnot equaltoShakespeare,andCaesar wasfarbehindHilaireBellooor

Thetextbookwasnotbig;andit hadnovocabularyatitsback.There was,ofcourse,atextbookforeach ofthelanguages.Thesebooksdiscussedthemostordinarythingsin life,andwehadtogetsomeknowledgeofthelanguageprontoorwe

couldneverhaveunderstoodthe teacher.Wehadsmallgrammarsin eachofthelanguages,andwe boughtsmalldictionariesatabook store.Theidea,however,wasto teachandlearnlanguagestheway achildlearnsone-byhearingit, bybeingforcedtospeakit,andby usingcommonsenseastoitsprobablemeaning.

Wedidnotmastereitherlanguage within12weeks,butwelearnedthat perserveranceandplainsweat,plus acopioususeofreadingandwriting,markthepaththatmustbefollowedinlearninganylanguage.

1wishthatsomelanguageexperts wouldgetbusyanddrawupaseries ofBerlizt-likebooksforuseinour Catholicschools.Exceptinthecase ofrealdumbbells,itoughttobe possibletogivestudentsaspeaking knowledgeofLatineveninthelatter gradesofourelementaryschools.I amsurethathighschoolstudents couldeasilybetaughtLatinconversation.IknowthatifIhadbeenable togiveanhouradayforsixto ninemonthstothestudyofSpanishandItalianbytheBerlitzmethod Iwouldhavebecomefluentinspeakingthem.

GOODLANGUAGE

NECESSARYTOTHOUGHT

LatinhelpsinthestudyofEnglish grammarandrhetoric,byitsmeticulousinsistenceonagreementof certainwords.ThecontrastsitofferstoEnglishgrammarhelpour memory.Weneedalltheaidwecan getinthestudyofEnglish,foronly aminorityreallymasterourgrammarandrhetoric.Englishisatough languagetoconquer.Wewoulddo betterwithitifweknewmore Latin.

Letusappreciatethefactthat, nomatterhowmuchlogicwehave studied,andnomatterhowmany wordsweknow,ourwritingisnot goodunlessitisclearandrightto thepoint.

Ifwecannotwriteclearly,wedo

notthinkclearly.Thepastgenerationsoftenweremoreintenton parading"style"thantheywereon presentingthought.Theypaidfar moreattentiontofiguresofspeech thantheydidtoclarity,logic,the rightuseofwords,theeasyflowof sentences.Figuresofspeechareall right,buttheyaremereinstruments ofthetrade,notitsessence.Itis farbettertohaveadecentvocabulary,andtobemeticulousabout thedefinitionofwords.Itisnecessarytokeepawayfromclichesand repetitioussoundsormeaningless fancyworkwithwords.

Peoplewhodonotmastertheir nativetonguerarelythinkstraight. Accuracyofexpression,whichrequiresavocabularyandrightgrammarandrhetoric,isessential.

Theimportanceoflinguisticstudy cannotbetoostronglystressed.We oughttoinsist,inourCatholic schools,onEnglishgrammarand literature,butweoughtalsotoinsistonLatin.Classicaleducationof thepastdemandedLatin.Aknowledgeofitwillhelpanybodyto achieveabetterknowledgeofEnglishgrammarandcomposition.It willalsohelpdevelophismemory.

CLASSICSNEEDNOT BEPASSEDUP

Letusputasidetheclassicsuntil thethirdorfourthyearofhigh school,whentheycanallberead withoutdifficulty,providedwehave givenagoodconversationalknowledgeofLatinintheearlieryears ofhighschool.Asforourcollege classes,letusmakesurethatstudentsknowconversationalLatinbeforetheygetintotranslatingthe classics.Todaymostpupilsare merelyplayingalongtheedgesof thelanguage.

IfstudentslearnLatin,theycan easilypickupvariousothermodernlanguages;theywillhaveto learnLatin,however,byamethod liketheBerlitzplan,forpeopleget aconversationalknowledgeoflanguageonlybythinkinginitand usingitinbothspeechandwriting.

Afterknowinghowtoconversein Latin,letthestudentssailthrough itsclassics.

Arealdifficultyarisesfrom

Nicaragua,whichhasa Catholicpopulationofabout onemillionpeople,hasonly eightseminarians,oronefor every125,000Catholics.The UnitedStateshasoneseminarianforevery3840Catholics andFrancehasoneforevery 4400Catholias.
