HowtheChurchDistinguished God'sInspirationinScriptures

Wehadsomethingtosay recentlyaboutthequestion oftheInspirationofthe SacredScriptures.Weare nowaskedtoshowhowit iswecandistinguishthe inspiredwritingsfromthe otherandcontemporary writingsaboutthelifeand timesofChrist how, inotherwordstodistinguishbetweenthegenuine andtheaprocryphal.

A.Asyouknow,we CatholicsholdthatGodis theprincipalauthorofthe bookswhichmakeupHoly Writ.Hemakesuseofhumanauthorstowritethose books,butitisHewhodecideswhatistobewritten. How,then,arewetoknow thatoneaccountof,say, thelifeandsayingsofJesus ChristhasGodforitsauthorandanotheraccount isapurelyhumandocument?

Thehumanauthormay assertthatwhathewrites downiswrittendownundertheinspiration, but thatmereassertionisnot sufficientwarrant. The writermayhavebeendeceived, orhemaybetryingtohoaxus.Thereis alsothepossibilitythatthe writerisunconsciousofthe factthatwhatheiswriting isinspiredscripture. He maynotknowthatGodis usinghimasaninstrument.

DivineTradition

RevealsInspiration

ToknowthatGodhas writtencertainbooks, inthe sensethatHehasdecided whatthosebooksaretocontainandhasusedahuman authortoperformthe mechanicaltaskofwriting thebooks, weneedarevelationfromGod.Thistruth, thatrevelationisnecessary inordertoknowthatagivenbookisinspired, isacceptedbyallCatholics. For usthereisnohumantestimony, nohumancriterion sufficientlytrustworthyto provethefactofinspiration ortovindicatetheclaimof anyparticularbooktosuch auniqueprivilege.

Werejectasfalseorinsufficienttheothercriteria whichhavebeenputforward.Tothosewhohold thattheinspirationofthe Biblecanbeknownfrom thesublimemajestyofits language, orfromthetruth andharmonyofitsdoctines, orfromtheexcellenceofits moralstandardswereply thatthesequalitiescanbe foundinotherbooks, and often, indeed, withgreater easethanincertainparts oftheBible.

ThefactisthatHolyWrit itselfdoesnotfurnishany satisfactoryproofofitsown inspiration:wemustseek proofelsewhere. Some wouldclaimthatsuchtestimonyisgivenbytheHoly Ghost, speakingdirectlyto man'sheart.Wedonot denythevalueinaparticularcaseofadirectcommunicationfromtheHoly Spirit, butwecannotsee sucharevelationbeinggiventoallmen.Norcanwe forgetthatsuchacriterion

wouldleavetoomuchroom forillusionorhallucination.

Thuswereturntotheonlytruecriterionofinspiration,acriterionwhichof itsnature,iscapableof provingthefactofinspirationinitstruesense,acriterionwhichappliestoall thebooksoftheHolyscripturesandonlytothem,a criterionwhichholdsgood forallmenandwhichis easilyaccessibletoallmen, acriterionwhichgivesus certainty,thecertaintyof ourFaith.TheHolySpirit whoinspiredtheBible,has revealedthefactofthatinspirationinDivineTradition.

ThisrevelationisconveyedtousbytheChurch.She tellsusthatGodhaswrittenthebooksoftheBible andconfidedthemtoHer care,andsheremovesall doubtwhenshegivesthe listofinspiredbooks,which wecalltheCanonofSacredScripture.

Themostformaldefinitionofthislistwasgiven bytheCouncilof'Trent. AsregardstheNewTestament, whichaloneconcerns LIS here, thecouncil namedfivehistoricalbooks (fourGospelsandtheActs), twentytwodidacticbooks (fourteenepistlesofStPaul andsevenCatholicepistles), andonebookofprophecy (theApocalypse,orRevelationsastheProtestantscall it)Thisdefinitionisthe immediateruleforus:we canthusclassifyallother Gospels,Acts,Epistlesand Apocalypsesasaprocryphal ornotgenuine.Butwemust rememberthattheCouncil ofTrentmerelydefined whatwascontainedinTraditionLetusexamine brieflyhowthisrevelation abouttheinspiredbooksof theNewTestamentwas handeddownfromthetime oftheApostles

Werecalltheconcrete circumstancesinwhichthe N.T.bookswerefirstcirculated.Wearesoaccustomedtoseeingthe27books oftheN.T.boundtogether inasinglevolumethatwe sometimesforgetthateach ofthesebookshasitsown history.Eachbookwasissuedseparatelyandeven whentheyhadallbeen issued,saybytheyear110, A.D.,completecollections wouldbecomparatively few. Afterall,thewritten wordcameonlysecondin importance:thefaithcame byhearing,notbyreading. Moreoverthefirstcentury didnotknowtheartof printing,norofeasyand rapidcommunication.The morewerealisethatbooks werescarceandtheircirculationslow,thebetterwe understandthehistoryof theCanonoftheNewTestament.

Again,fromthemanner inwhichSt.Peterspeaks ofSt.Paul'slettersitis clearthatatleastapartial collectionofthemmust havebeenknowntohis readers.Hesays:"Asalso ourmostdearbrotherPaul, accordingtothewisdom giventohim,haswritten toyou;asalsoinallhis epistles,speakinginthem ofthesethings,inwhichare certainthingshardtounderstand,whichtheunstableandtheunlearned wrest,astheydoalsothe otherscriptures,totheir owndestruction."Pet.iii.15 -16.WemaynoteinpassingthatSt.PeterputsSt. Paul'slettersonthelevel withtheOldTestamentand thatheissuesawarning againstthedangersofincompetentinterpretation.

Itseemsonlyreasonable tobelievethatthemostimportantChristiancommunitieswouldbethefirstto possessacompleteNewTesment.Smallercommunities, especiallyinremote places, mightforsometime havebutafewofthe books.ThesimpleNewTestamentlibraryofanearly Christiancommunitywould probablyconsistofcopies oftheGospelsandofthe moreimportantepistlesof St.Paul.

Astimewenton,thecollectionwouldgrow.AnotherepistleofSt.Paulwould beacceptedreadilyenough. butintheabsenceofadefiniteguaranteetheremight besomehesitationabout acceptingthewritingsofan Apostlelesswellknown. Thuswecanunderstand howaparticularcommunity mightbeslowtoaccept theEpistleofSt.Jude.

Itisalsoclearthatan epistleofobviousdogmatic importancewouldfindadmissionmorereadilythan oneofamoreprivate character.Andfinallywe mustnotethatcaution wouldincreasewhenthe aprocryphalwritingscame intocirculation.Theapostolicauthorshiporapprobationofaparticularbook notbeingalwaysimmediatelyevident, genuinebooks mighteasilybequestioned andperhapsevenrejected byaparticularcommunity.

HowDoubtsArose

AndWereResolved

Inparticularsevenbooks wereforcedtoawaitdefiniteinclusioninthecanon. TheywereHebrews,James,Jude,2Peter,2and3 JohnandApocalypse. We havealreadyseenthatsuch doubtanddiscussionarose onlyinthecaseofbooks whichseemedtolackapostolicauthorshiporapostolicapprobation.Bytheend ofthesecondcenturyall ourbooksoftheNewTestamentweregenerally knownandtheinspiration ofatleasttheprincipal booksuniversallyaccepted, afterconsideredjudgment hadbeenpassed.

Fromthebeginningofthe thirdcenturytothemiddle ofthefourthcenturywas aperiodofexaminationand discussionoftheremaining books.Ifmostofthesehad beenfamiliartocomparativelyfew, thereasonsare obvious.Somewerevery brief, orofslightdogmatic importance, andconsequentlywerenotsofrequentlyquoted.Others cametobesuspectedfora morepositivereason;they werequotedbyhereticsin supportoffalsedoctrines. Wecaneasilyunderstand howthepatronageofthe hereticswouldengendera prejudice, atleastinaparticularcommunity, either againstabookthatwas likelytobeacceptedor againstabookthathad alreadybeenacceptedby all. OfthistheApocalypseis aninstructiveexample.Up tothethirdcenturythere wasscarcelyasinglevoice todenythatitwasaninspiredbookwrittenbySt. John.Foritsacceptanceat varioustimesbyvarious churchesbothintheEast andintheWest, wehave overwhelmingevidencein thewritingsofsuchauthoritiesasSt.JustinMartyr, St.Irenaeus,St.Hippolytus, ClementofAlexandria,TertullianandOrigen.
