FatherCunninghamwasoneof33ordainedatthesametime,ofwhomfivewere Australians.Thegroupcomprised18differentnationalities.
FatherCunninghamreceivedhiseducationat ChristianBrothers'High school,Highgate,andat Aquinascollege.WhenSt. Charles'seminaryopenedin 1942,hebecameafoundationstudent. Hespentsixyearsthere undertherectorshipofthe MostRev.L.J.Goody. When the Vincentian Fatherstookcharge,Father Cunninghamwasappointed seniorprefect,andwasgiventheopportunityofcompletinghisstudiesinRome.

FromaY.C.W.pointof view,thestarsinaprogrammepackedwithincidentswere:MurrayWard, theonlymembertowintwo titles;BilldeGrucliy,Bill O'Grady,FrankO'Connell, BarryHanneyandGraham Ward.
AlthoughMurrayWard's sub-junior100ydswinwas good,itwasovershadowed byabeautifulexhibitionof hurdlingwhenhewonthe 100ydshura.es.Histime wasonly 1sec.outsidehis ownrecord.
Inthefinaloftheopen hundredtherewas,strangelyenough,onlytwo Y.C.W.competitorsThese twoBilldeGruchyand GrahamWardupheldany claimtosprintingfamethat theclubmayhave.Billwon intheAustralianrecord timeof9.6secs.andGraham ranoneofthebestracesof hiscareertotakethird place.Unfortunatelyitwas consideredthatthewind wastoostrongtoallowBill toclaimtherecord.
Itiscorrectthatananemometershouldbeused, anditwasgoodtoseeone inuseatLeedervilleonSaturday.But,inthecaseof thevalidityofBill'sAustralianrecord,itwould havebeenequallycorrect tohaveusedawind-sockto insurewhetherthestrong breezeblowingwouldhave beenanassistance.
Laterintheafternoon Billwonthe100metresinvitationhandicap.Histime of10.6secswasonly1secs. outoftheAustralianrecord.
BillO'Grade,inwinning thebroadjump,provedhis outstandingabilityandhis inconsistency.Nearlyallof hisnojumpswerebetter thanhislegitimateones. Theonlyonetobemeasuredwas24'2"-anexceptionaljump.
FrankO'Connelland BarryHanney,intheJunior mileand440yds.respectivelybothwoninasimiliar fashion.Neithertimeswere exceptional,butunderthe conditionsbothweregood.
Hanney'stimeof526secs. waspossiblybetterthanit appearsashedrewthe secondoutsidelaneandhad tomakehisownrunning.
Inthe440goodperformanceswerealsoputup. TedKnightandTerry Hughanwhocame3rdand 4threspectively.

Dr.Goodycongratulated thebranchonthesplendid numberwhohadreceived HolyCommunionthat morning,andexhorted memberstocontinuefaithfultotherulesofmembershipoftheirsociety.Regu- larattendanceatthe monthlyHolyCommunion andthemonthlyevening devotionswerevitalrules whichshouldalwaysbeobserved,evenatthecostof greatpersonalsacrifice.
Apartfromthepersonal sanctificationoftheindividualmembers,oneofthe mainpurposesoftheHoly Namesocietywasthesalvationofsoulsbytheforce ofthegoodexampleof members.Veryimportant wasthegivingofgoodexamplebytheoldermemberstotheyoungmen,and especiallybyfathersto theirsons,wnomthey shouldalwaysendeavourto bringintotheranksofthe society.
Respectforauthoritywas essentialinaChristian community,andthatrespectbeganinthehome andinthefamily.Respect ofchildrenfortheirparents wasthekeystoneoftheedificeofmorallife,andall familyvirtuesstemmed fromthatrespect.
Toensurerespectparents mustgivegoodexampleto theirchildren;inparticular theyshouldseethattheir morallifewasabovereproach,theirhonestyabove question,theirspeechclean, andtheirreverenceforthe HolyNameferventandconsistent,andtheyshouldalso seethatinmatterssuchas gamblinganddrinkthey were-attheveryleastmostmoderate,forany slightloweringofthehigheststandardsinthesemattersloweredrespectand weakenedgoodexample.

Mr.Lynchexpressedpleasureatthenumericalgains thisyear.Hefelt,however,thatmoreimportant thanincreasedmembership weretheincreasedfervour ofexistingmembersand theircultivationofthe spiritofthesociety.
Mr.J.Nolanexpressed eloquentlythefeelingsof allpresentwhenheproposedavoteofthankstothe ladiesoftheparish,who hadprovidedareallysumptuousrepast.

Perhapsallofthisislikeadecalogueofdont's.But thereisapositivesidealso.TheAustraliandoes notwantthenewcomerutterlytotearuphisroots andforgetthepasthistoryofhismotherland.In particular,theNewAustralianshouldcherishhis nationalsongsanddances,thelatterinnationalcostume.These,morethananythingelse,tellofthe cultureandspiritofhispeopleandtheirvisualappealissuchthattheeducatedAustraliancanseean enrichmentcomingfromthemtohisownnational life.
Butaboveall,perhapstheNewAustraliancan fortifytheAustralianmoraleandwayoflifebypreservinginpublicworshipandpersonalexamplehis religioustraditions.Australiaislargelyamaterialisticnation,whichneedstheleav,eningofthe thingsofthespirit.Ifwefailtocapturesomethingofthesupernaturalweshallfindourselves onallfoursspirituallywiththecommonenemy-Communism.Manyofournewcitizenshadfled from'thehorrorsofMarxism,andsoonerperhaps thantheythinktheymaybecalledupontoshed theirbloodindefenceoftheiradoptedlandagainst thatcosmictyranny.Thatwillbethecrucialtest ofwhethertheyhaveacceptedandbeenacceptedby thislandofdestiny.

Thesepeopleowngreat herdsofreindeer,anduse themjustasweuseordinarycattle.

Recently,thenunsatthe Londonconvent,whereshe hadlivedandworkedduringthewaryears,received herletter.InitSister Anthonyspokeoftheworseningsituationandofthe over-presentpossibilityof martyrdom.
Sixdayslater,theylearnedfromalittlegirlintheir schoolthatthepaperswere alreadyreportingthatshe hadbeenmurderedthepreviousdayincoldblood.
BornintheBronxdistrict ofNewYorkCityin1900, SisterAnthonyspentmany yearsinBelgiumaftertakinghervowsasareligious oftheCongregationofSt. VincentdePaul.

Duringtherecentwar, SisterAnthonyperformeda varietyoftasksattheBlanfordstreetschool,inLondon'sWestEnd.TheSisterSuperiortheresaid: "Shewasamostversatile person,popularwitheveryoneandofamostlovable disposition.Hercheerfulnessandreadinesstosee thehumoroussideofany situationwereacomfortto allofuswhentheairraids madelifeuncomfortable.

"Alltheafternoonterroristskeptcomingintothe conventgrounds,"shesaid. "Thechildrenwereputin thecellarandournative boywentoutseveraltimes toaskthemtogoaway:
"Thenfiveofthemrushed throughwithbombsintheir hands,thefusesburning. SisterAnthony,ranoutto stopthem,shouting'No,no, no,youwon'tthrowthat." Buttheypushedheraside andthrewtheirbombs. ThenSisterAnthonyphoned theBritishforhelp.
