Thetotalcostofthepresbyterywas£3,400andthat lowsumwasmadepossible bythewillingworkofenergeticparishionersorganised undercapableandskilled tradesmen.

When,annually,theCatholicsoftheArchdioceseunitewiththeirbrethrenallovertheworldinaday ofcontinuousprayerforthepersecutedChristians ofEuropeandAsia,itisnotaloneapracticalact ofcharitynoranaffirmationofsolidarity.Primarily itispotenttestimonytothevalueofsufferingin theChristianlife.Thosemillionsoflives,captive andabnegatedbehindtheIronandBambooCurtains, arenotwasted.TheyareconfessorsoftheFaith andtheirsufferingsarefusedwiththoseofChrist tomakeupwhatiswantinginHisPassionforthe redemptionofmankind.Ourprayersforthemare directednotonlyinthehopeofreliefandforthe graceoffortitude,butweseek,too,toshareinthe meritswonfromheavenbythecrucifixionofChrist's MysticalBody.
Thatthoughtshouldgowithusintotheclimaxof Lent-HolyWeek-whentheChurchre-en the ineffabledramaofredemption.Thisyear, ough thegreatwisdomandsolicitudeoftheCommon Fatherforthecommonman,Catholicsmaypartici- pateinthesacredmysteriesinamoreintimate mannerthaneverbefore.Therestoredritesof HolyWeek,fromthepointofviewofconvenience andofdramaticpresentation,shouldhaveapro- foundimpactoneveryCatholicwhoavailshim- selfoftheChurch'sintentionininauguratingthe reform.Andjustasweshareeachoneofusin themeritsofChrist'ssalvificdeathandinthe CrosswhichHelaysontheChurch,sotoo,welook throughthedarknessforthecertainhopeofHer andourresurrection.
WhatdeepensthetragedyofChrist'sre-enacted Passionisthatforsomanyinourtimetheabyss ofgriefisonlyequalledbytheabyssofignorance. ItcannotbutbeatormenttotheChristiancon- sciencethatforthemassesofoursecularisedsociety GoodFridayandEasterSundayarenothingmore thanholidays.Thereisverylittlemaliceinthe world'sattitudetoChristbutthereissheerlackofknowledgewhichmountsfromgenerationtogen- eration.Thosewhoaspiredinthelastcenturyto teardownthecrucifixesfromtheclassroomshave succeededalltoowell.Nottheleastofthesorrows ofHolyWeekwillbethatforsomanyChristseem- inglyhasdiedinvain.WithHimthereisplenteous redemption,butthegoodnewsoftheGospelisnot widespread.

ThreeClassesInvitedByChrist
WhydidChristletamanhelp?BecauseHe wantedtoteachusallalesson.ChristsharedHis crosswithamanandgavethatmanthegraceto suffergladlyandthegreatergracetosavehis soul,toshowusthenecessityofsalvationthrough thecross.
Thisisamostvitalandimportantlesson:that thecrossbywhichweareredeemedistobeborne, notbyChristalonebutbyeveryoneofHis followers.
Ifwearetosaveourimmortalsouls,wemust usethesamemeansGodhaschosentoeffectour redemption,namely,thecross.

InitsdecreeofNovember16,1955,bywhichtheceremoniesofHolyWeekarechangedinmany respects,theSacredCongregationofRitesaskedthateveryeffortbemadetoacquaintthepeople withthenatureofthechangesandtheirmeaning.Itisthepurposeofthisarticletosuggest,then, whatthosewhoattendtheHolyWeekservicesaccordingtothenewritualmayexpecttofindin thewayofanenrichmentoftheirspirituallifethroughthisparticipation.
Inonewayoranother,itcanbesaidthatthewhole weekbetweenPalmSundayandEasterisaffectedbythe changes.Themostorderlywayseemstobetoconsidereach dayoftheweekrespectively,pointingoutthechangesand suggestinghowthelaitymaybestprofitfromthem.
Itis,afterall,thechiefreasonforthevariouschanges, -thatthepeoplemaybemoreabletoparticipateinthe entireHolyWeekliturgy,alsothattheymayfindthatparticipationmaremeaningful.
MilitantDevotionToTheKing
Tobeginwith,PalmSundaywillnolongerofficiallybe knownor"TheSecondPassionSunday."(Undoubtedlythe termbywhichwehaveknownthedaysolongwillcontinue inpopularusageforawhile.
Thereasonforthechangeistoconcentrateattention onthePassion,whichwillbeattheheartoftheChurch's liturgyfortheentireweek.Thiswasnotsoclearlybrought outundertheoldertitle.
Thetongceremonyhithertousedfortheblessingof palmsbeforetheprincipalMasshasbeenmuchshortenedin thehopethatattentionwillnowbefocussedontheprocessionwithitsgreatvalueasapublicaffirmationofmilitant devotiontoChristtheKing.
Thehymn,Gloria,busethonor,whichusedtobesung alternativelybytheministersandpeopleoutsidethechurch andasmallergroupofsingersbehindtheclosedchurchdoors, hosnowbeenmadeapartoftheprocessionitself.

Perhapssomewillregretthelossofthisdramaticepisode, whenthechurchdoorswereopenedattheknockingwiththe footoftheprocessionalcross.
But,atbest,italwaysseemeddifficulttoco-ordinate thesingingofpeopleandchoir,andmuchwillbegainedby incorporatingthegreathymnintotheprocession.
TheMassformularyforPalmSundayremainsthesome, butthereisachangeintheGOSD21(perhapsthefeatureof theMassthathasalwaysbeenmostobvioustothelaity, ofitslength).
NowtheaccountofthePassionwillbeginwiththe beginningofChrist'sfinalsufferingsinthegardenofGethsemane,insteadofwiththedinneratthehouseofSimonthe leper.
NothingofthedramaticvalueofthePassionstorywill belost,butitwillbesomewhatmorepracticalforboth ministersandpeople--especiollyattheHighMosswhenthe
gospelissunginitsentiretybythethreeministersrepresentingChronicler,Synagogue(orCrowd)andChristHimself.
TheaccountofthePassionisnowsungstraightthrough, withouttheformerseparotionofPassionaccountandGospel proper. TheMassforMondayremainsunchanged,asitdoes forTuesdayandWednesday,thoughonthelatterdaysthe Gospelwillglsobeshortened,asonPalmSunday,totheactual accountofChrist'spassionanddeath.

OneofthedaysmostaffectedbytheneworderisHoly Thursday,andthisinmanyways.Althoughincathedralsa morningMosswillcontinuetobecelebrated,thiswillbethe specialMossf)rtheBlessingoftheOils,nottheMossof theFeasttocommemoratetheLostSupperandtheInstitution oftheEucharist.
ThisfestiveMassnowmustbecelebratedintheevening -i.e.,betweenthehoursoffiveandeightp.m.,withthesofa purposeofmakingitmoreeasyforlargernumbersofpeople toattend.

Twosingers,whosesingingwasmuchappreciated, wereMr.JosephSavage andMr.RonPallestrini. Mr.FrankComberproduced unusualmusicfromanunusualinstrument-theclavialine.
ThencametheCathedral boys'choir.Theysangin faultlessstyletwonumbers, "0BoneJesu,"and"Shan-
