Afterfiveyears'missionaryworkinJapanandaholidayin Ireland,theRev.P.O'SullivanreturnedonMay27totakeup dutiesintheArchdiocese.
FatherO'SullivanwasattachedtotheYokahamadioceseinJapanfromJune, 1949.Catholicsinthat area,hesaid,numbered approximately10,000out ofageneralpopulationof sixmillions.
Contactwiththepagans wasmademainlythrough theLegionofMary,through hospitalvisitation,Sunday schools,andoccasionallecturesandtalksincolleges, schoolsandotherinstitutions.
FatherO'Sullivansaid therewasuniversalinterest inChristianity.TheJapanesefullyappreciatedthe factthatShintoismhadmisledthemandthatChristianitywassomethingsuperiortowhattheOriental cultshadtooffer.Universally,therewasatleast anacademicinterest.LecturesontheChristianfaith werewellattended,andin manycasesacknowledgmentwasmadeofitssuperiority.
Tobusinesspeopleand menoftheworld,however, Christianityappearedtoo difficult,saidFatherO'Sullivan.Manywouldliketo dieChristians,butthey procrastinated,intenton finishingtheirjobfirst.
FatherO'Sullivansaidit wasencouragingtoseethe manywhomadegreatsacrificestobecomeCatholics. TheymadesincereChristians.Althoughprogress washeartening,therewas nomassmovementtowards Christianity.Suchamovementwasnecessary,he continued,because,evenif therewerelapses,there washopeofsubstantialresultsinonegeneration.Catholicsweresofewinnumberthatitwasimpossible toestablishaCatholictradition.

Thatwasoneofthemajor difficultiesinJapan.In China,ontheotherhand, peoplecameintothe Churchinvillages.Withoutamassmovement,it wasmoredifficulttoinstruct thechildren,togiveconvertsanideaofwhatareal Catholicculturewaslike,

Again,marriagewasmore importantforJapanese men,becausetheyhadthe obligationofcarryingonthe traditionsofthefamily.Its cultdevolvedontheson.
