Hesaidthathismissionaryzealhadinfectedall privilegedtohearandmeet himanditwasconfidently expectedthattheprogress ofthesocietyintheWest wouldbegreatlyadvanced byhisvisitandhisuntiring workonitsbehalfduring thepastfiveweeks.

Takingashistextthe clauseoftheHolyName pledge:"Ipledgemysupporttoalllawfulauthority bothcivilandreligious," FatherFitzmauricesaidthat insuchagatheringofCatholicmanhoodmightbeseen thesignthatGodhadgiven toHisChurchinthisage.
Thegreatobjectofthe enemiesoftheChurchhad beentodriveawedgebetweentheCatholicshepherdsandtheirflock.Not alonehadtheyfailedin that,buttheChurchhad beenstrengthenedbytheir veryefforts.
ThatwasthesignofvictorywhichGodhadnever failedtogiveHispeople.In daysgonebywhenChristendomwasunderattack Godraisedupgreatmento meetthecrisis.
Werethecrisisdoctrinal, agreatteacherordoctorof theuirchwouldleadmen sec tothetruth;were it tary,someinspiring leaderwouldrallythe forcesofChristendom;were itmoral,somesaintwould begivenwhoseflamingzeal wouldfillmen'shearts.
Today,Godwasmaking useofthelaity.Thiswas theageofthelaymaninthe lifeoftheChurch.Thiswas thetimewhenthesupport ofeveryCatholicmanwas needed.
Augustine'sBoast
Thewords:"Ipledgemy supporttoalllawfulauthoritybothcivilandreligious,"mustneverbecome anemptyformulaonthe lipsofaHolyNameman. Bymeansofthesimpledisciplineofhismembership hewasenabledtoassistthe Churchmightilyinhistime.
SuchsocietiesastheHoly NameSocietyaffordedthe climateinwhichtheChurch mightmakemostprogress. Wheretheregularpractice ofthefaithaboundedamong ordinarymen,theChurch wasgiventhatsupport whichenabledhertoforge aheadwithherwork.
Andthus,amanwasa betterCatholicforbeinga HolyNameman.Hewas likewiseabetterAustralian forbeingagoodCatholic.
Ifthehistoryofthepast centurybeeverobjectively, andComprehensivelywritten,itwouldbeacknowledgedthattheCatholic Churchhadcontributedbeyondmeasuretothelifeof thisnation.
Thatwasastruetodayas itwasinthedayswhenSt. Augustinesaid:
"Letthosewhosaythat thedoctrineofChristis harmfultotheStateprovide anarmyofsoldierssuchas thedoctrineofChristbids soldierstobe;letthemproducesuchsubjects,such parentsandchildren,such mastersandslaves,such kings,judges,taxpayersand tax-gatherers,asChristian doctrinewouldhavethem be-andthenletthemdare assertthatthisdoctrineis harmfultotheState.
"Rather,letthemunhesitatinglyadmit,thatwhen
observed,itistheState's greatestsalvation."
ItwastheCatholicChurch thatchallengedsecularism andwithuntoldsacrifice helditatbayuntilthe nationhadtime recognisetheevilofitsgodless educationalprogrnrnme.
Itwasandis,theCatholic ChurchthatfoughtCommunismatatimewhenour intellectualandsocialleaderstrifledwithit.
ItwastheCatholicChurch alonethatresistedthose elementsthat-wouldstrike attherootoffamilylife. Shespokefortheunborn, shecherishedtheaged.
Andiftherecordsofthe HolyNameSocietybe examined,itwouldbeseen thatthepeacetimecontributionofvirtuewasbacked byacorrespondingcontributionofvalourintimeof war.
AHolyNamemanhad reasontobeproudofhis society.Godandcountry alikewerehonouredbyhis livinguptoitsideals.

HisGrace,whowasaccompaniedbythenational chaplain,theRt.Rev.Mgr. E.Moss,wasmetonhisarrivalbythenationalpresident,Mr.J.Finnegan;nationalsecretary,Mr.J.W. Whitelyandthenational treasurer,Mr.C.Watson.
Mr.Finneganextendeda welcometoHisGracethe Archbishop,toMonsignor Mossandthedelegatesand visitorsassembledforthe convention.
Mr.Finneganspokeof theassistancegiventhe societyatalltimesbyHis Grace,andoftheinterest takenbyhiminitsactivities.

Regardinglaudatoryremarksexpressedwithregardtohisassociationwith theH.A.C.B.S.,saidHis Grace,heneedscarcelysay, thattodoanythingforthem, hadalwaysbeenagreat pleasureandagreatprivilege.
Hewasdelightedtobe associatedwiththeopening oftheirconventionand
joinedwiththenational presidentinextendinga welcometoallthedeputies fromthevariousStatesof Australiaandparticularly tothedelegatefromNew Zealand.
Inwelcomingthem,His Graceexpressedthesincere wishthattheirstaywould behappy,beneficialto themselvesandtotheinterestsofthesociety.
HereinW.A.,theArchbishopcontinued,wehad notthepopulationofsome oftheStatesrepresented therethatmorning;they hadnotthematerialresourcesofthoseStates,but, theyhadhospitality,and thathospitalitywouldmore thancompensateforour otherdeficiencies.
"WehavebeenveryhonouredtohavetheNational DirectoryinW.A."saidthe Archbishop."Itisthethird timeweha'ehadsuchan honour,andIhopeitwill notbethelast.Knowing themembersoftheDirectoryasIdo,Icanassure youthattheaffairsofthe societyhavebeeninvery safe,veryconscientiousand veryefficienthandsindeed."
TheChurch,continued HisGrace,isthemotherof societies,aswellasindividuals,andofthosesocieties nonewasmorenoteworthy intheChurchinAustralia thanthesocietytheywere privilegedtorepresent.
OnJune24,theReverendWitoldDzieciol willmarkhissilverjubileeofpriesthood.
FatherDzieciolwasbornmany.InNovember,1948, in1907,atTomaszowMazo-ihewasappointedparish wiecki,Poland.HestudiedpriestforthePolishparish atKielceandwasordainedinRegensburginBavaria byBishopLosinskiin1931,anddeanofRegensburgdisatKielce,Poland. trict.
DuringthefirstyearofTheHolyFather,Pius hispriesthoodFatherDzie-XII,realisinghowterribly ciolwascurateatSt.Woj-thePoleshadsufferedfrom ciech's(St.Albert's)parishGermans,createdaspecial atKielceandlaterhewasdiocesefortheminGertransferredtoKielceCathe-manyandAustriaimmedral,at'firstinthesamediatelyafterthearmistice. capacityandthenasanadministratoroftheCathedral parishof25,000souls.He wasstillthereattheoutbreakofwarin1939.
Itwasveryhardtoperformpriestlydutiesunder Germanoccupation.Father Dziecioldidnotescapethe fatewhichovertookthou-1 sandsofotherPolishpriests.
ConcentrationCamps
TheGestapoarrestedhim inMay,1942,andaftersix weeksofimprisonmentin thelocaljail,hewastaken totheconcentrationcamp atOswiecim(Auschwitz).
FromAuschwitztheGermanstransferredFather DziecioltothecampatMauthausen,latertoGusenin UpperAustria(wherehe hadtoworkinaquarry) andfinallytothenotorious Dachauconcentrationcamp.
FatherDzieciolgreeted
TheformerArchbishopof thePolisharmy,HisGrace ArchbishopJ.Gawlina,was appointedtheBishopofdinaryofthatdiocese.
HisSeewasatFrankfurton-Maine.Sevenhundred Polishpriestsworkedinthat enormousdiocese.
Theywerethepriestsliberated concentrationmostlyfromDachau camps, i which(andothercamps) theGermanshadmurdered 2,000Polishpriests.
In1949Rev.FatherDzieciolwasnominatedacanon byArchbishopGawlina. Thatwasdoneinacknowledgementofhisexceptionalmeritsandservicesasa priest,anorganiserandan excellentsocialworker.
TravelledTheState
InJanuary,1950,Father Dzieciolmigratedwithother PolestoAustralia.Atfirst hewasattachedtotheimmigrationcampatCunderdinfromwhichhewas transferredtoNortham camp.
FromNorthamhetravelledbytrainandbusallover WestAustraliavisiting Poles.
Whenin1951acarwas boughtforhim,fromdonationsofPolesandsomeAustralians,FatherDzieciolwas abletoperformhisduties moreeffectivelyandcould visitPolesinmostremote places.
Thiskindofworkhas beenverydifficultattimes. buthashadrichresults.

theliberatingAmerican armywithjoybecausehe couldperformhispriestly dutiesagainwithoutbeing hampered. HestartedtoworkamongPolesatHohenfelsinGer-
HeofferedMassesintents andintheopenwhereoften noMasswassaidbefore; heenabledthePoles,some ofwhomdidnotknowEnglishatall,togotoConfessionintheirownlanguage. FatherDzieciolhasconvalidatedmanymarriages andreconciledmanybroken familiesandhasdistributed Catholicpublicationsand hooks.

Asfarbackas85years ago,theneedwasseenby themenofvisionofthose days,forasocietysuchas theirs:andsocameinto beingtheH.A.C.B.S.
Itsinfancywasmarked byanheroicstruggleforexistence,butitdidexist,it didsurvive,anditgrewin strengthandstability,until todaytheyhadasmanyas 600branchesthroughout AustraliaandNewZealand, withamembershipof nearly44,000.
ThefutureoftheHibernianAustralasianCatholic BenefitSocietywasanoble oneanditwasdestinedto
continuetobeagreatinfluenceinthiscontinent.Its title"Catholic"suggested itsbasicprinciple;ithad evermaintainedandsustainedahighmoraland socialtone,anditbreathed thepurestatmosphereof Catholicideals,Catholic principlesandCatholic loyalties. Thesocietyhadexercised aninfluenceforgoodthatit wouldbedifficulttooverestimate. Thatinfluencewasfelt notonlyintheparticular sphereofreligionbutin everydepartmentofpublic He.
Unitywasstrength.With thatconnectinglink,both stabilityandprogresshad beenachieved.
TheArchbishopsaidhe hopedthatnothingwould everweakenthatlinkof unityandharmony.
Establishedonstrictly Catholiclines,thesociety deservedandhadreceived thehighestcommendation, foritsenvironmentwassuch astofosteranddevelop,not onlythespiritualandmaterialinterestsofitsmembers, butthewholemoraltoneof society,towhoseworldly

Ifpresenttrendswerenotchecked,thetime wouldcomewhenpracticallythewholeAustralian populationwascentredinafewcities,thesecretaryoftheNationalCatholicRuralMovement,Mr. Santomaria,toldaconferenceofthemovementin Canberrarecently.
Alreadytwo-thirdsorthree-quartersofthepopulationwerecentredinafewcitiesstrungaround thecoastlineofAustralia.
Theruralmovementexistedtoproclaimthe moralprimacyofagricultureand_theruralwayof lifeintheAustraliansocialorder.
Membersofthemovement,bytheiradvocacyof rurallife,couldhaveaneffectonthefuturedevelopmentofAustralia.
Themovementexistedtoproclaimanidea,to breakitdownintopublicpoliciesandaprogramme,andtocreateaforceofmenandwomendedicatedtobringingittofruition.
Themovementstoodfortheideaofindependent familyfarmsoperatedbythefamilyunderasystemofdiversifiedproduction.
Itadvocatedtheintenseuseofeveryacreof!and toachieveitsmaximumproduction.
Mr.Santamariadeniedthatthemovementsought tointroduceintoAustraliapeasantagricultureof the"threeacresandacow"variety.

Hesaidjournalistswhohadarrivedatthisdecisionafterthelastconferenceofthemovementin Alburydidnotknowthemovement'spolicy.

Theevidenceshowedthatintheenvironmentof thefamilyfarm,thesmallindustryandthesmall governmentinstitutionsofdecentralisedtowns,religionflourished.
Nomatterhowmuchthechurchesworkedand toiled,religionwouldnotflourishinindustrial areas.
Australiansshouldnotbesatisfiedwiththe migrationprogramme,Mr.Santamariasaid.Much hadbeendone,butmuchmorecouldhavebeen accomplished.
SynthesisOfCulturesAdvocated
A5percent.savingintheconsumptionofthe nationalincomeinvestedinmigrationwouldallow Australiatobringin300,000migrantsannually.
Advocatingmigrationrffamilies,Mr.Santamaria saidAustraliahodanobligationincharitytothe homelessandthevictimsofpersecutionandwar.
Hewasnotinfavourofthatmethodofassimilationinwhichthemigrantwasexpectedtoshed histraditionandculturetoembracethesacredAustralianculture-whateverthatmightbe.

Ifthemethodsusedweregoodandproperand weredirectedtoagoodandChristianend,then organisationwaspraiseworthyandindeedeven necessary.

Iftheproofofthepuddingistobehadinthe eatingitcanbeshownthatinRed-dominatedcountriestherehasbeennotedatoo-readypliancyto co-operatewithatheisticofficialsinordertoobtain temporarybenefitswhichultimatelyproveillusory. Andinthefreesocietiesthereisadisturbingtrend towardsMarxismamongChristianclergymen.Very likelythereisnoquestionofmalice,butthereisa gullibilityfromwhichtheacceptanceofauthoritativereligiousguidancewouldhaverescuedthem. FAITHHEALINGMAYDODAMAGE
Thepanelofdoctorswhowereappointedbythe BritishMedicalAssociationtoinvestigatethequestion ofwhatarecommonlycalledfaithcuresorspiritual healinghasperformedavaluablepublicservice. Broadlyspeakingtheirfindingsfollowthetraditional thoughtoftheCatholicChurch.Brieflythatisthat throughfaithinGodorthroughsuggestionthe cureofnervousorfunctionaldisordersofthebody maybe,andis,effected.Butorganicdisordersat presentclassifiedbythemedicalprofessionasincurablemayalsobesetright.Suchcuresarenot explicablebyhumancausesandpostulatesupernaturalintervention.Althoughsuchcureshave takenplaceallthroughhumanhistory(andthey occurtoday)thefunctionofhealingthebodyisnot anormalpartofthemissionoftheChurch.

Amajorpointagainstthereligionswhichrest cnrealorreportedhealingwasmadebytheB.M.A. panelwhentheystatedthatoftenenoughwhat faithhealingclearsupissymptomsratherthanroot causes.Indeeditisonlycommonsensetorecognise thatiflocalisedpainiscausedbyastateofmind itmayberemovedbyachangeofmind.Soitis thatthenewreligionswhichpeddlereligiousfaith asanostrumforalltheillsofthebodyareforthe mostpartmanifestationsofsheernaturalism.They donotrelyonfaithinGodinanyrealmeaning oftheword"faith".Theirhopeisplacedratherin psychologicalprocesseswhichmayaswellinduce atheismasChristiandevotion.Insofarastheycan dealonlywithfunctionalandnervousdisorders,the endresultoftheiroperationsmaybehazardous bothtothephysicalandspiritualwelfareoftheir adherents.
Theendresultofthiswoolly,ever-corrigibleChristiansentiment,asitrelatestoeducation,istoadd confusiontoaprocesswhichalreadylacksdirection. Tochildrenrearedinaclassroomatmospherewhere Goddoesn'tmatter,thevaguenessandcontradictionswhichScripturalstudyinvolvesinProtestantismmerelyconfirmstheminindifferentism.And onthereligiousplanethatistheidealpreparation forMarxismforitisbutaveneeredmaterialism.
Intheprevailingspiritualclimateofthislandit isidletothinkthattherewillbeanymajormove toabolishormodifytheneutralschool.Butaneffectivecounter-blastmaybemaintainedandextendedifGovernmentaidcanberalliedforthe privateschoolsinwhichreligionisnotonlytaught butimpenetrateseverythingelseonthecurriculum.
