ItwasaboutthistimethatDr.Ozanam,Frederic's fatherdecidedthatFredericmustbeginstudying foraprofession.Hisinclinationslaytowardsaliterarycareer,buthisfatherwishedhimtodolaw.So theautumnof1831foundFredericOzanamenrolled asalawstudentintheUniversityofParis.
FredericwasfarfromhappyinParis,"thecapital ofegotism,"ashetermedit.Hewashomesick,his surroundingswerenotthebestandhislegalcompanionslivedontheothersideofthecity.However, anew-foundfriendinthegreatscientist,AndreMarieAmpere,helpedFredericoverthisdifficult period.

AConferenceofHistorywasformedsoonafterthis, inwhichOzanamandhiscompanionsdefendedCatholicismagainsttheattacksofnumerousyoung philosophersoftheperiod.Itworkedquitewell, buttheseyoungphilosophicalextremistswantedmore thantherecordoftheCatholicChurchinpastages. Ozanamtookupthechallenge,realisingthatwhat waslackingintheirconferencewasthespiritof charity.HerecalledthewordsofSt.Paul,"Faith withoutworksisdead."SoinMay1833,theSociety ofSt.VincentdePaulwasfoundedwithamembershipofseven.MonsieurI3ailly,amanofaboutforty andajournalist-printerbyprofession,waselected thefirstpresident.

Thoughnevertryingtopushhimselfforward,it washewhopropoundedtheidealsofthefledgling Society.Heputforwardasthebasicidealforatrue Vincentiantheideaofbrotherhood-loveforone's neighbour.Inhelpingothers,theyshoulddoit fromamotiveofunselfishnessandfortheloveof God.Theirownlivesshouldalsobeirreproachable.
WiththefoundingofthenewSociety,Frederic') studiesdidnotcease.Theyratherbecamemoreintense.InApril1836hetookouthisdoctoroflaws degreewithhonours.Soonafterhereturnedto Lyonstotakeupthepracticeoflaw.Thelifedid notappealtohim,literaturealwaysremaininghis firstlove.In1837hetemporarilygaveupthepractice,togainhisdoctorateofliterature.

OneaspectofOzanam'slife,oftenoverlookedis hissocioeconomicconvictions.Hewasamanacutely awareofthesocialproblemswhichexistedinFrance asaresultofthe1789Revolution.Oneinevery20 personswasapauperandinParisalonetherewere 267,000unemployed.Hewasconvincedthatif Catholics,especiallytheclergy,hadconcerned themselveswiththepoorandtheworkingclasses inthetenyearsupto1848,theycouldfeelmore certainofthefuture.
