FatherLangmeadwelcomedtheArchbishop.He saidtheschoolhadbeen opened32yearsagoby MonsignorMoloneyinthe oldchurch,withanenrolmentof12pupils.The progressofthedistricthad necessitatedthebuildingof anewschool,whichwas openedin1934.Extensions to towardsthisbuildingweremade theendof1948.

SpaceCrowdedOut

Beforetheendof1949, however,thegrowthofpopulationfoundtheschool againovercrowded.One classroomhoused56pupils 'andthesacristywasemployedasaschoolroom.

Abeginningwasmade lastyearwiththenew schoolasthefirstpartofa long-rangeplanofdevelopment.

FatherLangmeadpraised thegenerosityofthechildrenwhohadraised£100, thebusybeeofmenwhose freelabourhadsaved £300-400andthewonderful co-operationofthenuns andladiesoftheparish.

Thearchitectsofthe schoolwereWm.Bennett andAssociates,andthecontractors,HarnettandHorner.

ArchbishopTells OfFreeLabour

HisGracecongratulated FatherLangmeadandallassociatedwithhimonthe veryfineschooltheyhad erected.FatherLangmead hadsetaveryhighstandard ofprimaryschoolbuilding. Thecorridoreffectinthe schoolrooms.thecloakrooms andthesanitaryarrangementswerenewdepartures asfarasprimaryschools wereconcernedandwould measureuptothehighest standardsofeducational requirements.

WhateverFatherLangmeaddid,continuedHis Grace,hedidwellandin adignifiedmariner.The Archbishop congratulated himandhispeople.There wasexcellentorganisationinOsborneParkandafine

spiritofgenerosityandselfsacrifice.HisGraceinstancedthefactthattheold schoolbuildingwaspainted recentlybyabodyofvolunteerworkers;ajobthat ordinarilywouldcostinthe regionof£400hadcost onlythepriceofthe paint:

Thelittlechildren,too, hadcontributedanaverage of6/8perchildtowardsthe costoftheerectionofthe newbuilding.Wherethat splendidspiritprevailed theyneedhavenoappre- hension incurred.regardingthedebt

HisGracecongratulated theSistersofMercyonthe wonderfultrainingthey weregivingthechildrenand onthehighstandardoftheir educationalwork.

Thebuilding,continued theArchbishop,hadcost about£11,600.Itwashigh, butnottoohighconsidering thecostsprevailingto-day forthreeveryfineclassroomsandthesplendidamenitieswhichitafforded.

HisGracesaidtherewere hopefulsignsthatsomethingmightbedoneinthe nearfuturetoremedythe injusticeunderwhichCatholicswerelabouringforso long.Hewasdelightedto readintheeveningpaperof the5thinst.areportfrom Hobart,thattheTasmanian HouseofAssemblyhad,on thepreviousday,passeda Billtogivefinancialaidto non-Stateschools. Thatwasrefreshingandconsolingnews.

Lastyear thePremierofTasmania andhisgovernmenthadap- pointedaJointCommitteeof bothHousestoreporton theadvisabilityorotherwise

ofGovernmentassistance forchildrennotattending Stateschools.

InitsreportthisCommitteestatedthattheevidenceinsupportofnonStateschoolswasconvincing andbasedpnneedsthat hadbecomeurgent.Itwas supportedbyfrankstatementsof relativefactsandfigures tothematterunder inquiry.

Tasmania,HisGracesaid, hadbeenadvocatingthis

formanyyearsjustlike everyotherStateinthe Commonwealth,andheexpressedthehopethatthe otherStateswouldfollow theverytimelyleadgiven byTasmania.

TheArchbishopsaidhe hadalsobeendelightedto seeinthelatestFederal budgetthatprovisionhad beenmadeforarebateof upto£50foreachchildon thetaxableincomeofparentswhopayschoolfees. Thiswasatleast,abeginningtoasolutionofthe 80-years-oldproblemaria wasanacknowledgement ofaprinciple.Itwouldbe approved,notonlybyCatholics,butbyallwhowere awareofthetruefacts.

AbbotCatalan,inresponding,wasdeeplytouchedandexpressedhisgrati- tudeforthetokenofappre- ciation.Hereferredtothe worksundertakenduring hislongreign.Heconsidered thatoneofthemostimportantofhisworkswasthe establishmentoftheCongregationoftheRegularBenedictineOblateSisterswho hadplayedsuchagreat roleatNewNorcia,especiallyinworkfornative girls,intheDrysdaleRiver MissionandatBindoon. AbbotCatalan,wasborn atCorella,Spain,onNov.16, 1878.HeenteredtheMontserratmonasteryatthe ageof14andmadehis simpleperpetualprofession March24,1895 Takingsolemnvowsin 1900,hewasordainedpriest byCardinalCasanes,BishopofBarcelonaatMontserrat twoyearslater. TheLegionofMary,said theDean,hadappliedfor permissiontoorganise groupsofNewAustralians

whowouldtakepartinthe processioninnationalcostume,undertheirownbanners.Thepermissionhad beengranted,andtheorganisationwouldbeinthe handsofaspecialpraesidiumwhichworksamong migrants.

Theoccasionalsermonat Aquinascollegeon the Feastof\ChristtheKing, Oct.28,willbegivenbythe notedFranciscan,theRev. P.Murphy,O.F.M.,whois conductingtheRetreatsfor theclergy.

Theoccasionisalsothe annualrallyoftheHoly Namesociety.Itisexpectedthatrepresentatives ofallbrancheswillmarch inanimpressivecontingent.

Whenpeopledonotsend theirofferingsforthemissionaries,wecansayat leasttheytreatthemwith unremittingkindness.

Aftertheprematuredeath ofBishopTorres,Oct.5, 1914,hetravelledtoNew Norciawherehepresidedat theelectionofthenew Abbotofthemonastery.He himselfwaselectedMarch 27,1915.Theappointment wasconfirmedJune30of thesameyear.HethentravelledtoSpainwherehe madethecanonicalvisitationofall nasteries,theSpanishmoincludingMontserrat.

Duringhislongperiodof 36yearsasAbbotNullius AbbotCatalanwasrespon- siblefortheinstallationof electricitythroughoutthe NewNorciaMission.He builtthecommodioushostel andclassroomsatSt.Ildephonsus'college.Heimpor- tedthefinepipeorganfor thepro-Cathedralandadded considerablytotheartistic treasuresofthe'monastery.

Newbook-bindingequip-mentandprintingmachine wereaddedtothemonastic craftsandnewplantforthe efficientproductionofthe abbey'sland.

ForLocalVocations

In1940AbbotCatalan openedaJuniorateforthe fosteringofAustralianvocationstotheBenedictine OrderSincethattimevocationshavebeencomingin steadily.Therearenowfive AustraliansBenedictinepriestsandanumber ofstudentsforthepriest- hood.

In1935AbbotCatalan hadthecommunityofTeresianSisters,whohadbeen broughtoutbyBishop Torres,erectedintoaregularCongregationunderthenameofRegularBene-dictineOblateSistersof SaintBenedict.Onfouroccasionshebroughtoutfresh recruitsfromSpain.

LastyearAbbotCatalanafterhislongandarduous reignofmorethanathird ofacenturydecidedtoshift theburdenofresponsibility toyoungershoulders.AccordinglyI--tendedhisresignationwhichwasaccepted. Intheinterim,beforethe electionofthenewAbbot, heretainedfullpowersand dignity.Ontheappointment ofthenowreigningAbbot, AbbotGregoryGomez, O.S.B.,thefourthAbbotof theAbbey,thetitleofAbbot TitularNulliusofSaint AemillianofCuculla,Spain, wasconferreduponhim.

Henowlivesaretired life.Hishealthhasbeen failingforsometime.Recentlyhewasinhospitalfor somefiveweeksandmay havetoreturnforfurther treatment.

Cloudsofnationalresentments,distrust,andsuspicionveilthescenewheretheworktowardunityis takingplace.TheHolyFatherhasremindedCatholicsthattheirsisapartcularcmfwyetaonshrdluuu tholicsthattheirsisaparticularopportunityand dutytohelpdispelsuchcloudsandcreatethe"atmosphere"ofmutualunderstanding,respect,sincerityandbenevolencewhichformstherealbasisof unity.Aunitywhichdisregardsthisbasis,aspurious"unity"whichisonlymanufacturedtosuittemporaryconveniencesandachievematerialadvantages,isdoomedtofailure.Itcouldneverwardoff thedangersofculturalandsocialdisintegration whichChristopherDawsonanalysedinhislatest book,"UnderstandingEurope."Perhaps,those vaguelyfeelingthat"somethingismissing"inthe Europeanmovementtowardunitywillcometorealise,asDawsonsaid,thatthesourcesofEurope's innerstrengthandunityare"thosefundamental spiritualprincipleswhichareinseparablefromthe Christianfaithandwhichhavebeenthefoundation ofthewholedevelopmentofWesternculture."

At2.30a.m.onThursday, May3,1894,thepresbytery nearthesiteofthepresent Stateschoolwasblownup withdynamite.FatherGibneymiraculouslyescaped seriousinjury.Hewasthe onlyoccupantofthepresbytery.Theperpetratorof thedastardlyact,aman namedJohnMcCabe,was senttoFremantlegaolfor 15years. AfterMassonthefollowingSunday,apublicmeeting,whichwasconvenedin St.Patrick'sschoolbythe Rev.FatherTreacyandMr. J.F.Reilly,ofNortham, carriedseveralresolutions. Onemotionexpressed"utter

WestAustralian trumpeter,IvanNylander, capablyperformedhispart, whilethepianist,whowas IgorHmelnitsky,played withamasterfultoneand brillianttechniqueideally suitedtothiscomposition. Inofferingthegift,Dr. Kiernansaid:

-Therehasbeen,Igather, acertainamountofhazinessastowhattheBookof Kellsis.Itwasknown,in ancienttimesinIreland,as theBookofColmcille.He diedin595.HehadfoundedinIrelandthemonasteriesofDerry,Raphoe,Durrow,andKells.Hewasa brilliantreligiousteacher, poetandscribe,andhimselfcopiedinilluminated andplainmanuscriptsome tBreehundredexamplesof theScriptures.

Once,whenaguestinan Irishmonastery,hecopieda vellumofthePsalms,and tookawaythecopywith him.TheAbbot,St.Finnian,didnotprotesttohis guest;thatwouldhavehurt thelawsofhospitality;but whenhehadleft,senthim amessagerequestingthe Ropy.Thatistheearliest recordedcopyrightdispute. Finian'sargumentwasthat, astheoriginalbelongedto hismonastery,copiesmade fromit,especiallyonemade withouthisexpresspermission,belongedtotheoriginal.

"Fact"supplementofthe "SundaySun"beganadramaticreportfromLondon bysaying:"Thirty-seven yearsoldWaltonHannah, 6ft.2in.parson-farmerof Sussex,thisweekhitthe LondonheadlinesbyaccusingFreemasonsofbeing heretics."

Thereasonforalltheexcitement?TheKing,the ArchbishopofCanterbury andalmosthalftheAnglican Bishops,nottospeakofthe lowerclergy,werethemselltsMasons.Needlessto say,therewasnohopeof gettingConvocationtoface uptosuchanissue.Though leadingchurchmenhad comeintheexpectationofa bitterdebate,themotion wasvetoedbythechairman beforediscussioncouldget underwayatall.

leavethingsatthat.Hehas nowpublishedinbookform hisowninvestigationinto Freemasonry;andCatholics atanyratewillbefascinated bytheunusualspectacleof anAnglicanclergymantellinghisfellowAnglicansin nouncertaintermsthatthey havebeenasblindasbats, andthatthePapalcondemnationsoftheCrafthave beenrightallalong.

Thefirstthingtostrike oneinthereadingofhis bookishisdesiretobe scrupulouslyfair.Inhis prefacehedeclaresthat, sinceitisobviouslywrong tobaseanycaseonextracts takenfromtheircontext, "itseemsonlyjustthatthe entirecontextshouldbe published."Forthisreason, inthesecondpartofhis book,hegivesthecomplete ritesofMasonicceremonial andprocedure,togetherwith theofficialexplanatorylectures.Therearenoblanks orasterisks,asinordinary Masonicmanuals.Allsigns, gripsandpasswordsare fullydescribed;allomissions supplied.

Theinitiate,introducedas "apoorcandidateinastate ofdarkness,"asksfor "Light,"andarrivesat"the mostdramaticmomentof theceremony.Coinciding withathunderoushandclapfromtheassembled brethren,hishoodwinkis removed,andforthefirst timehebeholdstheLodge!"

ButinMr.Hannah'sbook thereader,withnoneedof beinghoodwinkedatall, haseverythingputbefore him.If,withoutbeinga Mason,anyonewantsto knowallthatMasonsthemselvesknowabouttheir Masonicrites,andallthat issodramaticallyrevealed tothemattheirinitiation, hereisthebookforhim.

Thissecondpartofthe book,however,isnotfor thepurposeofsatisfyingthe merelycurious.Itistoenablethereadertocheckup forhimselfthevalueofthe verdictatwhichtheauthor arrivesinthefirst78pages; andtheyarethepages

whichwillproveofthe greatestinteresttoallreaders.

Anoutstandingimpression fromreadingthemisMr. Hannah'sevidentdetachmentfromallpersonalbitterness.LoveofChristianity andnothatredofMasonry hasbeentheauthor'spredominantmotivefrombeginningtoend.

Totheestablishingofhis contentionthatMasonryand Christianityaremutually exclusivereligions,then,he devotesthefirsthalfofhis book.Herethechaptersare prefacedbybriefbutdelightfullyaptquotations mainlydrawnfromLewis Carroll's"AliceinWonderland."Typicaloftheir humouristhatintroducingthechapteron"EcclesiasticalCondemnationsof Freemasonry.""'Letthe juryconsidertheirverdict', theKingsaid,foraboutthe twentiethtime."Butifthey openwithasmile,thechaptersare"verymuchinearnest."

Inthemhetellsusthat, whenitwassuggestedto himthatheshouldjointhe MasonicLodge,hewroteto aMasonicAnglicanBishop askingforspiritualguidance inthematter.Inthelightof thepaganelementsinthe Masonicritual,woulditbe lawfulinconscienceforhim todoso?Hewasshockedby theBishop'sreplythathis MasonicOathforbadehim eventodiscusssuchthings withonenotyetinitiated intotheCraft.Sowherethey wereinconflict,Masonicobligationshadtotakeprecedenceevenovertheduties ofaChristianBishop!Isit anywonderthatMr.Hannahfeltimpelledtogothoroughlyintothesubjectfor himself?

Oneofthemostvaluable chaptersisthatalready mentioned,theoneon"EcclesiasticalCondemnations." Theauthorlistsasurprising numberofrepudiationsof Freemasonrybyvariousreligiousbodies.

Prideofplace,ofcourse, isgiventothePapalEncyclicalsandduetributeis paidtotheCatholicChurch forhavingdiscernedfrom theverybeginningthetrue natureofFreemasonry,and forhavingcondemnedit overandoveragainatevery newphaseofitsdevelop-mentandactivities.

Ofverygreatinterestto thereaderwillbethefull translationinEnglishfor thefirsttimeofanauthoritativestatementformembersoftheGreekOrthodox Churches,issuedbyallthe GreekPatriarchsassembled atMt.Athos,onOctober 12th,1933. Afteradetailedexposition ofthereasonsforit,thedecisionofthePatriarchs isgiven:"Thereforeall whohavebecomeinvolved intheinitiationofMasonic mysteriesmustfromthis momentseverallrelations withMasonicLodgesand activities."

"NoChurch,"hewrites, "thathasseriouslyinvestigated andthereligiousteachings implicationsofFreemasonryhaseveryetfailed tocondemnit.IstheChurch ofEnglandtoomortallyinvolvedtospeakhermind?"

Thatratheroptimistically supposesthattheChurchof Englandhasadefinite "mind"onthissubjecttowhichshecouldgiveutterance.Andevenifshehad, itwouldbestillmoreopti- mistictoexpectherBishops, withsomanyofthem "taughttobecautious"in theLodge,todoanything aboutit.Norcouldreliance beplacedevenuponthe non-MasonicBishops.For thepenaltyofcomprehensivenessintheChurchof Englandiscompromise.

ThatMasonryisanonChristiancult.Thestock evasion"Masonryisnot'a' religion,it'is'religion,"is demolishedutterly.
