Theword"nature"isused inthefirstplaceinthe samesenseastheword"essence,"thatis,tosignify thatwhichmakesanything thekindofthingthatitis. Forinstance,ifwearediscussinghumannature,the natureofman,wehavein mindthesumtotalofthe elementsthatmakeaman thekindofcreatureheis, namely,areasoninganimal. Inanyparticularmanthese elementsareabodyanda soul.Thebodygiveshim animality;thesoulgives himrationality;theunion ofthetwomakeshima rationalanimal.
Ifwewerediscussingthe natureofsomeothercreature,theconstituentelementswouldbedifferent. Thenatureofahorse,for instance,wouldnotinclude arationalsoul,becausea horseisnotarationalanimal.Thenatureofanangel, ontheotherhand,would notincludeabody;becauseanangelisnotan animal.
