hisreportatthebreak-upceremoniesatSt.Louis'Jesuit s ol,therector(TheV.Rev.J.Hawkins,S.J.)saidthatthe sodalitiespresentedtheboyswithwaysandmeansofbeingsomethingbetterthanan"ordinary"Catholicandcitizen.

Theytriedtoinspirethem toagenerousloveofOur LordandOurLady-to makeChristthecentreof theirlives.

Thatwasveryvaluable forhappinessandsalvation, saidFatherHawkins,but therewasmuchdistraction fromthatidealaroundthem andsomeboysseemedto preferthedistractiontothe principalthemeoflife.

Mostoftheboyshad voluntarilypledgedthemselvestoweeklyCommunionandtothedailydedicationoftheirlivestothe SacredHeart.Itwaspleasingtoseehowmanyof themwenttoConfessionin preparationforthemonthly firstFridayCommunion andhowmanyofthem valuedtheday-boys'Mass morethanplayingorchattingintheschoolyard.

Manyoftheboysshowed generosityandself-sacrifice intheiractivitiesforthe foreignmissions.Mission workwaswonderfultrainingforboysinunselfishness.

EgotismDangerous

Thatwasnotacharacteristicofyoungpeopleand notenougheffortwasmade toteachthemtobeconsiderateandtohelpothers.

Selfishness,saidFather Hawkens,wasreallya dangerousthing-ithad manytroublesomeand tragicmanifestations,rangingfromsimpledisputes todivorce,frompushing othersasideinaqueueto cripplingandkillingthem onthehighways.

Closelylinkedwithstudy wasthelibrary.Parents woulddotheirchildrena wonderfulservice'ifthey gotthemtodosomeintelligentreadingtoreplace someofthelong,longhours wastedunhealthily,mentallyandmorally,onthe beachesandatfilms.

ParentalLaxity

Onthepointoftheconductofboysoutofschool, FatHawkinssaidhehad beenworried,praticularly byboysintheirearlyteens 13-16.

Hehadbeenappalledatthelibertiesallowedmany ofthoseyoungsters-or takenbythemwithimpunity-intheirassociations,recreationsandexpensivetastesandhabits.

Hedeploredtheweakness shownbysomeboysin apingthefashionsandfoolhardinessofthosewhohad lessloftyidealstosteer them.

Otherpointscoveredin therector'sreportincluded: PublicExaminationresults.IntheLeaving16 passed,threefailed,23 gotdistinctions.Inthe Junior,26passedfully,five partially,fivefailed.

Theschool'senrolment exceeded320-maximum capacity.

Insport,ajuniorteam wonanathleticcontest againstfourpublicschools.

DesmondHoarewasthe firstrepresentativeofthe schoolinaStatecricket team.

Interestindebatingwas disappointing.Therewasa sickeningtendencydevelopingamongstboystositback

passivelyandscoffand sneeratthosewhotriedto dosomethingpositiveand practical.

Youngpeopleoftenchose theuselessandtheharmful nowadays,andneglected thetruegood.Allhuman choiceanddecisionismotivatedbywhatisgood-the willcannotchooseanything unlessitseesitasgood- eithercorrectlyormistakenly.

Itwasuptoadultstodistinguishforyouththetrue goodfromthemistaken good-toidentifythetrue goodforthem-tospotlightitforthem-toexemplifyitfortheminthemselves. Theladies'committee raised£1,300duringthe yearforthebuildingofa schoolchapel.

£1,260wasraisedbythe ovalcommitteeforthenew ovalsincelastAugust.

Afterall,youparentsare theprincipalteachersof yourboys;theschoolcan onlyhopetocomplement thetrainingyougiveyour boysathome.Youlaythe foundationsandbuildon themforseveralyearsbeforetheboycomestoschool andaftertheyhavebegun schoolingyouhavethemin thefamilycircleforthe greaterpartofthetimecertainlyinthecaseofdayboys.

TrainingElements

Theremustthereforebe complementarytrainingin thehomeandintheschool. Ifyourboyisnotshowingallthesignsofscholarship orofsterlingcharacterthat youhadhoped,itmightbe wisetoexaminetheconscienceofthehomebefore youexaminetheconscience oftheschool.

Conversely,Ifeelthatthe mastersherewouldnot arrogatetothemselvesall thecreditforthemanyboys whoareacredittothe schoolandtotheirhomes.

InthisbusinessofeducatingboysthereareIthink threemainelements:their scholasticteaching,theirreligiousinstructionandpracticeandtheircharacter training.

Charactertraining is muchmoreimportantthan tuitioninscholasticsubjects, otherwiseweareeducating foralivelihoodratherthan forlife..'Anditishere thatthehomecancontributesomuch,indeedmore thancantheschool.

ThiseveningIproposeto sayafewwordsononeaspectofcharactertraining.

Fundamentally,weinthe schoolsandyouparentsin thehomearetryingtopreparetheboysforfutureindependenceandfreedom.so thatprogressivelyasthey growuptheywillhaveless andlessneedofus.

Nowtrainingyouthfor freedomandindependence

isadelicateanddifficult matterandsuccess,Isuggest,willbeattainedby avoidingtwoextremes.

Thefirstextremeisconstantrepression.Itis humorouslycaricaturedin thecartoonwheremother callstheeldersisterand says"FindoutwhatJohnny isdoingandstophim."

Ofcourse,withconstant repressionnogrowthispossible.Constantrepression leadstoconstantstuntingor toexplosion.Childrenwant togrowup;theydonot wanttobekeptattheinfantilelevel.

Thesecondextremeisallowingthechildtodopretty wellwhatitlikes,pamperingitsso-calledneedfor "selfexpression."Thisis equallyharmful,foritgives theboymorefreedomthan heisabletohandleatan immatureage.Itislikeallowingachildtodrivea high-poweredcarbeforehe isoldenoughtocontrolit.

Lettingtheboydolargely whathelikesisnottraining, butarefusaltotrain,so thatwhenfreedomfrom home-tiescomesheisincapableofmakingagbod useofit.

Itisabadpreparationof thepre-schoolchild,since thespoiledchildwillreceive nomercyfromhisfellows whenhestartsschool.It isabadpreparationofthe schoolboytofacetheworld later,fortherehewillfind inevitablythatthereare manyrestrictionsonhis whimsandcaprice.

GradualSlackening

Ifheisnottrainedto counterthesebyasenseof dutyatschoolandathome heisheadingforfuture disaster.

Themiddlecourseisthe desirableone,namelya gradualslackening ofparentalcontrol-alittle atatime-allthroughthe yearsuntilbyadolesenceft isconsiderablylassnoticeable. Ifthechildrenhavehad insuccessivestages,allthe freedomtheycouldPROPERLYuse(andwithout havingtofightforit),both theyandtheirparentsare betterpreparedforthe periodtfrapidexpansion inadolescence.

AlthoughIhadnotlivedinthecountrythenumber ofyearsrequiredbythelawfornaturalisation,neverthelessoninformationfurnishedtotheSecretaryof StateinLondoninmyregard,bytheGovernor,I wasmadebyhimwithoutdelayanaturalisedEnglishman.Thishonourwascommunicatedtomeby theSecretaryofStatefortheColony,SirR.R. ThefactthatIhadbefriendedhim,thoughoflittle consequenceinitself,madethemlookonmewith morerespectthateverastheirbenefactorand protector.Ithinkitwelltoremarkherethatther nativeshadbeenfoundguiltyandputinprisonfor havingononeoccasionstolenseventeensheepfrom theshepherdsinourvicinity.Nowalthoughthese

TheriseofNazismin Germany,FascisminItaly andtheformationofantiCatholicGovernmentsin othercountries,awokethe Churchtoadangerpeculiar tothistime.Suchgovernments,althoughpopularly electedinthefirstplace, werecomposedofmenhostiletoreligionorindifferent toitandallowingthosehostiletoittoattackthe Church.

PopePiusXIIwasquotXII(thenCardinalParelli) inghisprecedecessor,Pope1PiusXI.Surelynotwo menwerebetterqualified tospeakofthesituationof theChurchinmoderntimes andtheybothstressedthat thechallengetotheChurch wasuniqueinitslonghistory.

Theywerecognisantof thefact Churchthattheearly survivedfourcenturiesofthebitterestper-secutionintheRomancatacombs;theyknewthatit wasover-runbypagan hordesandthattheArian heresytoreitasunderand almostdismemberedthe bodyoftheChurch,yet thesePopesofourtimesaid thatneverbeforehadthe Churchbeensoendangered asitwasatpresent.Pope PiusXIIhadrepeatedtheassertionmanytimes.

Suchtortureisincredible.Butitistrue.The torturesofCommunism,however,havebeentortures ofthemindmorethanofthebody.Buttheyareno lessdiabolical.

Thecurtainsofbambooandironmakeitvirtually impossibletogetmorethanafragmentarypicture oftruelifeundertotalitarianCommunism,particu- larlyofthe60millionmembersoftheSilentChurch. Butwhatglimpsesareavailableadduptothis:

InnorthernVietnamthereisopenseasononthe Church.Hundredsofpriestsandlaityinthisarea thatwasabastionoftheChurchinsouth-eastAsia arerottingingaols.TheRedsdelightindesecrating churchesandtabernacles,andtheCatholicsare forcedtoattendblasphemouslecturesmockingtheir mostcherishedbeliefs.

Some633,000CatholicshavefledfromtheRedrule, butmanywhoremainhavedaredshowtheirresistancetothegodlessmaster.TheCommunistGovernmentitselfadmittedinearlyNovemberthatCatholic villagerswererevoltinginNghsAnprovince.The rebellionwasshort-lived,however,andtheRedradio commentedthatwhenGovernmenttroopsmovedin toquellit,"anumberofpersonswerekilledor wounded."

OnlyHopeIsMiracleWroughtByPrayer

ThesituationinChinaislittlebrighter.The6,000 CathAjfmissionariesfromabroadwhooncelaboured thereiRavealmostallbeenexpelledorhavedied. Sevenforeignmissionaries-fiveAmericansandtwo Koreans-arestillinRedChineseprisons,andfive otherforeignmissionarypriestsarestillfreeCommunist-style.AsmallgroupofSistersisfree toconductaschoolforchildrenofforeigndiplomatic officialsinthecapitalatPeking.

Ofthenativeclergy,about600areunderarrest. theother1,400carryingon"underseverelyrestricted conditions."TheheroicOrdinaryofShanghai,Bishop IgnatiusKung,wasarrestedwithhundredsofhis priestsandfaithfulinSeptemberof1955,andstill languishesingaol.SomenativeBishopsandpriests whohavebeenimprisonedhavenotbeenheardfrom bytheirflocksforyears.

FatherHaroldRigney,DivineWordmissionarywho wasinaCommunistgaolforfiveyears,holdsthat theonlyhopeforthe3,500,000Catholicsand500,000 ProtestantsofChinaisamiraclewroughtbyprayer tosave"thesenoblepeoplefromthewickedChinese Communists."

IntheSovietUnion,thepicturesomewhatvaries, fromafalsefacadeofreligious"freedom"forsome subjugatedpeoplestothegrimrepetitionof"the horribleandcriminalsacrilegeswhicharerepeated andincreasedeverydayagainstGodandthesouls oftheinnumerblepopulation"whichPopePiusXI prptestedagainstmorethanaquarter-centuryago.

Butthesignsarethattheageofbrutalpersecution ofreligionisbeingabandonedasimpractical.The Kremlinknowsthatmillions,evenamongtheyoung. aresteadfastChristiansdespitenearly40yearsofsuch persecution.

TheoldRussianEmpirecountedsome3,300 Catholicchurches.Today,asfarasisknown,there areonlyfourchurchesinalloftheSovietUnionoutsideLithuaniaandLatvia.TheseareinMoscow, Leningrad,OdessaandTbilisi.

ItisintheCommunistStatesofcentralandsoutheasternEuropethatthestatusoftheChurchhas changedthemostin1956.InAlbania,Bulgariaand Rumania,theChurch,neverstrong,hasbeenvirtually liquidated.

ThelastmemberoftheAlbanianhierarchy,BishopBernardineShlakuofPulati,diedinearlyNovember.

ItwasconfirmedattheVaticanjustbeforethe AdventbeganthatthelastfreebishopinBulgaria, BishopCyrilKurteff,ApostolicExarchforBulgarian CatholicsoftheByzantineRite,hadbeenarrestedin Sofia.WhentheBishopwasexpelledfromhisresidencein1952,itwasreportedthathewasarrested.

Thefactis,however,thathemadehisquartersin asmallroominthebasementoftheSofiacathedral. andlivedthereuntilhisrecentarrest.Ofthe127 priestsand200ReligiousinBulgariabeforetheIron Curtainfell,onlyahandfularestillfree.TheChurch whichoncetotalled57,500faithful,isdecimated.

InRumania,theoldstrongholdoftheCatholic ChurchintheBalkans,onlytwobishopsarefreetoc13 limitedworkamongthecountry's11Sees. Reportsofunrestrecentlyindicatedthatasinthe othersatellites,thepopulation'sseethinghatred againsttheCommunistoppressorisincreasing.But theblackoutonnewsoftheChurchisvirtually completeone.

InYugoslavia,thehandofthedictatorTitoweighs nolessheavilyonthepeople.Thesymbol'ofthe persecutionoftheChurchisthePrimateofCroatia, HisEminenceAloysiusCardinalStepinac,nowinhis 11thyearofbeingbarredfromhisecclesiastical duties.ArrestedinSeptember,1946,theCardinal- Archbishopwasdulyconvictedandsentencedunder Communistjustice,butwasreleasedandconfinedto histinynativevillageofKrasicfiveyearsago.There heremains.

HowEasternEuropeStands

Inthepastyear,thearrestofpriestsforsuchanti- StateactivitiesasreferringtoSt.Josephas"the patronoftheworkers"hasbeensteppedup.In August,theRedregimeorderedtheCatholicseminaryatSplitclosedforaneight-yearperiod,leaving onlyfourseminaries-allunderclosesurveillanceinthewholecountry.

InthecaseofHungary,thesituationoftheChurch priortothepeople'sfightforfreedomappearedone ofimprovement.Evenbeforetheousterofthe StalinistCommunistboss,MatyasRakosi,inmidsummer,theRedshadgrantedmorefreedomtothe Church.

ArchbishopJoszefGroeszofKalosca,whohadbeen imprisonedin1951,wasreleasedandallowedto returntohispost-thefirstOrdinarybehindtheIronCurtainactuallypermittedtoresumehisChurch duties.Anumberofpriestswerefreedfromgaol. andtherewereevenpleasfromavowedCommunist, thatthepropagandists'"oldemptycommonplaces againstreligion"bedroppedandthattheregimeenter intogenuinediscussionwiththeChurches.

InthechaoticstatewhichhasfollowedtheSoviet bloodbathagainstthepopularrebellion,thestatusof theChurchisinthebalance.HisEminenceJoszef CardinalMindszenty,thePrincePrimate,isonthefree soiloftheU.S.LegationinBudapest,butunableto communicatewithhisflock.Nonetheless,theBishops andtheirpeople-constitutingtwo-thirdsofthe population-seemtohavemorereligiousfreedomthan theyhadayearago.

CzechoslovakiahasremainedastrongholdoforthodoxCommunismdespiteitsproximitytothevaliant HungariansandtriumphantPoles.Thespiritual leaderoftheCzechsandSlovaks,ArchbishopJosef BeranofPrague,hasbeeninternedsinceJuneof 1949,andthereisnosignthattheRedsplantoset himfree.

TenmillionoutofCzechoslovakia'spopulationof 14millionareCatholicsbut,asistheCommunist norm,thereisnofreeCatholicpressandCatholic educationissuppressed.However,unlikethesituationafewyearsago,Sistersnowventureontothe streets.ThepeoplecrowdtheirchurchesforMassevenonweek-dayfeasts.ButtheonlyfreeBishops *ereforcedtotakeanoathofallegiancetotheCom-

munistregimein1951,andeventheyareunder constantsurveillance.

TheChurchintheSovietZoneofGermanyhas beensubjectedtoincreasingpressuresfromthe Communistregime.TheRedshavesteppeduptheir campaigntoreplacethesacramentofConfirmation withpaganinitiationritesglorifyingtheCommunist State.Lastspring,shortlyaftertheBishopsofEast GermanyhadjoinedtheirbrothersoftheFederal Republicinajointpastoralletterwarningofthe "monstrousdanger"ofatheisticmaterialism,theReds inBerlinmadenewmovesagainstreligiousinstruction.Theybannedallreligiousteachinginthehigh schools,andmadeitvirtuallyimpossibleforelementaryschoolchildrentoattendreligionclasses.

PolesAppearToHaveGained

ThebrightspotintheoldStalinistempireis Poland.WiththenationalistrevoltinOctoberthat broughtWladyslawGomulkatothehelmofthe PolishCommunisthierarchy,aseemingly,genuine thawsetin.ThegroundworkwaslaidonAugust 26,whenatleastamillionPolesjourneyedtotheir nationalshrinetoOurLadyinCzestochowaina spontaneousdemonstrationoftheirfaithafterten yearsofMarxistrepression.Some160,000persons receivedHolyCommunion.Whethersymptom,or cause,theGovernmentrulingthenationwhosepopulationis90percent.Catholicwasinforradical changeswithintwomonths.

HisEminenceStefanCardinalWyszynski,ArchbishopofGnieznoandWarsawandPrimateofPoland, wasreleasedafterthreeyears'imprisonment.The Governmenthasagreedtorestorereligiousinstruction intheschools.AtleastthreeCatholicpublication; arebeingrestoredtotheChurch.TheCardinalPrimatehasvirtuallyafreehandinthefillingof Churchposts.

Inshort,theChurchappearstohavegainedmore freedomthanshehashadsincetheCommuniststook over. CommunistpartyfirstsecretaryGomulkaisan oldlineRed.ButunderhimthePolishpresshas shownfreedomithasn'tknowninadecade,or perhapsevenbeforeWorldWarII.Itissaidthat thecollectivefarmsarebeingbrokenup,withthe peasantstakingoverasprivateowners.

TherestillexistCommunistlawsfosteringdivorce andabortionandothersinimicaltoChristanmorality.

Warsaw,Dec.10.-Thenewcommunist regimeinPolandhasguaranteedfullreligiousfreedomandexpresseditswillingness toremoveallobstacleserectedagainstthe Churchinrecentyears.

Atthesametime,Poland'sCatholicBishopshave declaredthattheyarewillingtoco-operateinthe reconstructionofthecountry'spoliticallife,presumingthat"asaconsequenceofchangesinpubliclife," rightisobserved,justicegranted,themoralityofthe peopleraised,andrestitutionmadetotheChurchfor damages.

Inacommuniqueissuedbythejointcommission appointedbytheGovernmentofCommunistleader WladyslawGomulkaandbythehierarchy,itwas revealedthatreligiouseducationwouldberestored totheschools,andthattheregimewouldabandon interfereiceinChurchappointments.

RepresentativesofthePolishepiscopateconfirmed thatChurchandStateauthoritieswouldbegivenfull supportinfulfillingtheirtasksundertheconditions ofthenewagreementbyboththehierarchyandthe clergy.

Thesixpointcommuniqueprovides:

I.TobringaboutgoodrelationsbetweentheState antitheChurch,thecommissionwillproposeabolition bytheGovernmentofChurchLaw9.ofFebruary 9,1053,whichprovidesforGovernmentintrusionin thefillingofecclesiasticalposts.Anewagreement tobeformulatedwillassuretheGovernmentsome limitqdinfluenceconcerningtheappointmentofarchbishofasanddiocesanbishops,deansandprovosts (assistantdeans).Therightofecclesiasticaljurisdictionmustnotbeinfringedon.

2.Thefollowingprinciplesareacceptedtosolvethe problemofreligiousinstruction:

Voluntaryreligiousinstructionisguaranteedin elementaryand"middle"schoolsforchildrenwhose parentsdesireit.

Whilereligiousinstructionisnotanobligatory subjectintheschools,schoolofficialsareobligedto makeitpossibleandmustworkoutspecifictime schedules.

ReligionteachersaretobeproposedbytheChurch, appointedbytheschoolauthorities,andpaidbythe State.

Theprogrammeofinstructionandthenecessary booksaretobeagreeduponbybothauthorities.

Participationofthechildrenmustbeorganisedby theChurchwiththesupportofschoolauthorities. Bothsidesguaranteefulllibertyandtolerancefor believersaswellasfornon-believers.Bothwill opposeallattemptsagainstfreedomofconscience.

3.Agreementwasreachedconcerningreligious assistanceinhospitalsandhomesfortheaged.

4.Thepositionofprisonchaplainsandreligious assistanceinprisonswaslikewiseagreedon.

5.TheGovernmentagreedtothereturnofSisters removedin1953fromtheformerGerman-heldareas ofwesternPoland.IftheyarenotPoles,theyare freetoleavethecountryiftheychoose.Moreover, priestsremovedlastyearfromparishesintheformer Germanterritoriesarenowallowedtoreturntotheir parishes.

6.ThefiveordinariesnamedtoheadtheSeeswhich wereformerlyunderGermanadministrationare allowedtoassumetheirposts.

Someoftheseclauses-inparticular,thoseconcerningthe1953Churchappointmentsdecree,thereturn ofpriestsandSisterstotheoldGermanterritories, andtheaccordonthefivewesternordinaries-had apparentlygoneintoeffectpriortothecommunique announcingtheaccord.

Accordingtoinformedsourceshere,thejoint Church-StatecommissionispreparingfurtherstatementsconcerningotherfacetsofPolishlife.These sourcessaidnothingspecificwasmentionedabout freedomforCatholicorganisationsdespitethefact thattherehavebeennegotiationsonthesubject.

ItwasunderstoodthatthePolishGovernment viewsthetopicasespeciallydifficultunderthe presentcircumstances.

DuringtheStalinistera,theCatholicwelfare organisation,Caritas,andsimilargroupsweresuppressedandCommunist-frontgroupsraisedintheir stead.

Mr.Gomulkahasstatedexplicitlythattherecan benoCatholicpoliticalparty,anditisbelievedthat someagreementisbeingsoughtwherebyCatholic organisationswillbeallowedtofunctionwithassurancesthattheywillnotenterthepoliticalarena.

Inthecrisisofthe"Gomulkarevolutioh,"inwhich thisnationwasontheverge ofabloodyrevoltagainst theSovietUnion,churchmenandpoliticiansappearedtacitlyandtemporarily toforgettheirreconcilable conflictbetweenChristianity andMarxianCommunism.

Itmaybethattheregime isPolishfirstandCommunisticsecond.Butthereis thepossibilitythattheRect, intheirefforttoachieve nationalunityandwinthe goodwillofCatholicswho comprise95percent.ofthe population,willmakethe promiseoffreedomofreligiouseducationintheState schoolseffectiveonlyat first.Theymayleavethe wayopentorenderitmore difficultandirritatingin themoredistantfuture.

Intheirdiscussionsin thejointcommission,the objectiveoftheGovernment officialswastopersuadethe Catholichierarchytohelp bringabouttheappointment ofPolishbishopstothefive Seesinthe"westernlands."

GermanProblems

These"westernlands"are apoliticalsorespot,anda finalsolutiontotheprob- lemsofChurchadministrationtherewouldgratifythePolishGovernment.

Theselands,formerlythe provincesofPomeraniaand Silesia,weretakenfrom Germanyattheendof WorldWarIItocompensatePolandforthelossof UkrainianandWhiteRussianprovincesonher easternterritoriestaken overbyRussia.

Thisvasttransferof peoplesleftlegalandadministrativeproblemsinthe diocesesofwesternPoland thathaveplaguedthe ChurchandtheGovernment eversince,particularlybecauseofthehostileattitude ofthePolishCommunists totheChurch.

Otherproblemsbefore thejointcommissionwere consideredoflesserimportance,andmoreeasily

solublethantheproblems ofreligiouseducationand theadministrationofthe westernPolishSees.

Aspartofitscontribution tothebetterclimateof und6rstandingbetween ChurchandState,theGomulkaGovernmenthasper- mittedthePAXgroup-the old"progressiveCatholic" organisationwhichhasbeen house-brokeninRedfashion duringtheStalinistdaystofallintopublicdisrepute throughafewwell-placed andinspirednewspaper articles.

PAXissomethinghard toexplain.Forallpracticalpurposes,itcouldbe termedaCommunist-front organisationmadeupof ostensibleCatholics,includingItsordainedpriests.

Ingredients:

1ailliken,Ipt.ofwhite stock, ozs.ofbutter,1 tablespoonfulofcurrypowder, 1 dessertspoonful flour, 1 dessertspoonfulof shreddedcoconut,1dessertspoonfulchutney,tablespoonlsmon-juice,2tablespoonsofcreamortopof themilk,1apple,1onion, salt,cookedrice.

Method: Dividethechickeninto neatjointsandfrythem lightlyinhotbutter.Removethemfromthestewpan,putintheonionwith theflour,frylightly,add curry-powder,stiralltogetherandcookforafew minutes.Thenpourinthe stockgraduallyandstir untilboiling.

ThetranquillityofreligiouslifehasbeenmildlydisturbedatSt. Brigid'sConventofMercy,WestPerth,inrecentweeks.Crowds ofwell-wishershavearrivedtocongratulatefourmembersofthe communitywhocelebratedtheirgoldenjubileetogetheronDec.8, thefeastofOurLady'sImmaculateConception.

The jubilariansare MotherM.Augustine,Sr. M.Columba,Sr.M.Aloysius,andSr.M.Benedict. AllwereborninAustralia -thefirstthreeinVictoria, thelast-namedinNew SouthWales.

Thejubileecelebrations wereusheredinwithaconcertintheparishhallon theeveningofDec.7.This wasorganisedbyex-scholars-principallyunderthe directionofformerwellknownpianistDoreenSheridan. Someitemswerecontributedbychildrenattending theschoolatpresent.A memberoftheCommunity wasactivebehindthescenes lasproducerandstagemanager;shealsowrotethe scriptforacharmingtableauentitled"Vistaofthe Years,"depictingthevariousphasesinthepreparationofanunforreligious profession.

Thenarrationforthis piece-thetourdeforce ofthewholeprogrammewasbeautifullyspokenby MyrtleHansen.

Sydney,Dec.13:Australia'sfirstnative-foundedcongregationofreligiouswomen,theSisters oftheGoodShepherdof theOrderofSt.Benedict, willcelebratetheir100th anniversaryearlyin1957.

Theinstitutewasfoundedin1857bythefirstArchbishopofSydney.theMost Rev.rendJohnBedePolding,O.S.B.,andthecentenarywilloccuronFebruary2.

Onehundredyearsago therewasaneedforareligiouscongregationwhich, whileconformingtothe oldertraditionsofmonasticism,wouldbeflexible andcapableofadaptation toanewandgrowingcountry.

Itwaswiththeseaimsin viewthatArchbishopPoldingorganisedthefirstgroup ofSistersoftheGoodShep- herd.Fromaninitialmembershipoffive,thecongregationhasgrownto.700 members.

AlthoughtheSociety's primaryworkismissionary, timesandcircumstances havedrawnherintoeducationalactivities.Likeany otherorderintheChurch, sheneedsmoreandmore memberstohelpintheharvest.Theyearsoftraining affordedbytheSocietyare long.But,giventhebackgroundofgoodhealthand normalintellectualability, shehelpstheyoungAus- traliantodevelophisnaturaltalentsforspecialised work,ortofurthertheattainmentsacquiredbefore entering.

LastJulysawthefourth centenaryofthedeathof theFounderoftheSociety, St.Ignatius.Itisindeed fittingthatCardinalGilroy in1957shouldordainthe 100thJesuit,asitwasback in1944heordainedthe first.

Amongthegroupwere twobrothers,Stefanand Gabor,whohadbeenfreedomfightersinBudapest andeachhadoneRussian tanktohiscredit.

Accordingtothereportof anunnowinVienna,there aremanyothercaseslike thesetwo.

Whentheconventofthe nuns,locatedintheBrno Diocese,wasclosedin1947, thenunsweregivenadifficultchoice.Theofficials toldthemthattheycould continuetoweartheirreligioushabitsandgotoa forcedlabourcamporremainfreeiftheyagreednot toweartheirhabits.

Themovefollowedaprotestconveyedtogovernment officialsinthenameofthe CatholicsofCeylonbyArchbishopThomasB.Cooray, 0.M.I.,ofColombo,against publicationofaBuddhist author'sbookwhichwas viewedbytheCatholic communityasaslanderous attackontheBlessedVirgin. Cologne,Germany,Dec.14.-Automationmeansprogress,delegatestotheconventionoftheInternationalConfederation ofChristianTradeUnionsnotedintheir closingresolution.

But,theresolutionadded,automation-theuseof automaticequipmentto operateandcontrolother machines-mustserveall menandcontributetosocial development.

Itisthereforethevital concernofeveryChristian worker,theresolutioncontinued,tostudytheproblemswhichwillarisewith thegradualadoptionof automationtomakesure thatprogressoftheproper typetakesplace.

Thecommitteesetupby theconfederationtostudytheinternationalaspectsof automation,itwasannounced,willkeepmember unionsinformedoftechnital progressindifferentcoun-

triesandreportonproblems beforetheybecomesoseriousthatajustsolutionis impossible.

Theconfederationpassed itsresolutionafterhearing anaddressbyHisEminence JosefCardinalFrings,ArchbishopofCologne.

"Iaminfavourofauto mation,"theCardinalsaid. "Butautomationbringswith itcertainresponsibilities whichworkersmustnotignore."

CardinalFringsadded thatChristiantradeunions muststudytheimpactof technicalprogressonthe wholelifeoftheworker andbereadytosuggest solutionstotheproblems thatautomationwillcreate.
