Althoughfoundedherein1897,'the InstituteoftheBlessedVirgin,orLoreto Nuns,areonlythisyearcelebratingthe goldenjubileeoftheirfoundation. wassetupongroundsextendingtotheSwanriver. Theoriginalfoundation inAdelaideterracewasthe homeofDr.Waylen,"The Bracken,"whichtheSisters purchasedfor£6,000and convertedintoadayand boardiugschool.Therollcallwas30girls,ranging fromfourto17.
In1901,however,thethen famous"Osborne"hotelat Claremontwasofferedfor sale.Itspositionwasideal forabckirdingschool,and sothepropertywasacquiredandtheboarderswere transferredfromPerthto thenewLoreto.Hence,itis atthislaterfoundationthat 50yearsofcontinuous teachinghasbeencarried out. Inthehalfcenturymany additionshavebeenmadeto theoriginalbuildingand newonceerected.
TheLoretoSisters'special workisthehighereducationofgirls-elevating,refining,andsunc.ifying womanhood.Loret has alsobecomeacentcfor week-endenclosedRetreats.
