Theparishpriestofthe district,theVeryRev.F. KearnanD.D.,introduced thespeakers.HisLordshipcongratulatedtheSisterson thecompletionofthebuild.,ingandremarkedthatthe newblockmarkedtheculminationofmanyyearsof work.Praisingthecourage andtheforesightof.the nuns,hesaidthathewished tothankallthosewhohad helpedintherealisationof theplan.
Firstandforemost,thanks wereduetoGodforallowingtheworkoftheSisters toprosperandthentoall thosewhohadhelped "throughthemazesofred tape"thataccompanyanybuildingplanstoday.TributeswerepaidtotheMinister.forHousing(Mr.G. Wild)forexpeditingthe erectionofthebuildingand toMr.StanCostello"who hadputinsomuchtime, workandartistictalentinto thecompletionofthebuilding."
"Inthepastthreeorfour monthssinceIhavebeena Bishop,"Dr.Goodycontinued,"Ihaveopenedseveralconventsandschools andIhopetoopenmorein thenearfuture."Thatwas allthemoreremarkable,he stressed,onacountofthe many"headaches"inbuildingtoday.Thematerialside ofbuildingwassodifficult thatit workmadethecompleted allthemoremeritorious.Immensesumswere neededtofurtherthe Church'sbuildingprogrammeandthatwasplacing agreatfinancialstrainon theCatholicpeopleofthe State.
Referringtothisadded financialburden.His Lorshipremarkedthatthere were"hopefulsignsthat realassistancemightbe forthcomingsoon.Various Ministershaveshowntheir interestinourproblemsandthejusticeofourcause. RemarkingthatAustralia wasnowfacingagrave crisis,hedisclosedthatthe Governmenthadalreadybroughtmorethan28.000 migrantstothiscountry givingapercapitaincrease ofpopulationgreaterthanthatofJapan.Allofthose migrantsneededhomesand othermaterialsandthe HousingCommissionhad donethebestitcould.The Commissionhadtriedto adoptabroadviewonthese matters,hecontinued,"but IcanassureyouthatIwill doeverythingpossiblefor theeducationofthechildren ofthisState."

SacredHeartchurch,Highgate,wasthe sceneofamostimpressiveceremonyon March23.Itwastherallyorganisedby theY.C.W.executive,whichcommenced withStationsoftheCross,followedbyapresentationofbadgesto40membersbythe MostRev.Dr.L.J.Goody.DuringtheceremonyY.C.W.bannersflankedeithersideof thechurch.
BishopGoodyaddressed thenewmemberswhohad justreceivedbadges,and explainedthattheywere nowmembersofthelay apostolate,andthatthe workershadanimportant jobtodo-tobringChristto allworkers.
DirectlyafterBenedictionmembers,pastmembers,andfriends,totalling about220,assembledinthe Parishhall.DiocesanPresident,RayGleeson,welcomedallmembersand friendswhoattended,and introducedRogerRyan,a pastY.C.W.secretary,who spokeon"YourDutiesasa Y.C.W."Instirringall membersontogreaterefforts,Rogerbroughthome veryeffectivelythefollowingpoints:-

Morethan300'peopleattendedtheStPatrick's nightdance,heldinthe PerthTownallunderthe auspicesoftheIrishclub. Afeatureofthedancewas theenthusiasmwithwhich theIrishfolkdancingwasreceivedbyyoungandold, IrishandAustraliansalike.
Thegeneralopinionwas thatthistypeofdancing wouldproveverypopular ifdevelopedinPerth.Club membersandfriendscame fromasfarawayasAlbany, BruceRock,Perenjori,Katanning,andKellerberrin tocelebratetheirNational feastdayinPerth.

Deservingofspecialcommendationarethewoodwinds,especiallytheflute, fortheirbeautifulplaying inDebussy's''L'Apres-Midi d'unFaune."Theentire orchestraundoubtedlygave ofitsbestinthislovely work,andhereallwasexquisitepoetry.
Themajorworkinthe programmewasthemagni-ficentSymphonyNo.2inD MinorofDvorak.Hadthis beenplayedearlierinthe eveningthereisnodoubt thattheorchestrawould haveperformedsuperbly. Asitwas,itwasplacedlast ontheprogramme,andthestrainofanight'sstrenuousplayinghadtakenitstollof theplayers.Inaccuracyof pitchfromtheviolinswas noticeableinthelastftw barsoftheCoda.Nevertheless,therewasmuchexcellentplaying,andhadthe
beenfresh,no workwouldhave beenfaultless.
TheconcertopenedwithMozart's"Impressario" Overture,inwhichthere wereonlytwoslightimper- fectionstomaranotherwiseexcellentperformance.Oftheseimperfections,one wasthetendencyofthe lowerstringstolagafractionbehindtherestofthe orchestra.Theotheroccurredintheritardpassages,wheretheviolinsdid notplayasoneinstrument.
TheremainderoftheprogrammecomprisedBeethoven'sTwelveContra, delightfullyexecuted;Braham's"Variationsona ThemeofHaydn,''andthe Preludeto"TheMastersingers."
Mr.Pekarekcertainlyled theorchestratogreat heights.Thevariedmoods oftheBrahm'svariations wereablyportrayed.The simplicity,theplayfulness, thegrace,andfinallythe power-allwerethere.The playingoftheimpressive Mastersingersoverturewas admirable,too.
