MaterialismFails
Itispopularlyinsisted thatold-agepensionsshould beincreased,andthatisan issuewhichcanscarcelybe contested.Butevenifgovernmentswerewillingand abletogivetheagedwhat isnecessaryforadecent subsistence,itwouldleave theproblemsofloneliness andlovelessnessuntouched. Andthoseindeedarethe heartofthematter.Itis unhappilytypicalofthe blindnessofmaterialism thatitimaginesthatmoney canopenalldoors.
Theproblemofsenescence isbynomeansnew,butit hasassumedconsiderable proportionsinourdaysand willloomevenlargerin thefuture.Manyfactors, ofwhichbirthpreventionis anotinconsiderableone, havealteredtheage-corn-
positionofoursociety,so thatwefacetheprospectof aneraofunprecedenteddevelopmentwithagenerationthatisheavilymarked withtheyears.
Butastheproportionsof theproblemmount,sodoes thesenseofpublicresponsibilityforitssolution shrink.Onefearsthat here,again,thematerialism thatcrawlslikeamaggot throughourpolitymustacceptculpability.Theaged poorareinthediscardbecausetheyarenolonger economicallyuseful;they representafiscalliability.
MurderasSolvent
Soitisthat,inplaces wherethematerialistphilosophyoflifeismorecourageousinitsconvictions, menarefoundopenlyto advocatetheliquidationof theaged(providedtheyare poor).Thisinhuman,grotesqueandimmoralproposalparadesunderthe nameofeuthanasia,presumablyinthehopethatit willappearscientific.Itis seriouslyproposedtoemploymurderasasocialsolventfortheproblemofthe agedpoor.
Thismonstrousattitude hasnotcomeforwardprominentlyyetinthiscountry,butitwilldevelopas thenumbersofagedpoor increaseandthematerialismofthepeoplecrystallises intounashamedpaganism. Therearedisturbingsymptomsthatthelatterismore widespreadthanisgenerallybelieved,althoughitis, asyetunorganisedandinarticulate.
Thatlargenumbersof agedpoorinthiscitylivein horribleisolationinindifferentrooms,arebarely abletofeedandclothe themselves,andaretoo proudtoseekthecareofinstitutionsis,inagreatmany cases,anappallingreflectionontheirsonsand daughters.Itisnottobe believedforaninstantthat alloreventhemajorityof thesehaplessagedarewithoutoffspring.
RomanticLove
Onefearsthatthereisnot onlyaneglectofsupernaturalcharityinourday,but anevenmorefearsome breakdownofnaturalaffection.Itisplainesttosee inthedreadofmoderncouplestowardchild-birth. Andthelackoflovefor children,whichexhibitsitselfinbirthpreventionis, ironicallyenough,atoncea
majorcauseoftheproblem oftheunwantedagedand alogical,ifinhuman,explanationoftheirneglect. Sincetheywillnotlove thelittleonesintheiroriginalchildhood,itisperhapstoomuchtohopethat theywilllovethosewho havereturnedtochildhood atthelast.Perhapsitis partofthemercyofGod thatHepermitstheagedto returntothatdelicious half-lightwherememoryis notstrongandthepassion ofresentmentnotsoeasily aroused.
But,asanation,we shouldnotbecomplacent aboutourlackofareal familytradition,continuing fromgenerationtogeneration.Theutterlydepravednotionofromanticlove whichisconcernedwiththe isolationoftwopeopleinan uncertainsensualrelationshiphasdonemuchto wrecktherealitiesofmarriage,ofhomelife,andof Christianlove.
Itsmostbitterfruithas beentheenthronementof selfishness.Forluxurylivinghasbecomeasubstitute fortherewardingsacrifices ofrearingchildrenwho wouldmitigatethememory ofdeath.Andthereis certanilynoplaceinthat egotisticalworldforthe parentswhosetoilandsacrificesmadepossibletheir children'slifeofrelative ease.
FamilyContinuity
Theagedarecastofflike agarment-agarmentthe warmthofwhichwaswelcomeenoughintheyears whenchildrenneededand gotprotectionandlove. Theagedarepushedoutof sightlikeareproach,for thatiswhattheymustbe toacallousandhard-heartedgeneration.Theyare jettisonedasafinancialburden,wheneveryclaimof justice,ifnotoflove,would seeksomerecompensefor themoneylavishedonthose whonowcastthemout.

ItwasquitecleartoOzanamthattheselayapostles mustbeproperlyequipped fortheirtask,thatthey

AfterHisGracehadspoken,FatherCowanmadean eloquentappeal,towhicha responseofabout£200was made.FatherPietersaddressedtheNewAustralians inDutch.Heencouraged themtobeasgenerousin theirnewcountryasthey wereinHolland.They shouldlearntosupportthepriestsandtheChurch.
Afterthefunctionanexcellentafternoonteawas servedbytheladies.

HisGracesaidhewas delightedtobeassociated withthefunction,andtobe affordedtheopportunityof congratulatingFatherLeo andhisparishionerson theirsplendidachievement.
Fiveorsixyearsago therewasscarcelyanything inRiverton,justafew housesscatteredthroughout thedistrict,buttoday,due toexcellenttransportfacilities,thedistrictwasforgingahead;withtheprojectednewroadfromMidlandtotheindustrial centretoKwinana,aroad whichwouldpassthrough thedistrict,therewasno doubtthatRivertonwould makeprogressveryrapidly andwouldbecome,inthe notfardistantfuture,a

Untilafewyearsago, continuedHisGrace,the CatholicsofthedistrictattendedQueen'sPark,but Queen'sParkwasalready tooextensiveinarea,and itwasdecidedtoseverit fromtheparentparish,and itwasdecided,verywisely, togiveittothecareofthe SocietyoftheCatholic Apostolate.
FatherLeowasappointed parishpriestandhehadnot sparedhimselfforhis people.Hewasinterested, firstandforemostofcourse, intheirspiritualwelfare, buthewasinterestedalso intheirmaterialwell-being. Anditwasdueentirelyto hisvision,industryand zeal,backedbythewholeheartedandgenerouscooperationofhispeople,that theywereindebtedforthe ceremonytheywereattendingthatafternoon-the blessingofthenewschoolchurch.
HisGracesaidhewas delightedwiththebuilding. Theplanwasanidealone andtheworkmanshipseemedtobeverythorough.He congratulatedMr.S.Costelloandtheworkmenassociatedwithhimonthe excellentjobtheyhaddone.
Consideringtheextentof
thebuilding,theArchbishop saidhethoughtthepriceof £5,000wasveryreasonable,indeed.Itwasasolid, dignifiedandserviceable building.
Thegreaterpartofthe populationconsistedofNew Australians,andHisGrace appealedtothemparticularlytohelpinthework. Hehopedthattheywould takeadvantageofthe splendidspiritualfacilities beingprovidedforthem. Healsohopedthatallwould makesacrificesinorderto contributetowardsthecost.
Admittedlymanyofthe NewAustralianswere buildingtheirownhomes, butthesameappliedto AustralianCatholicsresidentinthedistrict.These, notwithstandingthe.fact thatthey,too,werebuildingtheirownhomes,would certainlygivetheexample whichAustralianCatholics hadalwaysgiven.Hehoped theNewAustralianswould emulatetheirexamplein thisrespect. HisGraceexpressedthe wish,too,thattheNew Australianswouldgiveto Australiathebenefitofthe splendidspiritualtraditions oftheirnativelands. Itwasnotlongbefore richandpoor,goodandbad wereinvadingthepeaceful solitudeofthefirstServantsofMary.Forawhile theywelcomedthepoor anddistressedintotheir midst.Butsoontheirtrials wereincreasedbythepresenceofthemostnoxiousof allparasites-thecuriosity seekerinsearchofwhateverinnewanddifferent.

Abovealltheyhadwantedtoavoidthepubliceye. Nowtheywereinitonce again.Theyagreedtoseek outanothershelter.This timetheychoseaspotabout eightmilesfromFlorence anddifficultofaccess.The placewasknownasMt. Senarioandconsidereda wilderness.
WhentheSevenHoly FounderssettledonMt. SenariolittledidtheysuspectthatitwouldbeconsideredthecradleandmotherhouseoftheServiteOrder sevenhundredyearslater. Theyweretoobusybuildingarudehermitageanda smallchapel,hewingcaves outoftherockforsleeping quarters.Forsevenyears theypassedtheirlifehere inpeacefulsolitudeand prayer,contenttoliveand dieassimplehermits.
SecondApparition
Certainlythislifeoftotaldedicationwasvery pleasingtoOurLady.But thetimehadcomewhen shewishedthemtocome outofretirementandto foundanOrderinher honour.WhiletheSeven HolyFoundersweregathererinprayerandmeditation ofMary'sSorrowsonGood Friday,1240,sheappeared tothemasecondtime.
Thistimeshemadeknown herwishesmoreexplicitly. TheymustfoundanOrder anddedicateittothememoryofhersorrows.They mustbeknownhenceforth as"ServantsofMary".They weretowearadistinctive blackgarbasasymbolof mourninghersorrows.And theyweretofollowtherule ofSt.Augustine.Thusthe ServileOrderwaslaunchedattherequestofMary herself.Inthis,itsfounding,itisuniqueamongall otherOrdersintheChurch.
TheServileOrderwas definitelyapprovedin1304 byPopeBenedictXI.The 'restishistory.

theirfollowers,hasleftits white-hotstamponevery pageofChurchhistory since.Marywasthebond ofunityamongtheSeven Foundersandthisunity manifesteditselfinfraternalcharitywhichwasso contagiousthatithelpedin nosmallmeasuretobring aboutpeaceinmorethan onequarrelsomeItalian city.

EachyearsincetheinstitutionofSocialJustice Sunday,astatementonsomemajoraspectofthe socialquestionhasbeenissued,eitherdirectlybythe CatholicHierarchyofAustraliaorwiththeirauthority.Thesepronouncementshave,inmanyinstances, beenforthrightandconcreteandwellin'advanceor politicalimplementation.Noristhereanydoubtthat theyhavemadeavaluablecontributiontonational lifeintheformulationofpublicopinion.Perhapstheir impacthasbeenmostworthwhile,intheeyesofnonCatholicsanyhow,indemonstratinghowtheprinciplesoftheChristianFaithcanbeappliedtopoliticalandeconomictrendsandhowreligiondoesnot proposetoconfineitselftothesanctuaryandthe presbytery.
Thisyear,theBishopsaddressthemselvestothe vitalproblemofmigration-vitaltothespiritualand culturaldevelopmentofourland,toitseconomic growthandtoitsdefence.Theyreviewthepastfive yearsduringwhichlarge-scalemigrationhasoperatedP withagainof700,000peopletoourpopulation.Inthe beginning,duetofavourableeconomiccircumstance, themassentryofforeignerswasaccepted,butwith thebusinessrecessionin1952,fearswerewhippedup bypressuregroupswhichaimedtohavethemigrant programmehalted.Theensuingconfusion,whichstill obfuscatesthemajorityofourpeople,needsdissipating,andtheBishopsproposetogiveauthoritative guidanceonthemoralissuesinvolvedandclarificationinthesocialandeconomicissues.

Quitealotofvulgarityis apparentinadvertisements ofwomen'spersonalclothingsuchascorsets,etc.also insomeadvertisementsof films,wherehalf-naked womenareportrayed.
IsItJustified?
Advertisementswhichfeaturewomeninsuggestive posesandequallysuggestiveclothing,especiallyin connectionwithaproduct suchasconfectioneryor radios,couldbeclassedas morallyobjectionable.
Similarly,blatantadvertisementsofbooksonsex andmarriage,certaincalendars,advertisementsofcostlyhomesandadvertisementssuggestingthatitis moreprofitabletohave smallerfamiliescouldbe placedinthesameclass.
Opinionsvariedonwhethermoneyspentonadvertisingwasjustifiable.
