O'Haganwasassistedby hisaccompanist,HalStead, buttheshowwasreally stolenbytheboysofSt. Mary'sCathedralChoir, whomadetwoappearances. Theapplausethatgreeted theirfinalnumber,''The *HappyWanderer,"rocked thetheatre,andcontinued untiltheirembarrassedconductor,FatherMcCudden, madeabriefappearanceto apologisefortheabsenceof anencorenumber.

TheChristianChristmas committeeformedofa numberofclergymenfrom differentdenominationsexpressessatisfactionatthe verypracticalinterestbeing showninitscampaignto putChristbackintoChristmas.

TheRev.J.Depiazzi, chairmanofthecommittee. saidthatco-operationwas beinggivenbyradio,press andtheatrepublicityagencies.

Patrick,O'Haganhasjust returnedfromatourofNew Zealand,andhewasreally intopform.Ihaveseldom seenanartistwithsuchan easymanneronstage,and neveronewithsucha wonderfullineof"blarney" togowithit.

Ashehasthesame pleasantandfriendlydispositionoffstageason stage,Ifeelsafeinsaying thatthereasonforPatrick's success,quiteapartfromhis artistry,ishisobvioussincerityandhisdelightin takinghislistenersalong withhim.

Anumberofposters werebeingplacedinbuses andtramsandtwolarge displayshadbeenarranged bycourtesyoftheRailways' advertisingagencyontwo suburbanstations. theywouldhavecheerfully

apleasure,andAustralian audienceswillmissthe weeklybroadcaststhathave madehimsuchapopular personalityoverthepast year. Therecanbenodoubt thattheconcertsprogrammedfornextSunday eveningandthefollowing MondayandTuesdaywill beasheavilybookedaslast Sunday'swas,asthisisthe lastopportunityhismany admirerswillhaveofhearingtheIrishtenorbeforehe leavestheshoresofAustraliaforatourofAmerica.

LostSundaywasaveryprouddayfortheparishofSt.Augustine,Rivervale,whenanewchurchandpresbyterywereopened andblessedbyHisLordship,MostRev.J.J.Rafferty,D.D.,inthe presenceofover500people.

InwelcomingHisLordship,theparishpriest,Rev. F.Regan,expressedbothhis pleasureandthankstohim forhispresencewiththen onthathappyoccasion.

Healsowelcomedthe manyclergy,thechairman oftheBelmontRoadBoard (Mr.FrankWilson),the representativeoftheward (Mr.PaddyFaulkner)and alltheothervisitorswho hadcometosharetheirjoy onthatgreatday.

FatherReganhada specialwordofgratitude forHisGracetheArchbishop,towhoseencouragementandhelptheywereall sodeeplyindebted.

Intracingthehistoryof theparish,hespokeappreciativelyofthepriestsand peoplewhohadsowelllaid thefoundationsonwhich theywerenowbuilding.

Finally,hecongratulated Mr.StanCostello,thedesignerandbuilder,onthe excellentjobhehaddone.

HisLordshipthanked 4FatherReganforhiswords ofwelcomeandsaidhefelt greatlyprivilegedtohave beendelegatedbyHisGrace toblessandopenthenew churchandpresbytery.

Herecalledthatitwas notsolongsincethethen sparselypopulateddistrict ofRivervalewasanoutpost oftheparishofBelmont *

whichhadtobesatisfied withSundayMassinthe Stateschool.

Then,asthedistrictgrew, theformerparishpriestof Belmont,FatherAhern,and hiscomparativelyfew peoplehadundertakenthe nonetooeasytaskoferectingthechurch-school.

Itwasahumblebuilding butthepeoplewerevery proudofit.Atlastthey hadabuildingoftheirown withdignifiedprovisionfor thecelebrationoftheHoly Mysteriesandadequate provisionfortheeducation oftheirchildrenbythe SistersofMercywhoso kindlyprovidedastaffto undertakethatimportant work.

InGod'sgoodtimedevelopmentofthedistrict wassuchastowarrantthe erectionofRivervaleasa parishinitsownright,and theappointmentofthefirst parishpriest,FatherRegan.

"Iwanttocongratulate you,FatherRegan,onyour courageandinitiative.You haveundertakenalarge debt,butyouhavedoneso intheknowledge,proved byexperience,thatyou havebehindyouasolid bodyofloyalandgenerous parishionersuponwhose self-sacrificingco-operation youcandependatall times."

FirstMother-GeneralOfThe MercySistersIsMourned

OnNovember28Godcalledtoher heavenlyrewardMotherMaryBrigidMcDonald,thefirstMotherGeneralofthe SistersofMercy,VictoriaSquare.

Leavingherfamily-a distinguishedoneinCounty Tyrone-in1898,Mother Brigidenteredthenovitiate ofVictoriaSquare,where heroutstandingqualities werequicklyrecognised, aboveallherserenityand strengthofcharacterthat laterdevelopedthosereservesofpowerthatshowedherasonesetasideby Godtodogreatthingsfor Him.

Soonafterherprofession in1901,MotherBrigidwas appointedNovice-Mistress. Althoughshewassoyoung, herrefinedanddeeplyreligiousspiritinfluencedher chargesandmouldedthem onlinesthatdistinguish themastrueSistersof Mercy,spiritual,refinedand eagertoworkforChrist.

Herinfluenceintheclassroomwasequallygreat,and OurLady'sCollege,Victoria-sq.,owestohermuch ofthesuccessthathasgaineditsoexcellentareputation.ForMotherBrigid's interestswerewide.

Asprincipalofthecollege shedidmuchtosecurethe highstandardinarts. sciences,music,etc.,that distinguishit.Herlovefor learningwassuchthatshe urgedeverygirlinhercare toreachthehighestlevelof herpossibilities.Andmany isthepupilsheassistedto fitherselfforherchosen life-work.

AsSuperioressoftheSistersofMercy,MotherBrigid sawtheamalgamationof theoriginalfoundation housesatYork,Toodyay andMidlandJunction,of Bunbury,VictoriaParkand Coolgardie.

AsSuperioressand,in lateryears,asMother General,shewasinstrumentalinestablishingthe FoundlingHome,Subiaco,

in1914,St.Anne'sNursing Home,Mt.Lawley,in1937, andSantaMariaCollege, Attadale,in1938,inaddition tonumeroussmallconvents andschools.

Whenhergoldenjubilee wascelebratedquietlyon September24,1951,Mother Brigidwasalreadyaninvalid,whomGodhadseen fittosubmittoalongand wearyingillness.

DevotedLife

Thosewhoknewand lovedherrealisedthatthis wasGod'sdesigntosanctify herhereandprepareher foraspeedyentranceinto heaven.Wefellthathers was,intruth,asaintly deaththatendedahighly sanctifiedlife.

Herreligiousmottowas "ToJesusthroughMary." Andherwholelifewas spentinleadingsoulsto Godundertheprotectionof HisMother.

Herfuneralobsequies wereafittingtributetoa noble,humbleandrefined nun,whohadspentherself inGod'svineyard.

HisGraceArchbishop Prendivillepresidedather RequiemMass,atwhich50 priestsandalargenumber ofreligiousandfriendswere present.Theseincluded manyofherpastpupilswho owedtohertheirhappine,s inlife.

Overonehundredwere presentatthegraveside. Manyexpressionsofsympathywerereceived,inparticularfromalife-long friendofMotherBrigid,Dr. L.J.Goody,BishopofBunbury,whowasunabletobe present.

MotherMaryBrigid'sdeathwasthethird bereavementthatthecommunityhassufferedinrecentmonths,whentwo nobleanddeeplyreligious

PupilsoftheDeLaSalle regionalschoolatMidland Junctionstagedalively concertatMidlandTown HallonDecember7.

Itwastheirsecondannualdisplayofvarietyand songsincethefoundingof theschoolin1953.

Leadingcitizenspresent includedMr.J.Brady, M.L.A.forthedistrict,Mr. W.S.Doney,Midland'snew Mayorandtheirwivesand anumberofclergyand sisters.

Ahighlightoftheeveningwasaduet,Kerstliederen,renderedbyDutchiesCeesBosandRudolf Bankintheirmotherlanguage.

PaulSt.Johnshowed thathepossessedamarathonmemorywhenhegave theaudienceanaccountof LevinskyattheWedding,a humorousmonologuewhichconvulsedthemwithlaughter.

Threeplayletteswereenjoyedduringtheevening;

onebeinganoutstanding murdercasecompletewith corpse,omniscientdetective andaconvincingslayer.

Luckily,aslipbyAndy PudovskisclearedBrian Dockerandconvictedhimself.PaulSt.John,assistedbyConstableJimNally, ledhimawaytogaol.

TheChristmasmotifwas beautifullycarriedoutby PeterRyaninTheChildon HisKnees,averseprayer toOurLady.

But,despiteanimpressive displayofgymnastics,choirs fromthevariousclasses,recitationsandplaylettes, nothingcomparedwiththe finalitem.

ThiswastheNativity Scenewhenthescholars filledthestagecladinancientandmoderncostumesofallnationsand crafts,boundforacommon goal.

HeretheOblateswere stronglyestablishedwith threebishopsandsomehalf amillionCatholicsentrustedtotheircharge.

TheOblateshadserved thesepeopleforabout100 yearsandinthisageof new-foundfreedomitwas comfortingtolearnthat therewasanativeclergy ableandpreparedtotake overthespiritualcareof thesefineCatholicpeople.

Thethreebishopswere allnativesandtheoutlook forthefaithwasencouragingtothosewhohaddevotedsomuchoftheirlives toitscareandcultivation amongstthesepeople.

DisembarkingatNaples, FatherHaughrelatedhow tosteponItaliansoilwas toappreciatethedeepculturalbackgroundofthe countryandthedepthof faithwhichinspiredits people.

Hetravelledbytrainto Romeandkeenlyawaited hisfirstglimpseofSt. Peter's.Asthetrainapproachedthecentralstation hesawfirstthespiresof thisinspiringedifice,the greatestmonumentraised bymantothehonourand gloryofGod.

St.Peter'sfrequentlydid notimpressthetouriston hisfirstvisit.Itwasbeyondhumanunderstanding togainavividimpression oftheimmensityofthe giantCathedral,tocometo anappreciationofitsunexcelledarchitecturalmarvelsorthemuralsand statueswhichenrichedits attractions.

TheCathedralcoveredan areaofsixacresandifthe sacristiesandannexeswere includeditoccupiedten acres.

Thegreatdomerose440 feetfromthegroundand itsdiameterwas137feet.

TheVaticanwastothe leftasthevisitorstoodon thestepsofSt.Peter'sand hereresidedtheVicarof

Christonearth,HisHolinessPopePiusXII,restored tobodilyhealthafterhis grievousillness.

Eachdaywhenhewasin residenceandhishealth permitted,HisHolinessappearedatawindowoverlookingtheSquareandgave thoseassembledhisblessing.

TotheItalianpeoplethe Popestoodsupremeandhis everyappearancewas greetedwithanenthusiasm whichhadtobeexperienced tobeunderstood.

FatherHaughrecounted experiencesinSt.Peter's whenheattendedabeatificationceremonyandofan audiencewithHisHoliness. Hespokeofothervisitsto bascilicasandchurchesin theHolyCityandofimpressionsformedfroma comparisonofthemellowedremainsofPaganRome anditsChristiancounterparts.

Luckily,however,a40tonbargewasobtained fromthegovernmentforthesumof£6000,butoncon- ditionthattheMissionof Kalumburuwouldusethat boattosupplythenewgov- ernmentlighthouseat ThroughtonIslandwith regularseatransport.

FatherParentesaidthat mysticalmanifestationssuch asthatexperiencedbyPopePiushavebeenafrequent occurrenceamongsaints andotherseversincethe Churchwasestablished.

"But,"headded,"the presentinstanceisunique becauseneverbeforehasa successorofSt.Peterrevealedapersonalexperienceofthiskind."

However,theywereall writtenaboutthattimeand containedmuchunreliable information.Laterbiographiesuptotheendof theninthcenturywerewrittenafterthedeathofthe Popes,butareofunequal value.

KindsOfVisions

BoththeOldandNew Testamentscontainnumerousaccountsofmiraculous visions,suchasthatofthe ArchangelRaphaelto Tobias,FatherParentesaid. Allvisions,hestated,are classifiedascorporeal,imaginativeorintellectual.

Inthecorporealvision, thereisarealperceptionby theexternalsense.In imaginativevisionsthereis anobjectiveperceptionby imaginationwithoutany outwardimpressiononthe organofsight.

Inintellectualvisions,the Divineactiondirectlyaffects theintellectwithoutany senseimage.Thesevarious distinctionsapplyalsoto locutions.

Whilethereisnorecord ofapparitionsofChristto otherPopesbesidesSt. PeterandPopePiusXII, FatherParentesaid,there aremanyinstancesofother celestialvisionsattributed toPopes.Some,hesaid, arerecordedinhistory, othersaresimplylegendary.

Amongthefirstgroup,he stated,isthecaseofSt. PiusV,whohadavisionof theBattleofLepantoin 1571whileitwastaking place.ThePopesawthe Christianfleettriumphover theTurks,andannounced thevictoryseveraldaysbeforethenewswasableto reachRome.

Christ'sreportedreply,he said,isfoundinSt.John's Gospelandarethewords spokenbyMarthatoMary atthehouseofLazarus.

POPEPLEADSWITHSPANISHYOUTH ANDMAKESNOAPOLOGY

OntheAppianWay,St. Peterissupposedtohave metwithOurLordbearing theCrossonHisshoulders andgoingtowardRome. "Domine,quovadis"(Lord, whereareYougoing?), Peterasked,onlytoreceive thereply:"Iwasgoingto Rometobecrucifiedagain foryou."ItwasthisapparitionthatcausedPeterto returntoRome,wherehe wasdestinedtobecrucified headdown.

HolyFatherextolledSpain's naturalbeauties.

"But,"HisHolinessadded,"SpainisfarmorebeautifulintheChristianvirtuesthatdistinguishher. inthepurityofhercustoms, theintegrityofherfamilies, herloyaltytotheChurch andinclingingfirmlyto thefaith,forwhichshe knowshowtodie.

Thefrontageofboth buildingsfaceGladstonerd. Thechurchwaserected atacostof£11,000,and thepresbyteryfor£4,750.

Specialfeaturesofthe churcharethetwofoot tapestrybrickdado,three hand-carvedaltarsand ahand-carvedaltarrails, wroughtirongatesandtiled floortothebaptistry,a beautifulbaptismalfont, andRomanstylestained glasswindows.

Aspaciouschoirgallery hasbeenprovidedatthe

rearofthechurchanda baldachinohasbeenerected overthealtar.

TheStationsoftheCross arefittedtohandcarved frames.

Twosidealtarshavebeen provided,overoneofwhich isastatueoftheSacred Heart,andovertheother astatueofOurBlessed Lady.Bothstatuesareset innichesinthewall.

Thepewsareconstructed ofAloeswoodandthree havebeenplacedinthe choirgalleryforusebythe choir.

Thewallsabovethedado inthenaveofthechurch havebeentreatedinasoft pastelgreenwhilethesanctuarywallsarefinishedin paleblue.

Steelsafeshavebeenbuilt intothesacristyandbaptistry.Acoustictilesarea featureoftheceilingand havebeenfixedbetween theplasterbeamscovering steelrooftrusses.
