FatherWilfridthenplaceduponthenewAbbotthe mantella,therochette,and thepectoralcross.The LordAbbotreceivedthe keys,signifyingthathetook officialpossessionofthe monastery.Hethenaddressedthecommunity,settingforthhisofficialdignityandthedutiesofsubjects.

TheLordAbbott,addressingthecongregation,said thatheregisteredtwofeel-ings-firstly,afeelingof immensegratitudetoAlmightyGod;thesecond feelingwasquitenovel,for
thefirsttimeheknewwhat itfeltliketobeafather.He wastheirFather,theywere hischildren.Hewastheir shepherd,theywerehis flock.Itwashisdutyto feedhisflockandkeepoff thewolf.Itwastheirduty toobey,butfearmustbe absent.Allmustbedone inlove. AfterMass,AbbotGregoryandAbbotCatalanmetthe people,shakinghandswith all.Thecelebrationconcludedwithafiestaatthe abbey.

Itseemedimpossibletoconceivethatpeoplegrowing upandaccustomedfrom childhoodtothishigh-lightingoftheromanticpartof love,wouldnothavetheir idealscolouredbyit.It wasnotthatoneparticular filmwasbadorharmful, butthatoveranumberof yearsthetotaleffectproducedwasharmful.

OnWednesday,the20th, weattendedaRequiem Mass,whichwassungby manypriests.HisGrace theArchbishoppresided.It wasalovelyMassandIwas verypleasedtowearmy cloakandveilonthisday, astheChildrenofMary formedaguardofhonour. Wewenttothecemeteryby specialbus,andwhenwe arrivedtheretheytookthe coffinoutofthehearseand proceededveryslowlyto 'theplaceofburial.Tears cameintomyeyesasthe coffinwasloweredintothe ground.
OnThursdayweattended schoolasusual.OnFriday21girlscamedown fromNorthambytrainto playbasketballagainstgirls fromourschool.Wewere delightedtobeabletosit downandwatchthemplay, becausetheywerevery gdod.Wewerethewipners.

Thiswasaplaywewere unabletorecommendbecauseofitsbarefacedcondonationofadultery.In otherrespectsitwasanhilariouscomedy,andwas
White.Itwasnotseductive,andprobablywould notharmanadultaudience ofthisblase20th.century; butitwasnoticeablethatit attractedanunusuallylarge numberofteenagers.This wastobedeplored.

ThisRepertorymusical, givenabroadsweeponthe commodiousstageofHis Majestystheatre,wasa greatsuccess-aproduction tobeproudof.Thestagingandcostumingwereexcellent,thelightingcarefullydirected.Thechoral workwasgood,theacting good,andthecomedyconstant.Chiefdeficiencywas, asusual,thelackofafirstratemalesinger;butAnne Holmes,intheprimadonna role,wasabovereproach. The 'vagabonds'were rathertooprettyandtqo well-dressed-andalso,at times,ratherchildish;but thegeneraleffectwasnot greatlyimpaired.James Kempputononeofhisbest actsastheextravagantly gracefulandrathermad courtier,andhewasably partneredbyIanMilbank. Themalelead,Leonard Walker,spokerichlyand acteddashingly.Theorchestrawasratherthin. MadgeSearcyproducedwithdistinction.
"CAESAR&CLEOPATRA"
Shaw'splaydidnot impress.Downtothefirst intervaltheproduction heldinterest,butthereafterittailedoff.Cleopatra wasbutaveryordinary slipofagirl,devoidofcolourandcharacter; Caesarhadnogreatness. TheseParegeneralisations meanttoindicatedisappointmentwiththeview takenoftwoofhistory's mostcelebratednames;it shouldnotbeinferred thatthepeopleactingthe partshadnoability. Thesewasagreatdealof abilitydisplayedbyall membersofthecast.But theover-alleffectwasdisappointing.
Asmentionedearlier,Ftatateetawasparticularlymemorable.Tosingleoutother playerswouldbetosetupinvidiousdistinctions.The production(byDavidBradleyandPhilipScott)moved alongatabriskrate.One .obviousdrawbackwasthe uniformyouthofthecast. Thisledtouniformityof voiceandinterpretation;so thatoldstersspokelike youngsters,andunderlings actedwithasmuchdashand verveasCaesarhimself. Result:insufficientlightand shade.
