HisExcellencyenteredthe Cathedraltothemajestic strainsofKoss'"EcceSacerdosMagnus"AttheOffertorythemotetwasPraglias "TuesPetrus."Handel's "HallelujahChorus"marked theconclusionoftheceremonies.

Beforebestowingthe ApostolicBlessingonall present,HisExcellencyaddressedthecongregation.He expressedhisdeepgratitude andsatisfactionforthefew dayshehadspentinPerth.

"Iknowonlytoowell," saidtheApostolicDelegate, "thatinthisCathedralIam standingonhallowed ground,.thegroundupon whichtheseedoffaithwas sownintearsbythefirst Bishopsandpriestsof WesternAustralia,sothat theirsuccessorsinfuture yearsmightreapindeedin joyfulness"

Priests,LaityHelp

Thefifthintheglorious seriesoftheseApostles,continuedHisExcellency,was theirbelovedArchbishop, Dr.Prendiville,andithad beenforhim(thespeaker), agenuinepleasuretowitnessthemarvellousdevelopmentoftheirArchdiocese underhislonganduntiring episcopate.Therewasnot afield,beiteducational,cultural,litiggical,chariliable orsocialwhichdidnotbear theimprintofhisgeniusand ofhiszealousactivity.

Nothing,however,would hehavedone,nosuccesswas tobeexpectedwithoutthe faithfulco-operationof scoresofdevotedpriests, brothersandsisters;no seminary,nochurches,no schoolsandcolleges,nohosandorphanages,no CatholicPressshouldthey witnessthatdaywithoutthe unstintedgenerosityofall thepeopleofPerth..

'Accept,then,mymost cordialthanks,"saidHisExcellency"inthenameofthe HolyFatherhimself."

TheVicarofChristhad alwaysbeenpresentin Perthfromtheverybegin- ning,hecontinued,inthe personsofthosevaliantmissionarieswhomHesentfrom theIslandofSaintshereto WesternAustraliatominis-

tertothespiritualneedsof thefirstCatholicsettlersin thisreallybeautifulpartof theContinentoftheSouthern Cross.

Itfelluponhimtohave thegreathonourandresponsibilitytorepresentthePope inAustralia,andthroughhis persontheywereverynear totheHolyFather.They shouldnotthinkofHisHolinessonlyastheSupreme HeadoftheChurchsurrounded,asheis,bythat splendourandglorywhich isrightlyduetohismost exaltedoffice;theyshould notseeonlythehaloofsupremespiritualpoweraround hisvenerablebrow.Inthese saddays,HisExcellency said,theHolyFatherwantedthemtolookonhim ratherasVicaroftheCrucified,oftheOnescourged andcrownedwiththorns.

PontiffSuffering

IfthePontiffhadnotas Yetsufferedbodilyinjury, theymightjustlysaythat hehadfeltandfeelsevery dayinhispaternalheartall thepains,thetortures,the massacresofsomanyofhis Bishops,priestsandfaithful,whointhecountries wellknowntothemgave mostcourageouswitnessto JesusChrist.Theyshould thinkofhimassuccessorto St.Peter,ofPetertherein theprisonsofJerusalem, whilealltheChurchwas prayingwithoutceasingfor hisliberation;andtheyshouldpraylikewisefor,all thechampionsofthefaith whoreplenishedthegaols today.

TheApostolicDelegate saidthattheHolyFather wouldbegratefulfortheir devotion,wellknowntohim, andinthatunionofmind andheartwithhisbeloved childrenofAustraliahe wouldfindgreatcomfort andconsolationinhissolicitudeforallthechurchesof theworld.

ForAllHumanity

TheservicesoftheHoly Fatherwerenotreserved onlyforthemembersofthe CatholicChurchbutwere extendedcontinuouslyand generouslytoallhumanity. TheVicaronearthofHim whomultipliedtheloaves ofbreadforthehungry 'crowd,whomadewholethe sick,whofeltcompassion forandevenweptoverthe miseriesofthepeople,also

imitatedhisMaster,bytryingtoalleviatethesufferingsofthepoor,thelonelinessofprisoners,theneeds ofmigrants.

IsPopeofPeace

"Thisisnotspeaking figuratively,mydear people,"concludedHisExcellency:"itiscurrenthistoryandnotadayofthe pontificateofPiusXIIhas passedwithoutthesterling evidenceofoneoranother oftheseworksofcharity. ButaboveallthePopeisthe PopeofPeace:inseasonand outofseasonheispointing outtothepeoplesofthe worldthewaystolasting Peaceandtosocialrestorationby andmutualco-operation bydiscardingoncefor alltheprinciplesofegotismandmaterialism.

Foundedin1944forthedentsoftheareahowtoworkoftheSistersinthis religiousinstructionofthelookafterit,tocarefortheStatethaninanyotherpart childrenoftheoutbackdis-altarlinen,vestments,sacredofAustralia. trict,theSisterswere canonicallyerectedasaReligiousCongregationon August15,1951,saidFather Wallis.

Throughtheircaravan missionstheyareindirect contactwith1500children while1100youngstersreceiveinstructionbycorrespondence.TheSisterscon./ ductafive-weeks'Mission invariouscountryparishes. DuringthistimetheyinstructCatholicchildrenin Stateschools,makehouse-. to-housevisitation,takethe oensus,instructconvertsand conducteveningDevotions wherethereisnopriest.
