Theecclesiasticalauthoritieshavepronouncedas miraculousthecurein 1950fromAddison's diseaseofayoungAustriandancer,Edeltraut Fulda,whileonpilgrimagetoLourdes. MissFuldahadforyears sufferedfromcomplications occasionedbythedisease andhadbeenkeptalive onlybyreceivinglarge dosesofhormones. Herhealthwasdescribed bydoctors,givingevidence atthemedicalenquiryinto thecure,as"astateofalmostpersistentcrisis."

Yousee,youcouldnot fakethis.Itisbeyondthe "artoftheatre,"although thatisthereinfullmeasure.Therearetoomany indefinablesandthelackof anyoneofthemwouldsoon befeltevenifitwerenot obviouslyapparent.

TheAustrianfolksongs, sobeautiful,andsomeof themsofulloffun,had theirownstrangelymoving qualityfortheyweresung withaloveofhomeland whichexilecouldnotdim, northe"newworld"corrupt. But,ofcourse,asone wouldexpect,therealspirit oftheTrappfamily,inall itsdeepdevotion,cameout inchurchmusic.

Inappreciatingthework oftheTrappFamilySingers Istartedwiththeadvantageofknowingtheirbackgroundandsniritofapproach. Thiscouldalsohavebeen adisadvantageand,before theirfirstconcert,Iwarnedmyselfthat-asacritic -Iwouldhavetobecarefulnottoreadintotheir performancessomething thatIwantedtofindbut whichpossiblywouldnotbe thereinthemeasurethat itshouldbeforrenderings whichcouldbejudgedon thestandardsofhighinternationalartistry.

Thefirstfiveminutesof theirfirstconcertswept awayallfearsonthatscore. IfoundallthatIhadexpected,allthatIhadhoped for,andinthefindingofit therewasdeepsatisfaction andgreatjoy.

Thetechniquehadallthe polishwhichlovingcare, sensitivity,andunceasing hardworkcouldgiveit.I knewthattherewouldbe norocksaheadintechnical waters. Allattentioncouldthen begiventostudyingtheir powersofinterpretation. Andwhatpowersthey were!

Ifyouarelookingforan accountofSecretService activities,glamorousspies andunravellingofcode messagesyouwillbedisappointed.

ApartfromamostinterestingchapteronKlaus Fuchs,SirPercySillitoe hasloyallymaintainedthe oathofsecrecywhichwould naturallypreventhimfrom discussingtheworkof Britain'smostunpublicised body.

Butamanisnotinvited totakeoverthedirection ofsuchanorganisation unlesshehasarecordof outstandingachievementbehindhim,andtheauthor's accountofhislifeasa policeofficial,firstinSouth Africa,andlaterasChief ConstableinChesterfield, Sheffield,GlasgowandKent makesquitefascinating reading.

Theauthorisrovingcorrespondentforthe"Daily Express,"andthebookis publishedbythenewspaper chainMacCollrepresents.

Hisworld-widesyndicat- edarticleshaveappeared inthelocalpressfromtime totime,andhehasagood reputationasakeenobserverandanobjectivereporter. Heislittleconcerned withreligiouslifeinthe SovietRepublics,thoughhe doesreportwhatheactuallysawofreligiousobservance.Hisinterestis mainlycentredontheeconomicandsocialaspectsof lifebehindtheIronCurtain, andheshowsnobiasagainst Russia.

Itisforthisreasonthat Ithinkthisbookhasgreat value,becauseonthisparticulartopicobjectivereportinghasbeensadlylacking. Statisticsandfigurescan bemadetoproveanything. ReneMacCollisnotinterestedinstatisticsorfigures intheabstract.

Hemeasuresthevalueof theroubleagainstthegoods hepricedintheshopsof thecitieshevisited,andhis findingswillscotchagood dealofthepropaganda abouttheWorkers'Paradise.

Moreparticularly,hehas alotoftrenchantobservationstomakeabouttheattitudeofthemindofthe Russianpeoplehespoketo. Theirresponsesareinteresting;theirsilencesare oftenmoresignificant.

Thewritingiscrisp,to thepoint,withadry humourthatmusthavesavedtheauthormanyattacks ofapoplexyinthelandof theevasiveanswer.

Itisasnearup-to-theminute(1954)asapublishedbookcanbe,andIcan warmlyrecommenditto anyoneinterestedinthe

problemoflifeunderthe Communistregime.

Therewillbemanyreaderswhoneednointroductiontotheauthor,andto themIcanhonestlysaythat hislatestisbetterthan "DoctoratSea"andatleast asgoodas"Doctorinthe House."Myownpersonal opinionisthatthisishis bestsofar.

He wheretakesupthestory hisfirstbookleftoff, thenewly-qualifieddoctor startslookingforajob,and, hisfirstambitionbeingto becomeasurgeon,heis quitehappytoacceptan appointmentasjunioras- sistanttothecasualtyofficeratSt.Swithin's.

Theseniorassistantis, however,farmorewilythan he,andtheresultisthat, attheendoftheprobationaryperiod,theauthorfinds himselfscanningtheback pagesoftheBritishMedicalJournalwherevacanciesareadvertised.

Hisexperiencesbefore theinterviewingcommittees makehilariousreading,and thebookdevelopsintoa veritablerib-crackerwhen hefinallytakesupanap- pointmentasassistanttoa miserlyolddoctorinthe provinceswhohasmarried abarmaidwithamorous tendenciesanddesignson herhusband'sdrugcabinet.

Afterashortbutexciting stayinthisdifficultsituation,theauthormanagesto secureathreemonths'idyll asassistanttoasociety doctorwiththreeRolls Royces,andfinallylands backatSt.Swithin'swhere heagainrunsupagainstthe oilycustomerwhobeathim forhisfirstappointment.

Nowhereinthemission fieldistheresuchademand forlayhelpasinthePacific area.Thepeculiarcircumstancesofwarhavemade thisareaonewherethereis awidespreaddemandfor education.Priests,Sisters andBrothersnormallytake careoftheworkofeducationasthemissiondevelops, butintheyearssince1940, theChurchcannotmeetthe demands.

VolunteerTeachers

Educationhasbecomethe doorwhichisopeningand willopenthefaithfor thousandsuponthousands. Therefore,fromeveryPacificmissionthereisacryfor helpintheworkofeducation.Theanswer,ofcourse, isqualifiedlayteachers volunteeringforanumber ofyearsofservice.

Therearealreadyapproximatelyadozenqualifiedteachersworkinginthe Pacificarea,buttheneeds aremanytimesgreater.

HisLordshipDr.Foleyof SuvacalledattheNational Officeinvestigatingthepossibilitiesofobtaining11 qualifiedprimaryschool teachersatonce.Hewants someforestablishedschools inthelargercentres;he wantsothersforoutpost schools.Heisindesperate needofthreemaleteachers forboys'schools,whilsthe needswomenteachersfor thegirls'schools.

Somemightthinkthe difficultiesaretoogreat,but nonearetoogreattothe generousheartedperson whowishedtohaveashare intheworkofGod.So

Nationstoohaspromised thesepeopleasmuch.

Itisfitting,too,becauseofthedangerofconfusion oftheirrespectiveroles,thatleadersofCatholic Actionshouldnotbeattheheadofothersocioindustrialorsocio-politicalorganisationseven thoughtheselatterarenon-party.

OrganisationsofCatholicsfortheconcreteactuationofprinciplesinpolicies,programmes,legislations,institutions,etc.,workinthesphereofwhat iscommonlycalledthe"actionofCatholics"to distinguishitfromthatofCatholicAction.

The"actionofCatholics"inasmuchasitis propertotheCatholicintheprofessional,technical, industrial,legalorothersuchsphere,andengages hisprofessionalcompetence,ishispersonalresponsibility;butinasmuchasitisintrinsicallyrelated tothemoralorder,itcomesunderthecontrolofthe teachingauthorityoftheChurch-itistobenoted furthermorethatalthoughforinstanceaparticular policyorprogrammeisnotmorallybad,itmay nonethelesspresentanimprudent,less-befitting, unbalancedorincompleteapplicationofCatholic principles:undertheseaspectsalsoitwouldbe subjecttotheauthorityoftheChurch,whichhas therighttowatchover,toorientate,todirect,and tocorrectsuchapplicationsinasmuchastheyare notonlyopposedbutareprejudicialtothefull realisationofherdoctrinalormoralteaching.

Thisplanmustbedevelopedandgivenconcrete form.Insayingthisthereisnoimpliedcriticismof thesplendidworkbeingdonebydifferentapostolic groups:bytheTheresians,theLegionofMary,the CatholicEvidenceGuild,theCatholicActiongroups proper,forinstance,inthereligioussphere;bythe InstitutesofSocialStudiesandAdultEducation Centres,bytheCatholicActiongroupsthemselves, inthesocialsphere.Thesearealldoingmagnificent workandIcongratulatethemwholeheartedly.

Awordofpraisemustbegivenalsotothe EnquiryandGospelDiscussionmethodsinuse.I dowishtobeclearthatwhenIdeclarewemust enlargeandextendourscopethereisnointention todiminishtheappreciationduetothegroupsand methodsalreadyinexistence.Butitisafactthat despitetheexcellentworkofexistingorganisations thealarmingleakagefromthepracticeofreligion continuesifanythingtoincrease,whileontheother handthewidespreadapathyandignorancerelative tothesocialteachingofthePopesdoesnotgrow less.

Iwouldsuggestthatweshouldaimtoprovide theopportunityforathoroughgroundinginCatholic doctrineandsocialprinciplesforeveryCatholic capableoftakingadvantageofit.Toachievethis itwouldseemindispensablethatweestablish regionaleducationcentresforyouthandadults, offeringcoursesbothinreligiousdoctrineandthe socialsciences.Onesuchcentretoeverythreeor fourparisheswouldperhapssuffice.

Itwouldundoubtedlybeanexcellentthingifa studycentrecouldbeestablishedineachparish; however,suchaprojectwouldseematthemoment farbeyondourresourcesoflecturingpersonnel. Butifontheotherhandweshouldlimitourselves tobutafewcentres,themajorityofCatholics, humannaturebeingwhatitis,wouldnotbe attractedinlargenumbers.Henceitwouldseem bestthatatleastinthemetropolitanareacentres beestablishedontheregionalbasisthatIhave suggested,namelyonetoeverythreeorfour parishes.Insuchcircumstancesthereshouldnotbe anygreatdifficultytopersuadeparishionersto followthecourses.

Itgoeswithoutsayingthatthebestpractical lecturers,sacerdotal,religious,andlay,wouldneed tobechosenforthetask-lecturerscompetentnot onlyintheirprofessionalknowledge,butalsoskilled intheartofpedagogy.Nothingdissipatesinterest andgoodintentionsmorequicklythantalkersor lecturerswantinginpedagogicalprinciples.

Incoursesofthiskinditwouldbealmostessential tomakeavailabletypednotestothesefollowing thelectures.Sinceseveralpotentiallecturershave expresseddoubtsonthepossibilityofhavingthe timenecessarytopreparesuchnotes,itwouldseem atleastopportune,ifnotabsolutelyindispensable, thatsomecentralinstitutionbechargedwiththe compilationofadaptedandadequatedispensae: thesewouldproveatremendousassistanceinparticularforcountrycentres,andmightevenprovide thebasisofsomefutureexternalstudiesdepartmentofthesocialsciences.
