Masswascelebratedby theRev.W.SaulS.J.,with theRev.J.Crowe,C.Ss.R., asdeaconandtheRev.P. Kelly,sub-deacon.The dutiesofMasterofCeremonieswerecarriedoutby theRev.J.Hawkins,S.J. HisGracewasattended bytheRt.Rev.Mgr.E.Moss andtheRt.Rev.Mgr.J.T. McMahonasdeaconsatthe throne.TheRev.J.Hogan wasassistantpriest.

Fiveofthepupilswho firstenrolledwhenthe Loretosistersfirstopened theirschoolintheWest werepresent.Theywere Miss0.Grave,MrsRogers, Mrs.O'Dea,Mrs.ThompsonandMissMonicaJoyce.

Thedelayinobtaining thepermithadbeeninitally causedbythesectarian attitudeofthesecretaryof theMundaringRoadBoard inasupposedlyconfidentialreporttotheState HousingCommission.

Whenthisbecameknown theCatholicmenofthe districtmadeastrongprotestandappealtotheratepayersofthedistrictat theirannualmeetingin Januaryofthisyear.Asa resulttheratepayersrequestedRoadBoardmemberstoinstructtheRoad Boardsecretarytoinform theStateHousingCommissionthatuponreceiptof morecompleteinformation henowfavouredthebuildingofaCatholicschoolin Mundaring.

ItisbelievedthatRoad Boardmemberssawfitto ignorethewishesoftheratepayersfromwhomthey willdoubtlesslyhearmore atthenextannualmeetingandattheelections.

ThelifeofCharlesPeguy, whohaswrittenatleastone ofthemasterpiecesof Frenchliterature,isamysteryofgrace.Amanwho wassointellectuallyconvincedandsofilledwith faiththatheistheauthor ofsomeofthemostbeautifulofCatholicpoetry,he delayedforyearshisreturntothesacraments.He hadatremendousinfluence uponsuchpersonsasthe Maritains,andhiswritings continuehisapostolicwork inmodernFrance.

BornonJan.7,1873,at Orleans,whereBishopSt. Aignanstoppedtheadvance ofAttilainthefifthcenturyandwhereJoanofArc ralliedtheforcesofFrance 1,000yearslater,Peguywas wasofpeasantstock,and wasalwaysproudofhis origin.Hismother,after herhusband'sdeathwhen Peguywasstillaninfant, madealivingbymending chairs.Proudofhispeasantstock,Peguysaidthat whenanoldFrenchpeasant speakstheraceitselfspeaks throughhislips.

At12Peguywassentto theLyceeatOrleansasa scholarshipstudent,and wenttoParisin1891to prearefortheEcoleNormale.Thoughreareda Catholic,bythistimehe hadlosthisfaith.After ayearofpreparationfor theEcoleNormalehefailedintheentranceexaminationsandenlistedformilitaryservice.

HeHasMysterious VerbalAuthority

Afterhisperiodofmilitaryservicein1893,heenteredtheLyceeSainteBarbe,whereSt.Ignatius Loyolahadoncebeena student,stillwiththeEcole Normaleinmind.Itwas atSainte-BarbethatPeguy'sinfluencefirstbegan tobefelt.JulianGreen saysofPeguyatthistime (GodSpeaks,Pantheon Books,NewYork,p.8.):

"Hewasonthesmall sidebutveryrobustanda littleheavilybuilt.His browneyeshadawayof suddenlyflashingwhen ideasstruckhim;theywe'h thebold,forcefuleyesofa master.Hisbeautifuland delicatelyformedhands crushedyourownintheir powerfulgrasp.Whenhe spoke,therewasimmediate silenceandeveryonelistened.Whyorhowthisyoung manof20exercisedsuch authorityremainsasmysteriousasgeniusitself.He

Inthemeantime,however,hehadsetupaSocialistbookshop-May1,1898withfinancialhelpfrom hiswife.In1901hesetup apublishingfirmofhisown tobringoutafortnightly publicationcalled"LesCahiersdelaQuinzaine",each issuebeingabookinitself. Someofthenumbersconsistedalmostexclusivelyof Peguy'swritings,oftenindignantattacksonthe modernworldwhichhe hated.

Theyearswerefilled withfinancialworriesand strugglestosupporthis familyandtokeepthe "Cahiers"going, They mustalsohavewitnesseda greatspiritualstrugglein thesoulofCharlesPeguy. Despitethescantattentionhisworkreceived,Peguyfeltthathistimewas drawingshortandredoubledhisliteraryefforts.A yearbeforehewastobe killedinaction,oneofhis sonsfelldesperatelyillof typhoidfever.PeguypromisedOurLadytomakea pilgrimagetohershrinein Chartresifthechildwere saved.Itwashisaccount ofthispilgrimage,oddly enough,thatbroughthim hisfirstrealrecognitiona fewmonthsbeforehedied. WhenWorldwarIbroke out,Peguywas41andcould haveremainedinthereserves.Buttodosowas unthinkableforamanof hiskind,andhevolunteered.Commissionedalieutenant,hefoughtvaliantlyas theenemyadvancedrelentlesslythroughNorthern Franceuntilstopped,inthe firstweekofSeptember, 1914,alongtheMarne.On Sept.3,Peguy'sregiment wasquarteredInadeserted convent.Hespentthenight decoratingOurLady'saltar withflowers.OnSept.5 hismenengagedtheenemy, andPeguy,leadingthemon, wasshotthroughtheforehead.

Peguy'swife,whohad been obstacleperhapsthegreatest tohisfullpractice ofthefaith,becameaCatholicafterhisdeath.Their childrenhadalreadybees baptized.

KalgoorlieThriller EnthusesAudience

Thischillingmurder drama,byEdwardPercyandReginaldDenham,isno strangertoPerthaudiences. Onlyafewyearsagoitwas producedbytheRepertoryClub.Thesameistrueof "BlitheSpirit."BothRepertoryproductionswere first-rate;sothecountry clubshadtobegood.They were.Theybroughtaudiencesofhardenedplay-goersalmosttotheirfeet 'withdeafeningapplauseat theendof Whateachproduction. perhaps,wasmostnoticeable, wastheextraordinaryattentiontodetailin bothproductions.Atcurtain risebothsetswerewarmlyapplauded-thatfor"Ladies inRetirement"beingpar- ticularlydifficulttoexecute. Itwasaneducationinwhat couldbedoneattheAs- semblyHall-oftenmaligned foritspoorstage.Thesets forthe vividtwopraysprovided contrasts-theonea 19thcenturystudyin brownsandantiques,the otheramoderninterior withemphasisonsheenand gaycolours.Inbothplays thelightingwascarefully thoughtout,andmadeto servetheactiontobestadvantage.Costumeswere faultless.

Thecharacterwasalittle astrayinthatitwasdifficulttocreditherwith murderousintent.Shewas toostrongandkindly. Perhapshadsheshown flashesoftheinsanitywhich wasinherfamilyshewould havebecomeamorecon-vincingmurderess.

Louisa(JoanAnderson) wasthemoreconvincingof themadsisters,Ithought. Shewaspathetically,childish,andstrangelyap- pealinginhergentleness.

Emily(NancyJamieson) washarshandunattractive,andwhileshebehavedoutwiirdlylikeapersonof unsoundmindherthoughts andherutteranceswere thoseofasaneandshrewd woman.

AlbertFeather,theras- callynephewofthemurderess,wasexceptionally wellplayedbyJohnHarris, makinghisfirststageappearanceIunderstand.It shouldcertainlynotbehis last.Hehasmuchtalent.

BilleeRoutledgemadeas convincinganunasyou couldhaveonthestage. MargaretScottinvestedthe servantroleofLucywith charmandreality.Frieda Vincentproducedthisprizewinningplay,andalsotook aneffectivepartinitas LeonoraFiske,themurder victim.

Coward'sComedyIs WorthaLongRun

ThissparklingNoel CowardcomedywasspiritedlypresentedbytheBun-

buryRepertoryClub.The trademarkofNoelCoward wasstampedalloverit-in thebrightandcolourfulset, intherattleofcocktailglas- ses,intheswiftrepartee,in thesatinysheenofElvira's make-up,intheblonde gracefulnessofthechicand soigneeRuth,eveninthe sportinessofCharles'sattire.And,ofcourse,there was edalwaysthesharp-pointdialogue-thesatirical thrust,thenaughtytwist,thesuddendown-to-earth crudebombshell.

Ruth(JudyCullen)was lovely,andsocapable.Charles(LenCraddock)was harassed,andsolikeable. Bothgavefaultlessperformances,throwingtheirlines ateachotherwithexpert abandon.Elvira(Ainslie Joel)wasaGreciandream. AsDoctorandMrs.Bradman,FredFlanaganand GladysLloydfilledinnicely. GwenOdgerswasan amusing,ifnotentirely credible,maid.Butthe hitoftheeveningwas OliveEdwardsasMadameArcati-aperfect scream.Herewashigh comedyatitsrollickingbest -aperformancedeservingofaspecialaward;butI hearthatthisplayerwas notintheoriginalcaststeppedinatafortnight's notice,ifyouplease!Amost amazingfeat.Thehouse roared.

Productionwasby NormanThompson,who mustbehighlycomplimen- ted.Hekeptupaswiftpacewithoutlosingbalance.He sawtoitthatnodetailwas neglected.Heproduceda comedywhichcouldrunfor twoorthreeweeksatHis Majesty'sattopprices.It's apityit wouldwon't.Thepublic lapitup.

Thefinalyouth.Concert for1951washeldatthe CapitolTheatrelastThursday,andwasfairlywellattended,thoughnot, I thought,aswellasthepre- viousone.

ThesoloistwastheNew Australiantenor,John Franks,formerlyofthe RigaOperaHouse,who sangtheFlowerSongfrom Bizet's"Carmen"andthe Aubadefrom"LeRoid'Ys" byLalo.Therewasadistincttendencytoflatnes§in thefirstaria,notsonoticeableinthesecond,butthe purityandqualityofthe voicemorethanmade amendsforafaultwhich appearedtobeduemainly toanindispositiononthe partofthesinger.

Inresponsetoapplause Franksgaveasanencore Lenski'sariafrom"EugenOnegin"byTchaikowsky, anditwasinthiswork thatherdvealedhisreal forte.Itwasreallydelightful.

The theconcertopenedwith "CarnavalRomain"of Berlioz,andbeforethis work,aswellasbeforeall theotherorchestralitems ontheevening'sprogramme,SirBernard Hienzegaveasimpleanaly- sisandexplanationofthe musictotheaudience.It waswellreceived,and musthavehelpedmanyof theyoungpeoplepresent tounderstandthemusic better.

Asfortheperformance ofthisparticularpiece,it gotawaytoapoorstart,but settleddownafterthefirst dozenbarsintoareally goodrendition.

SirBernardHeinzeLaudsSymphony OrchestraAfterHisSuccessfulSixth Concert:MarkedImprovementSeen

Thesixthofthe1951 seriesoforchestralconcerts givenonAug.11andAug. 13wasthemostsuccessful todate,denotingaprogress somarkedthat,attheend of conductor,prolongedapplause,the SirBernard Heinze,feltmovedtoaddresstheaudience.

Inthecourseofashort enthusiasticaddressheremarkedthatonlyashort timeagohecouldnever havebelievedthatthePerth orchestracouldhavegiven suchafineperformanceor could'evenhaveplayedthe mainworkoftheevening,thesymphonyNo.5by Shostakovitch. acknowledgedSirBernardgracefully thatmostof thecreditwasduetothe carefulworkoftheperma-nentconductor,Mr.R. Pekarek.Thisisundoubtedlytrue,anditwould seemtofollowlogicallythat avisitingmusiciancould drawamorecarefreeper- formancefromanorchestra thatisstillinitsformative stage,thancouldtheman whohastodoallthecareful drudgeryofthenormal weeklyround.

Theconcertopenedwith aliveandsparklingperformanceofMozart'sdeservedlypopularovertureto "TheMarriageofFigaro." Thepacewasspiritedand thespiritofinfectiousgaietywascompletelycaptured.

Shostakovitch OftheworkoftheRussiancomposerShostakovitch,whoseSymphonyNo.5has comeinforafairamount ofdiscussion evaluationrecently,true ofitsplaceinthe world'smusicisnoteasily arrivedat.Onefeelsthathis true wouldmusicalinspiration haveflourishedmost inthefieldofmusical

thoughtcultivatedbythe laterRussianromantics.(A terrainbynowmuchtoo wellploughedover).

Hisearliereffortstowrite inamoreexploratoryvein werequicklynippedinthe budwhentheyincurredthe wrathofthebureauthatdirectsRussianmusical thoughtthesedays.Apparentlyrevolutionarythought mustbestrictlyconfinedto theprescribedformofsocial ideas. headWiselybowinghis totherisingstormof bureaucraticdispleasure,he wroteworksquiteeasilycomprehensibleatfirsthearing,andthoughtheycallto mindcontemporaryandrecentlydeadcomposers,are stillalivewithalucidity,vi- talityandthatqueerblend oftormenteddespairand sheerlovelinessthatmarks muchRussiancomposition.

Givingtheseworksapoliticallysuitableprogramme theyhavefoundgreatsuccess theseinRussia.Disregarding andallotherliterary programmesinmusic(evenwhentheylead"intheend towhereapathofjoyis found")Shostakovitchhas foundmuchappreciation thissideofthe"IronCur- tain"forthesheermusical worth andofhiscompositions; thatistheonlytrue basisfortheacceptanceor otherwiseofanycomposer's work.

WoodwindsPlease

Theperformanceofthe symphonywasadmirable.It istechnicallyexceedinglydifficult,andtheorchestra camethroughverywell.The woodwindplayingwasfirst rate,theintonationvery good,andinparticularthe horn allsectionaccomplished thatwasaskedofthem somuchmorehappilythan theydidintheBrahm's Symphonyatthepreviousconcert.Theplayingofthe

stringswassogoodandthat ofthefirstviolinsinparti- cularthatitwasalmosta revelation.

PreviouslyIhadthought thatthere accomplishedwerenotenough violinistsavailableinPerthtoproduce thevolumeofrichsinging tonethattheBrahm's FourthSymphonycallsfor.AfterhearingtheShostakovitchmelodiessingovertheorchestrasofreelyon SaturdaynightIadmit myselfcompelledtorevise thatopinion.Onefactorof courseisthattheRussian composerissomarvellously skilfulasanorchestrator, whileBrahmsoftenoverweightsaccompanyingparts tothegreatdetrimentof theprincipalmelodicline.

Therewasalsosomevery beautifulstringplayingin thehauntinglylovelyintermezzo,"Thelastsleepof TheVirgin,"fromMassenet'soratorio"LaVierge."

Oncemoretheorchestra demonstrateditsgrowing virtuosityintheThemeand VariationsfromSuiteNo.3 byTschaikowskibringinga notableconcerttoabril- liantconclusion.-
