TheBishop-electthen readthelistofdonations, whichtotalledmorethan £500.Itwillbesubsequentlypublishedinthese columns.
Preachedbythe Rev. P.AbramoO.M.I.,thenovenaattractedhundredsof ItaliansfromFremantlandsurroundingdistricts. Thehighlightofthefunctionwasthepresenceofthe entirecongregationatCommunionontheSaturday morning.
TheBishop-electsaidthat presbythefoundationsofthepresbyteryhadbeenlaidinOctoberoflastyear.Itwas threemonthsbeforemuch brickworkwasdone.Then therewasalongdelayfor tiles,whichwentononly twomonthsagoandRussell Brotherswereabletocompletethebuilding.
Dr.Goodypaidparticular tributetoGeraldandPat Russellforasplendidjob. Theyhadworkedmany hoursovertimeforwhich therewasnocharge.Mr. VicRosehaddoneallthe paintingfreeofcharge.Mr. JohnVerstegen,arecent Dutcharrival,hadcarried outalltheelectricalwork freeofcharge.Mr.Joe Dominishandpartnerhad laidthedrivesandpaths.
Hepaidtributetotheunstintedworkofalmostall theparishioners,menand women,forthepasteight months,Saturdayafter Saturday.NoSundaywork hadbeendone.

TheArchbishopsaidhe wasdelightedwiththeprogressinBedfordPark.He recalledtheday15years agowhenhehadstoodon thatsiteanddecideditwas anadmirableonefora church.
Asizeableparcelofland wasthenacquiredatavery reasonableprice.Shortly afterwardsthenewschool wasbuiltfortheverymodestfigureof£1,955.Itwas saidatthetimethatitwas beforeitstime.Butthe subsequentyearshadvindicatedthedecision.Itwas nowtoosmallandapplicationhadbeenmadetoadd extraclassrooms.
HisGracesaidhehad beenamazedtohearthat theapplicationhadbeenrefused.Itwasallthemore amazingbecausehehadinformationthatthelocal Stateschoolwastaxedfor accommodation,andpress reportsrevealedhowshort ofteacherstheEducation Departmentwas.

"Abouthalfthemoney,'' theannalistwrotes,"was providedbyBrotherRyan fromorphanagefunds,and theotherhalfwasadvancedbytheBankofN.S.W., whichwasquicklyrepaid." Unfortunately,hedoesnot tellushowBishopGibney acquiredthesite.Thereis atraditionthattheBishop favouredthequietbanksof theCanningtoridehis horse,andthereonedayhe metanoldchaplivingina roughcampwhoshowed theBishopanaturalspring ofwater.TheBishoplost notimeinpurchasingthis valuablesite.WhatextraordinaryvisionhisLordshiphad!

Asweseeit,thecomingreferendumisapurely politicalissuewhichleavestotheconscienceand politicalviewsoftheindividualthedutyofvoting forwhateverheconsidersright.Onething,however,standsout.Australiafacesthegreatestdangerithaseverknowninitsshorthistory.Surroundedbyenemieswithoutandweakenedbyenemieswithin,wemustbereadytofacethefactthat theenemieswhoareworkingtooverthrowour nationfromwithinconstituteafifthcolumnwhose solepurposeistheoverthrowofournation;whoare activelyworkingforthemostviciousdiabolical powereverseeninthehistoryoftheworld.They arenotjustanotherpoliticalparty;theyaretraitors toourcountry.
TherecanneverbeanycompromisewithCommunism.Wehateitbecausewehatesin;wehate itbecauseitistheenemyofGod,theinstrumentof thedevilwehateitbecausewhilethereisasingle Communistinourmidstthereisatraitortoour, country,amenacetoourfreedom.
Despitewhatpoliticiansmaysaytothecontrary,thegrowthofCommunisminAustraliahas beenfosteredbytheirownineptitude,short-sightedness,andfailuretoplacetheinterestsofournation beforethepettysquabblesofinter-partystrife.Both politicalpartiesstandaccusedbeforetheAustralian peopleofbetrayingourcountryinthismatter.No materwhattheymightsay,nomatterhowthey maynowcondemnCommunism,thefactremains thatforyearstheCatholicChurch,andtheCatholic Churchalone,hasrecognisedandfoughtthismenace,oftenindeedhinderedinitsfightbythosevery politicianswhonowsoardentlychampiontheanti-, Redcampaign.

NolegislationwillkillCommunism.Youcannotfightanidealogywithforce.JustaspersecutionhasneversuppressedtheChurch,soanti-Red legislationwillnotsuppressCommunism.Itwill hinderit,itwillmakeitsaimofSovietisingthis countryfarmoredifficult,butitwillnotcrushit. Martyrsareneededforeverycause,andtheReds inAustralianeedmartyrs,astheycannotusethe "exploitationoftheworkers"lineinacountry wherepovertydoesnotexist.
Theproposedlegislationhasnotbeenforcedon thepeople.InallfairnesstoMr.Menzies,itmust berecognisedthatthedissolutionoftheCommunistpartywasoneofthemajorplanksoftheplatformonwhichhewaselectedtopower.Nomatter whattheoutcomemightbe,hehasshownstatesman-likeacumeninpassingtheissuetothepeople. Hecould,nodoubt,havefoundsomewayofpassingthenecessarylegislationwithouttakingthe peopleintohisconfidence.Tohiseverlastingcredit,however,hehasnotdonethis.Itisuptous, thepeople,todecide.
LegislationmustbeuniformandAustralian widetofightthisevil.TheCrimesAct,whichthe OppositionstatesgivestheGovernmentsufficient powertodealwiththeRedmenace,isthevery thingthattherecentTradesUnioncongresswantedabolished.
Thefearof'hattheRedsmightbeabletodo weretheydrivenundergroundisaveryprevalent fear.Thoseofuswhohadanyexperiencewith Undergroundactivitiesduringthewarknowfull wellthepowerofanorganisedandmilitantminority,butthequestionwehavetofaceis:"Whatdo weknowabouttheiractivitiesnow?"Drivenunderground,cantheydoanymoreharmtoournation thantheyaredoingnow?
Wemustrecognisethefactthattheaveragei laymanandpoliticianknowsneattonothingoftheir activities.ThePrimeMinisterhasaccesstoknowledgedeniedus,hassourcesofinformationwhich shouldlaybaretohimthewholeghastlypatternof deceitandtreacherywhichmenacesourcountry, andhehasthedistinctionofhavingtakenthefirst majorsteptoclosingourenemies'bridgehead.
Therehasbeenalotoftalkaboutthepossibly destructionofourlibertiesshouldthislegislationbe passed.Mostofthis,,however,seemstobehysteriawithoutfoundation,astheproposedBilldeals withCommunistsandCommunistsalone.Ifthe Australianpeopleshouldvoteintopoweraparty liabletousethispowergiventhemagainstpeople.1 otherthanCommunists,wewouldhavenoneto blamebutourselves.
Nomatterhowthepeoplemaydecide,thereis onepointthatmusthekeptinmind.Thecrisis thatnowfacesuswouldneverhadarisenhadeither ofthemajorpoliticalpartiesinAustraliatakenthe democraticwayofsuppressingCommunism-the compulsory,secret_supervisedballot.Nomatter whatlegislationmaybepassed,Redinfluenceinthe' unionswillnothedispelleduntilthatstepistaken.
WhetherornotthepowertodealwiththeproblemwillbegiventheGovernmentremainstobe seen.Nomatterwhattheresultwillhe,Mr.Menzieswillhavethesatisfactionofknowingthatheat leasthasfacedandattemptedasolutiontoaproblemthatothershavebeenfrightenedtotouch,a problemthatmaywelldetermineournationalsurvival.
