WhentheRev.M.ToopandtheRev.W.Foleywereordained* tothepriesthoodbytheMostRev.L.J.GoodyonSept.12intheParishioners ChurchoftheHolyRosary,Nedlands,theceremonyhadaboutitOrdination omostintimateandhomelyatmosphere,astheordinandiandAndFirst theirfamilieshavebeenformanyyearsparishionersoftheplace.
Thisaspectofthesacred occasionwasstressedbythe Rt.Rev.Mgr.E.Moss,parish priest,inpreachingtheoccasionalsermon.
Hehadknownthosetwo youngpriestssincetheir childhooddays,saidMgr. Moss.Hehadseenthemas youngchildrenintheir goodparents'homes.He hadbeenassociatedwith themintheparochial schoolwheretheyreceived theirprimaryeducation.
Theyhadbeenformany yearsfaithfulanddevoted altarboysinthatsanctuary, whichtheyloved.Eleven yearsagotheyhadheard thecall,"Come,follow Me,"andhadgonetoSt. Charles'Seminary,where theyfinishedtheirsecondaryeducationandstudied philosophy.

Justfouryearsagothey hadproceededtoItalyand now,today,afterallthose yearsofhope,prayerand preparation,theystoodin thesanctuary,notasaltar boys,butas"otherChrists," receivingfromthehandsof himwhohadbeentheir teacher,guideandfriendin St.Charles'thethreefold powerofthepriesthoodtooffersacrifice,topreach andtoremitsin.

Sir,-Iamratherunwillingtoobjecttoanyprojectwhichisthemanifestationofone'senthusiasmfor thetemporalwellbeingof ourChurch.ButIwould likethosewhoseriouslyentertainthepossibilityofa ChristianPartyinAustralia,nottooverlookafew ratherimportantpoints.
Themainsourceofinspi-rationforthiskindofParty comesfromthevarious ContinentalChristianParties.Butthereisagreat differencebetweentheContinentalandAustralianpoliticalset-up.
OntheContinent,socialist partieswereborninthe mindsofanti-christianand moreorlessmarxistpoliticians,consequentlythose partiesareanimatedby hostileoratleastbyalien ideologies.Hencetheneed forindependentChristian politicalpartiesandtradeunions.
Ontheotherhand,the A.L.P.wasbornonthe dock-yardsandinthe workshopsandgrewup withoutanideology,andits animatingforceisstillnot
aphilosophy,buttheeconomicwelfareofourworkingpopulation.Whatwe needhereisnotsomucha newparty,buttofillup thespiritualvacuumofthe A.L.P.

Asecond,andprobably moreimportantdifference betweenthetwocontinents isthatinEuropethereare strongandexperiencedlay movementsthatarematured enoughtotakeactionindependentlyofthevisible Church.OnlywhenCatholic laymenhavetheirwelles-. tablisheddailypapersand magazines,whentheirmovementsarefinanciallyindependentoftheChurch, whentheirleadersarewell trainedindoctrinessothat theycantakeindependent responsibilities,canwe thinkofaChristianParty. ButeveninEuropethere arestilltroublesregarding theserequirements.ProfessorGedda's'Civiccommittees"inItalyarethecause ofmanyscandals,tomentiononlythisaffair.When youvisittheCatacombsof SaintSebastianinRome, thedoorontheleftofthe basilicareads:"Catacombs," thatontheright"Civic Committee".Andtheeasiest waytopickoutaconvent
inanItaliantownistosee whichbuildinghasthemost `DemocraziaCristiana'postersplasteredonitsgates. ManysolidCatholicsseethe causeofthesetbackof ChristianDemocracyin ItalyintheexcessiveinvolvementoftheChurchin partypolitics.
Whenonethinksthat hereevenasquare-dance hastobeannouncedfrom thepulpit,onefeelsthata ChristianPartywouldbe ratherahazardousproject.

Recentevents,inwhich prominentmembersofour nationalParliamenthave figured convincelargely,mustsurely Christianpeoplethatthereissomethingvery wrongwithAustralianpoliticsto-day.
ViciousCircle
Weallknowthatthere areindividualmemberswho arestrivingtheirverybest topromoteahealthystate of rulesaffairs;buttheParty andplatformmake theirtaskwell-nighimpossible.
Ithinkthatthemost deplorableaspectofAustralianpoliticsisthefact thatwithonlytwobigpar- tiesinthefieldthevicious circlegoesonandon.
[landswhichhavepitchedfortheSouthAustralian baseballteamareusedbyaledger-examinerina BankofNewSouthWalesbranchinchecking signaturerecords.Thisofficermustbeableto identifythesignaturesofcustomersofhisbranch ontheirchequespresentedforpayment,ifnecessary verifyingwithsignaturerecordcards.
Thereareover8,000pairsofhandsworkingin the"Wales"-providingbankingservicesforwell overhalf-a-millioncustomers.Theyarewillingto workforyou,too.

Itwouldscarcelybepossibletosayinclearerterms thatsecularismhasfailed.Andthetesttheinspectorsapplyisapragmaticone,indeed.Theyseein thefirstplaceafailureinintellectualdevelopment, inthatnumbersoftheirchildrenshowawidediscrepancybetweentheirphysicalageandtheirmentaldevelopment.Secondly,theyseeafailureinconduct; thisismoreimpliedthanasserted.Theyfrequent "lowdives,"theyaresociallyprecocious,theydonot choosethegoodandrejectthebadinliterature,the theatre,films,radioandinlife.Inaword,theyare "arealproblem."
Nowitwouldbeabsurdtoclaimthatthechildrenfromthedenominationalschoolsarenotalso beingaffectedbytheessentialcheapness,vapidityand viciousnessofmodernliving.Buttherearethese differences.Thechildwhoseoutlookonlifeisintegratedwithreligion(bothinschoolandathome) hasahighly-developedsenseofsin.Hemaygo wronganddoes(butnotonsuchawholesalescaleas thelessfortunate).Butheknowsheiswrong,andhis conductcreatesanall-roundtensionforhiminthe spiritofhisschool,hishome,andhischurch.Itis astrongincentivetorepentandtoreform.The tendencytodrift,todevelopinevil,facesmany shecks.
Onthepositiveside,hehasathousandmotives toremaingoodandtobecomebetter.An thesemotivesarebackedbydivinesanctions, sothattheyfartranscendthepuny naturalismotherwiseavailable. Frankly,theCatholicschoolsdo nothavetocomplainofdelinquencyasamajorproblem.
Whatcansecularismdotoprou upitscollapsingedifice?Itis plainthattheweeklyperiodset asideforministers'visitorBible readingbytheteachersthemselves isnotmeetingthecase.What iswantedissomedefinitereligiousteachingonbeliefandconduct.Butthatcouldonlybehad bytheinventionofsomekindof lowest-common-factorreligion whichwouldbesoemasculatedas nottobeChristianity.Itwould satisfynoone.
Secularism,havingabandoned anykindoforganisedreligion,now findsitimpossibletoturnoutgood citizens,evenofthisworld.Itis utterlyinadequatetofacethegreat spiritualcrisisofadisintegrating world.Itwillneedtore-think itswhOleposition.
Ifeverythingwasaboveboardregardingthe Attleetour,andifthereresultedfromitbetterrelationsbetweenthetotalitarianimperialistsandthe democracies,wouldthateventualitycompensatethis countryfortheforfeitureorwaningofAmerican friendship?Itwouldbeaverypoorbargainindeed.

FatherBradyrecalled howthedramaofreligious vocationwasintroduced intotheworldbyOurDivineLordatthetimeofthe apostles,andhowthefire ofdivinelovespreadfrom soultosoulthroughthe centuries,untiltheyreachedtheSisteraroundwhom theceremoniesthatmorn ingcentred.Religiousexperiencedthatfireindifferentways,buttheyhadreactedseriouslyandpurposelytoit.
Itwasanexperiencewhich hundreds ofthousands
havetastedbeforethem, andwhich,withthegrace ofGod,wouldcontinueto touchhundredsofthousandsafterthem.Ithad comeinvariouscircumstancesandledthembydifferentwaystotheCongregationoftheSistersofSt. JohnofGod.
AgoodandmercifulGod plannedthattheyshould workouttheireternalsalvationbybecomingReligious,andto-daythatplan wasbeginningtotakedefiniteshapefortheyoung postulantwhoattheconclusionoftheceremony wouldbeginhernovitiate
Thenovitiatewasina veryspecialwayahouseof God.Itmightbesaidto belongtoGodalone.It wastruethateveryreligioushousebelongedto Christ,butinitmost othersshared.Theschool belongedtoChrist,butit belongedalsotothestudents.Thereligious hospitalbelongedtoChrist, butitalsobelongedtothe sick.TheorphanagebelongedtoChrist,butitalso belongedtotheorphan.
Thenovitiate,however, belongedexclusivelyto Christ.Thatwaswhy,in thewordsofthepsalmist, theymightrepeat:"One thingIhaveaskedofthe Lord,andonethingwillI seek,thatImaydwellin theHouseoftheLordall thedaysofmylife."

Thetimespentinthenovitiatewasofutmostimportance,becauseitwould determinethenun'ssubsequentreligiouslife.Experiencehadshownthatas aSisterwasinthenovitiatesoshebecameinher laterreligiouslife.The timespentinthathousewas oneofprayerandwork. Perhapsitcouldmore fittinglybeclaimedtobea lifeofprayer,forthereshe wouldlearntoturnevery activityofthedayintoa prayerandtodirectevery exerciseofheart,mindand handtoGod.
GlamourisedbyGod
Everytaskwasaccepted gratefullyandlovinglyand donefortheloveofGod.It mightnotalwaysbeeasy becauseSisterwouldbe calledupontodoveryordinarythingsinwhichby worldlystandardsthere wasnoglamour,butthe performanceofwhichcould beglamourisedbeyond measureintheeyesofOur Lord.
"Whenthisceremony concludes,youwillbeinstal. ledasGod'shousekeeper," FatherBradysaid."Whateveryoudo,youdoforthe loveofChrist,andbecause itisforChristtherewillbe nohalfmeasures,foronly theverybestisgoodenough fortheDivineMasterwho admitsyoutoHishousetoday.Thenovitiateisonly apreludetothereligious years today,withGod'shelp,you willbepermittedtomake yourfirstvows,andwith theexpirationofthefurther probationaryperiodthatfollowsyouwillmakethem forlife."

OnSundayswewenttochurch,sometimesto theUnitarians,sometimestotheCalvinists,andsometimestotheLutherans.ThebackboneoftheProtestantservicewasthesermon,andifthesermonwas agoodonewedidn'tcarewhereitwaspreached. Thisindifferencewasbasedontheconvictionthatwe wereprayingtothesameGodeverywhere,andthe onlythingthatmatteredwasthesincerityofthe prayerandnottheplace.Theresultofthisneutral attitudewasadeepandsincerereverenceforGod accompaniedbyacompletedisregardofdogma,ceremoniesandformalities.
NOGROUNDSOFPREJUDICE
Weknewverywellthatourneutralitywasout ofplaceinaCatholicchurch,andwedidn'ttrytoattendaMass,becausewecouldn'tunderstandit.NeverthelesswewerenotprejudicedagainsttheCatholics.WehadafewCatholicrelativesandquitea fewCatholicfriends.MymothertookmeintoaCatholicchurchsometimesjusttoadmireitsbeauty,but wedidnotunderstandtheliturgy,andwewerenot anxioustogetacquaintedwiththem.
Withthisfamilybackgrounditwouldhavebeen somethingofamiracleformetohavebeenparticularlyattractedbytheCatholicChurch,butthemiracle cidhappen.Itwasduetothe"Zaszlonk"("Our Banner"),anexcellentCatholicyouthmagazine, whichwasverypopularwithHungarianschoolboys, Catholicsandnon-Catholicsalike.Mybrotherssub,cribedtoit,andIbegantoreaditattheageof6. Itwasinterestingandexcitingreading:science,adventure,actualcommentsandtheBoyScoutswith colourfuldescriptionofScoutactivities,camps,trips, gayandseriousadventures.
Ialsohadopportunitytogetholdofsomeearlier volumesdatingbackto1902.Itwasthenandthere thatIhadmettheextremelyimpressivepersonality ofthethenelectedPopePiusX.AtthattimeI couldn'tforesee,ofcourse,thatonedayIshouldknow himasSaintPiusX,buthisremarkablepersonality hadmadealastingimpressiononmeallthesame.
Inthisway,littlebylittle,Igotacquaintedwith andattractedbytheCatholicmentality,andbeganto appreciatetheworld-wideorganisationandgoodwork oftheCatholicChurch.AtschoolIreceivedregularinstructioninmyfaith,butitcouldn'taltermy affectiontowardstheCatholicChurch.
time,includingSundays,andmyinterestturnedto thespecialfieldofmedicine-neurologyandpsychiatry-Ichosetostudy.
Myexperiencewithmypatients,whenIsawasIthoughtatthattime-"theimmortalsoul"degradedorcompletelyblottedoutbyahaemorrhagic focus,atumour,oraninsidiousinfection,shookmy faithintheexistenceofanimmortalsouloreverlastinglife.
Afewmagnificentevents,suchastheInternationalEucharisticCongressinBudapestin1938,turnedmyinteresttemporarilytoCatholicism;occasionallyIdroppedintoaCatholicchurch,butthatwas aboutall.
Thewarcame,andIspentsixyearswiththe HungarianAirForceasapsychiatrist.Attheend ofthewarIwasinGermany,inBavaria,themostCatholicStateinGermany,forfouryears.Morethan twoyearsIspentinBamberg,oneofthestrongholdsofGermanCatholics.Ivisitedsomeofthe famouschurchesthere,butIhardlyfeltanything elsebutanadmirationofmedievalartisticbeauty. Mysoul,thatoncesoferventlylongedforthetrue faith,.wasinastateofhibernationyet.
InalltheseyearsIplungeddeepintoalifeof sin. Idonotwishtodivulgemysinshere,Ileft thembehindmeintheConfessional.Therewas, however,onethingInevergaveup,notevenwhenI seemedtobeveryfarfromanyreligion;thatwasmy eveningprayersasIlearntthemfrommymother. Slowly,then,Ibegantofeelthatalloverthestormy
FromTransylvaniatoHighgateHill, overaperiodof40years,throughthehorrorsofthewar,wasindeedanodyssey-but itendedinthecitadeloftheFaith.Dr.L. Peter,aStatepsychiatristtellsofthesignificantroleOurLadyplayedinhisconversioninreward,seemingly,forconstant prayer.
Probablyitistheexperienceofmanyconverts thatonthethresholdofconversiontheyfeelimmense pityandsorrowforthoseleftbehind.Soitwas withme,too.Itisanimmensedifficulty,andwho knowshowmanyconversionsarebeingstoppedonthat .tumblingblock. Imustadmitthatmyconversion wasgreatlyfacilitatedbythefactthatIlandedin. 'WesternAustralia,farawayfromanyofmycoreligionists.
Fromnowonthingswentonrapidly.Myfriend providedmewithamissal,introducedmeintoone oftheInquiryClassesonCatholicFaith.ThesympathetichelpofmembersofthePresidiumofthe LegionofMary,aprasidiumespeciallyappointedto assisttheinquiryclasses,providedmewithmuch support.Isoonfoundthatmostofthedoctrinalissueshadbeensufficientlyclearforme.Alongtime agoIhadcometotheconclusionthattheteachingof theCatholicChurchwasthemostlogical,onceone acceptedthepremises.Formeitwasamatterof acceptingthedoctrineoftheDivinityofChrist,the
doctrineoftheBlessedTrinity.Inthosedayswhen IseemedtobequitefirmlyanchoredinUnitarianism,IhadseenclearlythatifChristwasGod,if thedoctrineoftheBlessedTrinitywastrue,there wasplaceforonereligion,oneChurchonly,theCatholicChurch.
Icametorealiseagainthattheteachings,the miracles,theclaimsandcommandmentsofChrist madesenseonlyifHewasGod.Iremembered thebookofaGermanwriter,"Genius,Insanityand Fame."Theauthor,apparentlyanagnostic,dealing withthepersonalityofthemanJesus.hadcometo theconclusion,onthescoreoftheteachings,claims andcommandments,that"themanJesuswasa :uttererfromparanoidschizophrenia."
Sleepingasmyfaiththenwas,Iwasshockedby thatstatement.Yetithadgivenmeanimpetusthe effectofwhichIfeltinthosemonthsof1950,when attendingtheinquiryclassesIwastold:"ThesemiraclescouldnothavebeengivenbutbyGod."
Inthecourseofmyreligiousinstruction,atthe ageoffourteen,Ialsoreceivedsomeinformationon theoutlinesoftheCatholicfaith.Ignoringtheenormousdifferences,ItriedtofindsomesimilaritybetweentheCatholicandUnitarianteaching.Thisindividualtheologyofmyownwasratherawishful thinking,neverthelessIwashappytoseethatinthe questionofthefreedomofwillandsalvationthrough faithandgoodworksthebeliefwasnearlyidentical.
AfterIhadleftsecondaryschool,Ienrolledatthe FacultyofMedicineattheUniversityofDebrecen.A newchapteropenedinmylife.Ileftmyhomeand enteredintoastrangeworldquitedifferentfrommy T-ansylvanianschooltown.
DebrecenwasaCalviniststronghold,knownas "CalvinistRome,"inHungary.OnlyafewUnitarianswerelivingthere,andI.seldommetanyofthem. AlthoughIhadspenttwelveyearsinUnitarian schools,Ihadnogreatreligiouszealasfarasthe UnitarianChurchwasconcerned.Ididn'tlikeCalvinismeither. Iknewfromhistorythatitwas moreintoleranttowardstheUnitariansthanany otherchurchordenomination.ThefounderofUnitarianism,Servetus,hadbeenburntatthestakeby JohnCalvinhimselfinGeneva.
NOAPPROACHBYCATHOLICFRIENDS
ItwasinthesecondyearofmystayinDebrecen thatoneSundayIwenttoMasswithaCatholicfriend etmine.Inthefaintlightoftheovercrowded churchmyeyeswerecaughtbythelightofthecan,diesontheHighAltar,andIfeltveryhappy;ashappy asmanyyearsbefore,inmychildhood,whenIhad beenwatchingthecandlesoftheChristmastreein curhome. IfeltIwasathome.
'romthenonforyearsIwentalmostregularly toSundayMass.ThoughfullyawareofthemeaningoftheMass,Ididnotunderstandmuchofthe liturgy,andstrangelyenoughIneveraskedanyof myCatholicfriendsforanexplanation.Onthe otherhand,myCatholicfriends-therewerequitea fewofthem-knewthatIusedtogotoMass,but, unfortunately,theydidnotshowevenapassing interestinthatfact.
ThiswasallthemoreremarkablebecauseotherwisethesubstantialCatholicminorityofDebrecenled averyvigorousCatholiclife.FormanyyearsIenjoyedthehospitalityandfriendshipofanexcellent Catholicfamilywithoutmakinganyprogressfrommy semi-consciouslongingtoarealapproachtotheCatholicfaith.
Afterhavingtakenmymedicaldegree,Istarted mypost-graduatetrainingattheTeachingHospital
IalsocametorealisethatJesus,asIhadknown Himbefore,wasnotamanofbloodandflesh,forHe v.asjustanebulousMaster,aGreatTeacher,who diedontheCrbssonlytoshowexampletoHisfollowers,whoseResurrectionwasavaguemyth,and whoseAscensionintoHeaven-well,wherewasthat Heavenanyway?
IhadtoseethatChristianitywasnotjustacollectionofmoralprinciplesteachingcharity,loveto one'sneighbours,good-fellowship.ItmeanttheacceptanceofeverywordgivenbytheDivineTeacher andbeliefinHisreality.
Theonlyobstaclethatremainedwastotakethe laststep.Thepriestswhoinstructedmedidtheir besttomakeiteasy.ButIthinkthemostimportantmomentumIreceivedwastheregularand,now St.Stephen'sBasilica,Budapest,isthecentreandbythehelpofmyfriend,intelligentattendanceat symbolofHungary'sfaithandnationalism. MassandtheprayingofCatholicprayersand,Ithink, regularprayingofthe"HailMary." yearsofthewarandafter,someextremelybenevo-"SHEWASALWAYSWITHME" lentPowerwatchedovermeandhelpedmemore. thanIhadeverdeserved.
In1949thescenealteredquickly.Ithadbecomeimperativetoleaveover-crowdedGermanyand lookforaplacethatIcouldcallmyhome.SoI cametoAustralia.ThefirstdayhereIventured intoaCatholicchurch.IcametorealisetheuniversalityoftheChurch.
Thefirstyearsherecouldeasilyhavebeenyears ofdespairforme.Iwasnotabletopractiseinmy profession,andhadtotakeupjobsthatpromisedme nofuture.EnoughhasbeenwrittenonthedifficultiesfacingprofessionalpeoplewhomigratetoAustralia,andIdonotintendtodwellonthesedetails. However,almostfromthestart,Ididslightlybetter thanmostofthoseinmyposition.AgainIhadto supposeIwasreceivinghelpandassistancefroman extremelybenevolentPower.
Inthewinterof1950IcametoPerth,andin spiteofnotquiteencouragingconditions,Imetvery goodpeople,foundsuitableemploymentandafriendlyhome.Itwasthenthat,atSt.Mary'sCathedral, IpouredoutmyhearttotheMotherofGod.Iprayedtoherpossiblyforthefirsttime,andmyprayers wereheard.FromthenonIwenttoSundayMass .?,gularlyagain.
AtthatstageIfoundoutsidehelp,too,atlast.A friend,whohadcomewithmeonthesameboatto Australia,andwhohadsharedthesmalltribulationsofthefirstyearhere,cametohelpme.HeexplainedsomepointsofCatholicfaith,thatwerestill doubtfulforme.Especiallyhisreassuranceson thesalvationofnon-Catholicsgavememuchrelief andcomfort.
Morethanayearaftermyreceptionintothe ChurchImadeadiscovery.InMay,1936,Iwent f(rashortvisittoBudapest.Inthatyear,the 250th.anniversaryoftheliberationfromTurkish subjugationoftheHungariancapitalwascelebrated. A.:Iwaswanderinginthestreetsoftheoldcity,a ladyofferedmeamedalandapictureforsale.Out ofcuriosityIboughtbothofthem.
WhenIinspectedthemmoreclosely,itturnedout thatthemedalhadapictureoftheVirginMary,the littlepicturepresentedayounggirlkneelingbefore Mary.Ifeltsomewhatembarrassed,notknowing whattodowiththem.FinallyIputthemintoa secretfoldofmywallet.Ihadcarriedthatwallet aboutmealmostcontinuouslyuntilmycomingto Australia. Ihadalmostcompletelyforgottenits secretcontentsuntilIhappenedtoopenthesecret foldagainin1952,andthenIrealiseditwastheMiraculousMedal.
Ihadabout200flyinghourswiththewalleton me.Iwentthroughtheadventuresofthewar, throughairraids,throughtheyearsofapparenthopelessnessinGermany,andlaterinAustraliawithout knowingthatshewasalwayswithme.

Thecrowningjoyofhis recitalwastheplaying, amonghisextras,ofDebussy-adelightfartooshortlived,foritmadeyouwant toabandonyourselftohours ofauditoryluxurywhich thisyoungmanprovides withsuchmodestcharm.

Ifithassurvivedwith suchvitalityasithasretained,itisduetothevigorousstartgivenitbyBrighamYoung,thesoundmaterialbasisonwhichhe establishedit,andtoits beingheldtogetherbythe stronghierarchicalorganizationwithwhichheprovidedit.
But,ascredulitywanes, Mormonismisfindingit moreandmoredifficultto keepitsspiritfromdeclining.

TheGoaneseisthereforewelcomeeverywhere andtheonlycompensationhewantsforhis workistobeabletoremitsmallsavingsinorder tohelpsupportthefamilyheleftbehindinGoa.

Inthesetinyterritories, whichhadbeencededor militarilyoccupied,Portuguesebloodmingled liberallywiththatofthe localpeoples;morethan fourcenturiesoflifein common,ofaspiritual presence,ofinsufflatinga differentcivilisation,of interpenetrationofcultures,havecreatedathoroughlydifferentiatedsocialtype.

Thelastpointconcerns questionsofdefenceand istheonlyonethatseems toreflectseriousworries oftheIndianUnion.
TheUnionhasitsown foreignpolicy.Aswe seeit,itsaimistoguaranteeavastgeographic andhumanzoneof neutralityinthepossible conflictbetweenCommunistpowersandthe Westernworld. Any opinionwemayhold abouttheUnion'spresent possibilitiesofmaking thispolicyprevailisirrelevant;itshouldonlybe borneinmindthatour positionandthatofthe IndianUniononthequestionarenotthesame.

Whenonesaysthat IndiafearsGoa,itisridiculoustoimaginethatit canfearthetwoorthe 20,000menthatwemight haveoutthere.Whatit fearsistheusewhich mightbemadeoftheterritoryofGoabystronger powersopposedtothe IndianUnion'spolicy.We havetoexaminethedifficultyandtrytofindasolution,iftheUnionsincerelydesiresit.

Therehave,tobesure, beentransactionsinvolvingso-calledcolonialterritoriesinthecourseof history.Napoleonsold Louisiana;aslateas1898 SpaincededPortoRico; threecenturiesagowe ourselvesgaveawayTangierandBombayasdowry ofaPortugueseprincess, morethanonceinthe 19th.centuryEngland proposedtousthepurchaseofGoa.

Ihavereflectedlongon thissadcondition,andhave hesitatedtoreviewconcertswhich,tomymind, havebeensobadthat,whateverfewredeemingfeaturestheremanyhavebeen, theyweresosuperficialthat tohighlightthemwould haveonlybeentohave damnedtheperformance withthemosttrivialof praise.
Itiswithoutexcusethat artistssuchasSolomon. SternandSikishouldbeso apprehensivethattheiranxiety'comesover'tothe moatinexperiencedconcertgoer.
Yetthebulkofthe orchestraplodsalongin blissfulignoranceofthe realpurposeofthework theyareplaying.Theyseem unawarethatoftentheyare intendedtoberepresenting visualimagesbymeansof music.Andthereareclassic proceduresfordoingjust this.
Itisessentialfortheartisttorecognisetheneedto imitateinthemelodiccontourseitherthesilhouette orthecharacteristicmotion ofthethingoneissetto describe.
Thereisalsothesubjectivedescriptionofthe emotionaleffectonthesensitivelistener.Thislatter canonlybeachievedwhen eachandeverymemberof eachandeverysectionof theorchestraisasensitive participant.
