SincelastAugustVietminhviolationsofthis centralclauseofthearmisticeagreementhavebeen widespreadandcontinuous.Theyarenotaccidentalbutpartofanofficialpolicysimilartobutworse thanthoseadoptedinKorea.Murder,intimidationandendlessdelayshavebeenemployedtoprevent massmigrationfromNorthVietnam.Forifallwho wantedtogohadleftitwouldhavebeenverydamagingindeedtotheCommunistcause.Ithad tobepreventedatanycostandsubstantiallyithasbeenprevented.ButtheVietminhalonearenot to knownblame.TheCommissionhasignoredpublicly facts,hasbeenslowtoactonformalcomplaints,silentonthemajorityoftheviolationsand weakinitsfewpronouncements.FromRedPolandnothingelsewastobeexpected,butthegoodname ofCanadaandIndiaisatstake.Theirdelegates havemadeaverypoorshowing.
Asitstands,theprospectsforafreeelection throughoutVietnamareverydimindeed.The Northhasabout12imillionswhowillbecompelled tovotetheCommunistticketatperiloftheirlives. TheSouthhasbut10millionsandthereisno solidarityintheirranks.Havingmetandovercomeanarmyrevolt,fosteredifnotinitiatedbythe French,NgoDinhDiemnowhastofacetheprospect ofcivilwarwiththebanditforceswhichcontrola largesectionofthesouth.Hehashadnooppor- tunitytoestablishstability,order,landreformand democraticgovernmentasheaimedtodo.Inthat impasseanelectionheldnoworshortlyinVietnam wouldresultinaCommunistlandslide.Butsince theVietminhhaveflagrantlybrokenamajorpro- visionofthetruceagreement,thearmisticeisnull andvoid.

CardinalNewmanwould lookuponsuchaperson, andmoreparticularlyon theinstitutionthattrained him,asbeingutterlyillogical!
Theymightbeinclinedto defendthesaidstudentby sayingthatduringthose yearshisspiritoffaithand prayerhadincreased-he wasdociletotheteaching authorityoftheChurchand acceptedherdirectivesand preceptswithoutquestion; hewasdevoutandintenselyferventinprayerandfrequentlyreceivedtheSacraments.
Anacademicknowledge ofthefaithwouldbevery nicebutwasanunnecessaryluxurywhichtimedid notpermit.
Althoughtheymustconcedethatthespiritualhealth ofsuchastudentwasquite satisfactory,couldtheysay that commandment:hewasfulfillingChrist's "Thoushalt lovetheLord,ThyGodwith
thywholeheartandthy wholesoulandthywhole mind"(Matt.22:36)?
adoredTheyworshippedand Godwiththeirmind whentheyknewGodand stroveaccordingtotheir abilitytounderstandthe truthsHehadmadeknown tothem:"Eternallifeis knowingthee,theonlytrue God,andJesusChristwhom thouhassent"(Jn.18:3).
Surelyanadultmind couldnotbecontentwitha child'sknowledgeofthe truthsofreligion-those sacredtruthswhichhad cometothemfromGod, truthswhichshouldcontinuallyprovidethedriving forceandspiritualenergyof theirwholelives,thosetruthswhichweretheconditionofeternalsalvation.
Intellect,Backdrop
Truetheirapproachto theEternalTruthmustbe childlike,humbleandunsophisticated,buttheirsense ofbalanceandproportion toldthemthattheirreligiousknowledgeshould keeppacewiththeirmental development.
FaithwasagiftofGod.
Itdidnotdependon humanknowledgeforits efficacybutitwasfortified andbecamemoreofaper- sonalconvictionifithadan intellectualbackdrop,so muchsothatinamature mind,faithwithoutthat reasonedfoundationquickly degeneratedintoafeeble sentimentandemotion whichwasincapableofgiv-inganystimulustotheir dailylife.Thosepeoplepreservedtheirfaithonly becausetheydidn'tthink aboutit!

Thereweremanyreasons whichshouldarouseinthem alladesireforreligious knowledgeatatertiarylevel andFatherChallisurged themtotakeadvantageof allthefacilitiesforreligious developmentprovidedfor thembytheirsociety.In particularheenlargedon themotiveswhichshould drivestudentsoftheexperimentalsciencestoa studyofthetruthsofthe ChristianRevelation.
Theywereallawareof thegreatprestigeofscience inmodernuniversities.The applicationsofphysical sciencehadraisedthe materialstandardsofliving,andtheywereassuredthatnuclearsciencewould raisethosestandardsstill higher;theimmediateresultwasthatmoreand moreofthefinancialresourcesofuniversitieswere beingusedinthedevelopmentofthesciencefaculties.
Moreimportant,however, wasthefactthatthescientificmethod(progressingby symbolisticinterpretationfromtheobservationof factstolawsandthenceto theories)thatexperimentalmethodhadbeensosuccessfulinmeasuringandcontrollingthepowersand energyofthematerialuniverse,thatmanypeople hadcometoregardthe scientificmethodofinductionastheonlyvalidversionofrationalthought,and theresultwasthatmore andmoretheintellectual resourcesoftheuniversities -thebestbrainsandtalent -werebeingdivertedinto thesphereofscientificresearch.

Theprestigeofscience waswellmerited!They mustremember,however, andscientistsmustremember,thatthenaturalscienceswereonlypartofthe vastfieldofhumanknowledge;therewerehigherlevelsofknowledge,notablyphilosophyandreligion;thosewereequally asvalidasscience,andit wasthosehigherformsof knowledgewhichpointed outtoscienceitspurposeandfunctionandwiththat guidancesciencewasable tomakeitsproperandworthwhilecontributionto theperfectionofhumanlife.
Withoutthatintegrationanddirectionnaturalscience becamearuthlessmasterof mensweepingawaythe truehumanvaluesinlife andunderitsdomination our intouniversitiesdegenerated stitutesvasttechnologicalinandpracticallaboratories.
Therewasgreatconfusion andmisunderstandingbetweenscienceontheone handandphilosophyand theologyontheother-the integrationofthosethree greatplanesofknowledge wasthepressingintellectual problemofmodernuniversitiesandoftheiruniversity today.
Duringthecourseofthe lastfewmonthsCastledare Boys'Homehasbeenwithouttheservicesofacommunityofnuns.Despitean Australianwideappeal,the Brothershavebeenunable toobtainsubstitutesforthe nuns,who,owingtofewnessofnumbers,were forcedtovacatetheorphanage.
Inthecourseofthese monthstheBrothershave beenbesetwithmanydifficulties,andifithadnot

Ifstudentsofscience wouldreflectseriouslyon theintellectualcontentof theirChristianfaithand workfortheco-ordination ofscienceandrevelation theywoulddoaserviceto scienceandtoreligion,a servicetotheiruniversityandtocivilisation.

Thatyear,morethanever before,withthefunctioning ofSt.ThomasMoreCollege thelightofChristwould shinebrightlyintheUniversityandinsucceedingyearswhenthebeautiful chapelwasbuilt,theEaster Candlewouldgiveforthits lightasavividsymbolof thelivingChristtheLight andTruthoftheUniversity.
