thesacrificeswhichthe Catholicpopulationmadein payingouthundredsof thousandsofpoundsyearly inthecauseofeducation.
"Why",heasked,"isthe Catholicpopulationsoready tomakesuchcollossalsacrificestoestablishparochialschools?"Theanswer liesinthefactthatCatholicsconsiderthatbeliefin AlmightyGodandrespect forHisLawisofthegreatestimportance.Andinno otherwaybuttheCatholic schoolsystem,canthat Christianbeliefbeinculcatedintheformativeyears.
Thatwasthereason,but itdidnotrelieveitofbeing asacrifice.Catholicsbeliev-
Schoolsystem,wastofulfil thewillofGod,increating children,totrainthemto knowHim,toloveHim, andtoserveHim;thatin doingso,theSisterswere instrumentsinhelpingthe parentstocarryoutthis purpose.Thiswasnotdone unlessbysacrifice.
Theleadinsacrificewas givenbytheteachingpersonnel,fortheyhadnot givenoftheirpossessions, buthadgiventhemselves.
Itwasforthepeopleto shareinthatsacrificeaccordingtotheirmeansand capacity.
ThechairmanoftheRoad Board,Mr.W.W.Fellows, inthecourseofhisaddress,
congratulatedtheCatholic fraternityontheadditionof suchafinebuildingtothe town.Hefurtherthanked theSistersfortheworkthey haddoneinthedistrict,not onlyfortheCatholicchildren,butfortheopportunitiestheyhadofferedfor generalculturalandmusical education.Hewassurethe Sisterswouldfeelveryhappyintheirnewhome, whichwouldbeamemorial oftheworkdonebythem andtheirsuccessors.
Mr.Duckett,vice-chairmanoftheBoard,andthe contractor congratulated andthankedhisforeman, Mr.Jorgensenandthe workmenunderhimfora veryfinejob.

Dr.Goody,inthecourse ofaneloquentandforceful address,congratulatedall concernedintheerectionof thenewconvent,which,he saidwasoneofthefinest countryconventshehad visited.
Heexpressedhispleasure alsoatthepresenceofthe chairmanofthelocalRoad Board,whichhesaidwasa tangibleproofofappreciationofthework,cultural andeducational,doneby theSisters.Heregrettedthe unavoidableabsenceofthe localMemberofParliament, theMinisterforEducation, andDeputyPremier,Mr. Watts,whosepresence wouldhavegiventhatextra touchofencouragement,andwouldhaveshownthat theGovernmentappreciated
edthat,themaintenanceof thesystem,wasadefence againsttyranny,hatredand selfishnesswhichwereconsequentonapopulationlosingfaithinAlmightyGod. Iftheywishedtoavoid thoseterribleconsequences, theonlywayitcouldbe donewastomaintain Christiantraininginour schools,withoutwhich childrenwouldgrowup despisingeventheconventionswhichhadgrownout ofthisfaithinAlmighty God.

NewAustralian,who arrivedinthiscountryfrom Czechoslovakialatein1950, Mr.Lancibudekmadehis debutinW.A.atFremantletwoweeksago.HisperformanceonTuesdaynight wasthatofafirst-classartist,amasteroftheoboethatlovelyinstrument which,untilrecently,has beensosadlyneglectedas asoloinstrument.
Notonlycompletetechnicalmastery,butalsoexcellentphrasingandartistic interpretationweremaintainedthroughoutboththe AdagioexcerptfromBach's "EasternOratorio"andthe Handel"OboeConcerto."It wasunfortunatethatinthe formerthedelicacyofthe solowasattimesoverwhelmedbyanaccompanimentnotalwaysasgentle asit,mighthavebeen.
Inthefirsthalfofthe programmeweheard,besidestheoboeitems,the Handel-Harty "Water" Music,"playedparticularly wellbytheorchestra,and Mozart'sjoyous"Haffner" symphony.Inthislastthe allegroandprestowereenlivenedbyenthusiastic playingthatwasmost praiseworthy,butoccasionallyintheAndanteandin theMinuetto,thevarious sectionsoftheorchestra werenotquitetogether.
Afterinterval,theprogrammeconsistedofworks bymoderncomposers,includingtwobyAustralian AlfredHill.Thefirstof thesewasaneffectiveorchestralarrangementofMr. Hill'swellknownsong, "WarataPoi,"towhichthe orchestradidfulljustice. Thesecondwas"Green Water,"animaginative piecereflectingthemoods ofthepoembyJohn Wheeler,whichwasspoken simultaneouslywiththe music.
Ofthisworkmuchcould bewritten,butsufficeitto saythatformetheeffortof concentrationrequiredto giveboththewordsandthe harmoniesmyundividedattentionprovedtobetoo great. However,Idid noticemuchthatwastrite andcommonplaceinthe music.Thepoemwasread byHenryCuthbertson.
Therewasmoredescriptivemusicin"Nightonthe BareMountain,"byMoussorgsky;notthepleasant picturesof"GreenWater," buteerieimagesofdark spiritswhoserevelryisinterruptedfinallybythe soundofadistantchurch
bellportendingthecoming ofdgwn.Inthis,theorchestraexcelleditself.
Asafinalewehadanadmirableperformanceof Ravel's"Bolero,"marred onlybythefactthatatthe commencementnotallthe exponentsofthewindinstrumentsreachedthehigh standardsetbytheflautist intheopeningbars.

Thespontaneousresponse andwillingnesstoassistin farewellingFatherDuffy, parishpriestofManjimup forthelath114years,could beinterpretedtwoways; whetherhisparishioners weregladtoseehimleave forIrelandorwhetherit wasimotivated'bytheir deepestsincerityofregret. Hefeltitwasthelatter.
DuringhisstayinManjimuphehadseentheobligationsoftheChurchdischarged,andhewashappy tostatethathehadcarried theparishalongwaytowardachievingoneofhis mainobjects,thebuilding ofachurchinManjimup. Therewasamplevisual signsofprogressintheparishaswell,suchasadditionstobuildings,newfences,andmuchpainting,a lotofwhichhehadhimself done,andthebalanceby coercionandthreatsfrom analreadyheavilyburdenedcommittee,withwhich hehadalwayssoamicably worked.
Mr.Gabbedysaidthat this,FatherDuffy'spublic farewell,climaxedaround whichbeganmanyweeks ago,andheconsideredanyonesofetedmusthavereasontofeelhonouredasa popularparishpriest,a guide,counsellor and friendtoall.

ChairmanoftheManjimupRoadboard(Mr.12 Thompson)said,onbehalf ofthecitizensofthedistrict,thatwhentheRev. Dr.KearnanleftManjimup thetownlostoneofitsfin1Stcitizens,andhedoubted Ranyonecouldbeaspopular.Hewasreiterating easeremarksto-day,and IkehopedthatFatherDuffy's siaccessorwouldbeofsimilarcalibre.Hewished, asbehalfofthepeopleof Manjimup,"bonvoyage"to Ireland,andasafeand happyreturntoManjimup Vayear'stime.

Ingratefullyacceptingthe wallet,FatherDuffyrecollectedhisarrivalinManjimupalmost12yearsago wasoverawetandslippery gravelroad,whichaugured foramiserablestay.All thishadbeenconfounded, andhehadfoundnothing buthappiness,contentment, andenjoyment,amongnot onlyhisownparishioners butamongthemembersof otherdenominationsas well.
HewouldalWaysretain happymemoriesof his yearsinManjimup,Which accountedforagoodlyportionofhislife.HethankedMr.Gabbedyandhis committeefortheformof thefarewellhadtaken,and hopedthattheunityamong thevariouscommittees whichMr.Gabbedyheaded, wouldretainitsstrength andmanyaccomplishments. Hedeeplyappreciatedthe remarksofMr.Thompson. Intimehehopedtocome backandcompletetheerec-
tionofachurchwhich wouldnotonlybewelcomedbyparishionersbutworthyofthegenerosityand growingtownofManjimup.

Themeremakingofmoneymight,atanothertime, beasufficientincentivetowork.Butwheregoods ofanessentialnaturearescarce,asinAustraliaand Britain,itisamotivewhichwillnotmotivate.Work isgoodinitself,apartfromitsrewardsinmoney orgoods,therealwealth.Becauseworkisgood andnecessarytoman'struedevelopment,itclothes theworkerinadignityforwhichnomoneycan substitute.Thatisthecrimeofindustrialcapitalism,thatthroughitsdoctrineofmaterialismandits' soul-destroyingmethodsithasstrippedthework ofitsworthandtheworkerofhisdignity.Nor caniteverretraceitsstepsoverthesameterrain.
ThisisveryplainlytobeseenintheAustraliansceneto-day.TheGovernmentneedswheat exportstorebuildoverseascredits,thepeopleneed -wheatinordertocontinueeatingbread.Butthe farmers,atleastintheirofficialorganisations,proposetoreducecroppingbyperhaps25percent. Why?Itisnotthatwheat-growingisunprofitable.Firstthereistheelementofenvy,thatproportionatelytotheeffortinvolvedtherearebetter returnsfromwool.Secondly,thereistheelement ofgreed,thatproportionatetaxationshouldnot applytohandsomewheatcheques.Buttheoverridingconsiderationisthatthefarmingcommunitiesareseeminglypreparedtoplacetheirsectional interestabovewhatis-plainlythecommongood. Suchanattitudeisimmoralandindefensible.

Tobeginwithwemaintainasalmostselfevident thatthesupremeauthority intheStatehasthepower ofenactinglawswhichbind theconscienceofthecitizens.Thatpowercomes,of course,fromGod.Thelawgivermaybeunconsciousof thesourceofhisauthority butthatdoesnotaffectthe factthatwhenheenacts lawswhicharenecessary forthepreservationofcivil societythoselawsimpose, incertaincases,amoral' obligation.
Consequently,ifasubject disobeyssuchalawandunderstandswhatheisdoing, hehasnotonlyrendered himselfliabletoapenalty
butisalsoguiltyofsinin transgressingacommand givenbylegitimateauthority.Theremayalsobe otherkindsofmoralguilt involved.Forinstanceif thelawisoneofthose whichregulatescontracts theremaybeasinagainst justiceaswell. Henceallmenaresaidto havelostsomethingthat wasreallytheirs.Itwasn't theirs,ofcourse,byreason oftheirnatureinwhich thereisthatprincipleof corruptionwhichsooneror laterbringsaboutdeath, butbecauseGodhadadded aspecialgiftbywhichthe fellworkoftheprincipleof corruptionwastobeoffset. Ithas,asyoumightexpect,alwaysbeenasource ofspeculationjustwhat formthisdivineintervene tionwouldhavetaken.Itis notsufficientthatmenbe whippedofftoHeavenby Godbeforedeathordissolutionovertakesthem.Immortalitydemandstheexclusionofthosethingsthat normallybringondeath. Externalcausesofviolent deathwouldhavebeenremovedbyaspecialprovidenceofGod.

Alotofthisisharmless speculation.Thewhofe truthisnotknowntous. Allthatwedoknowhas beenoutlined,viz.bodily immortalitywasgivento manbyGod.Adamsinned andthatgiftwaslost.Had henotsinnedmenforall timewouldhavebeenimmortal.
"Wouldsanctifyinggrace havepreventedmanfrom fallingintosininspiteof freewill?
No.Adamwasinpossessionofsanctifyinggrace, andasweknow,hesinned. Wehavespokenofthe stateinwhichAdamwas beforethefallasastateof OriginalJustice.Original Justiceisthecomplexusof allthosesupernaturaland preternaturalgiftsgranted toAdamasgiftsofnature; amongstthemtheprincipal giftwasthatofsanctifying grace.Itisplacedfirst,not byreasonofitsdignitybut becauseitistherootand causeofalltheothers.

Normallymendodiebefore theyareadmittedtothe visionofGod.Butwhatis normalisnotnecessarily absolutelyessential.Itis notatallcertainthatthose whowillbeaboutonthe LastDaywillalldie.In factitismorethatprobable thatmanyofthemwillnot. Nowtheywillsurelynotbe deprivedofthevisionof Godsimplyonthataccount.
Justhowtheywillmake thepassagefromthislife intothenextwedonot know.Likewisewedo nothow,inGod'soriginalplan,immortalman wouldhavemadethesame passage.Allweknowis
thattherewouldhavebeen sometransitfromthislife tothenextwithoutthecorruptionanddissolutionof death.
Idon'tthinkmuchpurposeisservedbyfurther speculationonthematter. Whatisofrealinterest, though,isjusthowman withhispresentpowers willfinditatallpossibleto seetheBeatificVision.And theanswertothatoneis thatifheisleftasheisthe BeatificVisionwillbealtogetherbeyondhim.The face-to-facevisionofGodis quitebeyondthepowersof humannature.
ToknowGoddirectly humannaturewillhaveto beendowedwithsomething morewhichisnotitsbynatureandwhichisnotsofar asweknowgivenitbefore death.Thisaddedpoweris knownastheLumenGloriae.Onceamanisinthe possessionofthatgiftof Godthenitiswithinhis powertoknowGoddirectly,orasyouputit,to enjoytheBeatificVision.
AsIsaidjustnow,this giftisnormallygivenafter
guardrights,enforceduties andcoerceoffendersagainst thecommongood.
Manyoftheenactments ofthecivillawaresimply furtherdeterminationsof theprovisionsofthenaturallaw.Forexamplewe areboundbythenatural lawtogivetoeveryone whatbelongstohim.In manycasesitremainsfor thecivillawtodetermine whatinfactdoesbelongto theindividualandtomake wiseprovisionswhichwill decidetheconditionsunder whichownershipistransferredoracquired.These provisions,orsomeofthem atanyrate,arenecessary tosecurethepeacefulpossessionofone'sproperty. Otherlawssimplyreiterate theprovisionsofthenaturallaw.Evidentlythese lawsbindinconscience.
Thereisanaspectof manylawswhichissometimesoverlooked.Itisthis: lawswhichconsideredin themselveswouldappear nottobebindinginconsciencecanacquiresucha bindingforceinvirtueof death,butasIhavealso said,deathisnotitsnecessaryprerequisite.Inthe stateofjustice,inwhich youareinterested,itwould havecometomanatsome timethroughlifeandhe wouldhavebeensetforthe enjoymentoftheVisionof God.

In1890,BishopGibney, mindfuloftheincreasein thenumberoftheCatholic populationintheparishes ofMidland-Guildford,approachedtheSuperiorsthen inofficeatVictoriaSquare conventandlaidhisplans beforethemtomakethe branchschoolsintheseparishesindependentofthe MotherHouse.
