Acoupleofquestionsnow from"J.B.O'C.,"ofLesmurdie.Iquote:

tion"Isitnecessarytosalvaforeveryhumanpenitenttobesubjecttothe Pope,orRomanPontiff,or isitanindispensableconditionofsalvation?"

A.:Ihadbetteradmitat theoutsetthatIamnot quitesurewhatyouwere thinkingaboutwhenyou wereformulatingthatquestion.Areyoureferringto theobediencewhichisdue tothePopeinhiscapacity ofsupremeteacherinmattersoffaithandmorals?Or areyouthinkingofhis Christ-givenpowerofforgivingsins?Mybestplan, Ithink, willbetogivea briefansweronbothpoints, hopingthatinoneatleastI shallbeonthetarget.

First,withregardtothe Pope'steachingauthority. Yourecall,ofcourse, Christ'scommand,preserv- edforusintheScripture,to heartheChurch,andthe doomwhichisthreatened forthosewhodonotobey thatcommand.Well,evidently,ifonerealisesthat Christdidinfactorderus tosubmittotheteaching authorityofHisChurch, andthatthatteachingauthorityhasitssupremerepresentativeinSt.Peter's successor,thatpersonwould beobligedunderpainof separatinghimselffrom Christ,tosubmittothe Popeinmattersoffaithand morals.Ifthroughnofault ofhisownamandoesnot recognisethebindingforce ofthisobligation,thenevidentlyhedoesnotcome undertheprecept.Sucha one,ifhetrulylovedGod aboveallthingsandwas preparedtocarryoutthe lawofGodasfarashe knewitandbecausehelovedGod,waspenitentfor whateverhehaddonein thepastagainsttheknown lawofGod,wouldstanda verygoodchanceofsalvation.ItisnotperhapssufficientlyrealisedbyoutsidersthatweCatholicshold firmlytotheprinciplethat theperfectloveofGodfor Hisownsakesuppliesfor everything.Naturallyifa manknowsofanobligation anddoesnotfulfilit,he doesnotloveGodperfectly.

Thesecondformofyour questionwouldbethis,ifI haveunderstoodyouaright: Isthesacramentofpenance,thatisconfessiontoa priest,andabsolutionby him,essentialforasinner?

Well,asIsaid, inthecase weareconsidering, theordinaryremedyisconfession.Buthereagainthere willbemanywhoeitherdo notknowofthisremedyor foronereasonoranother cannotapplyit.Forall ofthesetherestillremains theperfectloveofGodfor Hisownsakeasasure meansofsalvation.Of course, ifsuchamanknows oftheobligationofconfessingtoonewhohas fromChristthepowerof forgivingsin, thelove whichhehastowardsGod willnaturallyincludethe intentionofconfessinghis sinswhentheopportunity arises.Insuchacasethe sinsarewipedoutbythe presenceinhissoulofthe pureloveofGodeven thoughhestillisunderthe obligationofsubmittinghis gravetransgressionstothe tribunalsetupforthatpurposebyChrist.NowIhope wehavemadeallthatreasonablyclear.

AvoidedExtremesofRigour&Laxity

Oneofthemostremarkableandinspiringfeatures ofthehistoryoftheCatholicChurchisthemannerin whichtheguidingwisdom ofGodhaspreservedherat alltimesfromfallinginto extremes.Ineveryage, philosophersandmoralists outsidetheChurchhave swungfromoneextremeto theotherinalmostevery fieldofthought.Butthe Churchhasmaintainedher balance.Shehasnever beencarriedawaybythe popularphase, shehas neverthrownoveroldbeliefsthroughmereimpatiencewiththeirantiquity, shehasneverexpousedany schoouofthoughtsimply becauseofantipathyto someotherschool. Her thoughthasbeendistinguishedbyasteadiness,a balancewhich, continued overtwothousandyears,is anotherproof, ifonewere needed, ofherDivineguidance.

Totakeanevery-dayexample,wecanrecallthe dayswhentheChurchwas frowneduponbystrictSabbatariansofotherdenominationsbecauseshepermittedgamesonSunday.Now, thependulumhasswung theotherway,andoutside theChurch,themotoringor picnicweek-end,orthe moredemocraticSunday morning"sleep-in,"have largelyobliteratedtheSabbath.ButtheChurchtoday,asever,maintainsthe eminentlysensibleteaching thattheLord'sDaymay combinetheworshipofGod andtheharmlessrecreation ofHischildreninproper proportions.

Inthemoreseriousproblemsofmorality,the Churchpreservesthatsame balance.Threehundred yearsagothePuritansin EnglandandAmericapunishedasinningwomanby flogging,brandingwitha red-hotiron,and,forasecondoffence,bydeath.Todayinthesetwocountries easydivofceandthefoul doctrinesoffree-loveand companionatemarriageare robbingoftheirbeautyand theirdignitythosegreat titlesofwoman,wifeand mother.Butto-day,as threehundredyearsago, theChurchistheunswerveringchampionofwoman.

Ontheonehand,likeher Founder,shehasatender heartfortheerringwoman whorepents;ontheother, likeHim,shedefends,with adamantinefirmness,the sacrednessofthatwhich Godhathjoinedtogether.

Andevenwhenstrange andunprecedentedcircumstancesarise,theChurchis neverbewilderedordeceivedbythem.Acentury agotheIndustrialRevolutiongavetothesociallife ofEuropeanunexpected upheaval.Theimmense proletariatofouragecame intobeingalmostovernight,andwithitcameall theproblemsofmodernindustriallife:IntheWorkers'CharterofLeoXIII. theChurch'ssureandsober socialteachingwaspromulgated.Inourowndaythe pendulumhasswungtothe oppositeside,andwehave seenthatstrange,new madnesscalledCommunism spreadinghavocoverthe faceoftheearth.Unbridledcapitalism,onthe onehand,andCommunism , ontheother,standcondemnedbythewiseand salutarysocialdoctrnesof theCatholicChurch.

Twomainargumentsseeminevitably toemergeinoppositiontothefoundationof denominationaluniversitiesinAustralia.It iscontended,first,thatdenominationaluniversitiesarenotrealuniversitiesatall,and willlowerstandardsandpractice;and,second,thattheycreateorincreasedivisions andsegregationinthecommunityanddestroytheexchangeofphilosophyandideas atthepublicuniversity.

AsisthecasewithStatethisaspectonthepartof universitiesalloverthe world, thequalityofdenominational universities varies;buthewouldbea verydaringorill-informed manwhowoulddenythat, generallyspeaking, denominationaluniversitiesabroad haveprovedthemselves; andthattheydofunction asuniversitiesintheacceptedsenseoftheterm.

Acontroversyonthis questionhasbeeninexistenceinSydneyformany months.Yet,sofar,no specificexampleshavebeen offeredbythosewhoallege thatlowerstandards, incompetence, propaganda, bias, indoctrinationorsimilarunworthyfeaturesare thedenominationaluniversitiesabroad.

LookingattheCatholic university, forexample,in bothEuropeandtheNew World,tolerantandwell-informedoverseasobservers wouldbeshockedattheinjusticeofthesuggestion thattheyareanythingbut properlyconducteduniversities.

Theviewthattheyareinstitutionsofsectarianism, intolerance,escapismor proselytismhasbeenacceptedfartooreadilyand uncriticallybysomeAustralianswhosimplyhave noknowledgeofthefacts.

Catholicuniversitieshave existedsincethe12th.century;theCatholicChurch foundedcivilisation'sfirst modernuniversity;forcenturiestheChurchsustained theuniversitytraditionalone;manymodernpublic universitiesowetheirorigin totheChurch;800yearsof theuniversitytraditionisa longapprenticeship.

ContemporaryCatholic universitiesinEuropeand elsewheremaintaintheestablishedtradition,which themodernStateinherited fromtheChurch.Suchuniversitiesoperateonthe basisoffreeinquiry,objectivity,integrityandindependence,thatmustbeexperiencedtobeknownand understood.Doubtsabout

non-Catholicsareunderstandable,buttheyare wrong. Catholic universities abroadareattendedbystudentsofallreligionsorno religionatall;professors andlecturersareappointed ontheirmerit;theyinclude Catholicsandnon-Catholics;theyoperatecordially andhealthilywithother universities;theirstudents andgraduatesmeetand minglewiththosefrom otheruniversities-onthe sportsarena,intheacademyorinstitute,inpublic andsociallife,oronthe publicforum;theyarepart ofthegeneralschemeof universityeducation,and theirexistence,farfromoccasioningsurpriseorresentment,issimplytakenfor granted.

Theviewthatdenominationaluniversitieswillcreateorwidendivisionsinthe communityisasunrealat theuniversitylevelasitis ofprimaryorsecondary education.Suchdivisions existonlywhenandwhere therearepeoplewhowant themtoexist;andsuchpeopleshouldnotbefound amongstuniversitypersonnelorChristianchurchmen. Certainlydenominational universitieswillnotbreed suchunworthyindividuals.

ACatholicuniversity,for example,inacapitalcityof Australia,wouldpotprovokeamassevacuation ofCatholicundergraduates fromtheStateuniversity, eitherintheshortorthe longterm.TheCatholic universitywouldnotconductallfaculties,andbesides,evenwherethefacultiesdidover-lap,manyCatholicstudentsforvarious reasonswouldgotothe Stateuniversity.Thisis theexperienceeverywhere thatthetwotypesofuniversitiesexist,evenalongsideofoneanother.
