Tomentiononeoutstandingdifferenceherecalledthat,atthattime, thesecretaryoftheboard receivedthemunificentsum of£15perannum.And again,herememberedthe timewhen,in1919,he boughthisfirstcarand droveitoutfromPerth, alongaroad,notoneyard ofwhichwasevengravelled, letalonebitumenised.

Thefact,ofcourse,isthatthereisnoreason whatevertobelievethatMissHaverhasgiven,upher religion.Forifthatweretheresultofeverygrave sintheranksofthefaithfulwouldbesadlydepleted. ByattemptingmarriageoutsidetheChurch,Miss HaveriscutofffromthesacramentallifewhichnourishesthesouloftheCatholic.ButineveryotherrespectsheisboundbythelawsoftheChurch.She mustofferMass,fastandabstain,sayherprayersand keeptheCommandments.

SYDNEY,June10.-HisEminenceNormanCardinalGilroy,ArchbishopofSydney, hascalledattentionoftheworld'sland-hungrypeopletowhathedescribedashuge areasoffertilelandintheAustralian-administeredTerritoryofNewGuineaand Papua.

Ministersofanydenominationwilltellyouthat differenceinreligionisthe mostfruitfulcauseofunhappinessbetweenhusband andwife,andthelossof faithamongchildren.It isnotbecausetheChurch isnarroworbigotedthat shefrownsonthepractice.

Hethereforeresistedall effortstointroduceinto Englandtheteachingsof theProtestantreformerson theContinentofEurope.
Onhisdeath,however, duringthereignofthe boy-kingEdwardVI,15471553,barrierswereremoved,andbothCalvinismand Lutheranismobtained widespreadinfluence.
Elizabeth'sIntent
Thiswascheckedbythe accessionofQueenMary, 1553-1558,whichbrought withittherestorationof Catholicism.Asaconsequenceofthis,agreatmany oftheclergyandlaitywho hadsympathisedwithProtestantismfledabroadto HollandandFrance,GermanyandSwitzerland.
WhenElizabeth,15581603,succeededtothe throne,theseexilesreturnedtoEngland,morethan everaffectedbyCalvinism andLutheranism,asthe casemightbe.Butthey foundtheQueenunsympathetic.
ShewasintentonrestoringtheChurchofEngland asithadbeenunderEdwardVI;andherretention ofEpiscopalgovernmenttogetherwithmanyofthe oldritesandceremonies provedoffensivetothose whohadreturnedfrom abroad.
Thereturnedrefugees feltthatthereformspropos-

ButthePuritans,whether theyconformedtothe ChurchofEnglandornot, wereallardentfollowersof Calvin'steachings,other thanthosedealingwithecclesiasticalpolity,which thePresbyteriansaloneaccepted.
AndCalvin'steachings didnotmakethemvery pleasantpeople.E.Dowden,inhisbook,"Puritans andAnglicans,"wrote: "Theircardinalerrorlay inanarrowconceptionof GodastheGodofrightousnessalone,andnotas theGodofjoyandbeauty andintellectuallight."
Also,itisverydifficult forhumanbeingswhobelievethemselvesmysteriouslychosentobethe saintswhilstothersareleft asreprobatestoavoidselfcomplacencyandintoleranceofallviewssavetheir own.
A.C.Bensonsaidthatthe Puritans"forgotthatthe capacityforbeautyinnatural God''sthingswasafterall workaswell.It escapedthemthat,when theycriedfortheBibleand nothingbuttheBible,all theymeantwastextswhich theythemselvesselected."

Theythereforedeterminedtoexertallpossibleinfluenceto"purify"boththe creedsandpracticesofthe AnglicanChurchasre-establishedbyElizabeth.
Hencethename"Puritans,"giventothisfaction withintheChurchofEngland,afactionwhichaimed atgainingtheascendancy andmouldingAnglicanism accordingtotheirown desires.
Despairingofsuchslow methods,however,others feltthattheonlythingto dowastoabandonthe ChurchofEnglandandset upindependentChurches accordingtoaltogethernew plansandspecifications.
Thusarose"Independency."ThesePuritanIndependentsrejectedallCalvinistic,Lutheran,andElizabethanideasofreforming any"existentChurch." Theydeclaredallprevious Churchesbeyondreformation,andthatthe"Lord's People"shouldwithdraw altogetherandformnew voluntarygroupsboundtogetherbytheirown"Covenant"toserveGod, choosingtheirownofficers, andordainingtheworthiestmembersbytheimpositionoftheirownhands.

Thewholeideaofthe "Church"asformerlyunderstoodwas,therefore, abrogated.Thelocaland independentcongregation wastobeallthatmattered.

Sincereandgoodpeople shouldignoretheestablishedChurchandsetuptheir ownlittlesociety,independentofallSynodsand Convocations,orofany outsideauthoritywhatsoever. HewenttoNorwichin 1580,wherehebeganto preachtheseideas,attractinganumerouscongregation.Hisfollowers,who becameknownasthe "Brownists,"boundthemselvesbyreligiouscovenanttokeepGod'slaws undertheHeadshipof Christ,andtorefuseall "ungodlycompanywith wickedpersons."
Beforeayearwasout, however,RobertBrowne wasthrownintoprisonfor hisdenunciationsofepiscopacyandoftheestablishedElizabethanChurch. Onhisrelease,hewentin 1582withsomefollowersto Middelberg,Holland,there tosetupacommunityaccordingtohisnewprinciples.
AtMiddelberghewrote hisbookon"Reformation WithoutTarryingForAny," andasecondbookon"Free Christians,"inwhichhe setforthhisdoctrineon "CongregationalIndependence.'

In1584heabandonedthe enterpriseandwentto Scotland,wherethePresbyteriansimprisonedhim. Onhisreleasefromgaolhe returnedtoEngland,renouncedhisteachingon independency,andin1591 wasreinstatedasanAnglicanclergyman.
Fortheremaining42 yearsofhislifehewas rectorofaChurchofEnglandparish,duringwhich timehepublishedavindicationofhischangedviews. Hedied,stillabeneficed Anglicanclergyman,in 1633.

Itisofinteresttorecallthatthegreat PopeSt.PiusXwasmovedbythestoryofa remarkablechildwhowasborninBallybrickanparish,Ireland,andwhodiedatan earlyageinCorkCity.
Evenbeforetheissueof thefamousdecree,"Quam Singulari,"byPopePius X,theprivilegeofreceiving HolyCommunionhadbeen giventothischildoffour years,NellieOrgan,who. wascalledbyhercompanionsandteachers"Little NellieofHolyGod."
InJuly,1896,therewere marriedattheparishchurch inPortlaw,Co.Waterford, WilliamOrganandMary Aherne.Theylivedin Portlawformorethana yearafterthemarriage. Then,workforlabourers beingveryscarce,.thehusbandhadthechoicebetween emigrationandenlistment.
HejoinedtheBritish ArmyinWaterfordCityand gotapartmentsinwhatwas calledtheMarriedQuarters.Here,onAugust24, 1903,thefourthandyoungestchildwasborn.

Fornobodyknowsjust howvastRumJungle uraniumresourcesare. Eventhosebestqualifiedto :uessaresilentbecause allthisisatopsecret.But itseemslikelyRumJungle willbeworkedoutwithina life-timeortwo,whenperhapsthechurchcouldbe movedelsewhere.
Afterviewingthechurch site,wevisitedvariousparishionersintheirnew homes.Everywherewe lookedsomethingwasgoingon.Theprogressmade sincemylastvisitwasreallyamazing.

ThethirdSundayofthe month,followingtheopeningofthepublicschool, foundBishopO'Loughlin somethousandmilesaway intheAliceSpringsdistrict.SoIwenttoBatchelorfortheSundayMass. ArrivingearlyonSaturday morning,Iwentfirsttothe minesiteatRumJungle alongthenew5-mileroad fromBatchelor.
Apairofheavyirongates withahuge"stop"sign barredtheway. Iproducedmypassissuedbythe AdministratoroftheNorth-
westofWhite's,isacriss-BureauofMineralResourcrossofcosteens-hugecesinMelbourne.They trenchescutintheearthforwerefoundtoberadiooutliningandplottingtheactive. lineofthereefs.
Duringthepasttwodry seasons,geologistsofthe BureauofMineralResourceshaveconductedaerial surveys,withscintillometers.InaDakotaplane equippedwiththeseinstruments,theyhavecriss-crossedvastareasoftheNorthernTerritory.
AerialSurveys
Whentheirairbornescintillometersflyoversome radio-activeore,theyscintillateandthatpositionis fixedinstantlybyhighly specialisedradarnavigationalequipment.
Withoutdelay,geologists andgeophysicistsofthe bureauvisitedthespot,and reportedadefiniteoutcrop ofuranium-bearingdeposit. Thuswastheoccurrenceof uraniumfirstheardofinthe NorthernTerritoryinOctober,1949.
Diamonddrilling,totrace thecourseoftheorebody anditsextent,wasstarted. Orewasshippedtothe UnitedStatesfordetailed examination,andresults weresoencouragingasto causetheFederalGovernrpenttoproceedwithplans fortheexploitationofthe deposit.
Eachanomaly(asthisreactionfromthenormalon thescintillometeriscalled), ischartedbyadotanthehas

I wentstraightto theworkingsknownas "Whites,"wherethemain shaftisnowatadepthof about500feet,latertobe deepenedto550feet.Surmountingtheshaftisasteel headframewithwinches, andnearbyisahugesteel orehopper.
Thismainshaftissunk alongsidetheuraniumlode, notdirectlyoverit,andthe oreisreachedbycross-cuttingandtunnellingintothe lode.Aroundtheshaftare hugenewsteelbuildingsto housethenecessarymachineryandworkshops.
AttheGovernment'srequest,ConsolidatedZinc Pty.Ltd.formedthesubsidiary,TerritoryEnterpisesPty,Ltd.(orT.E.P.,as ItisknownallovertheTerritory),todeveloptheRum Junglefield,takingitover fromtheBureauofMineral Resources.
Wewereviewingnowthe resultoftheT.E.P.admin:qtrationanditslargecapitaloutlay.Brightlypainted,prefabricated,twoor three-roomedhomeswere scatteredalongthefive formedstreets,whichall bearaboriginalnames.
Aboutfortyhomesarealreadyoccupied;another fortyorsoareunderway. Ablockforsinglemen's quarterstohouseabout100 menispracticallyfinished. Anothersimilarblockis underconstruction,aswell asasimilarblockforsingle women.
Outsidethetownsiteproper,mainlyfollowingthe lineofthecurvedbitumen insertsattheendofthe war-timeairstripcloseby, wefoundavarietyof dwellings.Herewesought outafewpeople,whohad

Behindthesebuildingsis beingerectedtheprocessing plant,wheretheorewillbe refineddowntouranium oxide.Thefinalsmelting toproducepureuranium willbedoneelsewhere.Men wereengagedinwelding hugesteeltanks,whichwill formpartofthetreatment plant.Furtherbackwasapile ofuraniumoreawaiting processing. I estimated theremightbeabout10,000 tonsinthispileofgrey-blue powdery-lookingrock.
T.E.P.isresponsiblefor developinganyuranium workingsintheHundred ofGoyder,whichcomprises afieldofsome168square miles.Twootheruranium findsarebeingworkedin thisarea,besidesWhite's.
Dyson's,aboutamilefrom White's,wasfoundin1950 byDyson,ageologistwith theBureauofMineralResources.Open-cutmethods arebeingusedatDyson'sas themosteconomical.Bulldozersaregougingouta hugejaggedhole,tearing awayhundredsoftonsof over-burdenearthandexposingthereefs.

White'sDiscovery
Onthoselonelywalks,he alwayskeptalookoutfor minerals.Oneafternoon in1949,inapatchofscrub, hehappeneduponanexposedoutcropwhichherecognisedascontainingcopper ore.Heknewtherewasa coppermineinthisvicinityaquarterofacentury earlier,sohewasnotundulysurprisedbythisdiscovery.
Hedidnotice,however, someunusualfeatureabout thecolouringinthisrock; thegreencolouringcharacteristicofcopperwasunusuallydark,alsomingled withthegreenwerecanaryyellowcrystallised flakes.Hechippedsamplesfromthereef,andobservedtracesofpowdery sulphuryelloworerunning throughthespecimens.

Whiteconsultedahandbookpublishedbythe BureauofMineralResourcesundertheauthorityof theMinisterforNational Development.Hefound hisspecimensWeresimilar tothecolouredplatesinthe backofthepamphlet,showingwhattorbernite,carnotite,autunite,andothersecondaryuranium-bearing oreslookedlike.
HewasofftoDarwinwith hisspecimenassoonashe could.Minesbranchofficialsconfirmedhisopinion. Hesentfurthersamplesto theMinesdepartmentin AliceSprings,andtothe
TomFISoinwasaganger atthefettlers'camponthe line,beforeheretiredto hisRumJungleproperty manyyearsago.Ashe hadneverlefttheTerritory inthirtyyearsormore,he wasratherapprehensive whenItoldhimthatarrangementswerecomplete forhisadmissiontohospital inSydneynextweek.

ThelegendofRumJungledatesfrom1886.Two meninabullockcart,who weretakingsomebarrelsof rumtomenworkingina near-bycoppermine,;felt verythirstyastheydrove throughthissmallsemitropicaljungle.Theyrolledoutabarrelandopened it,dranktheirfillandwent tosleep.Whentheywoke, theyfoundtheprecious fluidhadspiltontheground andthebarrelwasempty. Thisincidentgavethename "RumJungle"tothespot.
ThelasttimeIpassed herewaswiththemanager oftheNorthernTerritory Railways,inhisnewsedan car.Thepneumatic-tyred wheelshadbeenremoved andreplacedbyappropriatewheelsforrailusage.
Thesteeringwheelof course,wassuperfluous,and hadbeenremoved.But allelse-gears,clutch, brakesandtheusualgadgets-wasthesameasusual forroadtraffic.Greatfunit wastositbehindthewindscreenandseetherailtrack stretchingformilesahead, pickingitswayinturn throughjungles,forests', scrubandswamps.

Irecalledthatthiswas thesamerailtrackalong whichMrs.AeneasGunn hadmeandered,andpenetratedthegriminteriorin 1902,allbeautifullydescribedinherbook,"Weof theNever-Never."
Onthisvisitbyrail,Torn Flynnhadtoldmethatthe cataractsinhiseyeswere sodensethathecouldno longerseehiscattle.Itwas inconnectionwiththisthat Iwascallingonhimnow.
ofmostotherimportant worlddeposits,RumJungle mineisideallysituated.It liesalongsidetheLarrimahDarwinrailway,andonlya fewmilesfromthefirstclassbitumenhighway, leadingtothedeepwater portatDarwin. Ithought,too,ofRum Jungleuraniumasasource ofatomicpower,capable ofproducingtremendous explosions,powerfulenough todestroyanyofourcapital cities,andthatstockpilesof thesedeath-dealingdevices wereheldbymightynations. Thereisonlyoneforce powerfulenoughtorestrain anddirectatomicpower,

Onthesameday,two truckloadsofBathurst IslandnativesvisitedBatchelor.Theypresented aninterestingafternoon's entertainmentwithspearthrowing,nativedances(the crocodile,buffalo,andspitfiredancewereamongtheir repertoire),anexhibitionof highjumping,atwhichtheyshowmorethanusualprow- ess-severaloftheparty couldclearoversixfeet withoutshoesofanykind.
