ShockingTreatment
Washington.-Sen.HerbertR.O'Conor,ofMaryland,hasreceivedconfirmationfromWalterP.McConaughty,AmericanConsul GeneralinHongKong,of theshockingtreatmentreceivedbythreeFranciscan nunsrecentlyoustedfrom Chinaaftera"trial."The nuns,whoconductedanorphanageatChangchun, Manchuria,weresocovered withspittlebytheCommunist-enragedmobduring theirtrialthattheycould notsee.Theywerealso kicked,beaten,peltedwith refuse,andthreatenedwith beingburnedalive.
Washington.-Voluntary decencyinthemoviespays off,financiallyandstatistically,EricJohnJohnston, presidentoftheMotionPictureassociationofAmerica,pointedout.Besides showingabox-officegain fromthewiderfamilyappealthatgoodfilmsenjoy, theProductionCodeadoptedbythefilmindustryhas practicallyendedthethreat offederalanldstatecensorship,Johnstonexplained.
Recallingthesituationin theindustrypriorto1930, whencensorshipboards wereappearingalloverthe nation,andtherewasagitationforfederalcensorship, Johnstonstated:"Youcan readilyunderstandwhatit wouldhavemeantiffilms hadtobeconsoredby48 statesandinnumerable countries,plusthefederal government."Seldomdo consorshipboardsagreeon whatiscensorable,heexplained;somepasswhat anotherdeletes,andthe hodgepodgethatresultsentailsthetremendousexpenseofmakingfilmsover tomeetlocalrequirements.
Tomeetthedifficultyof interminableandexpensive censorship,thefilmindustryadoptedtheProduction Codeof1930,administered thenbyHaysoffice,which hasbecometheEricJohnstonoffice. Thegeneral principleslaiddownbythe filmindustryforself-censorshipwereasfollows:
1.Nopictureshallbeproducedthatwilllowerthe moralstandardsofthose whoviewit.Thesympathyoftheaudienceshall neverbethrowntotheside ofcrime,wrong-doing,evil, orsin.
2.Correctstandardsof life,subjectonlytotherequirementsofdramaand entertainment,shallbepresented.
3.Law,naturalorhuman, shallnotberidiculed,nor shallsympathybecreated foritsviolation.
Adherencetotheprinciples,Mr.Johnstonrecalled,hasbroughttothefilm industrythesebenefits: Sincethecodecamein,no statehassetupacensorshipboard;censorshiplaws remaininbutsevenstates, largelyaholdoverfromprecodedays;andtalkoffederalcensorshiphasdied down.
Thecodehas"raisedthe wholetoneofourindustry," Mr.Johnstonsaid.Asked whetherthecode"stiflesartisticexpression,"thefilm officialretorted:"Nonsense. Thereisnogood,storythat cannotbetoldwithinthe boundsofdecencyandgood taste."(NCWCWire.)
