TheSistersexpressed gratitudetotheLotteries Commissionforthegrant of£3,000whichmadepossibletheextensionsand renovationoftheHospice.

Mr.A.Poweristhecontractorfortheentirework, whichcomprisesthebuildingofanewablutionblock theinstallationofnewceilings,sandingandpolishing offloorsandrepairstothe portionusedasachapel.

Mr.JackCochranehad beenresponsibleforpaintingthehouseandMr.Barretthassuppliedthesoft furnishings.

Aoonasthedebton theopertyhasbeen tdischargedtheDaughtersof Charityplantobuildahospitalwhichwillcaterfor theincurableandforaged menandwomen.

TheSisterinchargesaid thatwhenthenunstook overthepropertyfromMr. CarlSchuller,suchwashis loveforthelandthatthe propertywasinperfectcondition.Thehouseishemmed inwithbeautifulshrubs andsome120rosebushes.

Asmallorchardcontains mostvaritiesoffruit.

TheSistersaimtomake thepropertyself-supporting.Alreadyastarthas beenmadewithavegetable garden,acowandsome bee-hives.

LeonardClarkisanoted explorer;heisalsoaborn story-teller,andthisaccount ofhisdiscoveriesalongthe upperreachesoftheAmazonlookslikebecominga classicinthisfieldofliterature.

TheDrumsGoBang

Thisisareallydelightfulautobiographyoftwo successfulnovelistswhoare husbandandwife. Theirfirstmeetingwas carefullyarrangedbySister MaryPrudence(representingRuth)andSisterMary Fidelis(representingthat up-and-comingliterary geniusD'ArcyNiland, knowntohisfamilyas "DiggerEvans").

SisterMaryFidelisfelt thatallherprotegeneeded wassomeone"professional" togivehimahand.Sister Prudenceknewthatherexpupilworkedonthe"AucklandStar,"andwasthereforeprobablymanagingeditor.(Asamatteroffact shewas proof-reader's assistant,andthebudding romancealmostfoundered atitsinception.)

Whenthetwogoodnuns foundthattheliterarycontacttheyhadarrangedwas developingintoaromance theywerebothvaguely alarmed,forneitherof themfeltsurethattheother nun'schoiceofliterary helpercouldpossiblybe goodenoughforherpoor deargirl/boy.

Despitetheprayersof theirmentorsthetwoembryowritersdidmarry,and thisisthestoryoftheir firstfiveyearstogether,of theirstrugglestoselltheir stories,oftheirdesperate searchforaccommodation, andoftheirfinaldualsuccesswhen"thedrumswent bang."

Asyoufollowthem throughtheirlifeinSydney'sSurryHillsandout westontheshearingrun youcanseehowtheymanagedtowritetwobestsell-

Hereisanexcellentpresentforthosewholiketo combinethepleasurable withtheeducational.Itis justwhatitsays,ahistory bookpackedwithinformation-mostofitinpictures. Theletterpressisreduced toaminimum,andthepicturesareextremelywell done.

Theprecis-likequality hasattimesresultedin someinaccuracies,at timesirritatingandat othersamusing.Anexample oftheformeristhebald statementthatGalileowas denouncedasahereticbecausehesaidtheearthrevolvedaroundthesun.On theamusingsideisthe statementthattheAustraliancolonywasfoundedby emigrantsin1788among whom"wereconvictswho hadbeendeportedfortrivial crimes."Suchdiplomatic treatmentofouringlorious beginningsisinthebest Britishtradition.

Amongthechildren's booksforChristmasItryto includenotonlythebestof theencyclopaediasandthe latestreadingmatterbut alsooneofthemodernclassics,andthistimeIhave chosentheloveliestofall dogstories.

ThestoryofLassiehas beenthesubjectofafilm, ofaradioplay,and,currently,atelevisionserialin theEasternStates,butthe bookstillseemstomethe bestmediumofall,andit isastorywhichnoboyor girlof12upwardsshould missreading.

Itissomethingmorethan thestoryofadog'slovefor aboy;itisasuperblywrittenstudyofthehabits andinstinctsofacolliedog. Onlyaloverofcollies,and onewhohadstudiedthem foryears,couldhavewrittensuchanenthrallingbook withoutcommittingsome errorofsentimentalityor exaggeration.

Iamrecommendingthis fortheyoungerreaders eventhoughIrealiseitwill probablynotreachthemtill fatherandmotherhaveread it,butafterallitisniceto buysomethingforjunior thatthegrown-upchildren canenjoytoo.

Thedifficultyisthatitis impossibleforanyofusto answerthatquestionwith adefinite:"No,Iwouldnot." Thinkingthatistheright answerwejustfeelguilty andhopeless.Itisthe saintswhogiveusback ourhope.Theytellusitis presumptuousanddangerousforustosaywewould notactimmorallyifgiven thechance.Theywarnus aboutbridgingourspiritual riversbeforewecometo them,andaremostinsistent thatwelookaheadonlyto takemeasurestoavoidpossiblechancesoroccasionsof sin-nevertodaretoindulgeinpromisesofhow wewillemergevictorious. Theblunderingsofwellmeaningpeoplewhenthey talkabouttheevilofsin arebecomingquitecommon. Theytellus,forexample, thingslikethis:"Youshould bepreparedtodie,evento permitthegreatestimaginableevils,forexample,a

world-wideatomicwar, ratherthancommitthe slightestsin,suchasthe tellingofadeliberatevenial lie."

Nowthatofcourse,is true;theendneverjustifiesthemeans;andsin,any kindofsin,isthegreatest evil.Theintentioninmakingsuchstatementsisto stressthat.Thetroubleis thatitisimpossibleforus sinnerstobecoldlyimpersonalaboutsuchthings; especiallyasweknowhow wetendtotellliestoavoid evenlittleinconveniences.
