W.J.ManginiSaysThatRare"Blue Sun"WasObservedatNewNorcia
AttherequestofFatherBrennan,Iaccompanied himtoNewNorciaandinterrogatedarepresentativecross-sectionofthosewhohadobservedtherepottedphenomena.Theanswers,whilediffering agooddealinmanydetails(indicatingatthemoat alimiteddegreeofcollusion)agreedincertain ratherimportantrespects.Thefollowingconclusionsseemwellsubstantiated:-
Firstly:Theraysandcirclesreportedtosurroundthesunwereprobablydueto(a)lightscatteredbytheinterveningclouds,and(b)theordinaryhalationpropertotheeyeobservingbrightobjects.Therewasnoindicationthattherayswere undulylong,ordifferentfromwhatmightbeexpectedfromthesecauses.
ThereportofMr.ManginiontheNewNorcia phenomenon.printedon thispage, indicatesthat, inhisopinion.thereportedphenomenoncould havebeencausedbynaturalforcesInvestigationsintothematterwere carriedoutduringthe week.andwerestepped upwhenitwasfound thatthetwo (reprintedphotographs onthispage) takenbyoneofthegirls whosawthephenomenon, showeddistinctraysof lightcomingfromthesun andreachingtheearth closetothecamera.
Aseriesofcomprehen- siveinterviewswerecarriedoutyesterdayatNew Norcia, andtheoriginal camerawasusedtotakea seriesofphotographsof thesun.Whenthesewere developedlastnightit wasfoundthatalens defect(commontomost simplecameras)existed andthusnospecialsignificancecouldbeattributedtotheoriginalphotographs.
"TheRecord'isindebtedtoMr.Manginiforhis scientifichelpandforthe manyhourshedevotedto thepreparingofcharts andquestionnairesfor interviews.
Secondly:The"spinning"ofthesunrequiresa carefulconsideration.Itisdifficulttoseehowa featurelessdiscsuchasthesunpresentscouldbe observedtospin,yetallobserversagreedthatitdid so.However,theywereprettyevenlydividedcon= cerningthesenseoftherotation.Theexplanation probablyliesinthewell-known"shimmering"effect seenwhenthesunislookedatdirectly-this;of course,isonlypossiblewhenitsbrillianceisconsiderablyreduced,e.g.,bycloudorbycloseproximity tothehorizon.Undersuchconditionstheorbof thesunpresentsadistinctly"fluid"appearance, causedeitherbyatmosphericrefractionorbyphysiologicalreactionsoftheeye,orbyboth.The statementspresentedindicatedthatthisphenomenon,togetherperhapswithalittlesuggestion, couldeasilygiverisetotheobserved"spin."Some observersreportthattheyhaveseenthesamespin regularlysincethefirstoccasion,ineachcasetowardssunset.Onedidnotseeitonthefirstoccasion,hasseenitsince.Thusthisexplanationwould seemjustified.
Thirdly:Theuniformityofthestatements,and thecertaintyoftheobservers,makeitdifficultto denythatduringapartatleastofthemanifestation, thesunappeareddeeplycoloured,probablyofabluishgreen.Theapparentintensityofthesunatthis timewasconsiderablyreduced-anecessaryconditionifcolourwastobeobserved.Thisphenomenoniscertainlyarareone,butbynomeansunknown.Aredsunis,ofcourse,aneverydayexperience-itiscausedbytricksofatmosphericabsorptionandscattering,inwhichsomeofthecolourswhichmakeupthesun'swhitelightarelostin transit'throughtheearth'satmosphere,andonlythe redderpartsreachtheeyedirectly.Similaraction bycloudsofcertainconstitutionsseemssometimes toproducethesamesortofeffectresultinginablue orgreensun.Bluesunswerewidelyreportedin Europeforadayorsosomemonthsago.Moderatelydensehighcloudseemstohavequiteapronouncedeffectonthesun'sapparentcolour.
Fourthly:Theothercoloursreportedasobservedduringtheperiodunderdiscussion-redandgold rays;thepurpleandgoldtintingofthecountryside, etc.-donotseemtodiffermateriallyfromthose oftenobserved(notnecessarilysimultaneously) duringcloudysunsets.
Fifthly:Mostofthoseinterrogateddidnotseen aufaitwithquitecommonmeteorologicalphenomena-theyhadusuallyseenthem,buthadclearly notobservedverycloselynortakenmuchinterestin them.Unfamiliaritywouldenhancetheirrespect foraphenomenonsuddenlyandperhapsdramaticallypresented.
Sixthly:Photographstakenoftheoccurrence showeddistinctlongraysemanatingfromthesun. Anexaminationofthecamera'withwhichphotographsweretakenshowedthattheserayswereprobablyduetoimperfectionsofthelens,causingapronouncedspinarflareofabrightobjectsuchasthe sun.
