tury,and.intheearlier yearsofthisone,andI couldgoontopraiseothers oftheirachievements.But Idon'tthinkthisisreally thekindofthingyou_have inmind.

DecadentSigns youwrite: "LookingthroughaselectionofSovietdressstyles forwomeninajournal,I observedthatMODESTY seemedtobethefirstconsideration.IalsosawapictureofsomeWesternand Russiandiplomatswiththeir wivesataneveningfunction.ThedressoftheRussianwomenwasmodest anddecorousincontrastto thesemi-nudityofthedemocraticladies."

A.:Ithinkitwouldbe truertosaythattheSoviet regimediscourageswomen fromattachingmuchimportancetoelegancein dress.Thecultoffashion andtheparadesofnew stylesinthegreatestablishmentsofLondonand Parisarelookeduponby theSovietmentorsofpresent-dayRussiaasbeing symptomsofbourgeoisdecadence-althoughthereis someevidencethatacertainmildemulationisbeing allowedtomanifestitself discreetlyhereandthere.

ButtheplainnessandsimplicityofthedressesfamouredforwomeninCommunistRussiaisnotanexpressionofanyhighermorality;itsimplymeansthat, onthewhole, thosewho maintaintheregimehave decidedthatitisbetterto directtheenergiesofthe womenintochannelsof greatereconomicsignificance.ThePartywasnot muchinterestedinseeing RussianwomenrivalthesocietylightsoftheWestern world;itwasverymuchinterestedinseeingthatthey filledtheirquotasofwork inthefactoriesandonthe collectivefarms.

Therewasnorealplace intheirsystemforelegance ofdressassomethingof valueinitself;whatthe Frenchcall'lahautecouture"(dressmakingasa fineart)wasjustsomething thatwoulddistractwomen fromtheirwork.Ifthere arenowSovietfashion journals,youcanbesure thattheyaremainlyforexport:travellerstoRussia cantellyouhowthewomen dressthere-anditisnotso muchthemodestyasthe dowdinessthatseemstoimpressthem.

LicenceatStart

WithregardtotheSoviet attitudetowardsquestions ofmodesty,chastity,etc., thetruthofthematter,as Iseeit,isthis:Atthebeginningoftheregimethere waspracticallyunbridled licence.Marriage,aswe understanditintheWest, Theirhighstandardofqualitynevervaries

SHAKESPEARE:His=expurgatedtextsarenotput intothehandsofchildren oftenderage. waslookeduponasabourgeois(i.e.,capitalist)institution,andthepeoplewere encouragedtoemancipate themselvesfromit.There wasaperiodofappalling immorality,ofwhichyou canseeplentyofevidenceandverydisgustingevidence,too-intravellers'accountsofthe1920's.

However,thepolicywas laterswitched.Marriage andmaritalfidelitywerereinstatedinaplaceofhonour-notthroughanyconcessiontoChristianmorality,butsimplyintheinterestofgreaterefficiencyand socialstability.Idon't thinkthattheSovietrulers attachanyabsolutevalueto sexualmoralityatall;they simplyfindthat,onthe whole,itworksbetterifthe emphasisonsexinpublic lifeiswithdrawn.Andas, ofcourse,thereismuch abuseinthismatterinthe Westerncountries,thecontrastgivesthepropagandistsoftheSovietregimean opportunityofposingas sternandrighteousmoralists.

However, wehaveseen plentyofinstancesinthe fairlyrecentpastwhich makeitquiteclearthatthey areprepared, atanymoment, toholdouttheprospectofcompletesexual licenceasanincitementto revolution:thiswasnotably thecaseinthepolicyadoptedinSpainintheperiod immediatelyprecedinsthe CivilWarof1936andduringthewaritself.

A.:Iamsurprised,and,to tellyouthetruth,alittle shocked,attheattitudeyou havechosentotaketowards thenarrativeportionsofthe OldTestament.Fromyour signature,Iseethatyouare amarriedwoman;andfrom this,surely,Ihavetheright todeducethatbynowyou shouldhaveattainedacertainedmaturityofoutlook aswellasyears.

Icanonlyexplainyour attitudetomyselfbymakingtwosuppositions.In thefirstplace,Ithinkit quitelikelythatyouarenot altogethersincerelyexpressingyourownreactionstowardsthepassages,say,in theBookofGenesis,which youhaveinmind.Youare thinking,rather,ofwhat childrenintheirearlyteens maymakeofsuchpassages; sothatwhatyousayabout thiselementintheScripturesdoesnotexpressyour realopinionasanadultpersonsomuchasyoursolicitudeforthedelicacyand

ReverentTone

Asamatteroffact,I thinkthatanybodywithany literarysensewouldfindthe narrativesoftheOldTestamentverybeautifulindeed -notexceptingthosepassageswhichyouhavein mind(oncetheseareseen intheperspectiveofthe wholestory).

If,insteadofallowing yourselftobeshockedby thekindofforthrightness andsimplicitywhichisnot considered"nice"nowadays,ytAsallowedyourself tosinkintothesenarratives,experiencingsomethingofthereverenceand beautyoftheirtone,andenteringintotheprofound backgroundofreligious feelingagainstwhichthey arewritten,Iamsureyou wouldthinktwicebefore applyingtothemsuchtotallyunsuitableepithetsas "lush,"orfindinginthem any"fondnessforfleshly incidents."Icannotthink ofanyliteraturewhichisso removedfromthecoarse sniggering,prurientexcitability,ormorbidcuriosity, whicharetherealmarksof thepornographic.

NotfortheYoung However, onceyouraise thequestionofthesuitabilityofcertainportionsofthe OldTestamentforyoung readers, thematterisonan entirelydifferentfooting.
