HolyYearIntentions

Theyprobablyknew,said theArchbishop,thatthe Serviteshadtakenaprominentpartinpreparingthe wayforthedefinitionofthe dogmaoftheAssumption, buttheyprobablydidnot knowthecircumstances underwhichtheOrderhad cometoAustralia.

Itsohappened,continued HisGrace,thataCatholic manfromPerthwasvisitingLondonduringHoly Year.HevisitedtheServitechurchinFulham-road, wherehemetthesuperior.

Onascertainingthathe camefromAustralia,the superiortoldhimthatit wasthegreatwishofthe ServiteOrder,andtheir particularintentionduring HolyYear,thattheywould getafoundationinAustralia.Themanreturnedto Perthanddeliveredhis message,Negotiationswere commencedimmediatelyand theyknewtheresult.

TheArchbishopsaidhe feltsurehewasexpressine, thesentimentsoftheCatholicsoftheArchdiocesewhen hesaidtheywerehonoured thattheyhadbeenchosen asthespecialinstruments ofOurLadyinfurthering herdesigns,inhelpingto

Morethan70delegatesrepresenting 20branchesoftheYoungChristianWorkers'Movementexpressedtheirideasonsubjectsrangingfrommovementtechniquesto indecentliteratureatthethirdannualState conferenceofthemovementlastweek-end.

Hethankedparticularly Mr.JimmydelPianoand the"busybees"providedby theparishioners.Father Nolanthenreadthelistof donations,whichwillbe publishedinthesecolumns onOct.8.

Thecertaintyofhisvocationtothepriesthoodand thereligiouslifehasbeen growing,andduringthe Aquinasprocessionof1945 hetookthedecision.By acuriouscoincidencehewill beordainedontheeighth anniversaryofhischoice. Appropriately,too,inview ofthelocaleof'hisdecision, hedeterminedtobecomea FatheroftheBlessedSacrament.In1946heentered

Thesecretary'sreportrevealedthatthemembership oftheMovementhasfallen, despitethefactthatthere are23leaders'groupsand 14generalbranches.

Membershipwasdiscussedatlengthafterthereport,andwaysandmeans ofincreasingitweredecided. Thetreasurer'sreport showedthatthefinancesof themovementareinafair position.

ThechairmanoftheAssociatedYouthCommittee oftheNationalFitness Council(Dr.J.L.Rossiter)visitedthelastpartofthe conferenceandsaidafew wordsofencouragementto themovement. Rev.BrotherHanrahanwasbornatSt. Bathans,NewZealand,andreceivedhis latereducationatChristianBrothers'college,Dunedin,wherehewasacontemporaryofMostRev.J.M.Liston,D.D.,Bishop ofAuckland.

Undertheguidinginfluenceofhisteacher,the lateRev.Br.B.F.Magee, hedecidedtobecomea ChristianBrotherandenteredthenovitiateinGeelonginJanuary1893.Inhis earlyyearshetaughtat GregoryTerrace,Brisbane, LewishamHighSchool,St. Patrick'sCollege,Goulburn, St.Kilda,PerthandFremantle,wherehewasSuperior.

Whenregistrationof teacherswasmadecompulsoryinVictoria,theProvincialselectedBr.Hanrahantotakechargeofthe newly-establishedTrainingCollegeatStrathfield, N.S.W.,wherehewasto

Parliament.Hewasalways prominentattheCatholic Teachers'Conferencesat whichhereadmanyfine papers.AttheNational CatholicEducationCongress inAdelaidein1936heread anotablepaperonthe teachingofChristianDoctrine.Hewasaregular contributortothepublicationsoftheChristian Brothers,"OurStudies"and the"EducationalRecord", hisfavouritetopicsbeing theliturgyandtheMass. HistermofofficeasProvincialwasmarkedbygreat progress.Newcommunities wereestablishedatHighton (Vic.),Bindoon,Mt.Henry, Highgate,Leederville(W. A.),Abergowrie,Indooroopilly,Yeppoon(Q.),Chatswood,Leura,RoseBay, Minto(N.S.W.),Auckland (N.Z.).BrotherHanrahan wasamanofwidescholarshipwithanexceptional memory.Thesequalities combinedtomakehima veryableconversationalist onalmostanytopic,though philosophyremainedhis favourite.Hewassimple, affable,deeplyreligiousand extremelyexactinthe performanceofeveryduty. Heplayedabigpartinthe governmentofhisCongregationandwaselectedto theGeneralChaptersin Dublinin1920and1947,and hewasamemberofevery

Sin-Thispastweek,in thecourseofscanningpaperscomingintomyhousehold,Ihavereceivedtwo shocks.Inthefirstplace yoursupportoflonger drinkinghours,withthe suggestionthatafather shouldleavehishouseregularlyintheeveningtogo outandget'afewdrinks' scarcelymatchesupwith thecommonideaofthe behaviourofafatherina Christianhomeandmust beroundlycondemnedas anirresponsibleeditorialbibulationwhichhasthesole savinggracethatbeingan editorialitwillprobablygo unreadbymost. Inthesecondplaceinpe- rusinga devotedpapernominally totheretailingof wirelessprogrammesIfind itis lishingquiteblantantlypubprovocativeillustrationsofanimmodestnature.

Thesimperingalusivenessof theletterpressthataccompaniestheseillustrations leavesnodoubtofthementalattitudeofthepeople whoareresponsibleforthis kindofinvasionofthe commondecencywhichone expectsinapurelyutilitarianpaper.

LetterstoEditor

Animmediatereactionto publicationsofsuchcharacteristocanceltheirdeliveryonthegroundsthat theyfostereverypossible aspectofsinscommitted againstpurityofmindand body.Andindeediflarge numberofCatholicstook suchactionandtroubledto writetoeditorsinappreciablenumbersagreatdeal ofthepornographywhich iscreepingmoreandmore intoordinarypublications, officecalendarsandtherest couldbechecked.

rsForinstancethesalacious typesofofficecalendarcould beeliminatediftheywer returnedonreceiptwitha notethatthereceiverwas notinterestedindealing withafirmwhosepublicity executiveshadunhealthy sexobsessions.

Itcanbesuggestedthat thepresentwideandincreasinglywidedistribution ofprintedandillustrated pornographycanundermine themoralityofthewhite, non-communistnationson whomthisonslaightisbeing loosed.Ontheotherhand theviewcanbetakenthat

thereissomuchofitthat therisinggenerationwill getsoaccustomedtoitthat theywillceasetotakeany interestinit:inconsequencetherewillbeanaturalrecessionofthepresentspateofpornography.

WhyNoAttack?

Ifthislatterviewiscorrectthenitisunwisefor anindividualtoattemptto protecthischildrenfrom pornographicintrosions intoordinarypapersonthe groundsthattheywill meetsomuchofitinthe worldthatifitistreatedas commonplaceinthehome andasessentiallyfoolish theywillbearmedagainst itwhenthemeetitoutside.

Afterallnudityisinrealityuncouthanduncomfortableasindeedlike modernfashionswhichtry toapproachthestateof nuditywithoutquiteattainingthelimitsofcomplete absurdityandindecency.

Ifontheotherhandall thispresentdaypornographyisasseriousathingas wouldhavebeenthoughta generationbackwhydoes nottheCatholicChurchand especiallytheAmericanand AustralianHierarchiesmake anoutrightattackonitby meansofencyclicalsanda directandspecificinterdict throughanindexonany' publicationswhichoffend canonsofdecency?Suchan attackcouldseriouslycurtailsalesanddistributionof manyborder-linemagazines and aneffecttowhich noindividualactioncould aspire.

HonestDisregard

Ifthisthingisamajor evilthenitcallsforaforthrightandacontinuedmajor attack.Sincenosuchcondemnationisforthcoming, manylikemyselfmust wonderwhatgoodindividualactioncanachieveand whetherindeedinaworld ofitincreasinglicentiousness iswisenottotakeevery opportunitytobuildupin childrenanhonestdisregardaswellastheirspi- ritualdefencestowhatis rapidlybecomeacommonplaceinalmostanyand everytypeofprintedpublication.

Legallyspeaking,the CatholicChurchinAlbania hasceasedtoexist.Only oneBishopremainsalive there,andheisnotpermittedtofunction.Religious Ordershavebeensuppressed,andtheirpropertyconfiscated.Therearenolonger anyCatholicschoolsor newspapers.CatholicAction hasbeenoutlawed,andlarge numberofpriests,nunsand Brothershavebeenkilled, imprisonedorbanished fromthecountry.

Everyweaponofterror andintimidationhasbeen usedbytheCommuniststo wipeoutCatholicismin Albania.Thatthisefforthas notsucceededisduetothe tenacityandcourageofthe faithfulofthisstrategically locatedmountainouscountry atthesouth-easternshoreof theAdriaticSea.

TheAlbanianCatholicstheynumberhardlymore than150,000ofthenation's onemillionpopulation-belongtotheGhegtribeand arefoundinthemostinaccessiblepartsofthenorthernmountains.

TheGhegChristiansofthe NortharemainlyCatholics, whiletheChristiansofthe SouthbelongtotheAlbanian OrthodoxChurchwhichfive yearsagoacceptedthejurisdictionoftheMoscowPatriarchateoftheRussian OrthodoxChurch.

Cutoffentirelyfrom Romeandfromallcontact withtheWesternworld, theGhegsaretodayprobablythemostisolated groupofCatholicsinexistence.Butenoughinformationhasfilteredthroughthe IronCurtaintoconvince outsidersthatthesepeople arestillstaunchlywithstandingRedattemptsto forcethemfromtheir Catholicallegiance.

Accordingtoreports,the comparativelyfewactive priestsmustcarryontheir ministryinsecret.ButwherevertheycansayMassor leadthepeopleinprayer,

theyhavefoundsuchaspiritofdevotionasclearlyto indicatethatifCatholicism itselfistobeuprootedin Albania,alltheGhegswill havetobekilledoff.Not allGhegsareCatholics, thoughallCatholicsare Ghegs.Butthenon-Catholic Ghegsgiveloyalsupportto theirIe1lowtribesmen. Meanwhile,Catholicismcontinuestobeaguidinginfluenceintheconductofthe Ghegs'tribalaffairs.

Thepersecutionofthe CatholicChurchinAlbania cannotberelaxedeven temporarily-sotheReds argue-becauseitisdeeply connectedwiththetribalsituation.PremierEnver Hoxha,theheadofthe communistregime,belongs totheTosks,theleading tribeoftheSouth,manyof whosemembersareMoslem, andtherestEasternorthodox.

Itwasbecausehecould notexterminatetheGhegs thatPremierHoxhaattemptedafewyearsagoto setupaschismatic"AlbanianCatholicChurch."This strategy,however,failedto wintheGhegsfromtheir loyaltytotheHolySee. Theironlyresponsewasto showopencontemptofany attempttoherdtheminto a"church"thatwouldbe tiedhandandfoottothe communistgovernment.

TherecentdeathofimprisonedArchbishopNicola VincenzoPrennushiofDurazzohasleftonlyone Catholicprelateinthecountry-78-year-oldBishop BernardineShiakuofPulati, whoisconfinedtohisresidenceatKoderShen GjergjiintheNorth.Two otherprelateswereexecuted bytheReds-BishopFrancis GjiniofAlessionandBishop GeorgeVolajofSappa. Adultconvertsduringthe twelvemonthsuptoSeptemberamountedto10,669. whileinfantbaptismsnumbered5,716.Thiscomparedwith12,178conversions and5,605infantbaptisms intheprecedingyear.A totalof24,359catechumens weretakinginstructionsat thetimethereportwas published.

Intheyear1842,there wasimprisonedatPortAr-thuramannamedMartin Cash.Hewassixfoottall, astrongman,witharuddy complexionandcarrot-colouredhair.Atthistime hewas32.AtPortArthur hewasservingasentence forattemptedmurder. Whenthishadexpired,he wassenttoTasmania,or VanDieman'sLand,asit wasthencalled.

AtVanDieman'sLandhe tooktofarming.Peace,however,didnotprevail,for herehemetupwithanotherex-convict,andwas arrestedforhavingstolen goodsinhispossession,and subsequentlysentencedto gaolwithhardlabour.

Aftertwounsuccessfulattemptstoescape,hefinally managedtoswimacross EaglehawkBay,whichincidentallywasfullof sharks.Onceacrossit,he joinedupwithtwofellow convicts,andthereandthen beganhisreignoflooting andplunder.

Inthefirstplaceyoumust rememberthatintheearly daysoftheChristianChurch Egyptwasaveryimportantplaceindeed.Thepa- triarchalseeofAlexandria rankedwithJerusalem, Antioch,andConstantinople, yieldingprideofplaceonly toRome.GreatChristian theologiansand'saints,like ClementofAlexandria, Origen,St.Athanasius,and St.CyrilofAlexandria,had taughtthere,andEgyptas awholewasfamousforits hermitsandmonasticcommunities.Unfortunately,the veryconsciousnesswhich theAlexandrianEgyptians hadofthisimportance,was toleadtotrouble. ManyCatholicsomitthe dailyrosaryaltogether.ObviouslyIdonotknowall thereasonssuchpeoplehave forthisomission.ButIdo knowsomeofthereasons ofmanyofthem.Itseems onlyfairtogivethesereasonsconsideration,andnot tobealwayslookingatonly onesideofthequestion.To presentthissideofthecase objectively,withoutdefendingitorblamingit,isthe purposeofthepresent article.

Indiscussingthereasons fornon-attendanceatthe eveninggroup-rosaryin church,Ishallnotattempt toexplainwhysomepeople prefertosaythedailyrosaryprivately;norwhy somewholefamilieschoose tostayathomeandsaythe familyrosary.Thesepeople havetheirapologists.

Iwriteonbehalfofan indefinitenumberofCatholicswhodonotsaythe rosaryeitherathomeorin church.Theirreasonsfor thismoreorlesstotalneglectoftherosaryshouldin allfairnessbeconsidered andevaluated.

EveningDiversions

Firstofall,manyofthese peoplebelievetheydonot havetimefortheparish eveningrosary.Therearek somanythingsthatmustbe doneintheevening.There isthenewspapertoread. Onemustreadthepopular features.Itisnecessaryto keepupwiththeopinionsof theexperts.Well,perhaps notnecessary.Atleastitis useful.Itcouldsaveone thetroubleofformingan opinionofhisown.News items,suchasanaccident inthesuburbsoramurder, mustbereadindetail.The societypageorthesports pageorthefinancialsheet mustbescanned,according tointerestorambition.

Favouriteprogrammeson radiodemandattention.Our associateswillbetalkingof thesetomorrow.Afriend mustbecelledonthephone. Itistheminimumoffriendshipto friendsharewithyour newsofcurrentinterest,suchasanencounter withanobstinatetrafficcop ortheprogressofthechildren'scolds.

Anotherreasonmanydo notjointheparishgroup fortherosaryisthat,though theywouldliketodoso, theyhavenevermadea beginning.Generallythey donotthinkofit,ordonot thinkofitattherighttime. Inotherwords,theylack thebenefitofhabit.They haven'tthehabitbecause theyhaveneverstarted; andtheyneverstartbecause theydonothavethehabit tostartthemoff.Thereis asortofviciouscircle,it istrue,inthisbehaviour,or lackofbehaviour.AsI haveremarked,Iamnot passingjudgment;Iam simplytryingtosetforth thesituationfairlyandobjectively.

Thenthereisalotof troubleandinconvenience

involvedinmakingthetrip tochurcheachevening.One mayhavetoleavesomeinterestingworkordiversion, andthatrequiressacrifice. Wemaketheselittlesacrificesadozentimesadayfor naturalobjectives,butthat isdifferent.Idonotknow exactlywhatthedifference is,butmanywillassureme thatthereisadifference.

Evenafterthebreak-away fromtheoccupationofthe moment,departurefor churchandreturnare complexandannoying.We mustassumecoatandhat, mustlockthedooronleav-

mustwalktothecar, stepintothecaranddrive tothechurch(orwalkthe shortdistance,asthecase maybe).Aftertherosarytheseoperationsmustbe reversed,eventothelast detailofremovinghatand coat.Itisalotoftrouble, atryingexperience.

Anotherreasongivenis thattherosaryistooshort adevotiontojustifyaspe- cialtriptothechurch.The brevityofthedevotion seemstomakeitunimportant.Iwilltrytodevelopthisreasonimpartiallybyreviewingwithfairapproximationwhattakesplacein thisdevotion.Thismayhelp tobringitsimportanceor unimportanceintofocus. forAfterenteringthechurch eveningrosary,onewill inallprobabilitygreetOur LordintheBlessedSacra mentwithanactofhumble adoration.Heorshewillsee (withtheeyesoffaith)the angelsbowedinadoration aboutthetabernacle.Our BlessedMotheristhere, smilingandeagertoreceive herchildren'spraiseand prayer.

BenefitofRosary Priestandpeoplebegintherosary.Theymakepub- licprofessionoftheirfaith intheApostles'Creed.As theysaytheHailMarysvocally,theymentallyponder someoftheprincipalevents ofourLady'slifeonearth. Theytrytopenetratemore fullythemeaningoftheAnnunciation,theNativityor Calvary.Theystudythe greatvirtuesofourLady:herfaith,hercharity,her patience,courage,devotion. "DearLord,makemealittle likethat,"theyinstinctively pray.

Sixtimestheyprayin theOurFatherthatGod's kingdommaycome,thatHis willmaybedoneonearth asitisinheaven.Fifty-threetimestheypraiseour Ladyasfullofgrace,as blessedamongallwomen. Fifty-threetimestheyask thatsheprayforthemnow andatthehouroftheir death.

Sometimeduringthis exercise,perhapsfrequently, theparticipantsmaketheir personalpetitionstoour

Lady.Whentherosaryis finished,ourBlessedMother, wemayproperlyimagine, immediatelypresentsthese requeststoherDivineSon, endorsingthepetitionsof herchildrenwithamother's bias.PerhapsourRedeemer disposesofthesepetitionsduringthelongvigilofthe night,whentheonlyvisible signofHispresenceisthe flickeringlightofthesanctuarylamp.Thatisnotall,ofcourse, thatthereistotherosary. Icannot,andnoonecan, tellallthatoccursinprayer. Thingsofthespiritareimmeasurable.Ihavenot mentionedtheaddedgrace andstrength-oftenpercep- tiblestrength-whichfollow fromtherosarywellsaid.I presumetoaddthatoneis alittlebitnearertoChrist andHisMotherafterthis devotion.
