Itisthelifestoryof Gunju,oneofthetribe'f Negritoswhowerethefirst inhabitantsofAustralia,and whostilllivedinTasmania whenthewhitemensettled inourland. Itisafascinatingstory, allthemoreinterestingbecauseofitsscientificbacking.Theappealiswide, andIfearmumanddad willbereadingitfirst,but itwillenthrallanychildof 12oroverwhohasanenquiringmind.

Mr.PhonBarker,anexpresidentoftheLeederville Y.C.W.branch,andMrs.T. Daly,formerdiocesanpre- sidentoftheGirls'Movement,gaveinterestingtalks onpreparationformarriage.

Mr.Barker,whowasrecentlymarriedandisabout to saidmoveintohisnewhome, thatyoungpeopleshouldmakeeveryeffortto securetheownershipof theirownhomeswherethey couldbesafefromreceving a themweek'snoticeordering tomoveout.

Manyyoungmarried couples,especiallythose whohadpassedthrough CatholicActionmovements, werekeenlyawareofthe benefitsattachedtohome ownership,andMr.Barker pointedoutthetremendous difficultiesthesepeopleencounterediftheymadeno financialpreparationbefore marriage.

OutsideofStatehousing schemesorparentalhelpit waspracticallyimpossible forthesepeopletobuy theirownhomesiftheyleft ituntilaftertheyweremarriedtosavethenecessary money.

Theyoungerboysand girlsmightnotconsider thatsuchmatterswereany concernoftheirsbutforthe big wouldmajoritymarriage bethenwayofget- tingtoheaven.

Marriagewasplannedby God,hesaid,tobetheway oflifeofmostpeopleand theyshouldprepareforit. TheirbestpreparationwouldbetojoinaY.C.W. savingsschemeorputtheir sparecashintoablockof landwhichwasalwaysa goodinvestment.

Mr.Barkersaidthey shouldalsoconsiderthe possibilityofhelpingsome olderpersontobuildahome onweek-endssothatthey wouldensurehelpforthemselveswhentheirowntime shouldcometobuild.

DevotiontoOurLordin aspiritofself-sacrificeas illustratedbytheMovementprayerwouldbeatremendoushelpinfacingup totheproblemsconnected withhome-buildingand marriageinthesedays.

ApersonalandpenetratingtalkbyMrs.T.Daly gavepointsonpreparation ofspecialinteresttothe girls.Asthemotheroffour childrenwhosehusbandhad himselfbuiltmostoftheir homeaftermarriageshe spokefromthelessons taughtbyhardexperience.

Paris.-The125thanniversaryoftheapparitionof OurLadytoSt.Catherine Labourewasobservedwith HisEminenceMauriceCardinalFeltin,Archbishopof Paris,offeringaMassinthe ChapeloftheMiraculous Medal,wheretheSainthad thevision.

Itwasduringthevision thatSt.Catherinereceived thedesignforamedallion whichhassincebecome knownastheMiraculous Medal.

Oneverymedalisthe prayer:"Maryconceived withoutsin,prayforuswho haverecoursetothee."

howdifferenttheywould findthattheChurch,andindividualpriestsdidreally understandtheirdifficulties andhadthesolutionof theirproblems.Pre-Cana conferenceswereagreat help.

Addingheradviceonthe needforsaving,Mrs.Daly saidthatgirlsoftenspent fartoomuchmoneyon dresses.

Theirclothesshouldbe chosento sonalityexpresstheirperandifgirlswere sensibletheycouldachieve thisexpressionbyusingtheirartistictalentsand avoidingexcessiveexpense.

Somegirlsspoilttheir chancesofmarriageby dressingexpensivelywhen theywerenotpayingboard orhelpingtheirparentsfinancially.Boyswereputoff bytheirexpensiveattire thinkingthattheycould neverhopetoprovidefor suchcostlytastes.

Mrs.Dalyconcludedbypointingouttheharmthat wivescandobyselfishly keepingtheirhusbandsat homewhentheyshouldbe outattendingunionmeetingsandplayingtheirpart incivicaffairs.

Wivesshouldfaceupto theirdutiesinthismatter ifourcountryweretobe savedfromgettingintoan evenworsemess.

TheFamilyRosaryMakes

ThesayingoftheFamilyRosarybegan inmyhomeayearago-inSeptember.I amnotputtingittoostronglywhenIsay thatitisnowoninstitutionwhichmyfamily shallnevergiveup.Itdid,anddoescontain everythingnecessaryfora happyChristianfamily.

PerhapsIcangiveyouan ideaofwhattheFamily RosarymeanstousbytellingyouoftheneedIbelieveithasfilled.

Inthefewyearsofour marriedlife,mywifeandI havelivedinarelatively simpleway.

Fortunatelyweliveina Catholiccommunity,andwe aresurroundedbyavigorousCatholiclife.

Yetweweredissatisfied.

Itseemedtousthat,inspite ofregularchurchattendanceandfrequentHoly Communion,somethingwas missingfromourhome.

IhopeIcanmakethis clear. Thethingthat botheredmeisnotanything youcancometogripswith.

Itwasonlyafewmonths agothatIreadadescription ofthis"thing,"andwhatI readmademerealisethat the"thing"wasnotmy problemalone,buttheprobkmofusall.

PopePiusXIIrecently spokeof"thecurrentof blackpaganismsweeping overpeoplestoday,carrying alonginitsrushnewspapers,magazines,moving pictures,breakingdownthe barriersofself-respectand decency,underminingthe foundationsofChristian cultureandeducation."

Actually,therewasnothOngmissingfrommyhome.

Myuneasinesswascaused bytheincreasingpressure of"thestrongcurrentof blackpaganism"against whichmyfamilycouldtake noeffectivemeasuresbecausewedidnotrealiseits existence.

Nowthatthemenacehas beenidentifiedforwhatit is,Irecognisenotmerely the solutedesirabilitybuttheabnecessityofthedaily FamilyRosaryandother commonfamilydevotions.

IncidentalMusic

Iadoptedasuggestion whichdidawaywithany needforarowofkneeling benchesintheliving-room.

Theideaissimplytosay theRosaryimmediately aftertheeveningmeal, whilestillaroundthetable.

Recallingthissuggestion, andperhapsthesuggestion itself,willseemtosome people,nodoubt,rather silly,butletmestressthat worryaboutthe"mechanics"ofhowtostartthe FamilyRosarywasinmy case(asitprobablyisin thecaseofmanyother youngCatholichusbands) oneoftheprincipalthings thatpostponedactionfora long,longtime.

Nowwesimplyclearthe tableandsaytheRosary. Ordinarilyeverymember ofthefamilyleadsadecade,

butiftimepressesIdonot hesitatetosayitall,oreven sayitalittlefaster,while Iamputtingonmyhatand coat.

Wesayit.

Asforthedisciplineofthe children,that,too,proveda falsebogey.

Afterall,theincidental musicoftheyoungsterstheirlaughs,andshouts,andsobs-doesn'tdistractthe HolyMother,sowhyshould itdistractus?

Thefactistheveryfunniestthingsreallydoseem tohappenwhilewearesayingtheRosary,andthat precioustenor15minutesis consequentlynowlooked forwardtobyallofusas thehappiesthourofthe day.

Ifourtwooldestboysinsistonmakingthemostof thesehappycoincidences,or gointofrequentguffaws overastalefamilyjoke, doesnotthePsalmistdirect usto"shoutwithjoytoGod ourSaviour"?

OnSunday,December11,HisGracethe Archbishopblessedandopenedthenew churchschoolofSt.VincentatMedina.It wasamostsignificantopeninginseveral ways.

Medinacanconfidentlybe expectedtobeametropolis ofthefutureandthiswas thefirstCatholicbuildingin thearea;formanyNew Australiansthebuilding wastheirfirstspiritual homeinAustralia;forthe VincentianFathersitwas theirfirstbuildingintheir firstparishinW.A.,andit wasdesignedandsupervisedbyoneoftheirown priests,Rev.FatherG.V. Harper,C.M.,whowillbe thefirstparishpriest.

Thebuildingisanimposingstructurefunctionallydesignedinredbrickand tile.Itis130feetlongand comprisesfourclassrooms.

Bymeansofslidingdoors,threeoftheseareusedto formachurch84feetlong. Thereisalsoasanctuary, twotemporarysacristies,receptionroom,kitchenand washroom-allunderthe mainroof.

Anexternalwashroom annexeservesthepupils

andattherearofthebuildingisanextensiveareaof bitumenisedplayground.

Thefurnishingsofthe buildingareinaccordwith theexcellentworkmanship shownthroughoutthejob, whichisacredittoallwho haveworkedonit,and especiallysotothedesigner andsupervisor,Rev.Father Harper.

HisGracewaswelcomed byaguardofhonourof littleflowergirlsbeautifully dressedinwhiteandwearingveils.Amongthesewere somechildrenwhothat morninghadmadetheir FirstCommunionatthefirst Massinthenewbuilding.

Aftertheblessingthe officialopeningwasheldin thebuildingitself.Father HarperwelcomedHisGrace andintroducedtheofficial guests.

Christmasisafamilyfeastwithbabyasthe centralfigure.Babyofcourseisalwaysimportant, butwhenthebirthofJesusChristisbeingcom- memoratedeachyear,everyinfanttakesonaspecial importanceandbecomesthelivingemblemto remindusofGod'slove.Eachinfantbringshome tousthelivingrealitiesoftheIncarnation,sooften devitalisedandmadecoldandstatuesquebyart andpiousfiction.Eachinfantremindsusofthat Infant,theWordmadeflesh,throughWhom"Thy splendourhasshonebeforeourmind'seyewitha newradiance,andthroughHimWhomwerecognise asGodmadevisiblewearecarriedawayinloveof thingsinvisible."(PrefaceofChristmasMass.)

ButtherealisationthatGodHimselfbecame presentamongushereonearthsotiny,helpless anddependentisnotthecompletestoryofChristmas.WemustfilloutthedetailsofHiscoming- thestable,thestraw,thesnow,thesilence.These circumstancesofthecomingofChristareenlighteningWerememberthatGodhadinHisown choosingthemannerofHisIncarnation.Weshould trytounderstandwhyHechosethewayofpoverty, ofuttersimplicity,ofworldlyinsignificance.These starkrealitieshavebecomecrustedoverbythe semi-piousglamourisingofChristmaswhichhas developeddownthroughtheages.Wetendto forgetthatananimals'caveisagrimplaceona mid-winternight.WeoverlookthecompletedisregardoftheHolyFamilybythepeopleofBethlehem, Jerusalem,Palestineandthewholeworld.How manyofuswouldhavesoarrangedthingsifthey hadbeenlefttoourwisdom?

TherecanonlybeoneconclusionfromthedifferencebetweenwhatGodHimselfchoseandwhatwe wouldhavearrangedforthebirthoftheDivine Child.Whatwewouldhavethoughtworthyand appropriateGoddidnotuse.Thatcanonlyhave beenbecauseHewishedustounderstandthatour ideaswereerroneousandneededcorrection."What Iwasbornfor,whatIcameintotheworldfor,is tobearwitnessofthetruth,"saidChristtoPilate (John18,v.37).

Leninwouldsaythatthistruthistheopiumof thepeople,foritisthetruththatthosewhoare poorandinconspicuousareclosestinthecircumstancesoftheirlifetotheconditionsoftheHoly Family.ThetruthfuljudgmentofGodconsoles them.Suchconsolationmightbeclassifiedasopium ifitoriginatedfromaconspiracyofthecomfortable; inthecradleofBethlehemit surelycannotbeanythingbutDivineTruth.Itwas oftheChristinthestableandmangerthatthe angelssang"GlorytoGod."

Whatofthosewhoarewell-off,orofthosewho arepeopleofprominenceandconsequence?Are theyexcludedfromthetruejoysofChristmas? Thereisoneconditiontheymustfulfiltounderstand thosejoys-theymustrealisewhatChristispreachingfromHiscradle-thatthegoodthingsofthis life,itspoweranditsriches,mustbehandledwarily, withtherealisationthattherearethingswhichGod valuesmuchmore.HadHethoughtthosethings important,Hewouldhaveusedthem.Thoughthey wouldnothavebeendangerousforHim,theycan bedangerousforus.Toteachus,Heshowedthe waywhichissaferforus.

Thegivingofgifts,sotraditionallylinkedwith Christmas,wouldseemtobebasedononeorother ofthesetwoideas-toprovideabirthdaypresent fortheDivineChildintheunderstandingthat "WhatsoeveryoudototheleastofMylittleonesyou doittoMe,"ortosharewithotherssomeofthe goodthingsGodhasgrantedtous,lestweourselves becometooattachedtothem.

So,thetruespiritofChristmasisaspiritofjoy inthehappybirthofourInfantSaviour,andof generosity-ofsharingwithHimthegoodthings whichwehave.WejoinwithMaryHisMotherin hergreathappiness;inourgenerositywejoinwith allmenofgoodwill,beitonthelevelofthepoor andsimpleshepherdsortheroyalandmagnificent Magi.

Formorethan1,000yearspilgrimshaveclimbedup tothischurch,highinthe mountains,tobegfavours oftheMotherofGod.The storyoftheshrinecentres aroundastatueofOur LadyandherDivineSon.

Thestatueisverymuch olderthantheshrine.In factnooneknowsexactly howolditisorwhereit camefrom.Itisthought thatSt.PeterbroughtthestatuefromJerusalemand leftitwiththefirstBishop ofBarcelona.

Wedoknowthatitwas thereinearlyChristian times.IntheseventhcenturytheMoorsfromAfrica cameintoSpain,killing Christiansandburning churches.

Thelittlestatuewashiddentokeepitawayfrom theMoors.Thosewhohad hiddenitdied,andleftno recordwhereitwas.Years passed,filledwithwarand trouble.Thestatuewas forgotten. passed,Aftermanyyearshad thetimecamewhen OurLadywishedherstatue tobe herdsfoundagain.Shepwerewatchingtheirflocksinthevalleybelow Montserrat,"thesaw-toothedmountain."

Onenighttheysaw strange,brightlightsonthe mountain.Theywerefright- ened,becauseitwasawild anddangerousplacewherenotevenrobberswouldgo. Theywatchedforseveral nights,andfinallyclimbed 'uptoseewhathadmade thelight.

Alovelychurchwassoon builtforthelittlestatue. Manymiracleswereper-formedattheshrine.Noble womenmadebeautiful gownsforthestatueand embroideredthemwith gold theandjewels.Because

statuewasmadeofvery blackwoodthepeoplecalledherLaMorenata-"the littleMoor."

Formanyhundredsof yearsMontserrathashada famousboys'choirschool,whereboysmaylearnto singchurchmusic.People comefromalloverthe worldtohearthem,but moretheycometoprayat theshrinebeforethelittle blackMadonnathatwas hiddensolonginacaveof themountain.

Severaltimesinthe1,000 yearsofitshistory,the ShrineofMontserrathas beenattackedbyenemiesof theChurchandmanyofits treasuresstolen.

DuringtheSpanishCivil Waronlyafewyearsago,theCommuniststriedto destroytheshrine.They brokeinandsolealittle blackstatue,andwithgreat noisecarrieditoutand burnedit.

Theimportanceofthe conventionwouldthusbe readilyappreciatedandthe necessityforallbranchesto bepresentedadequatelyat thismeetingshouldneed littleemphasis. Thecarryingoutofthis policywasnotpossible withoutthereadyco-operationofbranchesandindividualmembers,however zealousexecutivemembers mightbeinthedischargeof theirduties.

Butthesespeculations arecutshortbytheCommunistvolte-faceoverAustria.Foroveradecade Russiahasfrustratedall Westernendeavourstoend theoccupationofAustria andbringaboutanAustriansettlement.

Lessthan12monthsago, whentheParisagreements

IntheSovietvocabulary Austrian"neutrality"and "neutralisation"areidenticalterms.Thetraditional meaningof"neutrality"impliesindependenceanda righttoabandonneutrality, suchasSwedenexercisedin thelastwar;"neutralisation"meansthesurrender ofindependencetoother powersactingasguarantorsofthatneutralisation.

Theimportanceofthe AustrianStateTreatyfor theSovietUnionisthat Austriaisintendedtoform asectioninthatgreatbelt ofneutralorneutralising centreswhichtheSoviet wantsinanuninterrupted chainfromScandanaviato theMediterranean,thus hinderingtheWestinbuildingupitsplanneddefences, inEuropeorelsewhere.

Itisnowsixyearssince thefirstGermanGovernmentafterthewarwas formed,andonthatoccasionDr.Adenauerwas electedChancellorbyamajorityonlyofone.

ItisintheGermantraditionthatpoliticallythe Germansneedastrongman, andDr.Adenauerfillsthat rolebutnotasaninheritancefromBismarck,which in1914andagainin1939 broughtsuchbitterconsequencesforEuropeandfor Germanyitself.

In1950theKoreanWar openedtheireyestothe dangerthreateningfrom Sovietaggression.Itwas thenthataplanforaGermancontributiontoWestern defencewasfirstheardof. Butin1950,WesternGermanywas,psychologically, inacriticalstate.

IftheKoreanWarhad extended,itseemeddoubtfuliftheAmericanscould havemaintainedtheir troopsinGermany,whilst thatcriticaltimewaschosenbytheEastGermanpuppetGovernmenttoincrease politicalandmilitarypressure.

Onthefaceofthingsa GermanKoreaseemeda. distinctpossibility,andthe WesternPowerswerespurredtoactionandissued theirdeclarationinSeptemberofthatyearpromisingsupportfortheWest GermanFederalRepublic andBerlinincaseofa Sovietattack.

Afewmonthslater,at theBrusselsmeetingofthe AtlanticCouncil,itwas agreedthatWesternGermanyshouldsomehowbe linkedwiththeWestern DefenceSystem.

Aftermanydelays,includingtheFrenchrejectionofE.D.C.,agreement wasatlastreachedearlyin 1955throughtheParis TreatiesandGermany'sadmissiontoNATOandthe WesternEuropeanUnion.

TheChinese,therefore, foundthemselvesinthe dilemmaofbeingchallengedtoattackAmericanwarshipsratherthanmerelya foreignterritorywhich Americahasguaranteed.

EveninJapan,where Americahasbeentheoccupyingpowersincetheend ofthewar,therehadbeen ominoussignsofadesire tomoveoutoftheWestern camp,andtogainfavour withthetotalitarianpowers,andtheAmericanshave thisaddedresponsibility, whichspringsfromthe feelingthroughouttheEast thattheCommunistcause wasontheroadtovictory.

SincetheAmericanstand overFormosaintheearly monthsoftheyear,an ominousquiethasdescendedoverAsiawhichcanonly beexplainedbySoviet manoeuvringinEurope. TheprizeinEuropeisGermany,thecaptureofwhich bywhatevermeans,would meanaSoviethegemony overallEurope.

Thatwouldleavethe Chinesefreetoexpandfarther,andifthereareany doubtsabouttherealityof thepartnershipbetween CommunistChinaand SovietRussia,Molotov's speechimmediatelyafter Malenkov'sresignationlast February,shoulddispel them.

Mao-tse-tungisnotprovingtobeanAsianvariant ofTito,thoughforgeographicalreasonsheisable toenjoytheluxuryofan independentpolicy.

Thegreatandgrimrealitywhichoverhungthe Bangkokconferenceofthe SEATOnationslastFebruarywasthatthelatestcensustakeninCommunist Chinarevealedapopulation of600,000.000people;that

MOLOTOV obstructionist weresubstitutedforE.D.C. afteritsdefeatintheFrench Assembly,Molotovwassayingthattheratificationof theformerwouldmakean Austriansettlementimpossible.

LastMayanextraordinaryreversaloffrontswas shownbytheSovietover theAustrianissue.Allthe objectionswhichtheRussianshadpreviouslyput forwardagainsttheAustrianTreatyweredropped asiftheywereofnoconsequence.

Theseincludedsuchintricateproblemsasthe ownershipofformerGermanproperties;thealleged threatofanewGerman Auschluss;thequestionof Austria'sresponsibilityfor fightingonHitler'sside.

Thatisnottosaythat Austriaextricatedherself easilyfromtheoccupation, becausefromtheeconomic provisionsoftheTreatyit isclearthatalltheSoviet concessionswillbemore thancompensatedbythe obligationwhichAustria hastakenuponherselfin regardtotheSovietUnion, andtheyareformidable burdensfortheAustrian economy.

Onthecreditsideofthe treatyisthefactthatthe totalvalueoftherestored

Adenauer'srolehasbeen allalongtokeepGermany notagainstEurope,butin Europe,andhiseffortsin thepastsixyearshaveresultedinacoalescenceof

Nobodyknowsbetter thanDr.Adenauerthatthe SovietUniononlyrespects strength,andhisanxietyall alonghasbeentoseeWesternGermanyinsideE.D.C., andafterthatwasturned downbytheFrenchAssembly,insideNATO. ButlastJanuary,andbeforetheParisTreatywas ratifiedbytheFrenchAssembly,acleverpropaganda movecamefromtheSoviet intheformofanote,likely topleasemanyGermans:' offeringtheresumptionof diplomaticrelationsbetween theSovietUnionandthe WestGermanFederalRepublicaswellas"free" electionsunderinternationalcontrolasaconditionof Germanreunification.

ADENAUER tokeep GermanyinEurope WesternandGermanpolicies. In1946thecoldwar cameintoexistence,becauseitwasthenthatthe WesternPowersbeganto realisewhattheRussian interpretationoftheYalta Agreementwas.In1948 theBerlinblockadedemonstratedtotheWestern Powersthekindofstrength whichopposedthem.

TheSovietnotewasfollowedalmostimmediately byadecreefromtheRussianGovernmentending thestateofwarwithGer-4 many-fouryearsafter Britain,theU.S.A.and Francehadformallymade thatdecisionthemselves, anditwouldbeveryeasy tovisualiseapictureof whatwouldhavehappened toGermanyiftheyhad waitedforSovietRussiain thismatterandothers.

TheSovietGovernment knowsperfectlywellthat withoutGermanytherecan benoEuropeanpolicy,and noEuropeaninstitutions, andthat,andnotthepretendedargumentofWest Germanmilitarisation,is whyithas,beforethesigningoftheParisagreements inApril,gonealloutto mobilisepublicopinionin theWesternWorldagainst thenewEuropeanAlliance.

NobodyintheWestern worldwasundulyalarmed attheRussianthreatsto retaliatebyforcingaheavilyarmedEasternalliance, becausethathadbeenin existenceforsometime,and ismoreheavilyarmed thanNATO.

Whatisdisquieting,however,forDr.Adenauer,and indeedforallloversof Germanunity,istheattitudeofthe"reunificationists"withinGermanyitself. Theircasewasthatreunification,regardlessofits practicability,hasbecome thealternativetotheParis Treaties.

tacitrecognitionbyWest GermanyoftheEastGerman puppetCommunistregime, whichinturncouldimply abetrayalofthe18million Germansunderthatregime.

Thequestionofeconomic relationswasdesignedto attractWestGermanindustrialistsandbusinessmen thinkingoftheirlostEasternmarkets.Inhispolitical careerthis79-year-old Chancellorhasnotperhaps beencalledontomakea moredifficultmove,and apartfromthetermsofthe invitation,whichwasconfinedtothreefairlysubordinatetopics:therestoration ofdiplomatic,economic, andculturalrelations,his chiefpurposemusthave beentoclarifytheSoviet attitudetoGermanreunification. Hisdilemmaissimply stated:hecouldnotaccept theSovietaspectofreunification,andhealsohad toresistanySovieteffortco makehimresponsible,beforeGermaneyes,forthe continuationofaGermany splitintwo.

AfterthedefeatofE.D.C. intheFrenchAssembly theyarguedthatWestern Germany'snewly-wonsovereigntyrequiredanindependentforeignpolicy,and thatthepolicyofloyaltyto theWestmustbesacrificed totheurgentneedsofGermannationalinterests.

Supportfortheseviews werenotwantinginBritainandFrance,andthere werealsothepsychological effectsoftheimpending Sovietwithdrawalfrom Austria,andofanappar-entlysofteningattitudeof SovietRussia.

Reunificationwasthus broughttotheforefrontas amajorpsychologicaland politicalissue,andit broughttogetherformer Nazis,GermanNationalists, advocatesofanotherRapallo,intellectuals,industrialists,SocialistsandCommunists.

Itistruethataminority canfocussufficientattentionontheirviewssoasto gainthesupportofeditorialistsandradiocommentators,buttheaverageGermanisnotinterested.He wantssecurityonly,andin Dr!Adenauerhehasimplicittrust.

Itwasashocktothe "reunificationists"whenon June7last,theGerman ChancellorreceivedaninvitationtoMoscow.Once again,theKremlinhadcallouslyembarrasseditssupportersandfellow-'travellers.

aticsuddenness,Malenkov vacatedtheofficeofPrime Minister,andChairmanof theCouncilofMinistersin theSovietUnion.Hewas succeededbyMarshalBulganin.Buttherealpowerin SovietRussiaistheparty secretary,Krushchev,and ithasonlyrequiredthe twoyearssinceStalin's deathforKrushchevtopush himselffromnumberseven inthepartyhierarchyto

tobecomethe"supreme boss"towhichhemust aspireifheistobeanother Stalin.Inthatperiodof "processing,"hemustsooner orlaterclashwithothers commandingimportantpositions-justasheclashed withanddestroyedBeria, thepoliceboss,andlater reducedMalenkov,thegovernmentboss,toutterinsignificanceandimpotence.

Thestruggleforpowerin Moscowmustcontinueuntil onemanemergeswhois strongenoughbothtoliquidatehisopponentsandto getholdofandcontrolall theswitch-boardsinthat mostintricatestructure.

Noonecanforetell whetherKrushchevwill reachthatpositionornot, but,ashisaimistobeanotherStalin,aclashseems inevitablebetweenthe partycaucuswhichhepersonifies,andthemachinery ofthearmedforcescontrolledbythemarshals.

Inotherwords,Zhukov, andmenlikehim,area potentialdangertotheparty caucus.

Cologne,ofwhichDr. Adenauerwasmayorbefore hecameintotheworld limelight,wasoneofthe greatcitiesoftheFirst Reich,andonlyknew sufferingbecauseitwas dominatedbyPrussia. Twiceinthepast41years hehasseenGermanytake thewrongdecision,andon bothoccasionsdragging herselfandEuropetothe vergeoftheabyss. In1917shesentLenin backintoRussiatodemoralisetheRussianarmies, andthushelpedtoestablish Bolshevism.Hitler'sfolly in1939pavedthewayfor theSoviethegemonyof Europein1945.

Germanyisnowconfrontedwithathirdchoice whichissimplystated:freedomthroughtheWestern alliancewhichkeepsthe dooropenforre-unification, or,arashacceptanceof "nationalunity"aspropoundedbySovietRussia.

Dr.Andenaueriswell awarethatifGermany makesathirdfalsestep therewillnotbeanyfree powerslefttosaveherfrom theconsequencesofher folly,astheywerepartly abletosaveherin1945.

OnSunday,October23, thepeopleoftheSaarrejectedtheplebisciteforthe

KRUSHCHEV realpowerinRussia numberoneattheexpense ofStalin'sprotege,Malenkov. Thechangeofofficewas aclashofmen,andthe strongerandmoreruthless prevailed.Malenkovaccepted"guiltandresponsibility" foranagriculturalpolicy whichhadnotbeenhisat all,butthatofKrushchev, whosepowerwasconsolidated.

Krushchevalsolaidbare Malenkov's"newcourse" withitsemphasisonthe productionofmoreconsumergoods,anditscomparativeneglectofheavy industry,andclasseditas "sheerdeviation,thatmust cometoanendforthwith."

Therecanbenoquestion nowoftheascendancyof thepartyoverthenation, oftherealideologyoverthe trappingsofWesterndemocracy(Malenkov's"new course").

Krushchevistheheirof Stalin-andStalinwasthe greatpurgerwhomadeand unmadetheholdersofother offices.ItiswhatKrushchevsaysthatmatters,and hedoesnottalkabout peacefulco-existence,or moreconsumergoodsforthe masses.

DuringtheMalenkov periodMoscowhaslaid muchstressonpeacefulcoexistence,andtogivethis policysomesortofappeal allsortsofminorconcessionsweremade-thereleaseofforeignersfrom camps;greaterfreedomof movementwasgrantedto diplomatsandvisitors;sport andculturalrelationswith foreigncountrieswerepursuedwiththeutmostvigour.

Intheircontactswith Westerncountries,Soviet diplomatsalmostputthemselvesouttoappearreasonable,whichwasatremendouschangefromtheobstructiontacticsofMolotov andGromykooverthepast tenyears.Butithascost Moscowtheinitiativeinthe coldwar.

ItisrumouredthatduringhisvisittoChinain October,1954,Krushchev hadintimatetalksonpolicy withtheChineseleaders. Hewasaccompaniedby Bulganinandothers.

TITO waswooed thewooingofTito-theinvitationtoDr.Adenauerto visitMoscow-theSoviet acceptanceoftheWestern invitationtothe"summit" meetinginGenevabetween theheadsofStates-and nowtheabortiveGeneva ConferenceoftheForeign Ministers,withMolotov backagainafteraperiodof partialeclipse,athisold gameofobstruction.

whichisthesamethingas thewithdrawalofAmerican forcesfromEurope.

Theslogan"Europefor theEuropeans,Asiaforthe Asians"isapreciseexpressionofthepresent policyoftheSovietUnion, whichistopersuadethe Americanstowithdrawn uponthemselves,andthus assureSoviethegemonyin EuropeandChinesehegemonyinAsia.

InhisChristmasallocutionlastyeartheHoly Fatherquotedthepromise announcedintheMessianic prophecyofIsaias:"Behold, Iwillbringuponher,asit were,ariverofpeace,"and spokeofhisdesirethatthis samepromise"shouldresoundagainovertheentire humanfamily,asthewish ofourheartonthisChristmaseve."

Thewarwhichcameso soonafterhisaccessionto thethroneofSt.Peterin 1939,didnotbringthepeace whichthewholeworld wanted,but,instead,"there continuedthatagonising stateofuneasinessand dangercalledthe'coldwar' atrucethattrembledat theslightesttouch."

ItlooksasifKrushchev hasdecidedthatgreater risksmustbetakenin EuropeandinAsiatoregaintheinitiativeinthe coldwar,andthisismost disturbing,anddemandsa greatervigilanceinthe West.

Itisonlyamatterofa fewyearsbeforeChinawill bestrongenoughtopursue amuchmoreindependent policyinAsia,becauseshe willbelessdependenton Russianarmsandplanes.

The"coldwar"hasslowlybeenreplacedbyaperiod ofdecreasedtension,which "hasbeengiventhename ofthe'coldpeace' a provisionalcalm,whose durationisconditionalupon thechangeablesensationof fear Wedonotdare offerthe'coldpeace'tothe DivineInfant."

"Eachofthegroupsinto whichthehumanfamilyis dividedtoleratestheexistenceoftheotherbecauseit doesnotwishitselfto perish theyco-exist Itisnotastateofwar, butneitherisitpeace;itis a'coldcalm.'"

Theinvitationwasthe thirdvoltefacebythe SovietGovernmentinafew months,theothertwobeing therapidsettlementwith Austria,andtherehabilitationofTitoism.

Sincethecreationofthe FederalRepublic,Dr.Adenauerhashadthequestionablehonourofbeingtarget l` numberoneinSovietpropaganda-"Thehenchman oftheAmericanaggressors," and"theinstrumentofthe Vatican,"andworse.

Thereismorerespectin Moscow forsuccessful enemiesthanforunsuccessfulfriends,andtheinvitationwasanacknowledgmentofthepositionof strengthwhichDr.Adenauerhasachievedbecause ofhispolicy.

Solongasitwaspossible topreventtheratification oftheParisAgreementsthe Sovietrefusedtotalkabout theGermanquestion,orrefusedtonegotiatewithDr. Adenauer.Butnowthat theParisagreementshave beenratified,theoldtechniquehasbeendiscarded, ei anddifferentmethodshave becomenecessary.

Theinvitation,however, cannotdisguisethereal purposeofSovietpolicy, whichremainswhatitwas: todivideandbreakthe Westernalliances. Itisnowclearthatthe purposeoftheinvitation wastotrapDr.Adenauer sothathisstaturein WesternGermanywouldbe lowered.Anagreementto resumediplomaticrelations withSovietRussiacould implynothinglessthana

hisagreementfailed Europeanisationofthat territory.Theagreement reachedbetweenM. Mendes-FranceandDr. Adenauerlastyearhas thereforefailed,andthe Saarproblemoncemore confrontsEurope,andcould veryeasilydisruptEuropeanunity.

Thelackofrestraintin Germannationalistdemands canonlyexacerbatethe French,andcausedisquiet intheWesternworld,whicn isquitepreparedtowelcomeaEuropean-minded, butnotanationalist-minded Germanyinsideitsdefence system.

Themostdisquietingpart oftheplebisciteistheopportunityitpresentsthe SovietandtheEastGerman puppetregimeofpressing theirplansfor"re-unification"and"free"elections underinternationalcontrol.

Fortheshortperiodof "collectiveleadership"has disappeared-butnotbefore ithadbeguntoclogthevast andcomplicatedpower machinesolaboriouslybuilt upbyStalin-andthe powermachinestillneeds adictator,andnotan oligarchicgroupofmen underthenameof"collectiveleadership."Itisclear thatKrushchevhasbeen "conditioning"himselffor thereshufflethatreached thefirststageofitshigh pointlastFebruaryinMoscow.

Andlookingdownonthe statuesofChristandHis festivalscene,saintsand Mother,foreshortenedby theirelevatedposition,stand onstoneprojectingbracketswithredlampsburningbeforethem.

Butthenever-to-be-forgottenpartofChristmasin Maltaisherbells.Perhaps itistheMediterraneanthat siftsthesoundwithits waves,perhapsitistheabsenceoftreesinanygreat quantityontheisland,or perhapsitisthenarrow street, miradores,withtheSpanish orprojecting windows,butthebellsin Maltahaveanechoingsymphonicqualitythatascends asagreatpaeanofpraiseto heaven,envelopingthe islandasitwereinvocal prayer.

HisExcellencytheGovernor(SirCharlesGairdner)waspresentforthe RequiemMass. Aftertheabsolution,the deceasedwasburiedinthe groundsofClontarf.

TheCommonwealthMinisterofMigration(Mr. Holt)sentaletterofsympathyandhadarepresentativeatthefuneralMass. TheStatePremier(Mr. Hawke)likewiseconveyed hissympathy.
