Followingtheriverdownstreampastthe presentsiteofForbes,hefoundthatitflowed intomarshlandand,unabletoproceedfurther, decidedtostrikeoutfortheSouthAustralian coast.
Shortageofwaterforcedhisreturntothe Lachlan,whichherejoinedbelowthemarshes previouslyencountered,butonlytomeetmore marshlandfurtheron.Oxleydecidedtoturn hackand,leavingtheLachlan,crossedtheBogan Riverandfollowedtheupperwatersofthe MacquariebacktoBathurst.
In1818,Oxleyledanexpeditionto investigatetheMacquarieRiver,butagain marshlandimpededtheprogressofhisparty. Consideringthistobetheterminationofthe river,hemarchedeastwardandreachedPort Macquarie,havingdiscoveredtheCastlereagh andPeelriversandtherichandfertileLiverpool Plains.

No,that'snotamisprint ThereisaFathers' clubatSt.FrancisdeSales parishinWashington,D.C., andthemotherswereguests atthefinalmonthlymeetingoftheschoolyear;welcomeandhonouredguests, butdefinitelyguests,not members.
Naturally,themothers came,theircuriosityabout theclubaroused.Justwhat, theywondered,hadthe boysbeenupto?They knew,ofcourse,howithad started:
Whentheschoolwasestablished,inlate1947,a P.T.A.wasconsidered.
"P.T.A.salwaysstartout with100percentmembership,"oneofthemothers complained,"butalmostimmediatelythefathersdrop outanditbecomesjusta mothers'club."
"Well,how'saboutstartingwiththemissingelement?"oneofthefathers suggested."We'llforma Fathers'club,andwhenwe haveitgoingwe'llmakeit co-ed."
Fine,themothersagreed. Afterall,theywhisperedto oneanother,itwasabout timefathersrealisedthat mothersaren'ttheonlyones concernedinparent-school relationships.
Andsothefatherstook over.Now,atthecloseof itsfirstyear,morethanhalf ofthefathersofSt.Francisaremembers-active,interestedmembersofavigorousorganisation.The motherslistenedcarefully asthepresidentgavearesumeoftheyear'sactivity:

Asmentionedearlier,the setfor"Granite,"prepared byVernrsSkabe,wassup-erb-thebestseenduring theFestival.

Ineverdidthinkmuchof "TheyCametoaCity,"by J.B.Priestley;afterseeing itdonebytheSouthPerth Dramaticclub,Ithinkofit withatwingeofpain.Joe Dinmore,playedlifelessly byPeterHartland,wasa constantburbleofsophistry. Hispartner,Alice,received agoodinterpretationatthe handsofConstanceBeresford-Ord,andsomeofthe minorcharacterswerewell treated-inparticular, FriedaMurtaghdidagood showasMrs.Batley.But theplayisapooroldstage piece,carryingnoconvictionandfailingmiserablyto justifyitsexistence.Surelytherearebetterplays thanthistobringtoaFestival?
inreallifeoftragedyand comedysidebyside.But thestageisnotreallife,and aworkofartmustpossess aunityofitsown.There wasnosemblanceofunity intheUniversity'splay,and dramaticatmospherenever hadachancetobuildup. Realtalentwasfrittered awayinthemostfutile shadow-chasingIhaveyet witnessed.Whatanappallingwasteofenergy!The playershadn'taclueasto wheretheyweregoing.

Scotchcollegeprovided oneofthebrightspotsin thisyear'sFestivalwitha verywellmountedproductionofShaw's"YouNever CanTell."Theplayitself ismerefrothandbubble;it standsorfallsbythedegreeofskillwithwhich producerandcastcanvivify Shaw'spuppetsandtranslatehiswit.Thistaskwas accomplishedwithconspicuoussuccess,andallconcerned,especiallytheproducer(JoanSecombe)must comeinforaroundofapplause.Thecostumeswere indispensableandreceived carefulattention;thecurtainsetsandthelighting weregood.Theactingwas good.Femaleroleswere takenbyboys,andinthis connectionNeilReid,as Dolly,wasacomplete"takein."Severaloftheclubs couldtakealessonfromthe fineperformanceoftheboys fromScotchcollege.-DEGUSTIBUS.

Th'enewlawstrikesout manyrestraintsforcedon allnon-Lutheranchurches sincethesixteenthcentury, whentheLutherancreed becamecompulsoryforall citizens.Duringthecourse ofyearssincethenmany modificationswereintroduced.Thelatestprevious generallawonreligion datesbackto1873.
Thenewlayincludesthe followingfavourablechangesfortheChurch:
Marriagescontractedbeforetherepresentativesof anyChurchwillnowhave legalvalidity.Religious ordersofmenandwomen willbepermittedtoestablishconventsinthecountry,thuspromisinganew influxofmissionaries.
Citizenswhoaskexemptionwillnownolongerbe inscribedintheparishregistersoftheStateChurch. Theywillalsoautomatically befreedfrompayingspecialtaxescollectedforthe benefitoftheLutheran Church.

OnRosarySunday,1874, afterthecelebrationof Massin chapelthelittlecountry ofGlynnFather Cullenformedtheopinion thatwithoutFatherMatthew'sexampleofabsolute totalabstinence,bywayof exampleandsacrificefor others,thelargersuccesshe hopedforcouldnotbeattained.
hadAlthoughpreviouslyhe takenbutlittlestimulantsofanykind,heresolved,forthesakeofgood example,togiveupeven thatlittle.Fromthatmorningheneverwaveredinhis allegiancetothecause,and thoughlossofhealth,death itself,andapremature graveasaconsequenceof coldwaterdrinkingwere ominouslypredictedby crowdsoffriends,Father Cullenlivedontothegood ageofeighty.
TheresultofFatherCullen'seffortswasnotcommensuratewiththelabour expended-onthewholeit wasunsatisfactoryanddisappointing.Someother planofcampaignshouldbe tried.Thecustomofreceivingthepledgeindiscriminatelyfromgreatmasses ofpeoplewouldhavetobe discontinuedifanypermanentgoodweretobeaccomplished.
Henceforth,FatherCullenwouldadministerthe pledgeonlytothose,who, oncalmreflection,were preparedtomakethelife sacrificetototalabstinence andsubmittheirnamesand addresses.Aswastobe expected,thisviewmet withoppositiononallsides. Theprocedurewasaninnovation,thelifeengagementwastoodrastic,the trialwasdoomedtofailure, foritwasbelievedthatthe crowds,shrinkingfromthe "hardword,"would abandonfinallyandforever theTemperanceMovement.
However,FatherCullen notyield.Thewisdomofhis newpolicywasborneoutat thecloseofaMissionin St.Peter'sChurch,Belfast, whenaboutthreehundred adults,theverycreamof thecongregation,cameup tothealtarrailsandsubscribedtheirnamestothe newTemperanceventure. Thuswasstartedthe PioneerTotalAbstinence Associationasweknowit to-day.

Atthelittleroundtable conference,FatherCullen toldofhis pointmentspreviousdasapandunfolded thenewprojectandhis hopesforitssuccess.Was itonlytobeanotherdream tobefollowedbyanother disillusionment?Godalone knewthis,buttheyall hopedforthecontrary.
FormanyyearsFather Cullenhadendeavouredto begintemperanceworkat thefoot-rungoftheladder, byadministeringthepledge toallwhosoughtit,and withresultswhich,though moderatelysuccessful,were bynomeanswhathehad anticipated.Henceforth,he wouldbeginatthetoprung oftheladderbyadministeringthepledgeonlyto thoseonwhoseprobityand powersofperseverancehe couldthoroughlyrely.Only thosecouldbememberswho hadnevertakenalcoholic drinkatallorwhohad takenitinstrictmoderation, orwho,bylongprobation, hadprovedtheirstabilityin thepracticeoftotalabstinence.Thenameofthenew Associationwouldbethe "PioneerTotalAbstinence LeagueoftheSacred Heart."
Itwouldbecomposedof twogrades-Pioneersand Probationers.Bothsections shouldtakethelifepledge againstallintoxicants.All Pioneers,withoutexception, shouldhavecompletedtwo fullyearsofrigidtotalabstinence,whileprobationers werethosewhowerepassingthroughthesetwofull yearsofwaiting.Pioneers shouldbesixteenyearsof ageorover;probationers couldbeadmittedatfourteen.TheJuvenileTotal AbstinenceAssociationof theSacredHeartforchildrenunder14wasalso started.
Tocounteractthetyranny ofhumanrespect,tobring membersoutintotheopen, tomakethemknowone anotherwhenevertheymet, toinspirethecourageand thecomradeshipwhich springsfromthesympathy ofmembers,FatherCullen
determinedthatallmembersshouldwearopenlya distinctiveemblemoftheir undertaking.Itwouldasan outwardvisiblesignof membership,andasaconstantreminderforthe Pioneerthathewasasoldierpledgedtofightuntil deathforanoblecauseand underthestandardofthe SacredHeart.
Onlya gation,searchinginvestioftenantecedently,couldmembersbeadmitted asPioneersorProbationers byPioneerCouncils.Inthe year1905HisHolinessPope PiusXsenthisblessingto thePioneerenterpriseand enricheditwithcopiousindulgences.
Attheoutset,FatherCullenintendedtoadmitnone butwomentoPioneer membership.Hewasaware thatwomenhadeverbeen, bywordandexample,the world'sgreatsocialreformers.Heknewalsothatthe world,viewedfromthe moralstandpoint,isingreat part,forgoodorforevil, whatthewomenmakeofit. Thereport,writtenbyI.M.Kingsbury,whoattendedthee*humationatFatimafortheofficialorganofthePortuguese shrine,"TheVoice,ofFatima,"alsoconfirmsthatmedicalexaminersexpresseddoubtregardingtheidentityofanotherexhumedbody,hithertobelievedtobethatofFranciscoMarto,another ofthreechildren.
ThecanonicalexaminationstookplaceApril30, inthepresenceofecclesiasticalandcivilauthorities.Twowell-knowndoctors,MaximinoCorreia, pectorofCoimbraUniversity,andHermaniMonteiro,oftheOportofaculty ofmedicine,wereincharge ofthetechnicalarrangements,Mr.Kingsbury'sreportsays.Itcontinues:

"TheBishopthereforedecidedtohavethecoffinreplacedinthecemetery pendingfurtherinvestigations.
"Theconfusionisasyet unexplainedbutitmustbe inferredthatFrancisco's body,which,unlikeJacinta's,wasburiedwithoutany sperialceremonyinthe vilMgegraveyard,wasnot properlyidentifiedatthe firstreburialandthat anothercoffinwasmistaken forthetrueone.
