Therewerethose,His Gracecontinued,whoobjectedtoconventeducation onthegroundsthatitwas notabreastofthetime.The nuns,theyclaimed,hadno opportunityofadvancingin theirstudies,becausethey werenotpermittedauthors otherthanspiritualones forprivatedevotionorthe textbooksusedinclass. Theywererepresentedgenerallyasbeingbehindthe age.

Itwasnotnecessaryfor himtosaythatthatwasa grossexaggeration,and thoseatthefunctionthat afternoon-menandwomen whowereeducatedbythe nuns-couldgivethelieto thatfalseaccusation.For theyhadtraditionsformed intheconventsinwhich theywereeducated,evidenceofculturedandrefinedwomenwhohadmade seriousstudiesandwhocontinuedtostudytomake themselvesfamiliarwith moderncurriculawhichthe

Thesewordswerespoken bytheRev.E.McBridein thecourseofasermondeliveredduringthecelebrationofPontificalHigh MassatSt.Mary'sonNov. 2tomarkthe50thanniversaryofthelayingofthe foundationstoneofthe church.

Thechurchwasfilledwith parishionersfromKalgoorlie,Boulder,Coolgardieand Norseman.Amongthecongregationwerepriestswho wereformerlyofthegoldfieldsandseveralpersons whowerepresentatthe historicceremonyin1902.

FatherMcBride,whoreceivedhisearlyeducation attheChristianBrothers' College,Kalgoorlie,andis atpresentparishpriestof Scarborough,saidthefoundationstoneofthechurch waslaid50yearsagobythe thenBishopofPerth,Bishop Gibney.Theparishpriest wasFatherRobinson,who wasstilllivingbutwas unfortunatelypreventedby

ill-healthfromattending thejubileecelebrations.

FatherRobinsonwasappointedparishpriestof KalgoorlieinApril,1901, andwithinashorttimeof hiscomingachurchcommitteewaselectedtogo aheadwiththebuildingof anewchurch.ThefoundationstonewaslaidonNovember2,1902,andthe completedchurchwasblessedbyBishopGibneyon blovember22,1903.

Thejubileecelebrations SolemnRequiemMasswas saidat9a.m.fordeceased priests,Sisters,Brothersand parishionersorSt.Mary's parish.At8.15p.m.an openairconcertandreceptionwasheldinSt.Mary's Churchgrounds.Thecelebrationsconcludedwiththe holdingofajubileeconcert attheKalgoorlieTown Hall.

OnSunday,Nov.30,thesolemnNovena beginsattheCathedral,inpreparationfor thefeastoftheImmaculateConception. Byaveryhappycoincidence,justafewdays previously,therewillbecelebratedthefeast oftheMiraculousMedal.

ThisleastfallsontheanniversaryofthegreatapparitionofOurLadytoSt. CatherineLaboure,Nov.27, 1830,whenthemiraculous medalwasmanifested,and Heavengavethecommand thatitbestamped,blessed andspread.

TheclientsofOurLady willrejoicethatdaytorecallthegraciousgiftofthg ImmaculateMotherofGod andallthewonderfulcir-* cumstancesthatsurrounded thateventandfollowedit, changingthemedal'soriginalnamebecauseofthe hostoffavoursgrantedto thosewhousedthemedalas OurLadyhaddirected.

OnNov.28iskeptthe feastofSt.CatherineLaboure,whowascanonised onJuly27,1947,bythepresentPope.

OneoftheSistersthought totryhimbyaskingwhat shewasholdinginherhand, butheanswered:"Itisyour crucifix,Sister."Whenhe waslatertakenbeforethe professorandthedoctors, theywerebaffled.Galati hadbeensufferingfrom totalatrophy,andthathis curewasmiraculouscan bestbesummedupbythe professor.Whenquestionedastothepatient'ssight, hereplied:"Adeadorgan cannotberevived,unlessby supernaturalintervention."

Attheinter-clubcompetitionsatLeedervilleovalon Nov.15,theY.C.W.club wasagainvictoriousinfour outofthefivegrades,but duetotheearlydeparture ofanumbercfathleteson holidays,theclubwasina weakenedconditionatthe endoftheday'sevents,and couldonlywintwoofthe relays.

Outstandinginthe"A" gradewasJohnFraser's winningeffortof9ft.inthe polevault,inwhichevent heisuntutored.Healso wontheseconddivisionof the120yardshurdlesbehindJohnChilvers,who showedunexpectedearly formwithatimeof16secs. inwinningthefirstdivision. BillO'Grady'swinning broadjumpof23ft.Ilin.was

Y.C.W. middle-distance runners,F.O'ConnelandT. Hughan,turnedonanother granddisplayintheone mileevent.Terrywonthe seconddivision,andalthoughFrankwasbeaten intosecondplaceinthefirst division,hisdefeatseemed tobeduetothefrequent changesofpacenecessaryto meetthetacticsofanother runnerwhowassubsequentlydisqualified.Theirattentiontotrainingwhileat Pearceisacredittothese twolads.Anotherthrilling strugglewaswitnessedin theonemilemedleyracein thisgrade.Theemergency teamconsistedofhurdlerJ. Chilvers(880yards),J. O'Connell(440yards),W. DeGruchyandG.Ward (220yardseach).Itcould besaidthateachofthefour rantheraceofhislife,but thegrandesteffortcame fromJohnO'Connell,who, althoughnotintraining, producedaterrificdash overhisfinal150yards. Theireffortdeservedabetterfatethentobedowned byafoot.

W.DeGruchywasunexpectedlybeateninthe100 yards,inwhicheventhe seemedtofavouroneleg, butintherelaytherewas notraceofunevennessin hismovement.Thedefeat maybetohisultimategood, asanathletecannotproduceanythingextrawhen helinesupforaracewhich ishisbeforeitstarts,and this,unfortunately,hasbeen thecasewithBillonmany pastoccasions. G.Ward,theothersprinterinthisgrade,exhibits morestaminathaninpreviousyears,andshouldhave asuccessfulseason.

Someoftheathletesin thisgradeareamodelof thetypeofself-sacrificing athletesonecessarytokeep aclubontop,butitmustbe seenthatallcarryanequal shareoftheburden. SecretaryG.Lambeshize,yedgoodformwithathirdin the"B"gradeinamilerun intimefastenoughfor"A" grade. Inthelowergrades,so manyadjustmentswere necessarythatseveralfound themselvesinunfamiliar events.NotableinthisrespectwereR.Hall,G.Griffen,M.O'Hara,andH.Bulbeck,whowereshotintoone mileraces.Eachsawthe distanceout,andR.Hall seemedtofinditanagreeableevent.
