Morethan200menandwomenUniversitygraduatesand undergraduates,gatheredinSi.Mary'sCathedralonApril20, heardanannouncementbyBishopGoody,onbehalfofHisGrace theArchbishop,thatthebuildingofaCatholicresidentialcollege withintheUniversitywouldbeundertakenimmediately.

WhenMoralsDrift

Hedidnotpropose,said Dr.Goody,togointothe supposedconflictbetween scienceandreligion.They wouldnotbetherethat morningiftheirfaithhad notconvincedthemthat realoppositiondidnotexist andthatanyapparentconflictwasdueeithertoignoranceofthecompleteteachingsofChristortothe neglectoftheordinary practicalmeansofobtainingGod'sgrace.

WhenaChristiansoulcollapsedunderthestressof Universitylife,thefallin mostcaseswasamoralone ratherthanintellectual; althoughadriftinmorals wasoftenfollowedbyintellectunbalance,too.

Itstoodtoreasonthen thattheCatholicChurch mustbeinapositionto offerherfullcontribution andallherhelptoUniversitylifeifshewastofulfil hercommissiongivenher byJesusChrist-tosave souls.

FirstDefection

TheCatholicChurchin Australia,hadmadeand wasmakingenormoussacrificestomaintainanation widesystemofprimary schoolsat sacrificetrulystupendous costingliterally hundredsofmillionsof poundsoverthelast50 yearsandmadepossible bytheheroicselflessnessof thousandsofreligious teacherswhoweresecond tononeintheirsuccessand efficiency.

TheChurchaddedto thisamagnificentsystemof secondaryeducation,collegesandtechnicalschools, whichcarriedthelittle childrenontotheageof leavingschool.

Thentheselectedfew, (selectedbyabilityandinc-

linationandhardwork) thosewhoinmanycases wouldbethefutureleaders inournation,wentonto theUniversityandupto date,hereintheWest,those youngmenandwomenso eageryetimmature,intelligentyetstillunlearned, hadoftenlosttouchwith Christ'sChurchforthefirst time.

Theyhadtoalargeex- tentfailedtocompletetheir standardofeducationby takinglittleactivepartin thelifeoftheUniversity.

MomentousNews one-fiftifTheCatholicpeople(only ofthepopulation) hadbeencomparativelyexhaustedbytheircontributiontoprimaryandsecondaryeducation;theadded sacrificeneededtofinance aUniversityestablishment hadunderstandablybeen shiedawayfrom.

ArchbishopBreyantobservedtheanniversaryin hisnativeFrance,wherehe islivinginretirement.

Itwasin1902thathewas consecratedfirstVicar ApostolicofMackenzie, thenforthemostparta vastbarrenareainwhich hisflockwasmadeupmostlyofIndiansandEskimos. Heservedinthisdifficult missionfieldfor51yearsin all,41ofthemasaBishop. In1943heretired.

WhenthethenBishop Breynatwasabletoobtain aplanewiththehelpof friendsinFrance,itproved aGodsendforhimandhis missionaries.Muchofhis missionfieldwasnorthof theArcticCircle,andthe planecarriedtheBishopon visitstoremotepoints formerlyreachedonlyby longdogsledorcanoetrips. Ahighstandardofperformancewassetbythe augmentedsymphonyorchestrainitsopeningconcert ofthe1952serieslast Fridaynight.Iftheorchestraisabletomaintain suchastandardthroughout theseries,thisyear'sconcertsshouldindeedprove entertaining.

Oneiteminwhichthere wasroomforimprovement wasthefirst-the"SymphonieClassique"byProkofiev.Inthis,onenotedsome raggedplayingfromthe stringsincertainpassages.

"HarryJanos"Suite

Theremainderofthe programmewasverywell presented.TheaccompanimentsofJohnBrownlee's ariasleftnothingtobedesiredandtheplayinginthe "HaryJanos"suitebyKodalywasreallyexcellent. Thiswasthesuite'sfirst presentationinWesternAustralia,andIfeelsurethat, hadthecomposerhimself hearditonFridaynight,he wouldhavebeenquitesatisfiedwiththeorchestra's achievementofthemany andvariedeffectsrequired inthework.Thistypeof compositionappearstosuit theconductor-Mr.Pekarek-andtheorchestra,for theyalwaysplaysuch worksextremelywell.

Themainorchestralwork ontheprogrammewas heardaftertheinterval. ThiswasBeethoven's"Pastoral"Symphony,andboth orchestraandconductorare tobecongratulatedfortheir praiseworthyplayingofthis lovelywork.

Thevisitingbaritone, JohnBrownlee,surmounted theobstacleofaheavyhead coldtogiveaverypleasing recitalattheCapitoltheatreonTuesdayevening. Itwasunfortunatethatthe indispositionstruckhim justwhenitdid,asoneof themostpleasingfeatures ofBrownlee'svoiceisits resonance,anditalsoaffectedhisabilitytotaper hislongernotestoanal., tisticfinish.But,despite thishandicap,theaudience seemedquitesatisfiedwith thefareoffered.

Theopeninggroupof songswasalittlehybridin selection,rangingovertwo Brittenarrangements of Purcellsongs,througha verylovely,anddelightfullysung,trilogyofPurcell, andanearlyEnglishsong, "Westron,Wynde,"toPapageno'ssongfrom"The MagicFlute."Thislastwas takenatrifleheavily,but theearlyEnglishworkwas beautifullyrendered,andof unusualcharacter.

SchubertUnpleasing Brownlee'ssecondgroup consistedofliederbySchubertandSchumann.The bestoftheSchubertwas "TheTown.""TheFlowerMessage"waswelldone, buttherangeof"MyRest ingPlace"madethesinging alittlepatchy.Thetwo Schumannsongswere"The LotusFlower"and"Songof theWanderer."Thefirst wastakenatrifletooslowlytobesatisfying,butthe secondwasgivenitsfull rousingvalue.Asanencoreattheendofthisbracketwehad"Thou'rtLikea TenderFlower."Thefinal phrasewasgiventoomuch rallentando,anditssimplicitywasspoiledbya tendencytosentimentality. Afterintervalthesinger resumedwithtwosongsof Duparc,thesecondof which,"Extase,"wasthe artistichighlightofthe evening'ssinging.Koechlin's"Winter,"excellently renderedbythesinger,was notablefortheexquisite handlingoftheaccompanimentbyRaymondLambert (butmoreofhimanon). "Balladofthe"Ladiesof Paris,"byDebussy,wasnot lightenoughintextureto bringouttheGaelicwitof thesong.Theencoreto thissectionwasRachmaninoff's"SpringWaters."
