MarxistsAndJews
Sir,-Inarecentradio replyDr.Rumblestatedthat itwouldbeagainstthereligionofaJudaisttobea Communist.Itisofcourse wellknownthatmanyCommunistsareJews.
HilaireBellocwroteon thesubjectinG.K.'sWeekly,London,February4, 1937,as.follows:"Asfor anyonewhodoesnotknow thatthepresentrevolutionaryBolshevistmovementis JewishinRussia,Icanonly saythathemustbeaman whoistakeninbythesuppressionsofourdeplorable Press."
TheJewishChronicle (London,January6,1933) notedtheprosperitybrought totheJudaistsinthese words:"Overone-thirdof theJewsinRussiahavebecomeofficials."
Itis, ofcourse, absolute nonsensetospeakofthe "destructionofsynagogues." Nosuchactiontookplace, andtheproofofthatisthe silenceofourlocal'Judaic pressandthetestimonyof theunfortunaterefugees fromCommunist-dominated countries.
Theonly"persecution" thatthesynagoguehashad tobearintheSovietisthat ofitscongregationshaving toworkonSaturdays!
Theso-called"anti-semitictrialsoftheninedoctors"wasalaughablepiece ofplay-acting,inwhichthe prosecutorsandJustice Ministersdirectingthetrial wereJudaists. Observe, however, the mannerinwhichallofthe thenrulersarenowtop- plinginCommunistlands, inexactlythesameway thatthepredecessorsdid. WasCommunism"antisemitic"whentheJew Trotskywasmurderedon theordersoftheJewBeria? Ofcoursenot. But Jewsmerelybecausemany areCommunistsisnot aproofthatCommunismis essentiallyJewish:avery plausiblecasecouldbebuilt upinAustraliathatCommunismisIrishbecauseso manypeople, renegadesto theChurchandtoIreland, havedisgracedtheirfamily namesbyembracingCommunism.
Anyonewhostudiesthe religionofJudaismwillbe struckbythefactthatit doesdotrelyonauthority. ThereisnothingcorrespondingtoaPope, ora Synod, oraconferencein theJudaicreligionwhich haspowertodefinemorals ordogmas.
iscompletelypreposterous.
ThefactsarethatthereligionofJudaismisincapableofgivingitsfollowers directioninthismatter, and thatmanyJudaistsbybirth havebecometheleadersof theCommunistconspiracy. Itisimportantthatthisdistinctionbekeptclearlyin mind.

DoubtsDifference
Sir,-Iwasastonishedto readthatDr.Rumblesaid thatJudaismandCommunismareincompatible!Jacob Schiff,hesays,repentedof assistingtheBolesheviks.
ButIdoknowthatThe JewishChronicle,London, in1919,statesthat:
"Thereismuchinthe factofBolshevismitself,in thefactthatsomanyJews areBolshevists, inthefact thattheidealsofBoislam atmanypointsarec nantwiththefinestidealsof Judaism."
Ayearlater,whensurely themostoptimisticobserver couldnothavefailedto knowofthehugebloodbathswhichwereinprogressthroughouttheSoviet Republics,TheAmerican HebrewofSeptember10, 1920,saidthis:
"WhatJewishidealism andJewishdiscontenthave sopowerfullycontributedto accomplishinRussia, the samehistoricqualitiesof theJewishmindandheart aretendingtopromotein othercountries."
Butevenin1935,Rabbi StephenWiseisreportedin theAmericanBulletinof May15,1935,assaying: "SomecallitMarxism-I callitJudaism." Asafinalamazingfact, thereisanewspapercalled theJewishClarion(London),andtheproprietors aretheJewishCommitteeof theBritishCommunist Party.
Doesthissuggestthatit ispossibleforpeoplecallingthemselves"Jews"to beCommunists?Ofcourse itdoes-whyeventhesecretaryofourlocalCommunistPartyisSamAarons!
WhatCatholicshaveto beveryinterestedinisto examinetoseeifthereis anythinginthereligionof Judaismwhichcouldforbid Communistactivities-itis wrongtoblameareligion oranationforthefaultsof somemembers.
TheessenceofJudaismis freedomfromauthoritysohowanyone, evenso eminentasDr.Rumble couldclaimthatJudaism takesaunifiedreligious standagainstCommunism,
