OfMissHammond

Theprogrammechosen forJoanHammond'sfinal recitallastWednesdaynight wasaconstantcontrast betweenverywellknown worksandothersmuchless familiar.Asanexampletheopeninggroupofsongs began with Handel's "Angelseverbrightand Fair."Thiswasfollowedby anenergetic"Sailor'sSong' ofHaydn,then"TheLast RoseofSummer",and,concludingthegroup,aconcert ariabyMozart"Miseradove sono".Thislast,anelaboratepiece,was,bothinits composition,andthesinger'spresentationofit,a singularlystrikingitem.

OfthenextaFrench group,thesparkling"Sito leveux"ofKoechlinwas particularlyattractive.Highlightofthisgroup,indeed, ofthewholeconcert,was "Pleurezmesyeux"from Massenet'sopera"LeCid". Thiswassungwithintensely movingexpressionandwas warmlyapplaudedbythe audience.Otheroperatic excerptsontheprogramme werefrom"AdrianaLecouvreur"byCilea,and Dvorak's"Rusalka."

AgroupofLiedercontainedSchubert's"Lachen andWeinen",Schuman's "Ichgrollenicht"andthree songsbyJosephMarx.One ofthese,thedainty"Wofuer",wasespeciallydelightful.

VaughanWilliams's"The WaterMill"wasthebest oftheEnglishcollection.

Throughouttheevening thereweresomevery highnotesandsomevery lownotesthatwerenot pleasinginquality;but, generallyspeaking, theconcertwasmusicallyandartisticallyagreatersuccess thanMondaynight'sperformance.
