Theoccasionwastheannualconsecrationceremony orAciesofLegionaries (activeandauxiliary)attachedtothePerthComitiumofthisnowworldwideorganisation.
ThenaveofSt.Mary's Cathedralpresentedanimpressivesightasthelong processionmovedtoand fromthealtar.

ReasonsForLove
Toderivethebenefitof Hislovetheymustrealise thattheMasswas,firstof allasermonpreachedto thembynoneotherthan JesusChristHimself,and secondly,thatitwasthe sourceofgraceenabling themtohearthatsermon withprofit.
Forthosetworeasons theyshouldlovetheMass andrecogniseinitthe meansofdevelopingin themselvesthemindthat wasalsoinChristJesus.

Iseenopossibilityatthe presenttimeofarapprochementbetweenChristianity andCommunism.There mayatsomefuturetimebe arapprochementbetween ChristianityandCommunists.Butitwillonlycome afterCommunistsnolonger lookuponMarxismasa full-fledgedsubstitutefor religion.
AnyunderstandingbetweentheRedsandChristianitymustawaitthetime whentheyarecontentto lookuponCommunismas onlyaneconomicandsocial systemandstoppretending thatitisareligion.
ThedecreeofNikita KhrushchevoflastNovemberhasbeenmisinterpreted bymanyasindicatinga let-upinanti-religiouspropaganda.Acarefulstudy ofthedecreewillshowthat theoppositeistrue.
Khrushchev,whoisfirst secretaryoftheCommunist Party-thekeypowerpost intheSovietUnion-actuallycalledforanincrease inHisanti-religiouspropaganda. pointwasnotthat therewastoomuchantireligious.propaganda,.but ratherthatitwasproving ineffective.Hecalledforan endtoridiculeofreligion andaskedthatthepropa- gandabeplacedonamore convincingscientificbasis.

Ihavefrequentlybeen askedwhethertherecent accenton pagandaanti-religiousprointheSovietUnion indicatesa revival.genuinereligious Icannotsaythat I knowledgehavepositivepersonal ofsucharevival. Butitispermissibleto drawthefollowingconclusion: inpromotions. IfapropagandacamTheirchildrencouldnotpaignissuddenlyIntensified joinsuchorganisationsasorchanged,asafeassump- theKomosol,theyouthsec-LionisthattheformercamtionoftheCommunistpaignprovedafailure.And Party,etc.Khrushchevde-theRussianofficialswill claredthisanerrorbecauseadmitthatIthasfailed.In itkeptablemenfromre-his November decree, ceivingpositionsofrespon-Khrushchevadmittedthat sibilityinthepartyandinthepreviousanti-religious Sovietindustry. campaignprovedineffective. thatKhrushchevemphasised thewaytobringthese beli 'saroundtoCommunism,snotbydiscriminatingagainstthembutbypatientlyeducatingthemso theywill"freethemselves fromreligiouserrors."

RidiculeRebounds
Thefactisthatyoung people marriedwerestillbeing inchurch,baptisedandeducatedintheFaith. Theywereevenbecoming adeptinansweringtheridiculeheapedonreligion. Whenoneatheisticlecturer ridiculedbeliefinaGod, because,asheputit,the worldwasfunctioningso smoothlyitdidnotneeda God,hegotthisreplyfromhislisteners:"Thatjust showshowstupidyouare andhowsmartGodis.God issointelligentthatHe canmakeaworldwhich canrunbyitself."
Communist officialdom

Twopriests,apastorand acurate,serveCatholicsat achurchinLeningrad.Two otherpriestsareopenly servingCathclicsinother partsoftheSovietUnion. Icangivenofurtherdetailsaboutthem. ThursdaMarch24,1955. Orthodox.Therearealso aboutsome30,000,000Moslems.IknowthattheBap- tistshaveachurchinMoscowandachapelinKiev. TherearetwoJewishsynagoguesinMoscowandone inLeningrad.Ihavealso heardofsomeLutherai churchesamongtheVolga Deutsch. IhaveseentheOrthodox attendtheirchurcheson bigfeastdaysinimpressive numbers.Theyweremainlyolderfolks.butIsaw someyoungpeople,even youngCommunistpioneers andsoldiersinuniform.
TheOrthodoxhavea numberofseminariesin Russia.Severalwereopen-... edlastyear,accordingto thejournaloftheMoscow patriarchate. Iwasnot abletovisitanyOrthodox seminaries.
Theirpublishedcurricu-lumissomewhatsimilarto thatofCatholicseminaries, exceptthatitplacedmore stressonsociology.Of course,thecurriculummay' notbetoorevealingsince thewayyoucarryitoutis whatcounts.
ImetsomeOrthodox monksatKiev.Theyseemedtobesincerelyreligious. Ialsometsomeofthe "higher-ups"intheOrthodoxChurchsuchasthe MetropolitanNikolai,who attendsthevariouspeace congressesoutsidethe SovietUnion.Imetthem casuallyatsomeembassy receptions.ButIaminnoa positiontosayanything abouttheirviewsorpassjudgmentsontheirsincerity.
MoslemSeminary
IvieitedaMoslemseminaryinBukharawhere about75studentswerein training.Theseminaryis underthedirectionofthe MuftiatTashkent.Iwas allowedtositinonclasses inParseesyntax,chantingofscripturesandcommentariesonKoraniclaw.
Ichattedwiththestudentsandhadteawiththe professorswhowereall imams(Moslempriests)withbeards.Boththe studentsandtheteachers appearedtobemenofsincerereligiousconvictions.
I askedhavefrequentlybeen whytheRussian Communistswh')orededicatedtoachievingacompletelyatheistsocietystill Permitfreedomofworship. Theanswerisself-interest. Freedomorreligionis guaranteedintheSoviet constitution.Theyhaveto guardagainstcontradicting themselves.Westernnewsmenwouldlovetocatch themfinallyabolishingall freedomofreligion.Theywouldhavesomethingto jumpon.
Ofcourse,theCommunistshopeforthedaywhen everybodywillbeso"enlightenedthatnoonewants topractiseanyreligion. Butaslongas"religious superstition"persiststhe Redswillleavejustenough freedomsotheycanpoint toitintheirpropaganda andsay:"See,wehave freedomofreligion."

Inrecommendingsuch cautiontheywereperfectly right.But,whenitcame toareligiousvocationthey pushedthiscautiontoan unreasonableextreme. Manyparentswouldnot thinkoftheideaofason ordaughterenteringa seminaryoranovitiateunlesstheywerecertainthat theyhadavocation.
Theywouldnotallowtheirchildrentotakethe slightestriskinthismatter ofavocation-theywanted themtostayintheworld untiltheywerequitesure thattheyhadavocation.
Thatattitudewaswrong formanyreasons.Firstly, itwasbasedontheideaaveryold-fashionedidea, averywrongandharmful idea-thatapersonwho enteredaseminaryor novitiateandcameout againwasafailure;sucha personwasviewedwith suspicion;peopleimagined thattheyhaddonesomethingwrong.
werenotsuitedforit,orif theywerenothappyinit, theywerenottohesitate aboutleavingitandlooking elsewherefortheirtrue notwastedtheirtimeor vocation.How fewboysandgirls thrownawayotheroppor-therewerethathitontheir tunities.Theywouldhavetruevocationinlifeirnmegainedalot.Theintensediately;thereweremany spirituallifeofthesemin-whotriedtwooreventhree aryornovitiatewouldpositionsbeforetheysettledleaveanindelibleimpres-ontherightone.Allthat sionandwouldbethestartwasacceptedasquitenorofadeeplyspirituallifeinmal,anditwasalsothe theworld.
Theliterary,philosophicalandtheologicalstudies doneintheseminarywould markamanasapersonof superioreducationandin God'sprovidenceitmight behismeansofpreparing apersonforvocationinthe worldasanenlightened leaderofthelayapostolate.
Extremecautionwithregardtovocationswasmost unreasonablewhenthey consideredthenormalprocedureparentsadopted whenitwasaquestionof choosingatrade,acareer oraprofessionintheworld.

Thepriest,however,explainedthatthevowwas invalidforanumberof reasons.Healsoassured thementhathewasconfidentthattheSwissauthoritieswouldneverpermittheirextraditiontoRumania.
Theleaderacceptedthe priest'sdecisionregarding thevowhehadtaken,but herefusedtobelievethe assurancethatneitherhe norhisfriendswouldbe extradited,declaringthat thecrowdsgatheredoutside thelegationwerehostile.

Beforetheysaid,"Peace onearth,goodwilltowards men,"theangelssang "GlorytoGodinthehighest"andbeforeOurLord said"Loveyourneighbour asyourself"Hesaid"Thou shaltlovetheLordThyGod withthywholemind,thy wholesoul,thywhole strength."
AndIthinkitisafascinatingcommentaryupon whatishappeninginthe religiousmindoftodaythat menshouldsowhollyhave concentrateduponthetwo phrasesthattoOurLord aresecondaryandregard Hisprimaryasthoughit wereakindofsecondary; thatreligionconsistsin lovingone'sneighbour, spreadingpeaceandgoodwillandthatthespecial adorationofGodwhichfor ChristOurLordmeant everythingisreallyvery muchamatterofindividual temperament.
Theresultisthatyou haveakindofChristianity frequentlytobefoundand foundinverygoodpeople whichreducesChristianity tosocialservice,philanthropy,kindnesstoonean-
theseotherthings,earthly happinessandtherest,will beaddeduntoyou.Heis statingpreciselywhatHe standsforreligiously.
Nowthisotherviewof religionassocialservice,as kindness,asloveofone another,isinitsownwaya magnificentthingbutit cutsoutwhat,throughout theages,throughallthe historyofmankindhas beentheessentiallyreligious thing,namelythesensethat inenteringintoreligion,in embracingareligion,we werebeinginitiatedinto divinemysteries.
WhereChristDiffers
Therearenodivinemysteriesinthereligionof socialservice,butChrist OurLord'steachingis sparklingandglowingwith divinemysteryallthetime.
Nowthisconcentration uponthesecondaryelement inOurLord'steaching,the elementthattheGospels showtobesecondary.has hadoneresultwhichis worthapassingcomment.

Hewas,indeed,another Christ.Thepatientsloved him,andmanyofthenonCatholicsweremostimpressedwithhisgoodness andkindness.Theyused tosaythattheirownministersdidnotcome.Iam surethatwhentheywere dischargedtheycarriedwith themintotheirfamiliesthe pictureofwhataCatholic priestshouldbe,fullofthe charityofChrist.
CuriousRegulation
Hiswholeoutlookand attitudewasbroadand lackinginrigidity.This hospitalhappenedtobein hisparish,thereforehe wouldcomeandhelpanyonehecould.Thesepeople weresick,sohegaveallof himselftothetaskofgiving themspiritualcomfort.
