IrishClubStagesSoccerGame, SportsMeetatYanchepPark

YanchepParkwasthe venueonSundaylastfor thefirstofaseriesofpicnicsorganisedbytheIrish clubmembersforthesummermonths.Alengthy programme,whichincluded tennis,athleticevents,and asoccermatch,wascarried outwithoutahitch.

Mt.HawthornA.F.C. memberswereguestsofthe IrishClub,anddefeatedthe ShamrockRovers,3-1.The ShamrockRovers,sponsoredbytheIrishclub,have wontheirdivisionofthe leagueinaverycreditable performance,itbeingtheir firstyearincompetitive football.

Theprogrammeconcludedwithtwohoursofdancingandcommunitysinging inYanchephall.Thelarge attendanceofmorethan200 wereloudintheirpraiseof

thearrangements,anda gooddaywasvotedbyall.

Thenextoutingwillbe themostpopular,whenthe clubmemberspaytheir annualvisittotreattheboys atBindoonBoys'Town.The dateforthetripisOct.11, andpatronsareadvisedto makeapplicationtothe secretarywithoutdelayfor tickets,astransportaccommodationisstrictlylimited.

Theproofofthisassertionisapracticalone.Itis truethatEnglish-speaking Masonr,claimsthatbelief intheGreatArchitectof theUniverseisoneofthe mostimportantancient landmarksoftheorder:but thebeliefissovagueand symbolicalthatalmost everykindofatheismmay becoveredbyit.Again, equalprominence,isgiven totheprincipleoflibertyof consciencewhichcuts acrossanydogmatictheism intheChristiansense.Indeedthereismorethanone utteranceintheMasonic

Sir,-SincethearrangmentsfortheFeastof ChristtheKingprocession arenowbeingdiscussed considerationcanvaluably begiventothedefectsof thepresentwayofconductingtheprocessionandtheir amelioration.

Thereisconsiderableneed sincetheattendancehas nowrisentosuchnumbers thatitbecomes,yearby year,increasinglyapparent thatthefunctionhasnow outgrownthearrangements whichhavebeeninvogue sincetimeswhentheprocessionwasagooddeal smaller.

ShufflingCrocodile

Atthepresenttimethe laityfilesbeforethealtar, shufflesthroughthesand atthebackofthepavilion inalongslow-movingattenuated'crocodile',isthen counted,photographedand commentedonbyacollectionofofficialandunofficialspectatorsandthen againfilesbeforethemain altarbeforereturningto fieldpositions.Ratherirreverentlywepasstwicebeforethemainaltarwithout genuflecting.

Whenthispartofthe functioniscompleted,the clergyprocessingwiththe BlessedSacramentleavethe ovalandfollowthesame ratherpurposelessroute. Duringallthistimethe Rosaryisrecitedthrougha numberofloudspeakersalternatingwithsomerather untunefulsingingofhymns solothroughthesame agency.

Attheendoftheceremonyasermonispreached throughthesameamplificationschemewhichisone inwhichthespeakersare sodisposedthattheyinterferesonicallywithone anothertoamaximumextent;sothat,nodoubt,some verywell-chosenandinspiredwordsfinishupasthe normalunintelligible"'blabing"whichhasgrowntobe the risticpredominantcharacteofallmodernloud speakeroratory.

Dealingwiththelastevil first,Iwouldsuggestthat theloud-speakersystembe confinedtocentralbattery ofamplifiers,givingoutthe wordfromonhightothe fourquartersoftheovalortoeight-eightsofitifso muchisrequiredtoprovide fullsoniccoverage. Astotheprocession.I suggestthatthisbemade intoarealprocessionby

manualsthatgoestosuggest thatbeliefintheGreat Architectismerelysymbolicandexpedienttofurther theworkofthelodges.

WhatIlikeaboutmen whobecomeCabinetMinistersistheirassumptionof Olmypiancalmbywhich theybecomeimmunefrom publiccriticism-atleast untilelectiontime.The caseIhaveinmindisMr. Graham'sandhisMalenkoviticproposalatSubiaco. Thathehasnotfeltitnecessarytomakeanydefenceof hisgrotesqueproject,arguespresumablythathe couldnotpossiblybewrong andthathiscriticsarea packofobstructionistfools. And,ofcourse,ifhegets awaywiththeSubiacoproject,wecananticipatethe openingofanewflatage. inbothsenses

disposingthelaityalongthe sidesoftheovalflowing liketwohornsfromthe mainaltar.Theclergy, withtheBlessedSacrament, canthenfitintothegap leftbetweenthetwobodies andthewholeconcourse canthenmoveclockwise roundtheovaltoasecond altaratthefarendforan incidentalBenediction,followedbyareturnstillmovingclockwisebacktothe mainaltar.

Inthematterofsinging, astheSalvationarmyand theSocietyofJesusappear tohavelearntinalllands, thereisnothinglikeabrass bandforleadingprocessional,open-airsinging.It isgeneralpracticeinEnglandtousesuchbandsat thegreatCorpusChristi processions.

Suchabandinthecentre ofagroupofchoirs,drawn frombothourchurchesand ourschools,wouldmove roundonacircleinsidethat ofthemainprocession,soas tokeepthewholeofthe laity-onthebeat"inour greatprocessionalhymns.

Withsuchanarrangementsomespontaneousvolumemightbegotintothe hymnsinging,andindeedit mightbepossibletosing, withtheaidofhymnsheets, agreaternumberofhymns infullthanthetwoverses ofperhapsthreehymnsto whichourhymnsingingin processionshasnowdeteriorated.

FlowerStrewing

Perhaps,too,ourschool girlscouldbetaughtto strewflowersproperly.The rightwaytodothisisfor thedoublefileofstrewers towalkforwardthefull lengthofthefileandthen toturnasone,curtesy,and strewtheirpetals.The timingisdonebyonegirl walkingcentrallyatthe head.Girlswalkinginoutsidefilesproviderelays whocancomeinandtake overwhentheflowersof onepairoffilesareexhausted.

About1,400childrenresided attheflats.PerhapsMr. Grahamisunawarethathis figurerepresentsanaverageof2.4childrenperfamily,whereastheAustralian averageisnearingthe three-childfamily.

HowdidBindooncome intobeing?Itallbegan duringtheWarwhenBoys' TownatClontarfwastaken overbytheRAAFforuse asNo.5InitialTraining school.ItwasthenthekindlyBrothersandtheirsmall chargeevacuatedtoBindoontocarveoutforthemselvesanewhomeand erectanotherBoys'Town intheheartofundulating plainsontheir17,000acre bequestproperty.

ItReflectedPeace

Whattheyhavedone sinceisnothingshortof miraculous.TheBrothers andtheirIrishwardswere busilyengagedontheir newestproject-themain building-whenIsawthem. Asstonemasonsthelittle fellowshavenopeer.

andmachinery,allofwhich isajoytobehold.Inthe quadrangletherosebeds hadbeencarefullyandlovinglytendedandwerein fullbloom.Whitecockatoos hadagaintakenpossession ofthelargecentralaviary. Thefour-faceclockinthe towernolongerprodded slavesbacktotasksof training.

Intheclassroomwards theorphanswerequietly beingtutoredbytheBrothersinplaceofthetrainees ofwaryearsbeingthunderedatbylecturers.Isaw againthetraineeswhonot infrequentlyreceivedtelegramssummoningthemto a"funeral"riggedfor Saturdaybystableconnections,theirfacesamaskof anguishastothereception theywouldgetinseeking specialleave.

Theirstand-inswerebarefootedkids,halfsmiling halfcryingafterreceiving"cuts"andnursing theirreddenedpalmsbeneaththeirarmpits.The abultionsbuildingofour dayisnomoreandalong itswallsarecupboardsfor theclothesoftheboys whilefromchromeframes eachhangshistoweland toothbrush.

Behindthemainhallof ourdaywhereunitconcertswereheldandwhere thecanteenwaslocated,is nowanindoorgym.Behind itagainisthenowcomplete lavatoryblock,justbeing builtinourdayandto whichfromtimetotime traineeswereassignedfor buildingduty.Hereonspot markedXforalltime(now avegetablegardenwith sprinklersoverhead)was whereatraineenearly plungedtoanuntimelyend whenacave-inoccurred overasewer.Weoften wonderedwhathisdeath certificatewouldhavecontainedhadhesuccumbed.

Theshickered-looking paintednotice,"Officers Only,"onwhatwastheir bathroom,isstilltherefor theworldtosee.Nearby wasthespotwherea traineeoncetriedtobribe metogethimarejectexaminationpaperwhichhad beenthrownintheWPB afteratrialduplicationrun.
