Throughouttheshow,polishedperformanceswerein abundance,provingagain thatyoungpeople,givendirectionandincentive,have thenecessarytalentinboth qualityandquantity.

WhatrankledmostwiththemajorityofPoles wastheanti-Churchcampaign.AnoverwhelmingmajorityofthepopulationareCatholics,and ahighpercentageofthemarepractisingCatholics.True,thepresentregimehasrestoredsome importantlibertiestotheChurch.Butthepeople knowthatitisstillacommunistregimeandthat allcommunismisbasedonatheisticprinciples.
Thefactthatcommunismhasbeenimposedon PolandbyRussiaisenoughtomakeitdistastefultotheaveragePole.
Apartfromthesereligiousandpatrioticconsiderations,theotherrealitiesofdailylifeunder communistrulehavebredastrongdislikefor communisminPoland.Theseharshrealitiescan begroupedunderthreemainheadings:
1.Government.
IntheheartofWarsawyouseeamassive seven-storybuildingerectedsincethewarwith publicmoney.ItistheheadquartersofthePZPR, thPolishUnitedWorkers'Party,whichisthe Communistparty.Itisfromthisbuilding,not fromanyGovernmentoffices,thatPolandhas beenruled.
Eleswhereinthecityyouseebuildingsbearingthenamesofgovernmentministriesand commissions.ThereisaPolishparliamentthe Sejm.Butallthesehavehadtotaketheirorders fromthepartyheadquarters.
Mr.Gomulka,theacknowledgedrulerof Polandatthemoment,holdsnogovernment post.Heissecretarygeneraloftheparty.The Premier,Mr.Cyrankiewicz,isapartymember butheissubordinatetoMr.Gomulkainthe partyandinactualpower.
Mr.Gomulkahasindeedpromisedachange. "Wemustcreatethenecessaryconditionsforthe parliamenttofulfillitsprimordialtaskofexercisingsupremelegislativeandcontrolling power,"hedeclaredlastOctober.Hedescribed theproperroleofthepartyas"guiding"and "directing"thegovernment.Buthemadeno allownaceforthepossibilitythatthepeople mightprefersomeotherpartytodotheguiding.

Underthecommuniststensofthousandsof PoleshaveservedprisontermsforallegedoffencesagainsttheState.TheU.B.,thesecret police,nowdisbandedweredetested,Mr.Gomulkahimself,aCommunistpartymembersince earlymanhood(heisnow52),wasarrestedin 1949andhelduntillastsummer.Hisbiography, givenmebyagovernmentoffice,nowdescribes thechargesagainsthimas"outrageousandunfounded."
'Tragicthingshavehappenedamongus,and innocentpersonshavebeencondemnedtodeath," hehimselfsaidpublicly,lastOctober."Many otherinnocentpersonshavebeenimprisoned, oftenforlongyears,andcommunistsamong them.Manyhavebeensubjectedtobrutaltorture."
ThePolishpeoplerememberthatthesethings happenedunderAlecommunistsystemandthat thesystemitselfprovide'snosafeguardorremedy.
