R.:TherearemanyindicationsthatnumbersofindividualChristianswould notcontinueinthepure teachingsofChristandof theApostles.
ThusSt.Peterspeaksof the"unlearnedandtheunstable"whowresttheScrip-. tures"totheirowndestruction"(IIPet.3:16).St.Paul speaksofsuchpeopleas havingmade"shipwreckof thefaith"(ITim.1:19).
Butthisdoesnotmean thattheChurchitselfwould failalso.Itcouldnot.Christ Himselfhadsaid:"Thegates ofhellshallnotprevail againstit"(Matt.16:18).In theveryEpistleinwhichSt. Paulspokeofpeoplemaking"shipwreckofthefaith" forthemselvespersonally, hewrotethatthe"Church ofthelivingGod"isthe "pillarandgroundoftruth" (ITim.,3:15).
St.Johnalsowrote:"We areofGod.HethatknowethGod,hearethus.He thatisnotofGod,heareth usnot.Bytthisweknow thespiritoftruth,andthe spiritoferror"(IJohn4:6).
Inotherwords,theinfallibleandauthoritative teachingoftheApostlesand oftheChurchfoundedupon themisthetestoftruth.
Andsoitwillbe,accordingtothepromiseofChrist, "allthedayseventillthe endoftheworld"(Matt. 28:20).
Q.,ITim.4:1-4,foretells thatsameshalldepart fromthefaith,andspecifieshow:"Forbiddingto marryandcommandingto abstainfrommeats."
R.:TheCatholicChurch doesnotforbidCatholicsto marry.Catholicmarriages, withherblessingupon them,areregularoccurrences.Youhavemisunderstoodthetext.St.Paul iscondemningthosewhc declaredallmarriageevil, forbiddingmarriagealtolgethser. Asforcommandingto abstainfrommeats,St. Paulwasreferringtothose whoweretryingtoenforce theJewishobservanceofthe distinctionbetweenthe cleananduncleanmeatsaccordingtotheOldLaw.
Thushewrotetothe Colossians:"Letnoman thereforejudgeyouinmeat orindrink"(Col.2:16).
TheCatholicChurchhas neveracknowledgedthat Jewishfoodlawsarestill binding.
Q.:TheCatholicChurchis theonlymajorChristian denominationtodaywhich forbidslargenumbersof itspeopletomarry, and commandsweeklyand seasonalfasts.
R.:TheCatholicChurch doesnotforbidlargenumbersofherpeopletomarry. Shecertainlyteachesthat thosewhowish,orwhofeel calledtoitbyGod,arefree tochoosenottomarry ratherthantomarry.
Thisisinaccordancewith theteachingofChristWho, whentheApostlessuggestedthatitwasnotexpedienttomarry,repliedthat notallwillchoosetorefrain frommarriage,butthoseto -whomitisgiventomake suchachoiceforthesake of"thekingdomofheaven" (Matt.,19:10-12).
SuchalsowastheteachingofSt.Paul.Hewasunmirried,andsaid."Iwould thatallwereevenasmyself; buteveryonehathhispropergiftfromGod."He wentontosaythatitwas goodtoremainunmarried, thatiswithoutawifeis solicitousforthethingsthat belongtotheLord, howhe maypleaseGod andthe unmarriedwomanandthe virginthinkethonthethings oftheLord, thatshemay beholybothinbodyandin spirit"(ICor.,7:7-8;32-34).
Themotive,ofcourse,isa spiritualone;or,asChrist said,forthesakeof"the kingdomofheaven."
Asfortheregularpracticesoffasting,theCatholic Churchissurelynottobe blamedforthusfulfilling Christ'sownpredictionconcerningHisfollowersthat, afterHisdeparturefrom thisworld,"thentheyshall fastinthosedays"(Mark 2:20).
WhenSt.Paulurgedthe Colossians:"Mortifythereforeyourmembers"(Col. 3:5),andsaidofhimself:"I chastisemybodyandbring itintosubjection"(ICor. 9,27),hewasspeakingof self-denial,oneformof whichisbyfasting.
Itisabsurdtoconfuse suchapracticeofChristian asceticismwiththeefforts tore-introducetheJewish distinctionbetweenclean anduncleanmeatswhichSt. Paulcondemned.

Theyarelikeacancerinthesocialbody.Ifthey aremerelycheckedatonepoint,theyimmediately threatenanotherpart.Onthebasisofevenpurely personalandselfishreasons,allAmericansshould beconcernedaboutanti-Catholicism.
Whyaren'tthey?Anti-Catholicismisatermrequiringsomeinterpretation.Itsobviousmeaning wouldbeprejudiceanddiscriminationtowardCatholicsonthebasisoftheirreligion.Suchattitudes andbehaviors,however,wouldviolatethetenetsof democracysoreputedlyandassiduouslypropagated bytheverypersonswhoattackCatholicism.Hence amodusvivendiisessential.
Againandagainwritersandspokesmenofthis typemaketwocarelessdistinctions.First,they claimtheyarenotopposedtoCatholicsatall,but rathertotheAmericanCatholichierarchyandsome ofthoseteachingsoftheCatholicChurchwithhave theirdirectimpactonsociallife.Second,theyalso claimthatsuchopposition,farfrombeingundemocratic,isbasedexclusivelyupontheirdesiretopreservedemocracyintheUnitedStates.
Onthebasisofsuchspeciouslogic,theseopponentsceasetobebigotsandbecomepatriots,atleast intheirownmindsandthemindsoftoomanyAmericans.Theabsurdityoftheirpositioncanbeclearly indicated.
WhenagreatdealofProtestantAmerica,under theleadershipofitsclergy,supportedandsucceeded inpassingtheprohibitionlaw,itwasconsidereda typicaldemonstrationofdemocracyinaction;the willofthemajorityhadprevailed.WhenCatholics incertainstates,inconformitywiththenaturallaw andtheteachingsoftheirChurch,vtitedagainst publicdisseminationofartificialcontraceptivein formation,itwasconsideredundemocratic,totalitarian,repressive,andtheresultofclericaldictatorship.
ThelegislationoftheCatholicChurchonmixed religiousmarriageisinvariablycitedasaviolation ofdemocraticprinciples.YetOrthodoxJewsabsolutelyforbidmixedreligiousmarriage.Nodispensationsarepossible-asinthecaseofCatholics. NoOrthodoxrabbiwouldperformsuchamarriage, andinthepastatleast, theserviceofthedeadwas readbyhisfamilyforasonwhomarriedanonJew.
WHYTHEUNMENTIONABILITY?
SomeofthesmallerProtestantsectsautomatically excommunicateamemberwhomarriesoutsidehis religion.SomeofthelargerProtestantdenominationshaverecentlydecriedmixedreligiousmarriages. Somehoworother,suchactionsonthepartofnonCatholicsareeithernotthoughtof,orcertainlynot cited,asundemocratic.Theyapparentlybecomeso onlywhentheCatholicChurchisinvolved.
Theveryessenceofdemocracyisextensionofthe samerightsandprivilegestoallAmericancitizens regardlessofrace, nationalorigin, orreligion.Under suchcircumstances,Protestantministersandliaty mayindeedopposethesaleofalcoholicbeverages, OrthodoxJewsmaylikewiseforbidmixedreligious marriage.
Quitelogicallyandrightfully,then,Catholicsmay opposepublicdisseminationofbirthcontrolinfotmatonandrequiredispensationsandprenuptialagreementsformixedreligiousmarriage.Thatis,of course,ifdemocraticprinciplesaretoprevail.
Herethenisthebasicreasonwhyanti-Catholicism theunmentionableprobleminAmericangroup relations.Toadmitexistence,exceptinthemost flagrantandviolentincidents,wouldupsetordestroythesmugnessofcertain"liberals"whoarethe outstandingantagonistsofCatholicism,andwhoat thesametimeconsiderthemselvesthegreatestbulwarkofdemocracyinAmericaexceptforthepublic school.
