Aletterfrom"Charles," ofMaylands verybrief andtothepoint:

"Wouldyoumindgiving meyourexplanationofI. Cor.,15:20?"

A.:You'vechosen,"Charles,"oneofthemostpuzzlingpassagesofSacred Scripture,andoneofwhich nowhollysatisfactoryexplanationhasbeengiven. However,beforewelaunch outintoanyattemptedexplanation,letusread throughthepassageforthe sakeoflistenerslesswell acquaintedwithit.

Itisthephrase"Baptisedforthedead:'thatisthe sourceofallthediscussion inthismatter,andIcannot claimtogiveadefinitive explanation.Thephraseis usuallysupposedtoreferto theunorthodoxpracticeof beingbaptised,asitwere, byproxy,onbehalfofthose

Others,e.g.,FatherMarco Sales,O.P.,thinkitmeans death-bedbaptism,asa proofofthedyingman's beliefintheResurrection.
