Invoicingsuchappeals, thesepeoplesimplygive expressiontoafundamental moraltruth.Theyproclaim, inotherwords,theincon- ParishLevelActiontestableprinciplethatthe "ImmigrationcanhelpinCreatorhasdestinedthe goodthingsoftheearthfor allmenandforallpeoples.
Itshallbeagreedthen, thatwe,perforce,areatthe receivingendofmigration; thattheadmissionofimmigrantsbenefitsnotthem alone,butusandourcountryalso:thatsuchmutual benefitingaccordswiththe sacredbondsofhuman kinship.
Thereisaconsolingcoincidenceintheissuingof thisStatementwiththe HolyFather'sproclamation oftheMarianYear.

Allduringlastyearthe menemployedonthejob patientlyborewiththedisconcerting,thoughinterested,queriesofthestudents fromthetimethefoundations,110tonsofconcrete, werelaid,andthefirstof thethousandsofbrickstobe utilisedwassetinplaceby theRector.

Thelargeandquitemodern-lookingdormitorywas builttohousetwelvestudents,butatpresentonly sevenstudentsenjoythis privilege.

Theirhighstandardofqualitynevervaries
Presbyterianismwas brought,from1617onwards, bytheEnglishPuritansand bylaterimmigrationfrom ScotlandandNorthIreland. ThefirstorganisedPresbyterywasconstitutedatPhiladelphiain1706,developingintoaregularlyestablishedSynodin1717.
The"WestminsterConfession,"togetherwiththe LargerandShorterCatechismsoftheWestminster Divines,wasadoptedasthe doctrinalstandard;andAmericanPresbyterianismbecamethetheologicalstrongholdoforthodoxProtestantismintheUnitedStatesfor almosttwocenturies.
ButevenPresbyterianism hasnotbeenabletoresist disintegrationfromcauses bothwithinandwithoutthe Church.In1861Presbyteriansweredividedbythe slaveryissue,leadingtothe separationoftheSouthfrom theNorth.
Moreover,"Fundamentalism"hasagitatedPresbyterianismasotherProtestant Churches,andBiblicalliteralismhasbeendiscardedby many,whilsttherehave beenmanychangesindoctrine,worship,anddiscipline.

Titohasnotbyanymeans movedfurtherapartfrom theSoviet.Indeed,inrecentmonthsthereisatone inYugoslavpropaganda whichisprofoundlydisquietinginthatitsuggests Titomayseekarapprochementwithhiserstwhile masters.TheAmericans, too,ofcourse,havegiven vastdollaraidtoYugoslavia, butwedon'trecallanyprotestsfromthe"Economist" onthatscore.

But,ofcourse,ifone wantedaclassicinstanceof givingaboosttoadictator, onewouldnotneedtolook furtherthantherecentreturnfromRussiaofBritish businessmenwithL400,000,000sterlingworthof orders.ItwouldsometimesappearthattheEnglishmentalityisalittle over-developedinfavourof England.WhatAmericais doinginmanycountriesis intheinterestsofthedefenceofthefreeworld;
Britain'saimswouldappear tobeinthecategoryofpersonal"safetyfirst"measures. Mr.Dorset'sreflections onSpain'srelationswiththe ArabStatesaremorethan alittlenaive.Histalkof Spain'semergingfromdiplomaticquarantineisrather likethepatientaccusingthe doctor.Whileheadmits that"it(Spain)hasemergedastheallyand ofthemostpowerfulaCommunistpower,"bestill pratesoftheserelationsas "exploitation,"and"cutting afigure"intheMediterranean. Whatishappeninginfact isofverygreatimportance toEuropeandtotheworld. Islamhas,inthepast,been averygreatmenacetoEuropeancivilisation.And Islamwillriseagain.It willbeverymuchinour interestifitbecomesa greatpowerunderSpanish tutelage.Itisunhappy thatFrancewouldappear tobeattemptingapolicyof unilateralcolonialdomination. ButifSpaincanunite andleadtheMoslemworld, weshallhaveaninvaluable ally,intheinevitableshowdownwiththeSoviet.And Islam,afterall,believesin God.ItmaybeSpain's destinytopavethewayfor theinfiltrationofChristianity.
Another"concession" whichwassoughtfromTito bothduringandafterhis Londonvisitwastheeasing ofthepersecutionoftheCatholicChurchinYugoslavia. Whiletheusualpolitical evasionswereliberallypractisedonbothsides,statementsfromSirWinston Churchillgaverisetothe hopethatTitowouldyield onthepoint.Instead,on hisreturnhome,therewas, ifanything,anintensificationofpressureonthe Church.Certainlynothing resemblingfreedomforreligionemerged.Itwas justanotherboostgone wrong. Likewise,Britaindidnot hesitatetogiveaboostto thedictatorofChina,MaoTsetung.DespiteacuteembarrassmenttoherAllies, sherushedintorecognise hisCommunistgovernment asthelegalauthorityinthe hopeoftradingpreferences.
WhathappenedatDuntroonduringtheceremony oftheconsecrationofthe coloursisanexampleof thekindofembarrassment towhichCatholicservice andex-servicemenare constantlybeingexposedin thiscountry.Inanyceremonyofanationalcharacter,wheremenandwomenofallreligionsareentitledtoparticipate,itis palpablyunfairtoarrange areligiousceremonyunacceptabletosome,eventoa minority,ofthoseparticipating.Yetinvariablya ceremonyAnglicanincharacter,isimposedonsuch occasions.
Itcannotbepleadedthat theauthoritieswereignorantoftheresentmenttheir acquiescenceinsuchanarrangementwouldcause,becausestrongofficialrepresentationfromtheCatholic sidehadbeenmadeovera similarftinctionatLavertoninSeptember,1952. Moreover,thereisinvolved abreachofsection116of theAustralianConstitution. Now,despiteassurances fromthePrimeMinister, Catholicswouldliketosee thenewpolicyincorporated inroutineordersforall branchesoftheservices,so thattheywouldhaveadefinitiveguide. Moreover,itisalltoo
readilyassumedthat,atall officialfunctionsrequiring thepresenceofaclergyman, apAnglicanshouldbe chosentoofficiateasof right.SurelythatistoassumethattheChurchof EnglandenjoystheprivilegesofanEstablished Church.Suchanassumptionisutterlyunwarranted, asunderthelawallfaiths areregardedasonanequal footing.Thisinsinuation hasbeenproceedingquietly inourlargenewspapersfor sometimeinthetreatment ofCathokcdignitariesand inthehandlingofCatholic news.
Oneverypracticalimplementationofthisfictitious assumptionistobeseenin theobservanceofAnzac Day,whichisinvariably conductedasaChurchof Englandservice.TheprocedureoutlinedbyArchbishopMannixandaccepted bytheFederalCabinet couldeasilybefollowed here.AnzacDaycouldand shouldbeobservedinthe churchesinthemorning whilethelaterobservance shouldbecompletelynationalandsecular.One wonderswhysuchacommonsensesolutionisnot snappedupinordertocontributetorealnational unity.

ReducingMortality

Theretheytoldeverybody,andveryloudlytoo, howhappytheywere.The oldonesweregladthat theirfamilywassafely rearedandtheyoungones weregladtobealive.So theyraisedtheirvoices andlaughtedatthewhole world.
LaughingatHim
Tom'feltthatthekookaburraswerelaughingat himforbeingstillinbedon suchalovelysummermorning,sohejumpedoutof bedandwassoonreadyto joinhiscousin,George, whohadahorsesaddled andwaswaitingtotake himforamorningride.
Georgeknewwheretheywouldseesomekangaroos feedingintheearlymorningnearthecreek.Both boysenjoyedthegallopthroughthepaddocks,and, astheycameneartheline ofpinetreesthatmarked thecourseofthecreek, theysawhalfadozen kangaroosalmosthiddenin thelonggrass.
Thesewerethefirst wildkangaroosthatTom hadseenandhewaseager togivethemchase,but theyquicklyhoppedacross thebedofthecreekand disappearedinthebush.
Tomwantedtoknow moreaboutkangaroosand, afterbreakfast,Georgetook himouttoapetonewhich
hadtherunofthelawns andthetenniscourt. Georgetoldhimthatkangarooswereoncetobe foundinallpartsofAustraliaandTasmania.
Afull-growngreykangarooweighsaboutas muchasawell-grownman. Thereare,however,many smallerkinds.
"Seehowsmallthehead is,"saidGeorge."Itbecomesthinnertowardsthe muzzleandtheearsare largeandupright.Likethe deer,thekangarooisa timidanimalandhasnot onlygoodearsbutkeen eyesandafinesenseof smell."
Thepetkangaroohopped uptotheboysandtooka pieceofbreadfromTom's hand.Tomstrokedthe greyishbrownsoftfurthat coversallthebodyand makesitdifficulttonotice inthedrygrass.
"Lookattheforeleg;" saidGeorge."Ithasfive strongclaws,butthehindleghasonlyfourtoesand twooftheseareboundtogethersoastoappearone. Oneoftheclawsonthe hindlegisofgreatsizeand withasinglestrokeanold mankangaroocaneasily killadog."
"Doeshespringoffhis tailwhenhehops?"asked Tom.
"No,"saidGeorge."Noticehowhehopsonhis hindtoes,usinghistailto balancethebody."

Whenthekangaroois grazingitlooksawkward butassoonasitliftsitself upandbeginstohop,we muchadmireitsgraceful movements.
Amobofkangaroosin fullrunisaprettysight. Whenmovingeasilythey coverabouttenfeetineach leap,butakangaroohas beenknowntocleartwentyfivefeetinonehop.They canleaphighaswellasfar, andhavebeenseentoclear afencesevenfeethigh.
Themotherkangaroo keepstheyoungonesina pouchunderherbody.The littleonescomeouttograze orplay,butassoonas dangerisscentedtheyhop intothepouchandthe motherboundsquickly away.
Kangarooslikecompany andaregenerallytobe seeninmobs.Theyliequiet mostoftheday,butfeedat sunsetandintheearly morning.

Therewereoncetwochildren,namedSueandBilly, wholivedinabeautiful littlecottage.Onedaytheirmothersaidtothem: "YourfatherandIaregoingtoSydney,soyouand Billymuststayatyour aunty'stillwecomeback."
Sothenextdaytheystartedtopack.IntheafternoontheysetoffforSydney. Itwasalongwaitbefore thetrainarrived.Soabout 7p.m.thetraindrewinat thestation.SueandBilly weregladtoseethemoffat last.
Whentheyweregoing homeafterseeingtheirparentsoff,theysawaman runningafterthem,sothey ranasfastastheycould.
Hecametoaparkand stoppedtohavearestfor awhile.WhenBillysaw hewasinthepark,thetwo childrenhidbehindatree.
Soonafterthatthetramp ranintoahouseandcame outwithasackoverhis backandranovertothe parkagainanduntiedhis sack. Thechildrensawsome thingsthatlookedlike jewels.SueandBillybecamescared,andsaid,"Let's goandringthepolice." Billyrangthepolice.
