AtriduumofHighMassesandspecial afternoonandeveningDevotions,fromJuly 14-16,markedthepreparationoftheCarmelitenuns,Dalkeith,fortheobservanceof theseventhcentenaryoftheScapulardevotion.Ontheclosingday,twonovicesreceivedthehabitoftheOrder.
TheHighMasseswereworldwithallitspleasures celebratedinthepublic chapelattachedtotheCarmel,anddrewgoodattendances.Specialsermonswere preachedbytheV.Rev.J. P.Wilkinson,C.M.;theV. Rev.P.Tatty,C.Ss.R.,and theV.Rev.T.Pearson, O.F.M.
ChoirsfromtheLoreto conventsatSwanbourne andNedlands,fromthe Presentationconvent,'Iona,' andfromSt.LouisJesuit schoolsangthemusicfor theMassesanddevotions.
Oneachdayofthetriduum,therelicofSt.Simon Stock,towhomtheScapulardevotionwasrevealed, wasveneratedbythefaithful.Aconsiderablenumberofpeoplewereenrolled inthescapular.
HisGracetheArchbishop presidedattheHighMass onJuly15.AfterMassthe impressiveceremonyofthe receptionoftheCarmelite habitbytwoyoungWest Australiangirlstookplace.
ThosereceivedwereMiss PaulineGuilfoyle,elder daughterofDr.andMrs. FrankGuilfoyle,andMiss GwendolineGibbs,only daughterofthelateMr. GibbsandMrs.Gibbs,of Perth.
MissGuilfoylereceived thenameofSisterMary CatherineofChristi,and MissGibbs,SisterMarie ThereseoftheChildJesus.
Preachingonthevocation toCarmel,FatherWilkinson saidthattomanypeoplethoseyoungsouls,seekingto begiventheHabitof Carmelandtoembracethe poverty,theausterity,the seclusionoftheOrder,were seekingdeath.TomanyoutsidethepaleoftheFaith, thoseyoungwomenwith lifebeforethemwerecommittinganactofsupreme folly.
Theywereseekingtobury themselvesinCarmel,to cutthemselvesofffromthe
andattractions.Therewere evensomeCatholicswho wouldseektorescuethem fromtheirmadness,who wouldgotoOurLordand begHimtoopentheireyes andbringthemtolifeagain. Theremightbesomewho wereovercomewithgrief, mourningoverthelossof youngliveshiddenwith ChristinGod.
TothemOurLordsaid today:"Fearnot.Thechild isnotdead."Andtoprove ittothosewhowouldstill notbeentirelyreassured, Hewouldtakethechildby thehandandsay:"Maid,I saytothee,Riseup!"For theseyoungwomenarecelebratingtheirbetrothalto Christ,theirSpouse.They wereseekingtodietothe worldthattheymightlive withChrist.
Theyweretakingthe Lordastheportionoftheir inheritanceandoftheircup andtheywerefullofconfidenceandjoythathewould restoretheirinheritanceto them.TheywouldtellTouif theycouldspeaktoyouthat, ifyouonlyknewthejoys ofCarmel,theworldwould bedeserted.
Allthatwastrue,forOur Lordwastakingthembythe hand;Hewassmilingupon them,liftingthemuptoa lifethatwasabovethatof othersofHiscreatures,not throughanymeritsoftheir own,butHisownunboundedlove.Theirswastobe thelifeofHisangelswho livedinHeaven,notbound bythetiesofanyhuman marriage,alifeofvirginity andspotlesspurity.
Theirswastobethelife oftheangelswhospend themselvesinpraisingHim andindoinggoodtosouls. ThatwasthelifeofCarmel, alifeofvirginity,alifeof prayerandalifeofzealfor souls,alifeofzealforGod's honour.

TheRev.E.J.Power, parishpriest,hasnowtaken upresidenceattheschoolchurch,Lionstreet,Carlisle. Throughtheefficiencyand energyofafaithful"busy bee,"aportionofthespaciousverandahhasbeenconvertedintotworooms,a bedroomandsittingroom.
Plansandspecifications forthenewpresbyteryhave nowbeencompleted.The contracthasbeenaccepted byRussellBros.,whohope tobeginworkinthenear future.Timeandpatience mustbethemainfactors,as itissodifficulttogetthe necessarymaterialsallat once.
Thetime-honouredsodalitiesoftheChurchhavenow beenestablished,theSac redHeart,withamembershipof40,theHolyName society,withamembership of45,andtheChildrenof Mary,withamembershipof 30.Itishopedtoincrease stillfurtherinnumbers thosesodalitiesastimegoes on.
Tofindwaysandmeans ofraisingmoneytomeet theparish'sfuturefinancial responsibilities,astrong churchcommitteehasbeen formed.Itwasdecidedat thefirstmeetingtoconduct abazaar,beginninginJuly andfinishingonNovember 24. Someofthestallholdershavealreadymade astart.
Ablockcollectionhas beenorganisedinthepar- ish,wherecollectorshave beenappointedforeach street.Itisthedutyofthe blockcollectortovisit weeklyeveryCatholicfamilyinhisorherstreet.

Soonafterwardswefind St.VincentinParis,which wastobethecentreofhis activitiesfortherestofhis life.Herehecameunder theinfluenceofaholyand wisecounsellor,thegreat CardinaldeBerulle.About thistimetheretookplace anotherincidentthatdisplayshisheroicvirtue.It wastohaveadecisiveinfluenceonhislaterlife. AfamouspriestwasexperiencingviolenttemptationsagainstFaith.He couldnolongersayMass, recitehisOffice,norentera church;everythingthatrecalledthethoughtofGod onlyseemedtoevokefrom himfrightfultemptationsto blasphemy.TheSaintbesoughtGodtorestoreFaith totheunfortunatepriest, offeringhimselftobearthe trial.Godacceptedhisoffering. Thepriest'sdoubtsvanished,andSt.Vincentwas plungedintoaterrifying darkness.Forfouryearshe sufferedthisunspeakable mentalanguish,during whichheplacedthearticles oftheCreedoverhisheart, andintheworstassaultsof thetemptationtouchedhis heartashisActofFaith. Atthistimealsohebegan organisingtheLadiesof Charity,wealthywomen whomhebandedtogether witharuleoflifetowork fortheassistanceofthe poor.Heorganisedanotherbodytoassistthese latter,womentakenfrom thepoorerclassesthemselvestobeknownasthe DaughtersofCharityunder St.LouisedeMarillac.They weretodevotethemselves tohelpthepoorandthe sickinwhateverwaythey needed-hospitals,schools, asylums,orphanagesvisitingthemintheirhomes.
Andsoitwasthatwhen theterriblewarsofthe Frondewereraging,bringingindescribablehorrorsof suffering,plagueandpovertyintheirwake,St.Vincentwasabletodistribute allkindsofreliefthrough thistremendousarmyof charitableworkers.More thansixteenmillionfrancs passedthroughhishandsin moneyalone,besidesfood, clothing,andmedicinefor thevictims.
TheactivitiesoftheSaint fromthistimetillhisdeath in1660,attheageofnearly 80years,aretoonumerous andtoovariedtodescribe.
Sogreatwerehisundertakingsthatwewonderhow onemancouldaccomplish somuch.Theansweristhat hewasamanofprayer.In hiseveryworkheconsulted Godfirst,andonlywhen certainthatitwasGod's Willdidheapplyhimselfto itwithallhisstrength,relyingonGod'sall-powerful assistance.

Oueofourbestknown lizardsisthesleepylizard, sometimescalledstumpy lizard,bob-tailgoanna,or shingleblack.Itsskinis protectedwithascalysuit ofarmourwhichisthickest andstrongestonthehead andback.Itsheadistriangularinshapeandjoined tothebodybyathinneck.
Whenabobtailisdisturbed,itthrustsoutitsbluishpurpletongueandmakesa hissingsound.Ithasears, butoftenthesearepartly blockedwithticksthatbury theirsmallheadsunderthe goanna'sskin.Unlikethe snake,ithasmovableeyelids.
Duringthecoldweather thegoannasgotosleepina hollowlog.Whenthewarm weathercomes,theyliketo liebytheroadside.Many aredestroyedbymotor cars,forbobtailistoolazy togetoutofthewayof anything.

NotverylongagoArthur MeelivedinEngland,and wastheeditoroftenpricelessbooks-TheChildren's Encyclopedia.Whenhe dieditwasindeedanationalcalamity,fornever beforehadthereliveda greater"childofwonder," andagreaterloverofchildrenthanhewas.Hehad averyacutemindandlovedtodelvetotheheartof things.Thuswhen,for example,hewasstudying thebuildingtrade,nothing wouldsatisfyhimbutto beginatthebeginningand tofollowtheerectionofthe housestagebystage.Besidesthishesawinahouse somethingmorethanmere bricksandmortar.There wasalwaystheromance foundintheevery-day thingsthatappealedtohim. Anditwasthisromance, thisjoy,thiswonderthathe putintothewordshewrote forchildren.
Whatmannerofaboy doyouthinkthismanhad been?Well,asyoucanwell believe,hewasadreamer,
butalovabledreamer.He wastaughtsingingbut,as hehimselfsaid,hewas neversurewhenhewasgoingupordown.Then,when heplayedtheviolininpublic,astringsnappedand sprangbackagainsthis nose.Thisbroughttears andahastyretreatfromthe platform.
Anotherpointwasthathe neverresteduntilhegot whathewanted.Ifitwere ivoryelephants,wellone wouldn'tdo.Hekeptatit untilhehadseveralof varyingsizes.Thenhe straightawayforgotelephantsandsoughtforother treasureswithequalzeal.
Thistraitofkeepingat thingsstoodhimingood steadwhenheenteredthe publishingtrade.Hebeganasalowlycopyholder and,partlybyhisability, andpartlybyunusualfund ofwonderanddreams,he keptrising,stepbystep, totheEditor'schairofsome ofthebiggestpublishing housesinLondon. Oneofthemainreasons whychildrento-dayhave theprivilegeofaCatholic educationisbecauseaman namedHenryParkes,more than60yearsago,decided thatnooneshouldbeallowedtogotoanybut Stateschools.
WhenParkesintroduced thecurseofseculareducationtoAustraliaandwithdrewGovernmentsupport fromprivateschools,he boastedthathisaction wouldbethedeath-warrant tothecallingoftheCatholicpriesthood.
Hemadeaverygrave mistake,whichheadmitted inhisoldage.Forhecalledintobeingnotonlythe secularschoolbutalsothe greatnetworkofCatholic schoolswhichyourparents keepgoingbypayingdoubletaxation.
Forallthat,itisonlyjust toadmitthatParkeswasin otherrespectsagreatstatesman.
InthisJubileeyearitis fittingthatmentionshould bemadeofSirHenry Parkes.HewastheFather ofFederationand,undoubtedly,wasoneofourgreatestAustrailans.Andasa boyhegaveclearpromise ofthemanhewastobecome.
HewasborninEngland in1815ofverypoorparents.Consequentlyheonly hadthreemonths'schoolingandhadtogotowork ataveryearlyage.His firstjobwasataropefactoryattheprincelysumof 4d.aday.Notonlywas thewagelow,buthismasterwasmostbrutal.On oneoccasionyoungHenry washitwithacrowbarand laysenselessforoveran hour.Heleftthisformof employmentandwenttoa brickyard,wheretheowner wasalsoacruelandhard master.
