HisGracetheArchbishop welcomedtheDaughtersof CharitytotheArchdiocese. Theifonameandfamehad precededthem,andthey broughtwiththemthe splendidtraditionsthat characterisedtheirworkin allcontinents,hesaid.
TwooftheSisterswould visitthesickpoorintheir homes.Theotherswould careforthepatientswhom theyadmittedtotheHospice.
Thatwasonlyatemporaryarrangement,HisGrace said,madeavailablethrough
thekindnessandcourtesyof theSistersofMercy. Alreadytherewere11 patientsandtherewasaccommodationforonly12.
ButtheDaughtersof Charityhadalreadyacquiredan11-acresite(witha largehouse)onthebanks oftheSwannearGuildford wheretheyintendedbuildingtheirpermanenthospice whenfinancewasavailable. Socialservice,HisGrace continued,wasonlyamodernnameforanancient fact-afactasoldasChristianity.IntheSisterhood
Historians,forthemost partprejudiced,placedthe zealoftheearlyChristians amongstthecausesforthe spreadofChristianity.
TheDaughtersofCharity hadgraspedthatspiritthat madepatricianladiestake intotheirhomesandnurse backtolifephysicallyobjectionableslaves,because theysawinthoseslaves theirbrothersinChrist.

Andfromtheremarksofspeakerspublishedinthe press,itwouldseemthatthestatement,issuedlast yearbytheCatholicHierarchyofAustralia,onthe menaceofthecitieshashadconsiderableeffect.It isnoteworthythatthechallengetocitygrowthhas notcomefromthesuburbswherelocalliberties wereactuallydestroyedorthreatenedbutfromthe country.Whetherthegrowthofthecapitalcities ofourlandhasbeentheresultofdeliberatepolicy ornot,itiscertainthatoursurvivaldependseither uponareversalofpolicyorupontheinauguration ofpolicywhichwillleadtodecentralisationasan urgentproject.
TheCatholicBishopsintheirstatement,"Big Cities,"issuedinSeptemberoflastyear,showbeyondcontroversythattheherdingofpopulationin thecapitalsdistortsthepatternofnationaldevelopment;rendersthecountryindefensible;lowersthe birth-rate;unbalancestheeconomy;reducesliving standards;andresultsinadeclineinreligiousbelief andpractice.Itwouldbedifficulttopaintamore depressingpictureanditissurprisingtoreadin ourmorningcontemporary,"whethercentralisation isthemonstrousthingitissometimessaidtobe maybedoubted."Itmaynotbedoubtedbyanyone consciousoftheterriblepoweroftheatomandwith awilltosurvival. Itwouldappearthatthereisaheavyapathyin oorranks,thatweimaginewecandoonaleisurely, part-timebasiswhatourenemiesaccomplish throughlargenumbers,24-hourdaysandwholehearteddevotion.Moreover,therehasgrownupthe delusionthatourenemiescanbestbemetbythe adoptionoftheirtactics.Thatsurelyisafatal hallucinationwhichhistoryandexperiencealike belie.What,inthesocialorder,isthemostamazingphenomenonwastheabilityofthediristian Faithoversixcenturiestoextirpatetheim orial institutionofslaveryandinanothersixtocreate asocietyoffreemen.Butthiswasnotaccomplished bydirectsocialactionorbyemployingthetechniquesoftheage.ItfollowedasasocialconsequencefromtheapplicationsofChristiancharity.

Thereismuchmoreweightofanhistoricalkind fordrinkingthanforabstinence.WhenIamtold thereisnothingtobesaidforstrongdrink,Icannot butrecallthedictumfromtheOldTestamentthat winewasmeanttorejoicetheheartofman.Nor canweblinkoverthemiracleatCana,inGalilee. ThereareinScriptureandinthewritingsofthe Fathersandthesaintsmanydirewarningsagainst abuseandexcessinalcoholicindulgence.But nowherecanonefindablanketprohibitionskulking aboutintheguiseofthevirtueoftemperance.
Theproposalsof'theprohibitionistaredownrightlysillyandademonstrationoftheirlogical absurditiesissimpletoproducebyapplyingsimilar pl-inciplestoothervices.Forinstance,itwouldbe possibletoeliminatecertaintypesofunchastityby Acompletesegregationofthesexes.Itispossible tocureaheadachebytheadministrationofarsenic. 'Theftcouldbeeliminatedbyasystemofgovernmentsubsidytothieves.Spitefultalkingwouldbe notablyreducedbytheamputationoftongues.But innosinglecaseistheviceobjectedtomore monstrousthanthecureproposed.IftheChurch isconcernedaboutthespreadoffornicationand adultery,itishardlylessworriedbytheManichean project,thatmarriageisintrinsicallyevil.
Theextremist-whetherhebeahedonistora prohibitionist-iswrongforthesimplereasonthat hisproposaltakesnocognisanceofwhatmenare like,existentiallyorideally.Thereisnointrinsic evilinkegpartiesprovidedthenumberofdrinkers isinreasonableproportiontothequantitytobe consumed.Itmightevenbearguedthatmenwho countbeeramongtheirchiefpleasuresarethereby deliveredfromrealviceswhichwaituponaimless menwithouthobbies.Ifoneexceptsthoseinwhom alcoholicover-indulgencesinducestearsorbellicocityitcanscarcelybedeniedthatalcoholstimulates jovialityandtothatextentmaybecofisideredan auxiliarytothevirtueofcharitywhichhasgrown distressinglycoldinourtimes.

Notinfrequentlydeathisdealtoutnotonlyto theunbornbaby,buttothemotheralso.Unhappily manyofthesecasesstemfromthehorrortalesput aboutbytheadvocatesofbirthprevention.There arenoscientificbasesforthesesobstories-theyare nobetterthanoldwives'tales.Buttheyservetheir purposeinanagewhichhasmoreappetitefor pleasurethanforthehappinessofhomelife.Not uncommonlyitisthefailureoftheprescriptions peddledbycontraceptivequackswhichdrivestmbalancedyoungwomenintothehandsofthatother partyofcharlatans-theabortionists.Itisapractice carriedoutbystealthandhenceitdoesrotmeet theweightofpublicopprobriumwhichitshould. puttheresponsibleelementsofthemedicalprofessionareworriedaboutitsdimensions.
RecentlyawomaninSydneywasconvictedof procuringanabortionandheardfromMr.Justice O'Sullivanaveryrefreshingdisquisitionuponthe rightsoftheunbornchild.Itisamattertooeasily overlookedthattherightsofmendonotcommence fromthemomentofbirthbutfromthemomentof conception.Thechildinthewombhasasmuch righttolifeaswhenheisadeliveredbabycapable ofseparateexistence.Totamperdirectlywiththat lifeismurderobjectivelyanditisaconsideration whichappliestoagooddealof"accepted"medical practicesinthematterof"therapeutic"abortion. Andfromtheremarksofspeakerspublishedinthe press,itwouldseemthatthestatement,issuedlast yearbytheCatholicHierarchyofAustralia,onthe menaceofthecitieshashadconsiderableeffect.It isnoteworthythatthechallengetocitygrowthhas notcomefromthesuburbswherelocalliberties wereactuallydestroyedorthreatenedbutfromthe country.Whetherthegrowthofthecapitalcities ofourlandhasbeentheresultofdeliberatepolicy ornot,itiscertainthatoursurvivaldependseither uponareversalofpolicyorupontheinauguration ofpolicywhichwillleadtodecentralisationasan urgentproject.
TheCatholicBishopsintheirstatement,"Big Cities,"issuedinSeptemberoflastyear,showbeyondcontroversythattheherdingofpopulationin thecapitalsdistortsthepatternofnationaldevelopment;rendersthecountryindefensible;lowersthe birth-rate;unbalancestheeconomy;reducesliving standards;andresultsinadeclineinreligiousbelief andpractice.Itwouldbedifficulttopaintamore depressingpictureanditissurprisingtoreadin ourmorningcontemporary,"whethercentralisation isthemonstrousthingitissometimessaidtobe maybedoubted."Itmaynotbedoubtedbyanyone consciousoftheterriblepoweroftheatomandwith awilltosurvival. Itwouldappearthatthereisaheavyapathyin oarranks,thatweimaginewecandoonaleisurely, part-timebasiswhatourenemiesaccomplish throughlargenumbers,24-hourdaysandwholehearteddevotion.Moreover,therepasgrownupthe delusionthatourenemiescanbestbemetbythe adoptionoftheirtactics.Thatsurelyisafatal hallucinationwhichhistoryandexperiencealike belie.What,inthesocialorder,isthemoamazingphenomenonwastheabilityofthe Faithoversixcenturiestoextirpatethe rial institutionofslaveryandinanothersixtocreate asocietyoffreemen.Butthiswasnotaccomplished bydirectsocialactionorbyemployingthetechniquesoftheage.ItfollowedasasocialconsequencefromtheapplicationsofChristiancharity.
